MARGARET ANN MCCALL

PICKENS — Margaret Ann McCall Coffman of Pickens transcended this life on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021, peacefully in her sleep.

The wife of Ralph Lee Coffman, Margaret was born Jan. 7, 1940, in Cashiers, N.C., to Shearron “Fess” McCall and his wife, Monica (Rochester). The youngest of 11, she was orphaned at the tender age of two and adopted by her sister, Winnie Lee Nix, and husband, Grover Nix, living in Pickens.

After graduating Pickens High School at the top of her class, Margaret married the late F. Don Durham and raised four children in Germany, Pickens and Melbourne, Fla. (Don, Lee Anne, “Mali” Susan Amalia, and Chris). Later, to pursue her passion for learning and life, she graduated with highest honors from Clemson University with a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting. Margaret was a master of many trades beyond accounting. She taught herself general contracting and started her own construction business in Florida, and later served (and retired) as CFO for Trehel Corporation in Seneca, among other positions, much too numerous to list.

Margaret had a talent for sewing, cooking, homewares and gardening. She could make most anything from even the smallest patch of cloth (wallets, purses, dresses, quilts, etc.), and could knit hats, sweaters and even purses. In the home, she was known for making her own jellies, pickles and even catsup — and oh, those Saturday morning biscuits! She could grow anything in her garden, from squash to asparagus to muscadines to rutabagas.

Margaret married Ralph Coffman in 1996, and they spent the next 25 years living all across the USA in Pickens, Alaska and Texas. For three years, she and Ralph traveled the USA in an RV, living in various parks around the country, volunteering at state parks, enjoying the scenery and people.

Margaret was preceded in the hereafter by her sisters Gladys, Ruth, Gertrude, Doris, Louise and Winnie Lee; brothers Garcy, Hershel, Wayne and Howard; her nieces (raised as sisters) Nell and Monty, her first husband F. Don Durham, and daughter Susan Amalia. Her surviving immediate family includes husband Ralph, niece (sister) Madge, son Don (Linda) Durham, daughter Lee Anne Crafton, son Chris Durham, stepsons Phillip (Julie) Coffman and Toby (Michael) Coffman, and grandchildren Mali Durham, Ben Crafton, Ian (Caliann) Crafton, Dylan Crafton, Sh’muel Avraham, Skye-Amalia Durham, Samantha Coffman Arnold, Kayla Coffman, Nathan Harris, Alexandra Harris and Hannah Harris; and one great-granddaughter, Caiya Crafton; along with nephews and nieces too numerous to mention.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Margaret’s memory via donations to Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

RICHARD B. SMITH

EASLEY — Richard Bruce Smith, 78, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Floyd and Dalphne Hiles Smith.

Mr. Smith was retired from Southeastern Machinery and was formerly employed with several textile mills in the area. He loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, working in his yard, woodworking and playing guitar. In his younger days, he was a member of The Originals Band during the 1960s. He was an active member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities, and the Foster Hudson Sunday School Class.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Vickie Garren Smith; sons, Ricky Smith (Patsy) of Easley and Scott Smith of Evans, Ga.; grandchildren, Austin Smith (Tamara) and Aimee Winchester (Daniel); great-grandchildren, Boone and Addie Winchester; and a brother, Bob Smith of Easley.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Larry, Jim and Jackie Smith.

The family received friends on Sept. 7 at Calvary Hill Baptist Church, with the funeral service following in the church sanctuary. Burial was held at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

ZANE KEVIN MARCUS

SIX MILE — Zane Kevin Marcus, 27, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021.

A native of Pickens County, Zane was born on Jan. 11, 1994, a son of the late Scott Finley and Deborah Marcus. Zane was a motorcycle mechanic.

Survivors include his wife, Ashley; children, Cassidy Compton and Clay Marcus, both of Pickens; two brothers, Aaron King and Zachary Finley; one sister, Nichole Cox; grandmother, Ruth Marcus; aunt, Denise Marcus; a nephew, Andrew King; a niece, Emily King; and two cousins, Sonya Stegall and Sharon Pilgrim.

Mr. Marcus was predeceased by his father, Scott Finley, and uncle, Keven Marcus.

DOYLE CLARK

PICKENS — Doyle Clark, 51, husband of 27 years to his loving wife Tisha, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021, at North Greenville Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Doyle was a humble man of great character. He was intelligent, crafty, hardworking and an avid Carolina Gamecocks fan, but most of all Doyle loved his family. Doyle was loved by so many and will be dearly missed. During his time, he touched so many lives. He was Tisha’s soul-mate, “Until we meet again my Yogi Bear,” love your Monkey.

He is survived by his wife, Tisha; sons, Milton Clark and Austin Clark, both of Pickens; his mother, Earlene Clark of Pickens; brothers, Jimmy Clark and Greg Clark; a sister, Tammy Robinson; nephews, Zach Clark and Lee Clark; and all of our family and friends who supported us during this time.

Doyle was predeceased by his father, Jim Clark, and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 3 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

THOMAS MASON BAGWELL

EASLEY — Mr. Thomas Mason “Tommy” Bagwell, 78, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021, after an extended illness.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late James Bolt Bagwell and the late Bertie Christine Sloan Bagwell, Mr. Bagwell retired from Pickens County Public Works and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Annette Dickard (Scott), and Michele Lockaby (Sam), both of Easley; a special aunt, Carol Bagwell of Easley; three grandchildren, Brent Dickard (Kristen), Colby Whitworth (Gil) and Ethan Orr (Angela); two great-grandchildren, Tyler Orr and Olivia Dickard; and one great-grandchild on the way, Dax Whitworth.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bagwell was predeceased by three brothers, Walker, Lonnie and Gerald Bagwell.

