WALT PAINTER

SUNSET — Walt Painter, 67, passed away after a brief illness on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023.

Mr. Painter served in the U.S. Army Special Forces Green Berets, was a sergeant in communications, a member of the Golden Knights and cross-trained. He was awarded the Iran Iranian Airborne Paratrooper Jump Wings.

Walt is survived by five children, David, Stacy, Brandon, Kim and Rhonda; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Anita Rogers (Larry); and a lifelong friend and brother, Matt Herron.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie Painter; mother, Ruby Painter; brother, John Painter; and granddaughter, Hannah Turner.

 

 

 

 

 

 

MARY SUE MCATEE

PICKENS — Mrs. Mary Sue McAtee, 89, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023, at her home surrounded by all of her children. She went to join her recently departed, her beloved Valentine.

Mary was born on Dec. 6, 1933, to the late Celia Chappell Hamilton. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed camping, gardening and fishing. Mary had a kind heart and would always help others when she could. Above all else, she loved her family and spending time with them.

Mary is survived by her nine children, Ernie Keeney (Kim), Ramona Keeney, Earlene Keeney, Denise Mickealson (Ross), Renee Oglesby (Sidney), Brian Keeney (Loretta), Barbara Bramblett (Tony), Belinda Catoe (Tim) and Scott McAtee; as you can imagine with this many children, there are numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; one sister, Brenda Burnett (Jimmy).

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Winfred E “Leggs” McAtee; and one brother, Mervin Hamilton.

A graveside service was held on Feb. 16 at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

LATRELLE CROCKER

LIBERTY — Latrelle Williams Crocker, 85, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 13, 2023, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Clarkesville, Ga., she was the widow of Robert Mace Crocker and a daughter of the late Claude and Lucy Gastley Williams.

Mrs. Crocker worked many years for First National Bank and later retired as office manager from the Craig Oil Company.

She was a faithful member of Liberty First Baptist Church, where she served as the church pianist for 42 years.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Mullis (Tim) of Easley; a son, Rev. Robert T. Crocker (Renee) of Brevard; four grandchildren, Christoper Crocker (Rebecca), Lauren Garrison (Brett), Kristen Crocker and Rev. Zachary Mullis (Emillie); a sister, Susan Hoover (Tom) of Flowery Branch, Ga.; 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Williams.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Crocker were held on Feb. 16 at Liberty First Baptist Church. The family received friends prior to the service at the church. Interment was held at Yonah Memorial Gardens in Demorest, Ga.

LAWRENCE E. MCCONNELL

EASLEY — Lawrence E. McConnell, 70, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2023, at Fleetwood Post-Acute in Easley.

Born on Nov. 7, 1952, in Brevard, N.C., Lawrence was the son of Francis Louise Wright McConnell and the late Houston Porter McConnell. Mr. McConnell was known for his knowledge of cars. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, writing, cooking and target shooting.

Survivors include his two sons, Cody McConnell (Becky) of Anderson and Tyler McConnell (Cheyenne) of Easley; three grandchildren, Addison McConnell, Hannah Burrell and Micah McConnell; one sister, Kim Stewart of North Carolina; three brothers, Roger McConnell of Greenville, Kevin McConnell (Trudy) of Franklin, N.C., and Keith McConnell of Brevard, N.C.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving family members.

Mr. McConnell was predeceased by his father, Houston Porter McConnell; and his wife, Ida Rose McConnell.

PHILIP EMRA FLAUGHER SR.

PICKENS — Philip Emra Flaugher Sr., 81, husband of 62 years to Margaret Agnes Flaugher, passed away on Friday, Feb. 15, 2023, at his home.

Born on April 8, 1941, in Akron, Ohio, Philip was the son of the late Clarence Flaugher and Margaret Dremak. Mr. Flaugher loved nature, hunting, fishing and music.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Margaret Flaugher of the home; his children, Philip Emra Flaugher Jr. (Kathy) of Pickens, Lisa Greene (Jeff) of Easley, Heidi Flaugher of Taylors, Holly Daniel (Mel) of Taylors and April McCall (Mac) of Pickens; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Michelle Mills; and a brother, Bill Dremak.

In addition to his parents, Philip was predeceased by a son, Benjamin Flaugher; and two grandsons, Alexander Flaugher and Nathan Flaugher.

Visitation was held on Feb. 17 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens. Funeral services followed, with a private burial in the Flaugher Family Cemetery.

DAVID SAMUEL HALL

CENTRAL — David Samuel Hall, 82, loving husband of 62 years to the late Pauline P. Hall, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023, at his home.

Born on March 26, 1940, in Oconee County, David was the son of the late John Frank Hall and Zessie Hughes Hall. Mr. Hall was a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church in Central. He retired from Saco-Lowell after 47 years of employment. In his spare time, David enjoyed fishing and camping, and he especially loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his children, Tim Hall (Mary-Ann) of Easley, Tony Hall of Pickens, Roger “Buck” Hall (Valerie) of Central and Johnny Leroy Hall (Lani) of Central; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Frances Powell.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Hall was predeceased by an infant son, Thomas Hall.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the sanctuary of Camp Creek Baptist Church in Central, from noon-1:30 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow the service at the Faith Baptist Church cemetery in Central.
