RUSSELL B. RIGGINS

PICKENS — Mr. Russell B. Riggins passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of March 1, 2023.

He is eternally healed and in the presence of his Savior and reunited with his daughter, Barbara Holcombe.

Russell was the last surviving child of the late John David and Viola Simmons Riggins. Affectionately known as “Hon,” “Daddy,” “Poppy” and “Uncle Russell,” he loved his family dearly and never failed to tell each of us at every opportunity. Russell had many loving nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. Every Christmas Eve for the last 40 years, he read the story of Jesus’ birth from Luke chapter 2 to his children and all his grands and instilled the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Russell was a faithful member of Midway Baptist Church for 70 years. He loved God, his church and his church family. Russell served as a deacon and as song director, in the past, for many years.

Known to many as “the Midway Piddler” for the better part of 70 years, he worked on everything from sewing machines to tractors. Russell loved to take things apart just to see how they worked. He was happiest at home working in the “Wee Fix-It Shop.” Russell was an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict and served in England for 18 months. He retired from Ryobi in Pickens after 38 years of dedicated service and made many friends while working there.

Russell is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 72 years, Sylvia Cox Riggins; his daughters, Reda Collins (Donnie) of Sunset and Jan Kueber (Travis Hayes) of Pickens; and son-in-law, David Holcombe of Sunset. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jessica Gilstrap (Jeremy) of Easley, Russ Kueber (Sarah Catherine) of Greenville, Abbie Kueber of Pickens, Shelby Kueber of Pickens and Conner Hayes of Pickens; his great-grandsons, James Gilstrap, Jonston Gilstrap, Baylor Kueber and Bennett Kueber arriving in August; and a brother-in-law, Gwinlin Cox of Pickens.

In addition to his parents and daughter, Russell was preceded in death by his brothers, Wesley Riggins (Frances), Melvin Riggins (Jeanette), Furman Riggins (Alma), Lloyd Riggins (Easter), Luther Riggins (Pearl) and Grayson Riggins; and his sisters, Jennell Hayes (CB), Elizabeth Anthony (Tom), Mae Cater (Fletcher), Irene Evette (Lloyd) and Unice Riggins.

A home-going service for Russell was conducted on March 5 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

WINT RUTLEDGE ‘RUT’ GALLOWAY

EASLEY — Wint Rutledge “Rut” Galloway, 79, loving husband of Dianne Holland Galloway, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023.

Born in Easley, he was the son of the late Winford Americus and Areta Rutledge Galloway. Rut was a 1961 graduate of Easley High School and a 1965 graduate of Presbyterian College with a Bachelor of Science in biology. After coaching and teaching for several years, and proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army Reserve, he founded Galloway-Bell Inc. He could be found outdoors in his free time, hunting, fly fishing and spending time with the many friends he made over the years.

He was very active in the community as a member of the Easley Rotary Club and was one of the founders of Peoples National Bank. Rut was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Greenville. He loved his Lord, family and friends and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his loving wife of 53 years, Wint is survived by three sons, Bret Galloway (April) of Daniel Island, Heath Galloway (Sara) of Richmond, Va., and Cally Galloway (Rhem) of Greenville; four grandchildren, Holland, Wint, Syms and Sam Galloway; and a niece, Lisa McDonald Norris of Sunset.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Myra Galloway McDonald.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, Greenville, 200 W. Washington St., Greenville, SC 29601.

ALLEN SPROUSE

EASLEY — Mr. John Allen Sprouse, 82, husband of Linda Chapman Sprouse, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Feb. 27, 2023.

Born in Greenville County, the son of the late Ewell Buster Sprouse and the late Ruth Naomi Allen Sprouse, Mr. Sprouse was a 1958 graduate of Parker High School and retired from Borden Ice Cream. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, where he belonged to the Fishers of Men Sunday School Class, and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Allen loved the outdoors and golfing, but his greatest love was for his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his Lord. He will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew him.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 50 years, are three daughters, Tina S. Summey of Liberty, Tammy S. Keeler of Pendleton and Terri S. Bruce (Greg) of Pelzer; six grandchildren, Sonya, Ashley, Derek, Brittany, Cory and Hunter; eight great-grandchildren; and his beloved cat, Zoey.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Sprouse was predeceased by three sisters, Wendell Nease, Shelby Scarborough and Jency Snead; and two sons-in-law, John Summey and Chuck Keeler.

Memorial services will be at noon Saturday, March 11, at Rock Springs Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr. David Gallamore officiating.

