BETTY LEE BARRETT AUSTIN

EASLEY — Betty Lee Barrett Austin, 89, wife for 66 precious years to the late Donald G. Austin, passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, with her sons by her side.

Mrs. Austin was the daughter of the late William Chapman and Fannie Lee Adams Barrett of Heath Springs. She was a lifetime nurse, loving wife and mother and devoted Christian and adored her family. She was a member of Pickens First Baptist Church and past member of the choir. Always busy, she loved gardening and caring for the needs of others.

Surviving are her sons, Curtis L. Austin (Yolanda) and Donnie L. Austin (Rhonda); four grandchildren, Summer Austin, Jordan E. Bowles (Jacob), Shoshannah (Rusty) Ellenburg and Dillion (Anna) Hester; 12 great-grandchildren, Machen, Lyla, Ada, Avery, Talan, Ellie-Grace, Eva, Gradie-Jo, Bentley, Kameron, Brayden, Peyton (deceased) and countless children she claimed along the way.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; brothers, infant Francis Henry, James, Claude and William; and grandson, PFC Barrett Austin.

A funeral service was held at Dillard Funeral Home chapel on April 18. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

SCOTT MCFADDEN

EASLEY — John Scott McFadden, 61, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2022.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of David Larry McFadden of Easley and the late Jo Lynn Tumlin McFadden.

Scott was a 1978 graduate of Easley High School and a 1983 graduate of Wofford College. He enjoyed golfing, cheering on the Wofford Terriers and in his younger years loved snow skiing and fishing.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his daughters, Alexandra McFadden Harman and her husband, Mack, and Emily JoAnna McFadden, all of Greenville; a granddaughter, Eloise Sutherlin Harman; and a brother, David Tumlin McFadden and his wife, Nancy Griffith McFadden, of Easley.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 22, from 2:30-3:45 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with a memorial to celebrate Scott’s life at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

MARY JANE WINKLER HESTER

WEST UNION — Mary Jane (Winkler) Hester, 81, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at Prisma Health – Cottingham Hospice House.

Born on Jan. 10, 1941, in West Union, she was the daughter of the late Marshal Arthur and Ada (Waldt) Winkler.

Survivors include her two children, Teresa Leslie (Freddie) of Liberty and Lisa Hester of Easley; three brothers, Robert Winkler of West Union, William Winkler of West Union and Dennis Winkler of Seneca; one sister, Linda Freeman of West Union; and five grandchildren, David Shepard, Danielle Murphy (Justin), Destiny Masters, Cayla Griffin and Tasha Carver (Aaron); as well as 11 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Hester; her son, James Daniel Hester; a great-grandson, Tommy Griffin; and two sisters, Martha Cox and Patricia Pfister.

Flowers are accepted. The family wished to extend their gratitude to the nurses and staff of Cottingham Hospice House.

A graveside service was held on April 18 at Oconee Memorial Park, with burial following.

ELIZABETH ‘ANN’ JARRELL

EASLEY — Mrs. Elizabeth “Ann” Jarrell, 78, went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 12, 2022.

Mrs. Jarrell was born in Pickens County and was the daughter of the late Thomas Bowen Nix and Ella Mae Stewart, stepdaughter to the late James Waldrop and loving wife for 35 years to Lee Ellis Jarrell.

Mrs. Jarrell did not need much to bring her joy and happiness. She loved her family and devoted most of her time to raising her children and spoiling her grandchildren.

She was known to many to be a good cook, and her spaghetti dish will be missed. She never missed an opportunity to advise her husband, Ellis, on what to do. Mrs. Jarrell was loved by all and will be missed dearly by her family.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Hunter Jarrell of Grays; a loving daughter-in-law, Kasey Wilson of Easley; stepdaughter, Penny Bagwell (Jerry) of Pickens; and three most precious grandchildren, Cameron, Kolbi and Brady. Mrs. Jarrell has one surviving brother, Thomas Nix (Barbara) of Richmond, Va.

Mrs. Jarrell was predeceased by two children, daughter, Linda Eller, and son, Tommy Wilson.

A graveside service was held on April 15 at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The Rev. Brian Aiken officiated the service.

SUE ELLEN MADDEN

PICKENS — Sue Ellen Madden, 76, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at her home.

Mrs. Madden was the daughter of the late Alice Jones Keith and Larry Keith.

Mrs. Madden loved her children, grandchildren and her one great-granddaughter.

She never had a bad word to say about anyone and was a very positive lady. In the dictionary, if there was a picture beside the word lady, it would be her. She also loved plants and birdwatching.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Pilgrim (Robert) of Six Mile; one son, Carl Madden (Jo Cobun) of Pickens; two sisters, Virginia Durham and Doris Murphy; one brother, Edward Keith (Maxine); two grandchildren, Heather Jeter (Alonzo) of Greenville and Shana Madden of Pickens; a great-granddaughter, Mia Walker; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation was held on April 16 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home, with funeral services following in the chapel. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Madden was predeceased by her parents; one sister, Francis Kircus; and a grandson, Shane Pilgrim.

Flowers are accepted.

DIANN WINCHESTER REECE

PICKENS — Diann Reece, 66, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 10, 2022.

A native of Pickens County, Diann was born on May 13, 1955, to the late Elbert Eugene and Sara Jessie Lee Crenshaw Winchester. She was the beloved wife of Jerry Reece. They shared 41 years together. Diann retired from the School District of Pickens County after 26 years of faithful service. She served as lunchroom manager at A.R. Lewis and Six Mile elementary schools, where she fed many children that she lovingly referred to as her “babies.” She was a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church. She enjoyed taking care of her family, bird watching, cooking and fishing with her husband. She will be remembered for her humble, kind and loving spirit.

In addition to her husband, Jerry Reece of the home, Diann is survived by her cherished children, April Stewart of Pickens, Charity Griffin (Kenny) of Easley and Damein Burnett (Jessica) of Pickens; grandchildren, Brooke McCall, Liberty Burnett, Emily Stewart, Sydney Burnett and Connor Burnett; a great-grandchild, Gavin McCall; and three sisters, Helen Dodgens (Jimmy Lee) of Pickens, Ruth Ann Wilson (Jim) of Pickens and Janet Rowland of Hickory Tavern, in addition to many nieces and nephews.

Diann was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Shirley Winchester; and a brother-in-law, Tommy Rowland.

Flowers will be accepted.

Funeral services were held on April 15 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home, with Rev. Kenny Griffin officiating. Burial took place following the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

JOHN EDMOND SR.

LIBERTY — John Olin Edmond Sr., 68, died on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at Prisma Health Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Seneca, he was the husband to Belle Smith Edmond for almost 43 years and a son of the late Olin and Gracie Nicholson Edmond. Mr. Edmond was retired from Richmond Gear, where he had worked for 20 years. He loved to work, but he was an automobile and motorcycle enthusiast as well. Most of all, he loved spending time with family.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Sharel Broome of Seneca; three sons, John Edmond Jr. (Rhonda) of Liberty, Kevin Edmond of Liberty and Douglas Edmond of Seneca; two sisters, Elaine Lusk and Charline Crenshaw (Bruce) both of Liberty; two brothers, Sam Edmond (Becky) of Central and George Edmond (Donna) of Pendleton; four grandchildren, Shayla Lusk (Justin), Faith Edmond, Gracelyn Edmond and Sarah Beth Edmond; and one great-grandchild, Montana Lusk.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Edmond.

A memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Edmond will be held on Wednesday, April 20, at 3 p.m. in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the mortuary.
