ELLA WYATT ‘NEBO’ CARTER

EASLEY — Ella Wyatt “Nebo” Carter, 94, wife of the late Fred Lee Carter, of Easley, passed away Monday, Aug. 28, 2023.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Willard and Ellie Nimmons Wyatt.

Ella was a simple country woman who loved fishing, gardening, canning and the Great Smoky Mountains. She loved country music and square dancing with her beloved husband. She was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Greenville.

Ella is survived by a brother, John Jackson Wyatt (Sue) of Dacusville; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

A private graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

LEON FREDRICK STENZEL

CLEVELAND — Leon Fredrick Stenzel, 88, of Cleveland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at his daughter’s home in Atlanta, surrounded by family and friends.

Leon was born in Milwaukee, Wis., to the late Charles Stenzel and Erna Koenig Stenzel on March 20, 1935.

Following high school, he enlisted in the Army and served in Fort Bragg, N.C. After serving his country, he worked for American Motors, during which time he met his wife, Geraldine (Geri) Stenzel. Leon’s career in sales took them many places including Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio and finally to the Upstate, where he eventually retired.

Leon was an avid outdoorsman who belonged to Trout Unlimited and was a lifelong fan, shareholder and club member of his beloved Green Bay Packers.

After retiring, Leon took up woodturning and devoted many hours making beautiful bowls, vases, ornaments and other works of art. However, the thing that made him most happy was spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Leon was predeceased by his brother, Charles Stenzel Jr. of Port Washington, Wis.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Geri, of Cleveland; daughter, Robin Stenzel of Atlanta; son, Jeff Stenzel of Mt. Pleasant; and his loyal companion, Shadow.

A celebration of life will be held at St. Matthias Lutheran Church in Easley on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m.

PICKENS — Billie Jane Pressley, 49 of Pickens passed away on Aug. 16, 2023,

Pressley was born on June 16, 1974.

TIMOTHY ALAN LOOPER

CENTRAL — Timothy Alan Looper, 60, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023, at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

A native of Pickens County, Alan was born July 18, 1963, the son of JoAnn Looper Winslett and the late Larry D. Looper.

Mr. Looper enjoyed spending time at Lake Russell.

In addition to his mother, JoAnn Looper Winslet, Alan is survived by a brother, Jeff Looper (Theresa); and his nieces and nephews, Christopher Looper, Jordan Dunkley, Kaitlyn Dunkley and Kelsey Dunkley.

Mr. Looper was predeceased by his father, Larry D. Looper, and his wife, Kim.

A visitation was held Aug. 28 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens, with a memorial service following.

FRANCES MERCK SANDERS

CENTRAL — Frances Merck Sanders, a beloved member of the Central community, peacefully passed away on Aug. 24, 2023, at the age of 86.

She was born on Nov. 8, 1936, in Norris to the late Jule F. and Retta Swords Merck.

Frances was a compassionate and dedicated individual who touched the lives of many. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and found joy in the little things. Whether it was solving intricate puzzles, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen or cherishing time spent with her beloved grandchildren, Frances embraced each moment with love and appreciation.

Professionally, Frances was an esteemed administrative assistant in the textile industry, where she dedicated her talents to Woodside Mills. Her commitment and work ethic made her an invaluable asset to the company.

Frances will be deeply missed by her surviving family members, including her loving sons, Michael Sanders (Lynn) of Central and Marty Sanders (Sheri) of Easley; her cherished daughter, Cindy Sluder (Bobby) of Liberty; her dear sister, Mildred Pelfrey of Liberty; sister-in-law, Betty Merck of Norris; her eight grandchildren, Lori Langston, Jeremy Sanders (Jenny), Matt Sanders, Melissa Pilgrim (Michael), Sheena Rampey (Jayme), Courtney Zuber (Michael), Ryan Sanders (Emily) and Chad Sluder; and eight great-grandchildren.

The legacy of her warmth and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

A visitation to celebrate Frances’ life was held on Aug. 28 at Liberty Mortuary. Following the visitation, a heartfelt funeral service was conducted at the chapel, where family, friends and community members gathered to pay their final respects and honor a life well-lived. In accordance with Frances’ wishes, she was laid to rest at Westview Cemetery in Liberty beside her husband. This serene location will serve as a final resting place, where she will find eternal peace alongside her loved ones.

JESSICA NICHOLE AMOS

GREENWOOD — Jessica Nichole Amos, 36, entered her Heavenly home on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, at her home.

