KATHRYN EDDINGS JOHNSON

STATESVILLE, N.C. — Kathryn Eddings Johnson (Kathy), 94, formerly of Statesville, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2022 at Atrium Pineville Hospital in Charlotte.

Born in Pickens on Sept. 13, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Bates Eddings and Edna Gravely Eddings. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Statesville and spent much of her early career as a church secretary. She also worked at the U.S. Geological Survey in Raleigh and Hunter Realty and Boan Building in Statesville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Rev. Leath C. Johnson.

Survivors include a son, Rick Johnson and his wife, Nunthany; a daughter, Lisa J. Morgan and her husband, Donald; along with two grandchildren, Chase Morgan (Christina) and Conner Morgan. Several nieces and nephews and grand-dogs also survive.

Kathy was a devoted wife and mother. She was selfless, kind and accepting of everyone around her.

Services celebrating Kathy’s life were conducted on June 18 at Nicholson Funeral Home, with Rev. James Lewis officiating. The burial was held at Oakwood Cemetery.

SHARON ‘SHERRY’ CURTIS

PICKENS — Sharon Kay “Sherry” Curtis, 59, wife of Matthew Allan Barnes passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2022. Mrs. Curtis was the daughter of the late Janie Elizabeth Youngblood Curtis and Wallace Edward Curtis. She was very creative and very generous, also loved arts and crafts, gardening, cooking and spending time with her family. She always put others first and was a member of Glassy Mountain Church.

Survivors include her husband, Matthew Barnes; three sisters, Sandy Curtis, Khristy Curtis and Tracy James (Richard) all of Pickens; two brothers, Randy Curtis of Abbeville and Ronnie Curtis (Melissa) of Pickens; and many special nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on June 17, at Glassy Mountain Church, with funeral services following.

Mrs. Curtis was predeceased by her parents and nephew, Todd Blair.

CLAUDE ‘DICK’ BROTHERS

EASLEY — Mr. Claude “Dick” Albert Brothers, 84, formerly of Bucyrus, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2022.

Born in Marion, Ohio, a son of the late Leslie Garland Brothers and Alberta Ruth Schnable Brothers, Mr. Brothers retired from the Bucyrus Fire Department in Ohio, with more than 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy and Army National Guard veteran.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Barbara Jo Reiff Brothers, is his sister, Patricia B. James of Newnan, Ga.

Mr. Brothers was predeceased by his son, Richard Gary Brothers.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery in Bucyrus, Ohio.

CLINTIN SCOTT COYLE

LIBERTY — Clintin Scott Coyle II, 33, son of Clintin Scott Coyle Sr. and Synthia Diane Turner, passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at his residence.

Scott was born in Pickens County on Jan. 23, 1989. He was a wonderful son and father.

Survivors include his father, Scott Coyle (Edna) of Travelers Rest; his mother, Synthia Turner (Joel Bearden) of Liberty; his fiancé, Sierra Gerard of Liberty; his children, Clintin Scott Coyle III and Colton Levi Coyle; their mother, Leighanne Monterroso, Aiden Kopacz, Adalynn Coyle and Lillith Coyle; his siblings, Kayla Diane Turner (Jeremiah), D.J. Burch (Leanne), Alex Giambrone (Charlie) and Randy Bearden (Blair); his grandmas, Martha “Ma” Bearden and Brenda “GG” Darnell ; his nieces and nephews, Ivy, Malli, Jacob, Huxley, Aralyn, Ralynne, Luna, Chloe, Xander, Pheonix, Amara and Rowena; and his cousins, Paul Gibson (Crystal) and their sons, Junior and Jonathon, and Renee Gibson and her son, Bentley Mattison.

Scott was predeceased by his grandparents, Billy and Sara Turner, Robert and Betty Coyle and Randall Bearden; and his aunt, Denise Gibson.