FRED ROBINSON

SUNSET — Fred Gene Robinson, 89, of Sunset, widower of Betty Robinson, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, at Prisma Health-Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Chester, he was a son of the late Jones M. and Sarah Robinson.

He worked more than 40 years in law enforcement, serving as sheriff of Fairfield County and later retiring from the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office. His hobbies included woodworking and building furniture, and he was also a barber.

Out of all the things in his life, he loved his family most.

Fred loved to play the fiddle and was very active with the Old Country Church in Westminster. He was a member of Charity Baptist Church in Salem.

Surviving are a daughter, Sarah Parton (Bryan) of Sunset; a son, David Robinson of Pickens; a daughter-in-law, Karen Anthony; six grandchildren, Amber Robinson, Connor Robinson, Brittany Robinson, Morgan Parton, Lucas Parton and Faith Parton; and a great-granddaughter, Peyton.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, S.M. and Marion Robinson.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 5, 2021, in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

ANDY RIGGINS

SIX MILE — Richard Andrew “Andy” Riggins II, 57, died on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, at Prisma Health-Greenville Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with COVID-19.

Born in Pickens, he was a son of Shelba Smith Riggins and the late Richard Andrew Riggins. He graduated from D.W. Daniel High School and was a longtime employee of Clemson University, where he worked in the Facilities Department.

Andy was a devoted family man, follower of Christ and faithful member of Ridgeland Drive Baptist Church. He loved and served everyone he encountered. Andy was often found behind the scenes helping in any way he could and usually without having to be asked. Never wanting to draw attention to himself, he would simply take care of things.

Surviving, in addition to his mother of Six Mile, are his wife, Karen Riggins of the home; a son, A.J. Riggins of the home; four daughters, Marenda Riggins, Rylee Riggins, Saige Riggins and Larissa Riggins, all of the home; and four sisters, Sam Howard of Central, Renee Thrift (Bobby) of Six Mile, Connie Medlock of Liberty and Jennifer Williams of Six Mile.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Kathi Smith, and a brother-in-law, Steve Howard.

DONNIE BOWERS

SIX MILE — Donnie Bowers, 90, loving husband of 56 years to Emily Bowers, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, at his home.

A native of Franklin County, Ga., Donnie was born on May 18, 1931, a son of the late Will Bowers and Ethel Bowers Mauldin.

Survivors include his wife, Emily; one son, Joe Bowers (Amy) of Six Mile; two daughters, Jan Alexander (Dan) of Six Mile and Annette Grant of Central; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowers was predeceased by three sons, Larry Bowers, Randy Bowers and Bill Clark, as well as an infant son; one grandchild; two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be on Sept. 8, from 1-2 p.m. in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home, with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

Flowers will be accepted.

TERRY E. PERKINS

BELTON — Terry Edward Perkins, 62, formerly of Easley, passed away on Sept. 3, 2021, at his home.

Born in Easley, he was the son of Ruby Elanor Black of Easley and the late Cletis Edward Perkins.

Terry owned and operated Terry Perkins HVAC for many years. He was currently working for Hughes Investments in Greenville. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, gardening and hunting. He also attended West End Baptist Church in Easley.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his children, Matthew E. Perkins of Simpsonville, Samantha P. Mayfield (James) of Belton, Summer Perkins of Greenville and Brandy Perkins of Spartanburg; grandchildren, Katlynn, Hunter, Morgan, Zaiden, Addison, Riley, Leannah, Noah, Braylon and Peyton; a great-grandson, Maverick; a sister, Debra Whitmire of Easley; and brothers, Eric Perkins, Jack Jackson and Damon Jackson all of Easley.

The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 10, from 4-4:45 p.m., at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with a memorial service to follow at 5 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

BOBBIE COLLINS

LIBERTY — Bobbie Jo Gossett Collins, 76, of Bradley Drive, died on Friday, Sept. 3, 2021 at Prisma Health-Baptist Easley.

Born in Central, she was a daughter of the late Furman and Marie Smith Gossett. She previously worked at Central Textiles. She enjoyed bird watching, flower gardening, cheering on her Clemson Tigers and spending time with her family. She was a member of Ruhamah Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Debbie Peek (Curtis) of Central; a son, Lawrence Leisten (Toshia) of Easley; two sisters, Judy Cornelius of Liberty and Janet Washburn of Easley; 12 grandchildren, Michael Leisten, Briana Barrett, Amber Leisten, Jake Leisten, Tara Layfield, Hannah Tallman, Trista Tallman, Morgan Smith, Taylor Smith, Joshua Leisten, Tanner Leisten and Emma Leisten; and numerous great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Leisten; a son, Mike Leisten; three sisters Brenda Tant, Doris King and Marjorie Chastain; and a brother, Junior Gossett.

The family will be gathering at her home.

ARTHUR DEVOY

LIBERTY — Arthur Bernard Devoy, 86, died on Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, at Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Wyandotte, Mich., he was a son of the late Peter Bernard and Evelyn Peltier Devoy.

He retired from Wyandotte Chemical Company, where he worked as a train conductor for 30 years. He loved to rebuild bicycles and lawnmowers, and just simply tinkering with things. At one point, he tamed a wild squirrel. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Karen Farmer Devoy of the home; three sons, Paul Devoy of Dearborn, Mich., and Darvin Wilson and Thomas Wilson, both of Liberty; a daughter, Mandy Smith of Anderson; four sisters, Mary Ann, Patty, Evelyn and Thelma; two brothers, BJ and Robert; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Per Mr. Devoy’s request, he will be cremated and no services are planned.