JAMES G. GRUNWELL

EASLEY — James Gilbert Grunwell, 91, husband of Grover Chad Dudley, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2023.

Born in Venezuela, he was a son of the late Gilbert and Beatrice Corbett Grunwell.
Jim was a simple man who enjoyed birds, plants and nature in general. He loved cars, Porsches in particular. He retired as a captain from the U.S. Navy.

In addition to his husband, he is survived by his brothers, Tommy and Alfred Grunwell; and a sister, Laura Shafer.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 14, at 3 p.m., at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Greenville, 1002 S. Main St., Greenville, SC 29601.

DARLENE FOWLER

LIBERTY — Teresa Darlene Pressley Fowler, 64, of Jackson Street, died on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at Chandler Post Acute Care in Greer.

Born in Easley, she was a daughter of the late William Curtis and Katherine Lesley Pressley. She was a lifelong resident of Liberty and loved being outdoors, going to the lake and camping. She was a loving grandmother and adored spending time with her grandchildren and teaching them to cook. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three sons, Chris Fowler (Cindy) of Greer, Lance Fowler (Nicole) of Inman and Corey Fowler (Amber Flory) of Easley; 10 grandchildren, Katlyn Fowler, Kristin Eller, Kylie Flory, Kaycen Fowler, Hayden Anderson, Whaylon Fowler, Karson Fowler, Easton Fowler, Cameron Swayngham and Kennedy Fowler; and one great-grandchild, Kyler Harbison.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, LC and Billy Pressley.

A visitation was held on March 3 at Liberty Mortuary.

The family members will be at their respective homes.

LORRAINE MARIE  (WHEATON) GARNER

PICKENS — Lorraine Marie (Wheaton) Garner, 78, passed away at Greenville Memorial Hospital at 1:56 a.m. on Feb. 24, 2023.

Lorraine was born in Coalinga, Calif., on Nov. 19, 1944. Her family move to Oregon and then Seattle, Wash., where she met her future husband, Howard, a sailor in the Navy, at a YMCA on Jan. 1, 1965. His ship was transferred to Charleston, where they were married on March 18, 1966. She followed Howard in his Navy carrier to Scotland; Bremerton, Wash.; Groton, Conn.; Virginia Beach, Va.; and three times to Charleston. In 1991, they moved to Pickens.

Lorraine worked in various restaurants as a cook. She was active with the Pickens Senior Citizen and was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Pumpkintown.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Howard Ralph Garner; her three daughters, Rachel Arnnet of Camden, Rebecca Hix of Elgin and Naomi Mei of Columbia. She was the proud grandmother of five and great-grandmother of one.

As she wished, no memorial service will be held. A celebration of her life will be held by her family at a later date.

NANCY KATRENA  ‘TENA’ DUNCAN

PICKENS — Nancy Katrena “Tena” Duncan, 65, went through the gates of heaven to be with her son and husband on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023.

Tena was a precious soul who valued her friends and family. Her love for animals, beadwork, recipes and photography was brought into every aspect of her life. Recipe books lined her bookshelf. Photos of family and friends purge the albums and containers they reside in. She wore and gifted her beadwork throughout her time here on earth, sharing the beauty of one of the many crafts she loved so much.

Tena enjoyed gardening and planting as many flowers as she could find seeds for. She was a believer in herbal medicine, taking notes and gaining knowledge on different herbs and plants for healing and sharing what she learned with anyone that she felt it would help.

She cherished her friends and soaked in every ounce of time she could get with them. Her grandkids couldn’t get enough of their fun-loving grandma Tena and the shenanigans she talked them into. She showed up to every ballgame, school event, holiday and birthday party. Tena devoted her time spending it with the ones she loved.

Tena is not a forgettable soul; her name will bring a smile to our faces when mentioned. She is one of the most loving mothers and friends anyone could be blessed with. Her infectious smile and laugh will be implanted in our minds for eternity.

Tena is survived by her granddaughter, Taylor Danielle Mancrief Young (husband and four boys); daughter, Amanda Darnell (Brad) and two girls; son, Cory Chapman (Katie) and five boys and two girls; and son, Terrylee Chapman; along with a never-ending list of cherished friends.

Tena was predeceased by her husband, Rickey Dale Duncan; and son, Rickey Shannon Duncan.

A celebration of life service was held on March 3 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens.

CAROLYN POWELL DUCKWORTH

PICKENS — Carolyn Powell Duckworth, 76, loving wife of 34 years to Billy Hansel Duckworth, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca.

