WAYNE LESLEY
PELZER — Harold Wayne Lesley, 68, of 9 B, Evans Street, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013 at his residence.
Born in Liberty he was a son of the late Henry Clay and Leola Patterson Lesley. He retired from General Electric and was an avid fisherman.
Surviving are his wife, Vikki Davis Lesley; four sons, Jody Lesley of Liberty, Rodney Lesley of Raleigh, N.C., Jason Lesley of Pelzer, and Brian Lesley of Greenville; a sister, Janice Stewart of Liberty; a brother, Carl Lesley of Liberty; seven grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Eloise Brown.
Memorial services were held 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25 in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. No visitation is planned.

DR. MIKE CARMICAL
LIBERTY — Dr. William Newton Carmical III (Mike), 61, of 109 Ashmore Court, husband of Deborah Piper Carmical, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013.
Born in Lumberton, N.C., he was the son of the late William Newton Carmical, Jr. and Rose Watson Carmical. Dr. Carmical earned his B.S. Degree in Textile Chemistry and Masters Degree in Textile Technology from N.C. State University. He later went on to receive his PhD. in Textiles and Polymer Science from Clemson University. Mike worked in the textile industry throughout North Carolina and Georgia, settling at EMC Industries in Easley as Quality Control Manager in 1978. Dr. Carmical entered the teaching profession as a second career, earning his teaching credentials via the Critical Needs Program for SC. He taught physics, chemistry and physical science at Easley High School for the last 17 years. Mike sang bass in the Pickens Presbyterian Church choir and the Men’s Chorus. He was a member of the Session, served on the Board of Directors for the Child Development Center, and was the President of the Pickens-Liberty Lions Club. His love of music and teaching lead him to serve on the Board of Directors for Preserving Our Southern Appalachian Music (POSAM), EHS Academic Advisor for the Environmental and Robotics Clubs and a founding member of the Every Other Wednesday (E.O.W.) Blue Grass band. Dr. Carmical will be remembered for his compassion for his students and the great sense of humor and love of life he shared with others.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Hannah Elizabeth Carmical of Greenville; two sisters, Kathy Carmical of Lumberton, N.C. and the Rev. Marion Carmical of Whispering Pines, N.C.; and a brother, The Honorable J. Stanley Carmical of Lumberton, N.C.
A service to celebrate Dr. Carmical’s life was held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. at Pickens Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

JOHN HENRY CHAPMAN
CENTRAL — John Henry Chapman, 83, of 277 W. Old Pendleton Road, husband of Thelma Smith Chapman died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013.
Born in Central, he was a son of the late Elijah and Estella Rice Chapman. Mr. Chapman was a retired employee with Central Textiles and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Central Church of Prophecy and loved his home, gardening and fishing.
Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, John Chapman (Cindy) of Central and Eddie Chapman (Judy) of Sandy Springs; his daughter, Gail Hughes (Steve) of Central; sister, Bonnie Bowen of Central; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Jolly Chapman, Eidson Chapman and Wallace Chapman; and sisters, Ellie Sheriff, Mildred Smith and Lucille Kelly.
Funeral services were 2 p.m., Sunday at Central Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Lonnie Donald officiating. Burial followed in Memory Gardens.

EASLEY — Mrs. Sara Poole Lackey, 85, wife of the late John Leslie Lackey, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Born in Arcadia, a daughter of the late Grover P. and Grace Alexander Poole, Mrs. Poole was a homemaker and a member of New Image Outreach, where she was a charter member.
Surviving are two sons, Larry G. Lackey (Betty) of Piedmont, and Dennis B. Lackey of Easley; one sister, Ruth Simmons (Richard) of Utah; and two grandsons, J.R. and Ben Lackey.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Lackey was predeceased by a brother, Paul G. Poole; and a sister, Gladys P. Carter.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

JACKIE B. MASSINGILL
EASLEY — Jackie Brown Massingill, 72, of Mary Ann Street, and husband of the late Mickie Collins Massingill, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013.
Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late Nesbitt Ray Massingill and Susie Merck Massingill. Mr. Massingill was a retired Manager from Bi-Lo and was a member of the Bates Masonic Lodge #189 A.F.M. in Easley.
Surviving is a son, Jackie Anthony Massingill (Amy) of Easley; four grandchildren, Van Anthony Massingill, Alicia Joy Massingill, Kristyn Marie Massingill and Ellie Grace Massingill; two brothers, Gerald Massingill of Columbia and Donnie Massingill of Table Rock; and six sisters, Helen Capell, Audrey Rogers, Shirley Clontz, Barbara Aiken and Judy Burdine all of Easley and Sally Swartz of Arden, N.C.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Johnson and three brothers, Ralph, Ray Lewis, and Marshall Massingill.
A service to celebrate Jackie’s life was held on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

JANIE LARK GRANT
EASLEY — Mrs. Janie McAlister Lark Grant, 85, wife of Thomas Franklin Grant and the late Jay Martin Lark, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 at her home.
Born in Anderson County, a daughter of the late J.V. and Mettie Stone McAlister, Mrs. Grant retired from Brookline Carpet Company with 30 years of service and First Union Bank with 11 years of service. She was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, where she belonged to the Disciples for Christ Sunday School Class.
Surviving, in addition to her husband of the home, are two brothers, Melvin L. McAlister (Shirley) of Travelers Rest, and James T. McAlister (Barbara) of Piedmont; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her first husband and parents, Mrs. Grant was predeceased by a daughter, Kathy Lark; two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at Rock Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. David Gallamore officiating. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery-West.

