RUTH MCGUIRE

EASLEY — Mrs. Ruth Adelle James McGuire, 89, loving wife of Robert “Bob” McGuire, of Easley, passed away Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, at her residence.

Mrs. McGuire was born in Liberty on May 19, 1931, to the late Raymond and Estelle Batson James. She retired from Sears Corporation as an appliance salesperson and was a very active member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church of Easley, where she taught preschool for 46 years.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. McGuire is survived by two sons, Mike McGuire (Kim) and Rev. Mark McGuire (LuAnne), both of Easley; a sister, Dorothy Berlin of Greer; three grandchildren, Hannah Burdette (Grady) of Easley, James Howard McGuire (Mary Beth) of Athens, Tenn., and Caleb McGuire (Paige) of Pelzer; and one great-grandchild, Irvin James McGuire of Athens, Tenn.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. McGuire was preceded in death by nine siblings.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Hillcrest Memorial Park. with the Rev. Keith Kelley, Rev. Rodney Graham and Rev. Whit Brezeale officiating.

CLARENCE JUNIOR OWENS

EASLEY — Clarence Junior Owens, 63, husband of Carol Gassmann Owens, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020.

Born in Easley, he was the son of the late Clarence and Betty Sue Camp Owens. Mr. Owens retired from the Greenville County school system as a plumber and enjoyed gardening and working around his home. He took great pride in building his home for his family. He was a Christian of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Owens is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carol Owens; daughter, Rikki Owens; son, Joey Owens (Sarah); sister, Myra “Sissy” Edens (Robert); Aunt Helen and Uncle Buck Duncan; brother-in-law, William Gassmann (Ann); sister-in-law, Dianna Morris (Butch). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Will, Ava and Nate, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and close friends.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Kenneth Camp, Clyde Marshall “Marty” Owens and Toby Owens.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 4 at Robinson Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Nath Briley officiating.

HASKELL TRAVIS BURNS

LIBERTY — Mr. Haskell Travis Burns, age 73, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sept. 28, 2020.

Mr. Burns was born in Anderson County and was the son of the late Frank Washington Burns and Mavis Elizabeth Roper Burns and a very special friend to the late Sara Moore.

Survivors include three nephews, Brian Holder (Courtney) of Pickens, Frank Kelly of Baltimore, Md,. and Junior Kelly of Easley; two nieces, Tanya Ramey (Jason) of Easley and Darlene Dodgins of Liberty; and his three sisters, Dorothy Whitmire of Liberty, Frances Kelly of Easley and Nellie Holder of Easley.

Mr. Burns was predeceased by a brother, Authur Burns, and sisters, Ann Williams and Margaret Culbreth.

Mr. Burns was of the Baptist faith. He was a very jolly fellow with a Santa Claus-like laugh. He loved collecting coins and stamps and was an avid fan of college football. His love was for the Carolina Gamecocks first and Clemson second. More than football was his love of professional wrestling. He was employed most of his life in construction and loved building things.

A graveside service was held at Hillcrest Memorial Parkon Sunday, Oct. 4.

SARAH M. VIRGIL

PICKENS — Sarah M. Virgil, 38, loving mother of Jackson Blythe, went home to the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020.

Sarah was the daughter of Andrew and Beth Virgil, sister to Beth Marie Sloan (Harry), and aunt to Drew and Isabel. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Sarah was of the Baptist faith and a member of Elljean Baptist Church.

Sarah was a loving person who loved and enjoyed her precious son, the beach and working in her flowers. She was very creative with her own special, unique flair that reflected her bold and vivacious personality. Sarah was a very compassionate person who loved giving her patients gifts and cards on special occasions. Sarah received her BSN in 2008 from USC Upstate and worked as a registered nurse.

Sarah was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Louis and Josephine Virgil; maternal grandparents, Ruel and Gussie McCollum; two aunts; and one uncle.

Graveside services for Sarah were held on Oct. 6 at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

JO ANN M. PHILLIPS

EASLEY — Mrs. Jo Ann Meece Phillips, 76, wife of the late Noah Talmadge Phillips, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2020.

Born in Lexington, N.C., a daughter of the late Charles Arthur Meece and the late Natha Lee Harkins Meece, Mrs. Phillips was a longtime employee with Ballentine Hardware, and was a member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church, where she belonged to the Joy Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her son, Buddy Talmadge Phillips (Debra) of Easley; two grandchildren, B.J. Phillips (Katie) and LeeAnne Phillips Moreno (Alex); and two great-grandchildren, Shelby Rose Phillips and Talmadge Kale Moreno.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Phillips was predeceased by a brother, Charles A. Meece Jr.; and a sister, Annette Nealy.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

RICKY SMITH

LIBERTY — Ricky Glynn Smith, 60, died on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, at his residence.

Born in Seneca, he was a son of the late Raburn Randolph Smith Sr.

