• Pickens Lions to hold info meeting
The Pickens Lions Club will be hosting an informal information meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at Pizza Inn in Pickens. This will be a chance for fence sitters to learn about what the club does in the community and worldwide. Grab your spouse, neighbor or a friend and dare to step into the world of helping your community. No obligation to join — just come, listen and ask questions. • Walking group starting at Sarlin
With the beautiful spring weather coming up, folks at the Sarlin Library in Liberty are planning ahead for their walking group. Join those interested to walk, talk, get fit and make friends on Tuesdays in March and April. They will be walking in downtown Liberty on March 10, the Pickens section of the Doodle Trail on March 17, Freedom Park on March 24 and the Easley section of the Doodle Trail on March 31. • Library system to sponsor contest
April is national poetry month. Celebrate by entering the Pickens County Library System’s 10th annual poetry contest sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Those interested may submit an original poem between now and March 31 at any library location or electronically to maryb@pcls.fyi. Winners from each age category will receive a cash prize. Categories are as follows: Youth — up to age 11; Teen — ages 12-18; Adult — ages 19 and up. For official rules, visit pcls.fyi. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25.
• Conservatives to meet on March 12
Conservatives of the Upstate’s next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, in the large meeting room at Pizza Inn, located on Ann Street in Pickens. The meeting is open to the public. The guest speaker will be David Harrison, a candidate for Pickens County sheriff. • Local church plans ‘teach and preach’
The Church of Jesus Christ the Lamb of God is planning a teaching and preaching series featuring Apostle Glenn Petterson from Washington, running from March 5-9 at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend. • Baha’is plan book talk about Abraham
The Pickens County Baha’is and Friends plan a book talk about “Abraham and His Legacy” at the Hampton Library at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 15. Local author Frances Worthington will take attendees back to the time of Abraham when she talks about her book, “Abraham: One God, Three Wives, Five Religions.” The program will highlight a common interest in the history of the biblical patriarch, Abraham, across five monotheistic religions.
• WPO offers chance at monthly fellowship
The Widowed Persons Organization (WPO) organization is not a grief therapy group, but it does provide an opportunity for widowed persons to come together, make new friends and share conversation and food while finding a new beginning in life. The group meets on the second Saturday of every month at 1 p.m. in the fellowship building of Lakeview Baptist Church on Mauldin Lake Road in Pickens. • Volunteers needed to paint Hope Globes
The Hope Globe is an Upstate South Carolina charity that was created to provide emotional support for children at Prisma and other hospitals of the Upstate.
The charity is currently looking for volunteers to paint globes and raise awareness, and the group is also asking for donations of any kind — furniture, appliances, cars, etc. — for its online thrift store.