DAVID E. BURNS
LIBERTY — David Eugene Burns, 77, of 157 Burns Hill Road, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.
Born in Greenville he was a son of the late Styles and Phoebe Owens Burns. He worked for many years at Woodside Mill in Easley, and later retired from Mayfair Mills in Pickens. He was a member of Calumet Baptist Church and the Liberty Masonic Lodge #235 AFM.
Surviving are his wife, Sarah Medlin Burns of the home; two daughters and sons in law, Joyce and Kenny Cain of Liberty, and Pam and Lee Quist of Easley; two sons and daughters in law, Tony and Jane Burns, and David and Suzanne Burns all of Liberty; three sisters, three brothers, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; his beloved dog, Odis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers.
Graveside services to honor the life of Mr. Burns were 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

DOROTHY M. DILLARD
EASLEY — Dorothy Mera Dillard, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Mera Cantrell Dillard. Miss Dillard was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Easley.
Surviving is a sister, Louise Brown of Six Mile.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. in Westview Cemetery in Easley.
The family will be at their respective homes.

BUDDY NEWELL
EASLEY — Olin Dewitt “Buddy” Newell, 76, husband of Diane Black Newell, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 at Rainey Hospice House of the Upstate in Anderson.
Born in Liberty, to the late Furman and Bessie Moser Newell, Buddy was a Mason at the Bates Lodge #189. He was raised a Master Mason in Bates Lodge #189, AFM May 27, 1967, served as a Worshipful Master in 1975 and 1997, and served as Treasurer for many years. He was Exalted a Royal Arch Mason in Pickens Chapter #47, RAM Feb. 26, 1968. He served as Excellent High Priest in 1992 and as Treasurer from 2001 until 2012. Buddy was knighted a Knight of Templar in Greenville Commandery #4, KT on May 13, 1968 and was a Charter Member of Easley Commandery #21, KT where he served as Eminent Commander in 1992, and as Treasurer from 2001 until 2012. By virtue of having served as Presiding Officer of all the above bodies, he was inducted into Palmetto Priory #54, Knights of the York Cross of Honour. He was a 40 year life member of the Bates Lodge and a Perpetual Life Member of Pickens Chapter #47, RAM, Pickens Council #34, R&SM and Easley Commandery #21, KT. His support and service to the masonry will be missed. Buddy was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 39 years, are four daughters, Deena Allison (Ken), Sandra Stokes (David), Lori Brown (Shane), and Donna Anderson (Jeff); four grandchildren, Layla Allison, Tyler Brown, and Kristian and Kadence Anderson; and a sister-in-law, Marie Newell.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Furman “Curly” Newell; and a sister, Blanche N. Pilgrim.
A graveside service was 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Easley.

WAYNE BROWN
EASLEY — Wayne Perry Brown, 70, husband of Judy Sarratt Brown, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013 at his home.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend of many, Wayne was born on May 19, 1942 in Easley in his present home, the home of his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Robinson Brown, Sr. He was a 1960 graduate of Easley High School and a 1969 graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Management. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1963 in Germany during the Cold War. Wayne used his management skills to become assistant manager of the Belk Simpson stores in Easley and the McAllister Square store in Greenville. Wayne joined the United Notions of Wallas Texas sales team and became the top salesman of the Eastern division of the company. After retiring in 2004, Wayne continued his sales career in his own used car business and development and sales of his real estate properties. Wayne was a member and supporter of both the Easley Wesleyan Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church of Easley where he served in his younger years as chairman of the administration board. He loved his family and friends and was loved greatly by them.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jeffrey W. Brown (Jan), and John M. Brown, both of Easley; a granddaughter, Lauren A. Brown of Knoxville, Tenn.; a brother John R. Brown, Jr. of Fairplay; and three sisters, Geraldine Lesley (Junior) of Easley, Marcella Southerland (Lawrence) of Anderson, and Virginia Greer (Dorsey) of Easley.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Amelia B. McCall.
Funeral services were 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27 at First United Methodist Church in Easley, with the Rev. Rodney Powell officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

AVEY GILSTRAP
LIBERTY — Avey Hughes Gilstrap, 81, of Liberty, wife of the late James William Gilstrap Sr. died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 at Manna Health & Rehab of Pickens.
Born in Pickens County, Mrs. Gilstrap was a daughter of the late Lawrence Clayton and Pallie Gassaway Hughes. She was a homemaker and a member of Calumet Baptist Church since her teenage years. Mrs. Gilstrap spent her life loving and caring for others. She lived an excellent example of a Proverbs 31 woman.
Her family was always her greatest pride and joy. While the last few years had taken a toll on her body with declining health, she never lost her sense of humor or her love for the Lord. She knew where her strength and healing came from. The family wishes to thank the staff at Manna Health & Rehab for becoming family and friends and for taking care of Avey in such a loving and caring manner.
Surviving are a son, James William Gilstrap Jr. and wife Tammy of Easley; a grandson, Nathan Lee Gilstrap (Alana) of Liberty; a granddaughter, Nicole Gilstrap Davis (Adam); a great-grandson, Colt William Davis of Easley; a sister, Beulah Hughes Smith of Liberty; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by four brothers, Alfred, Johnny, JC and James (Pick) Hughes.
Funeral services were 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Entombment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