Visitation was held on June 4 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home, with funeral services following. Burial followed the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

DOUGLAS ‘DOUG’ WINCHESTER

SUNSET — Mr. Douglas E. “Doug” Winchester, 84, passed away on June 15, 2022, at his home.

Mr. Winchester was born on March 26, 1938, to the late David Luke Winchester Sr. and Christine Evans Winchester. Doug was the proud co-owner of Boone’s Creek Lumber Company and Winchester Brothers Lumber Company. He formerly served on the board of Six Mile Water District and First National Bank. Doug was a 50-year member of the Shriners. He was a faithful member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. Doug was a hardworking man who loved to be outdoors and never met a stranger.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Donna Nelson Winchester; two daughters, Lynn LeClair of Sunset and Christle Ross (Rob) of Six Mile; five grandchildren, Audrey LeClair, J.D. LeClair (Abbey), Elizabeth Ross, Kathryn Ross and Daniel Ross; two brothers, David (Shirley) and Charles (Joan) Winchester; and three sisters, Patricia Wallace, Doris McEntire and Sharon Forrest.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Winchester was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Keith LeClair; and a sister, Sue Smith.

Funeral services were held on June 20 in the chapel at Dillard Funeral Home. Entombment occurred at Hillcrest Memorial Park following the chapel service.

TERESA ANN WHITE

CLEMSON — Teresa Ann White, 81, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2022, at Prisma Health Oconee Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 13, 1940, in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Carpenter and Elsie (Davis) Carpenter, and wife of the late Tommy White.

Mrs. White attended East Clemson Baptist Church and was employed by Kendall company for more than 50 years. She was an avid shopper and Clemson Tiger fan and enjoyed the music of Elvis Presley and traveling.

Mrs. White is survived by her son, Brad White and his fiancé, Ashley Malmgren, of Clemson; a daughter, Tracey Cannon (Vern) of Six Mile; two grandchildren, Matthew Lewin (Nichole) of Seneca and Mikhaila Lewin of Fair Play; a great-grandchild, Dansby Lewin; brothers, Roger Dyar and Gene Dyar of Seneca, Allen Carpenter of Atlanta, Ga., and James Carpenter (Jackie) of Easley; as well as three sisters, Mary Ann Carpenter of Atlanta, Ga., Susan Fowlkes of Athens, Ga., and Martha Carpenter of Greenville. Mrs. White also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews, as well as two beloved cats, Fluffy and Tykes.

In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. White was preceded in death by her stepfather, Doyle Dyar; and siblings, Linda Carpenter Rowland and Robert Carpenter.

The family received friends on June 17 at East Clemson Baptist Church, with a funeral service being held afterward. Burial followed at Corinth Baptist Church cemetery.

The family members are at their respective homes.

KERRI W. CRISP

LIBERTY — Kerri Winchester Porter Crisp, 58, wife of Steve Crisp, passed from this life on Wednesday, June 15, 2022.

Kerri was born in Pickens, a daughter of David Franklin and Eugenia Winchester Porter. For many years, she and her mother operated Porter’s Day Care in Liberty, and she was a member of Calumet Baptist Church. Kerri also bred and trained Shar Pei puppies and went on to place them in dog shows.

Survivors include her husband, Steve Crisp of the home; her son, Justin Harris (Tiffany) of Liberty; her parents, David and Eugenia Porter of Pickens; and sister-in-law, Anita Porter Pinkston (Robert) of Pickens. Also surviving is Justin’s father, Jim Harris, along with nieces and nephews, Tara McGowan (Daniel), Kelly Porter and Reeci Bryant (Josh); and great-nieces and great-nephews, Amanda Whitehead, Bailey Whitehead, Connor Porter and Asher Bryant.

Kerri was preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Porter, and her sister, Susan Pierce.

The family received friends on June 21 at Dillard Funeral home in Pickens, with services following in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Robert Dickard officiating. Entombment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Family members will be at their respective homes.

 

FREEMAN KELLEY JR.

