Cruise-ins coming to downtown Pickens during month of June
PICKENS — Again this year, the first four Saturdays in June will see Pickens’ West Main Street filled with cruise-in vehicles and great entertainment.
A number of improvements have been made to the events. New this year will be the opportunity for the public to choose the winners each evening. Ballots will be available at the event headquarters table. Also, when the new city amphitheatre on West Main is completed, cruise-in bands will perform there. Until then, music will continue to be on stage right on West Main.
Other changes include an “open” cruise-in and the addition of bluegrass music. On June 1, the event series will open with a combination of classic and custom vehicles on display. The Katlin Owen Band will provide the country music entertainment. On June 8, motorcycles will come to town and enjoy rock and roll with the Sidemen.
Totally new this year will be an “open” cruise-in on June 15. It will be a chance for entrants to showcase all kinds of vehicles — classic and custom cars, trucks, motorcycles and more. Entertainment will come from The Marvin King Band. Jeeps will be featured on the final evening, June 22, along with the sweet sounds of bluegrass from The New Dixie Storm.
Food and beverage will be available and other surprises are planned. All four Saturday evenings are free to the general public. Everyone is encouraged to bring folding chairs or blankets for amphitheatre seating. In the event of bad weather, June 29 will be a “rain date”.
The cruise-ins will be held on a closed section of Main Street between U.S. 178 and Catherine Street. Vehicles participating in a cruise-in should check-in from Garvin Street between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Public viewing of the entries will begin at 6:30 p.m. each Saturday with entertainment starting at 7 p.m.
Presented by the Pickens Revitalization Association (PRA), this year’s event sponsors include the historic city of Pickens, Gwinn’s Tire and Alignment, NAPA in Pickens, Pace & Reeves BP and the Main Street Pizzeria. Early registration forms and additional details are available online at www.historicpickens.com or by calling the PRA at 878-0105.