He graduated from Liberty High School and later retired from General Electric, where he worked as a welder. He was a member of Liberty First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his mother, Jessie Smith of Liberty; his twin sister, Vicky Chappell (Barry) of Liberty; his older sister, Cindy Ballew (Tim) of Landrum; two brothers, Randy Smith (Debbie) of Easley and Lane Smith (Tracy) of Liberty; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will host a memorial service to honor Ricky’s life at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Liberty First Baptist Church, 400 Edgemont Ave., Liberty. The family will greet with visitors following the service. Facial coverings are recommended, and social distancing will be observed.

GAIL H. GETTYS

PICKENS — Gail H. Gettys passed away on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020.

Mrs. Gettys was the daughter of John Allen Hatcher and Helen Wallace Hatcher. She was born in Anderson on Oct. 9, 1942.

Mrs. Gettys was the wife of Roger M. Gettys; mother of a son, John Gettys of Pickens; and of two daughters, Kathryn St. Denis (Mark) of Easley and Lynn Hendricks (Brian) of Easley.

She was a graduate of Erskine College. She was a director of Pickens County Meals on Wheels in its formative years. She was employed by the Pickens Department of Social Services and by Markovich Homes in Seneca. She worked together with her husband, Roger, in renovating and building homes over the years.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Linda Oakes of Moonville.

Gail found joy in her family, in friends and in travel. She was an active member of Pickens Presbyterian Church. There will be a private memorial and internment at a later date.

NORMA JEAN GALLOWAY

CENTRAL — Norma Jean McAlister Galloway, 85, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2020, surrounded by her loving family in Greenville.

Born in Anderson, she was the widow of Ray Don Galloway and a daughter of the late Robert Doyle McAlister and the late Earline Landress and Johnny Durham. She was retired from J.P. Stevens in Clemson. She was the ultimate caretaker to all. She enjoyed reading, watching Clemson football and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a longtime member of Cannon Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Mark Galloway (Becky) of Taylors; a sister, Midge Revis of Central; five grandchildren, Jake Barnes (Eve), Summer Williams (Jason), Anna Catron (Brad), Amanda Galloway and Elizabeth Galloway; eight great-grandchildren, Kurstin, Cam, Maggie-Claire, Mary-Raydon, Evelyn, Max, Blakely and Ernie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Barnes and her husband Charles; a sister, Bobbie Sue Roper; and a brother, Thomas “Sonny” McAlister.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Galloway were held on Oct. 6 at Cannon Memorial Baptist Church. Burial was held at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

ANN G. SVRLINGA

PICKENS — Ann G. Svrlinga, 67, wife of Greg Svrlinga of 44 years, passed away Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020 at St. Francis Hospital downtown.

Mrs. Svrlinga was the daughter of the late Russell Daniel Gresham and Martha Ann Brinkley Gresham.

Survivors include her husband, Greg; daughters, Andria Holcombe (Don) of Spartanburg, Maria Danielle Svrlinga of Six Mile and Lilly Anne Svrlinga of the home; a son, Stanley Carl Svrlinga of Manaus, Va.; grandchildren, Cierra Holcombe, Alexandra Holcombe, Savannah Svrlinga and Katelyn Svrlinga; a brother, Russell Daniel Gresham Jr. (Margaret) of Boston; and a sister, Retta Gresham Smith (Dale) of Spartanburg.

Ann was predeceased by her parents.

Funeral services were held Oct. 2 at Porter’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mountain View Funeral Home is serving the Svrlinga family.

JACK MORGAN

CLEMSON — Maj. Jackson “Jack” Morgan, 94, of Clemson Downs, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020.

Mr. Morgan’s life began on Feb. 18, 1926, in Oconee County, Westminster, when he was born to the late Dewitt Odell and Grace Cox Morgan. He was the sixth child in a family of 12.

Mr. Morgan was in the U.S. Navy in WWII, where he served on board a LCT-1325 amphibus landing craft tank. Most of his naval career was spent in Borneo and New Guinea. He loved serving his country and telling stories of his time in the military. He remained very patriotic his entire life.

He enjoyed a long career with the U.S. government, traveling across the United States as he worked. Jack retired as an x-ray engineer supervisor at the Charleston Naval Base in Charleston. He loved the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Mr. Morgan is survived by brothers, Jesse, Leon and Lane Morgan; and one sister, Barbara Stephens DeFore.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Doris McAllister Morgan; his first wife, Mary Helen “Mellen” Morgan; brothers, Woodfin, James, Wallace and Rayford; and sisters, Margaret, Shirley and Patricia.

Mr. Morgan was a member of East Clemson Baptist Church, 130 Frontage Road, Clemson, SC, 29631, where memorials may be made if one so desires.

Graveside services were held at Oconee Memorial Park on Oct. 3, with military rites provided by the American Legion of Seneca.

WILLIAM FRANKLIN HENRY, SR.

WESTMINSTER — William Franklin Henry Sr. of Westminster passed away on Wednesday Sept. 30, 2020, after a battle with cancer.