Born Oct. 6, 1986, in Easley, Jessica was the daughter of Missy LaBoon.

Ms. Amos was a member of “GIRL,” a women’s group, and sang in a worship team. Her favorite Bible verses were Ephesians 2:10 NLT and II Corinthians 1:3-4 NLT. She had a heart to help people with recovery. She loved her church and her family. Her daughter Lillie “Rue” was the absolute joy of her life.

Survivors include her daughter, Lillie “Rue” Miller of Easley; her mother, Missy LaBoon of Easley; birth father, Jamie Pinyon of Easley; a sister, Tiffany Gutierrez of Easley; and two brothers, Benjamin LaBoon and Dylan Pinyon, both of Easley.

Ms. Amos was predeceased by two angel babies, Malachi and Isaac; her father, David LaBoon; and grandparents, Wayne and Pat Dalton and Cephus and Sarah Pinyon.

The family held a celebration of life service on Aug. 29 in the sanctuary of New Journey Church.

LIBERTY — Mary Colleen Myers, 83, wife of Robert Willis Myers, of Liberty, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023.

Born in Murphy, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Charles Willard and Bertha Arp Horton.

Colleen loved gardening and spending time outdoors, especially in the mountains. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Pickens.

In addition to her loving husband of 46 years, Colleen is survived by a brother, Edward Ray Horton (Nancy); and a sister, Viola Jean Horton.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Marie Hildebrand.

A memorial service was held Aug. 26 at Grace United Methodist Church in Pickens.

PEGGY COOPER

SIX MILE — Peggy Cooper, 80, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, at her home.

Born May 9, 1943, in Easley, Peggy was the daughter of the late Lewis T. Black and Clovie P. Lewis Black.

Mrs. Cooper enjoyed fishing in her spare time. She was a loving and giving person who loved her family dearly. She loved being a mother and grandmother.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Coker (Danny) of Six Mile; three grandchildren, Misty Jones (Tony), Shane Lance and Travis Lance (Annette); and five great-grandchildren, Mickayla Jones, Ashley Jones, Kylie Jones, Ava Lance and Brylee Lance.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cooper was predeceased by a son, Allan Cooper; a sister, Ruby Crow; and a brother, Gerald Black (Francis).

The family will hold a memorial service at 10 a.m. Sept. 2 in the sanctuary of Landmark Baptist Church.

VIRGINIA OWENS HAGOOD

EASLEY — Ms. Virginia Owens Hagood, 84, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, at Foothills Presbyterian House.

Ms. Hagood was a native of Easley and was born there on May 17, 1939, to the late Mauldin and Catherine Davis Owens.

She enjoyed hiking, being outdoors, her Lakemont community and her family.

Ms. Hagood also was an animal lover and spent much of her life taking care of animals. She can often be remembered taking her golden labrador, Oliver, in the back seat of her car everywhere she went. Ms. Hagood also loved to cook and could often be found making lasagna or any other dish at any point of the day for her family. Her family was her life, and she invested much of her time into them and their wellbeing.

She loved being “Gigi” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ms. Hagood was survived by her two sons, Hank Hagood of Englewood, Fla., and Jack Hagood of Six Mile; two grandchildren, Rev. Jake Hagood (Leah) of Greer and Hannah Hyde (Jon) of Charleston; and three great-grandchildren, Isaac, Kaleb and Melody Hagood.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 30 at Southside Baptist Church, located at 410 S. Main St., Greer, SC 29650. The Rev. Jake Hagood, her grandson, will be officiating the service, along with the Rev. Jeremiah Oliver. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church in Greer, the Greenville Humane Society or Foothills Presbyterian Home.

The family is incredibly grateful to Foothills Presbyterian Home for their care of Ms. Hagood over the last two years, Interim Hospice for their care over the last five months, and Dillard Funeral Home. Ms. Hagood’s final resting place will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens at a later date.

RONALD K. MAULDIN

DACUSVILLE — Ronald Kenneth Mauldin, 82, a kind-hearted and hardworking individual, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023, at his home.

Ronald was born on July 7, 1941, in Greenville.

Ronald dedicated himself to a career as a truck driver for Winn-Dixie for an impressive 40 years. Even after retiring from Winn-Dixie, he continued his passion for truck driving by joining B and D Logging. Ronald’s commitment and expertise in his profession were highly regarded by colleagues and industry peers alike.