A native of Pickens County, Carolyn was born on March 16, 1947. She was a graduate of Pickens High School and later studied horticulture at Tri-County Technical College. She retired from Ryobi after 31 years of employment. Mrs. Duckworth attended Maranatha Baptist Church in Pickens. Carolyn loved her family, her church and her flowers.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Duckworth of the home; her children, Eugene Powell (Tish) of Pickens, Keith Powell (Michelle) of Pickens, Kristi Riddle (Tony) of Pickens and Kevin Duckworth (Lauren) of Duncan; grandchildren, Eric Powell (Jenna), C.C. Crump (Austin), Justin Powell, Logan Riddle and Owen Duckworth; a sister, Linda Champion of Pickens; and numerous family members who she loved.

Mrs. Duckworth was predeceased by her mother, Ettie Reid; her stepfather, Claude Reid; brothers, Marion Gantt, Douglas Reid and Thomas Reid; and a sister, Louann Lay, all of Pickens.

Visitation was held on March 5 in the sanctuary of Maranatha Baptist Church, with a funeral service to follow. A private burial will take place at a later date.

GERALD RODNEY SATTERFIELD SR.

EASLEY — Gerald Rodney Satterfield Sr., 81, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Feb. 27, 2023, after a long-term illness.

Born in Central, and later moved to Easley in the early ‘70s, he was the son of the late Jeanette Satterfield and the late Hovie S. Bryant. Gerald worked at Mohawk for 39 years. After retirement, he was a delivery man at Foothills Automotive for nine years. He was a member of Cedar Rock Baptist Church, where he served on the Offerings/Tithes Committee.

In his teens, he played softball on the Central softball team and was very good at it. He loved anything to do with cars, boats and especially motorcycles. He loved clocks and could fix any clock that was broken. He enjoyed playing card games and pool with his family. Before his illness, he would love to entice anyone to games of UNO or Rummy. He was an excellent pool player and taught all his grandchildren how to play. About every holiday, he would challenge his grandchildren to a game of pool, and rarely could anyone beat him. He loved to play pranks on people, especially his children and grandchildren. He was an avid Clemson fan.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 53 years, Carol Satterfield, are his two daughters, Sherry Watson (Michael) of Liberty and Tammy Gregory (Tommy) of Easley; his son, Rodney (Jeanna) of Pelzer; seven grandchildren, Cory Gillespie (Kala) of Anderson, Falon Miller (Jim) of Liberty, Candace Strickland of Anderson, Nicole Maxwell of Texas, Chance Johnson (Mia) of Berea, Brandon Gregory of Charlotte, N.C., and Brie Dunagan (Cory) of Liberty; and seven great-grandchildren, Maddison Miller, Tyler Miller, Olivia Strickland, Laytin Maxwell, Alayna Dunagan, Annalise Gillespie and Colton Dunagan.

In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by his daughter, Deanna Warren; a special aunt, Mattie Chappell; and uncle, Dude Chappell.

A memorial will be held at a later time.

NINA LEE EVETT

PICKENS — Nina Lee Evett, 63, daughter of the late Mywlloy and Olline Jones Evett, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at St. Francis Hospital Downtown.

A native of Pickens County, Nina was born on April 3, 1959. She enjoyed playing the mandolin and she loved animals, especially her dogs, Maggie and Bo.

She is survived by her brother, Charles Evett (Amanda Kay); and a nephew, JD Evett.

In addition to her parents, Nina was predeceased by a brother, Jarrett Evett.

Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made in Nina’s honor to the Pickens County Humane Society, located at 500 5 Forks Road, Liberty, SC 29657.

A memorial service to honor Nina’s life was held on March 7 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home.

Thomas O’Farrell Cooler

PICKENS — Thomas O’Farrell Cooler, 65, loving husband of 36 years to Jewel Cooler, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at his home.

A native of Pickens County, Thomas was born on Dec. 3, 1957, the son of the late Ernest Wesley Cooler Jr. and Ann O’Farrell Cooler.

Survivors include his wife, Jewel Cooler of the home; his children, Donald Snow of Anderson, Jeremy Cooler of Inman and Maggie Mason of Simpsonville; grandchildren, Austin Snow, Madison Owens, Andrew Cooler, Elonna Mason, Lily Wynn and Alice Wynn; a brother, Wes Cooler III; a sister, Sarah Cleaver; and a special niece, Melissa Wynn.

Mr. Cooler was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 9, in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens.
