  • • Porter’s Chapel to hold Chili Cook Off

Do you love Chili? If the answer is yes then make plans for the Porter’s Chapel Chili Cook Off on Saturday October 19 from 4 – 6 p.m.

• Juvenile arthritis fundraiser planned

Local residents will have a chance this weekend to raise a fork for a great cause.

The Hagood Community Center will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for juvenile arthritis from noon-3 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 13.

The proceeds from the dinner will go to the Arthritis Foundation, and donations will be accepted.

• PCLA to hold book sale on Oct. 25-26

Pickens Presbyterian Church will be hosting a book sale to benefit the Pickens County Literacy Association.

The sale, which will be held on Oct. 25 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Oct. 26 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., includes hardback, paperback, inpirational, cookbooks, health, craft and childrens books, CDs, DVDs, tapes and much more.

• 41st Pumpkin Fest scheduled for Oct. 12

The 41st Pumpkin Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Oolenoy Community Building in Pumpkintown. The theme of this year’s Festival is “Fall, Festivities and Fun.” Festival activities will include a parade, 152 booths of quality arts and crafts, music, clogging, activities and rides for children, barbecue chicken lunch, barbecue sandwiches and other country foods.

The festival will begin at 9 a.m. with the start of the parade. Barbecue lunch will be served around noon. Anyone who would like to help with the festival or who needs more information should call Buddy Cox at (864) 878-2045. Anyone who would like to participate in the parade is asked to contact the Pumpkintown Fire Department at (864) 878-3473. Leave a message and someone will return your call.

• Faith Lutheran to host yard sale

Faith Lutheran Church is getting ready for it 11th annual church yard sale. The huge yard sale will offer all sort of items with the proceeds going to benefit community charities around the Pickens area.

Don’t miss this two-day event that will be held on Friday and Saturday October 18 and 19. The yard sale starts each day a 7 a.m. and goes until 1 p.m.

The list of item was be massive with adult and children clothes, blankets, household items, furniture, toys, dishes and some tasty homemade baked goods. Faith Lutheran is located at 729 West Main Street in Pickens just across the street from Blue Ridge Coop. Proceeds go to the Gleaning House, Dream Center, MARYS House, the Humane Society and the Happy Gift Corp., all which are located in Pickens.

• WPO offers chance at monthly fellowship

The Widowed Persons Organization (WPO) of Pickens County, sponsored by Dillard Funeral Home, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. The organization is not a grief therapy group, but it does provide an opportunity for widowed persons to come together, make new friends and share conversation and food while finding a new beginning in life.

The group meets on the second Saturday of every month at 1 p.m. in the fellowship building of Lakeview Baptist Church on Mauldin Lake Road in Pickens.

• Book signing set for Hanover House

The historic Hanover House will host a book signing for Kate Salley Palmer’s new book, “The Lady of Cofitachequi: A South Carolina Native American Folktale,” from 2-4 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 13.

This children’s book tells the story of the Lady of Cofitachequi, a Native American chief who encountered Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto near present-day Camden more than 500 years ago.

In 1998, Palmer and her husband, Jim, a retired Clemson University professor, started Warbranch Press Inc. The Hanover House, now located in the South Carolina Botanical Garden, is one of the oldest homes in South Carolina. The event is free to the public, and Hanover House will be open for tours during the signing as well.

• Soapstone set to host fundraiser

Soapstone Church invites everyone to a special fundraiser at the church, located at 296 Liberia Road in Pickens, this Saturday, Oct. 19. The event will feature fine cooking and will be held from noon-8 p.m. It will also be the final chance to get some of Ms. Mabel’s cooking in 2019.Visitors will enjoy true Southern cooking, including a fish fry, barbecue and fried chicken with all the fixings right from Mrs. Mabel’s kitchen.