Outside of his career, Ronald possessed various interests and hobbies that brought him immense joy. He found solace in spending time outdoors while hunting and fishing. Ronald also had a green thumb and took pride in gardening.

Ronald is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Doris Lyda Mauldin. Additionally, he leaves behind two children, Renee Kimberly Mauldin “Kim” Jones (Benny) of Travelers Rest and Ronald Kenneth “Kenny” Mauldin Jr. (Kim) of Berea. Also among those mourning Ronald’s passing are his grandson, Dalton Jones.

While we mourn the loss of a remarkable man like Ronald Kenneth Mauldin, we take comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his parents, Willie Benjamin Mauldin and Viola Luther Mauldin, and his brothers, James Mauldin and Harold Mauldin.

Ronald will always be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, his warm smile, and his kind heart. He touched the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire others. May he rest in peace as we hold onto the cherished memories we have of him.

DORIS PORTER HAMBY

PICKENS — Doris Porter Hamby, age 85, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023 at Regency Hospital in Greenville.

A native of Pickens County, Doris was born Jan. 19, 1938, the daughter of the late Rosco Ivy Porter and Grace Helen Breazeale Porter.

Mrs. Hamby is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Hamby of Pickens, nine nieces and nephews, as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hamby was predeceased by her husband, Paul Hamby Jr.; a sister, Linda Childress; and two brothers, Elbert Porter and Ronnie Porter.

A private service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in the mausoleum chapel of Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2410 Gentry Memorial Highway, Pickens, SC 29671.

PAUL LITTLETON

EASLEY — It is with deeply saddened hearts that we announce the passing of David Paul Littleton, a beloved brother and friend, who left this world peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 24, at the age of 68. Surrounded by his cherished memories, Paul closed his eyes and embarked on his eternal journey.

Born on Feb. 21, 1955, in Pickens, Paul was a true testament to the resilience and strength that defined his generation. He was a son of the late J.D. Sr. and Elizabeth Herd Littleton. He called Liberty his home prior to moving to Easley with his sister and touched the lives of those around him with his genuine warmth and kindness.

While circumstances limited his occupational pursuits, he did work in masonry for a number of years, and his unwavering spirit and determination allowed him to find fulfillment in the depths of his disabilities.

A man of simple pleasures, Paul found joy in the company of family and close friends. His gentle soul and compassionate nature endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Throughout his life, he treasured the love of his sister, Brenda Robinson (Jack), and his brother, J.D. Littleton (Gloria), who will continue to carry his memory in their hearts. Also left to cherish his memory are a niece, Lisa Drummond (Terry); two nephews, Jay Littleton (Amy) and Shane Lovell; and four great-nephews, Bailey, Riley, Skyler and Javen.

A visitation to honor and remember Paul was held on Aug. 28 at Liberty Mortuary, where the friends and family gathered to share their memories and offer comfort and support to one another.

Following the visitation, a funeral service was conducted at Liberty Mortuary on the same day, where they joined together and celebrated his life and bid him a heartfelt farewell. He was laid to rest at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley. This gathering served as a testament to the impact Paul had on the lives he touched and allowed us to find solace in collectively remembering his legacy.

In reflection of Paul’s serene spirit, let us come together in unity to honor his memory, cherishing the joy he brought into our lives. May we find comfort in knowing that he now rests peacefully, watching over us as a guardian angel. Though he may be physically absent, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those whose lives he enriched.

WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER NICHOLSON

EASLEY — Mr. William Christopher “Chris” Nicholson, 72, husband of the late Gail Rampey Nicholson, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023.

Born in Greenville County, a son of the late Rev. Joseph Robert Nicholson Sr. and the late Lois Ann Christopher Nicholson, Chris was retired from the United States Postal Service with 29 years of service.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran.

Chris loved the outdoors and golfing, but his greatest love was for his family. He will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew him.

Surviving are his daughter, Sara Nicholson of Rock Hill; his son, Bill Nicholson (Alicia) of McAllister, Mont.; his younger brothers, Joseph Robert “Bobby” Nicholson, Jr. (Edie) of Aiken and Daniel Warren Nicholson (Tracey) of Berea; and his three grandchildren, Isaiah Nicholson, Teresa Nicholson and Sara Nicholson.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Nicholson was predeceased by a sister, Robin Turner.

Funeral services for Mr. Nicholson were held Aug. 27 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