William was born to the late Edgar Mack and Cathryn Clark Henry in Greenville. He was preceded in death by his parents.

William is survived by his wife, Mary Henry of the home, and son, William Frankin Henry Jr.

William was a well known pharmacist of the area.

There will be a private memorial service at a later date.

THOMAS KING

LIBERTY — Thomas Cleveland King, 87, of Liberty, died on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Liberty, he was the widower of Shirley Ann Welborn King and a son of the late Arthur Cleveland and Mary Entrekin King.

He was a member of East Side Baptist Church and was retired from West Point Stevens.

Surviving are a daughter, Deborah Hightower (Eric) of Macon, Ga.; a granddaughter, Caron Farris (Eric) of Warner Robins, Ga.; a great-grandson, Trenton Farris of Warner Robins, Ga.; a sister, Alma Sidell of Liberty; and two special nieces, Sherry Spence (Larry) and Jane Harrison.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Henry King.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. King were held on Oct. 2 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel, conducted by Rev. Josh Hughes.

DONALD GERRY LAWRENCE

LIBERTY — Donald Gerry Lawrence, 70, of Liberty, died Monday, Sept. 28, 2020, at Prisma Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Toccoa, he was a son of the late James Manley and Mary Ruth Miller Lawrence.

He retired from Woodside Mill and was a member of Cornerstone Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Lawrence of the home; two daughters, Lynn Porter (Mitchell) of Easley and Betty Jo Duncan of Liberty; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Bruce Lawrence of Maggie Valley, N.C.; and numerous other friends and family who affectionately call him “Pops.”

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Janet LewAllen.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Lawrence were conducted Oct. 1 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial followed at Six Mile Church of God of Prophecy cemetery.

RESSIE POSEY BLACK

SENECA — Ressie Posey Black, 91, of Seneca, went to with her Lord and Savior Friday, Oct. 3, 2020.

Ressie was born in Liberty to the late John Wesley Posey and Ethel King Posey.

Ressie was a spinner at J.P. Stevens for 35 years.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Mildred Green, Pauline Collins, Eloise Gault, Carolyn Stancil and Doris Arp; and two brothers, Clyde Posey and Charles Posey.

Survivors include a daughter, Frances Gray of Six Mile; two grandsons, Tony Gray of Six Mile and Chad Gray of Cleveland, S.C.; two great-granddaughters, Chelsea Gray of Pickens and Alyssa Gray of Six Mile; three great-great-grandsons, Raylan Belger, Caiden Gray and Hudson Goss; one great-great-granddaughter, Adaliegh Goss; and one brother, William Posey.

LARRY J. AIKEN

LIBERTY — Larry Joe Aiken, 76, of North Freeman Road, passed away on Friday, Oct. 2, 2020.

Born in Pickens County, he was a son of Edna Belle Ellenburg Aiken of Liberty and the late Leroy Aiken.

Mr. Aiken was retired from Danfoss in Easley. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed working on tractors, gardening and landscaping his yard.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Dianne McAlister Aiken; his children, Joey Aiken (Melissa) of Liberty and Kimberly Aiken Thompson of Easley; grandchildren, Tyler Thompson (Jordan), Ashley Smith (Brandon), Nic Thompson (Abby) and Malachi Aiken; great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Layla and Cara Thompson and Carter Smith; and a brother, Melvin Aiken of Easley.

In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a brother, Dale Aiken.

Graveside services were held on Oct. 4 at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

MARTHA EMOGENE HOLLEMAN

SENECA — Martha Emogene Holleman passed away peacefully at age 89 at the Foothills Presbyterian Retirement Community in Easley on Sept. 28, 2020.

She was the second daughter of Whit and Edna (Brock) Holleman. Martha was born Dec. 10, 1930, at Anderson Hospital.

After graduating from Seneca High School, she earned her B.S. degree at Queens College in Charlotte, N.C., in 1952. She began her life’s occupation of education teaching first grade at Keowee Elementary School, where she later became principal.

She earned a master’s degree from Clemson University, then called Clemson Agricultural College. She later taught first grade at Southside/J.N. Kellett Elementary School in Seneca, where she retired from teaching.

She was a lifelong member and elder of Seneca Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir and directed handbells for many years. Martha loved Clemson University, especially Clemson football, baseball and basketball. She passionately cheered for the Tigers, attending all games for as long as she was able. She was an active member of the DAR Wizard of Tamassee chapter, as well as a member of the Seneca Literary and Civic club.

She is survived by her younger sister, Hannah Bullard (Dan) in The Woodlands, Texas, and the four children of her older sister, Sarah Plyler (Dick): Carl Dixon Plyler of Cary, N.C.; Whit Holleman Plyler of Liberty; Bundy Brock Plyler of Lancaster; and Sallie Plyler Wigington (Kent) of Seneca. There are eight great nieces and nephews, and five great-great nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at Mt. View cemetery in Seneca on Oct. 1.
