  • Veterans’ Haven to hold opening event

 

The new Veterans’ Haven of Honor, a project that has been in the works for a while, will  hold an untraditional groundbreaking ceremony on May 31 at 11 a.m. at 219 N. Palmetto St. in Liberty.

An acquired building and property will be turned into an emergency shelter for homeless veterans of Pickens County.

Rather than a groundbreaking ceremony, volunteers will paint a red, white and blue stripe down the front of the building. Plans are to have South Carolina’s Veterans Affairs Secretary William F. Grimsley at the event.  Everyone is invited to attend.

 

  • Annual Nix family reunion canceled

 

The annual Nix family reunion for descendants of Ulysses and Lou Annie Monroe Nix, traditionally held the first Sunday in June at Northside Baptist Church in Pickens, has been canceled.

 

  • Market at the Mill to honor the fallen

 

The Market at the Mill in Pickens plans to honor fallen soldiers on Memorial Day weekend, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. May 29.

There will military trucks in front of the market, located at 225 Pumpkintown Highway in Pickens. Outdoor table rentals will be available, along with a petting zoo, play bounce houses, live music and a drawing all day.

Scheduled from 9:30-11:30 a.m. will be music by Mack and Friends. Beginning at noon, there will be a 45-minute military music and salute. This will be followed by the music of Darby Wilcox until 2 p.m.

A drawing for Market Bucks and five drawings for $100 each will be done following Wilcox’s performance. Whiskey Rose will end the day of festivities, playing until 4:30 p.m.