PICKENS — Freeman Kelley Jr., 72, loving husband of 40 years to Doris Ann Sims Kelley, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2022, at his home. Mr. Kelley was a U.S. Army veteran.

A native of Pickens County, Freeman was born May 24, 1950, the son of the late Freeman Kelley Sr. and Bessie Estelle Powell Kelley.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Ann Sims Kelley of the home; his son, Steven Sanders (Addie) of Pickens; 11 grandchildren, Jasmine Farhan, Preston Gilbert, Daniel Case, Jackson Case, Sawyer Case, Lela Case, Benjamin Case, Rachael Case, Olivia Sanders, Chase Sanders and Addison Sanders; two sisters, Pat Kelly (Donnie) of Pickens and Mary Baldwin (John) of Easley; and two brothers, Tommy Kelley of Pickens and Melvin Kelley of Easley.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Kelley was predeceased by a daughter, Shawn Marie Case; a nephew, Daniel Chapman; and a granddaughter, Emmy Case.

Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, in the sanctuary of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, with funeral services to follow at 2 p.m. Burial will take place following the service in the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church cemetery.

ALLEN WHEELER

LIBERTY — Dacus Allen Wheeler, 64, of Liberty, died Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Pruitt Health & Rehab.

Born in Pickens, he was a son of the late Walter Reford and Janet Ruth Dacus Wheeler.

Allen was a certified mechanic for many years and was an avid Clemson Football fan.

Surviving are two daughters, Jennifer Lynn Roach (David) of Greenville and Kelley Ann Howard (Josh) of Greenville; a brother, Larry Wheeler (Leslee) of Greer; a sister, Judy Messer (Doug) of Liberty; and a granddaughter, Gracie Llynn Roach. Also surviving is his loving dog, Max.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Ronnie Wheeler, Steven Wheeler and Jerry Wheeler.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Wheeler will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial will be at Abbott Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10-10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.

ROBERTS LANGMADE REES

SIX MILE — Mr. Roberts Langmade Rees, 71, went to shake the Big Guy’s hand on May 23, 2022.

Mr. Rees was born in Chicago, Ill., and was the son of the late Dr. Roberts Moss Rees and the late Eugenia Adams Rees and loving husband of Laurie Ann Pike Rees.

Mr. Rees was an avid motorcycle enthusiast. Riding with friends brought him great joy. He was a proud participant in AA and touched many lives through his involvement with the group. He enjoyed being a “dad” and camping with his wife. His furry friends Lulu and Miles brought him comfort and care. Mr. Rees was a supporter of the Second Amendment, enjoying the shooting of his guns, and was a strong supporter of Gen. Robert E. Lee and the confederacy. He would always say: “I never had it so good.”

Survivors include his son, Christopher Rees of Andover, N.J.; daughter, Brigitt Belen Rees of Milford, Conn; two stepdaughters, Krista Gallardo of Easley and Bambi Messina of Piedmont; and a stepson, Alan La’clair of New Haven, Conn. Mr. Rees is also survived by a sister, Gena Rees Douglass of Connecticut.

Mr. Rees was predeceased by a stepson, Michael La’clair.

No services are planned at this time.

CRAIG REASNER

PICKENS — Craig Phillip Reasner, 59, of Sunny Lane, died on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at his residence.

Born in Chambersburg, Pa., he was a son of Freddy Ray Reasner of Dothan, Ala., and the late Marie Masse Pierce. Craig enjoyed coloring and crafts and very much loved Dolly Parton. He was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving in addition to his father are his stepmother, Sherrie L. Reasner of Dothan, Ala.; his sister, Audrey Lanier (David) of Pickens; a brother, Ben Reasner (Tammy) of Haines City, Fla.; his nephew, Clint Lanier of Pickens; and three nieces, Heather Lanier of Easley, Mikayla Reasner of Knoxville, Tenn., and Kaydence Reasner of Florida.

In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his brother, Shawn Ray Reasner.
