Dee Blackwell

Easley — Devonne “Dee” Camp Blackwell, 49, of Vine Street, died Friday, June 28, 2013 at her home.

Born in Burlington, N.C. she was the daughter of the Rev. Denny and Maxine Hilliard Camp of Easley. Dee was retired from the Pickens County School District. She worked at the district office and then taught at Dacusville Elementary, Pickens Elementary, East End Elementary, Liberty Elementary and Chastain Road Elementary. She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Greenville and was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pickens.

Surviving in addition to her parents, are her children, Lauren Blackwell Corn (Zac) and Thomas Matthew Blackwell (Gracie); two grandchildren, Ross Corn and Ellis Corn; the father of her children and dear friend, Lem Blackwell; a brother, the Rev. Bryant Camp (the Rev. Johnna); two nephews and a niece.

A service to celebrate Dee’s life was held on Sunday, June 30 at 3:30 p.m. at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 704 Edwards Rd., Greenville, SC 29615.

Hazel Chapman

Liberty — Hazel Ozel Bolding Chapman, 82, of 811 Winding Creek Road died Friday, June 28, 2013 at her residence.

Born in Liberty, she was the wife of Oneal Chapman and a daughter of the late John and Ruby Denny Bolding. She was retired from Greenwood Mills having worked there for almost 50 years. She was a member of Winding Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Cynthia Neil Chapman of Liberty and Lynn Kelly of Central; four sons, Marty, Jerry and Perry Chapman all of Liberty and Glenn Chapman of Six Mile; a sister, Rita Bolding of Liberty; a brother, Herbert Bolding; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a son, Eddie Oneal Chapman; a sister, Dalphner Gravley; two brothers, Johnny Bolding, Jr. and James Daniel Bolding; and a granddaughter, Teshia Donald.

Graveside services to honor the life of Mrs. Chapman were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Abbott Cemetery. The Rev. Doyle Finley conducted the service.

Lucille Garvin

 Easley — Lucille Hildreth Garvin, 90, wife of the late Gerald Roscoe Garvin, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Foothills Presbyterian Community.

Born in Northfork, W. Va., Mrs. Garvin graduated from the School of Nursing at Duke University, and served in the U.S. Army. An active member at Easley Presbyterian Church since 1959, she served on the Board of the Salvation Army, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Never one to sit for too long, Mrs. Garvin traveled throughout the U.S. She enjoyed hiking and camping with her family and wildflower identification. A highlight of her active life were classes at the YMCA. Most of all she cherished time with her family.

Surviving are a son, Brent A.Garvin (Dawn) of Mooresville, N.C.; a daughter, Gail G. Hall (Larry) of New Haven, CT; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were 2 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at Foothills Presbyterian Community. The Revs. Julie Schaaf and Christie Sweeny Gravely officiated.

Alma Lois Cantrell Morgan

Pickens — Alma C. Morgan, age 89, wife of Charles E. Morgan, died Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Manna Health and Rehab, Pickens.

Mrs. Morgan was born in Oconee County a daughter of the late Mamie Rogers Cantrell and Furman Cantrell. Mrs. Morgan was a member of Oolenoy Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 71 years, one daughter; Betty M. Stephens (Tommy) of Pickens, one sister; Blanche Chastain of Pickens, son In-Law Wayne Edens, two grandchildren; Dr. Greg Edens and Bart Stephens and five great grandchildren.

Mrs. Morgan was predeceased by her parents, one daughter; Thelma Edens, two siblings Ruby Kelly and Lloyd Cantrell.

A Graveside Service was 11 a.m. Monday, July 1 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Frances W. Barker

Central — Frances Irene Wilson Barker, 85, of 510 Meredith Street and widow of Charles Edward Barker died Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Seneca Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Mattie Elrod Wilson.  Frances was a homemaker and a member of Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan Roper (Lewis) of West Union and Sandra Hayes (Joe) of Wake Forest, N.C.; son, Eddie Barker (Susan) of Westminster; brother, the Rev. Billy Ray Wilson of Liberty; sister, Genevie Fowler of Liberty; grandchildren, Brad Roper, Matt Roper and Ben Hayes; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were 12 p.m. Monday, July 1 at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Central.

Freddie Morgan

Seneca — Kenneth Fredrick “Freddie” Morgan, 54, died on Friday, June 28, 2013 at his residence.

Born in Pickens he was a son of the late Willie and Grace Stancil Morgan. He was a 1977 graduate of Pickens High School. He retired as the Director of Transportation from Tri-County Technical College and was awarded many awards during his career there. His hobbies included writing poetry, working with computers, and spending time with his cats.

Surviving are a daughter, Kenna Dillard of Pickens; two sisters, Audrey Fisher of Sunset, and Genell Mull of Easley; a grandson, Price Dillard of Pickens; three nieces, Jill Newman and Robin Floyd both of Sunset, and Charlene Lesley; two nephews, Kenny Fisher and Brian Stewart both of Sunset; three great nieces, Portia Newman and Kylee Fisher both of Sunset, and Blythe Seeton of Oklahoma; three great nephews, Brandon Newman of Liberty, Kole Fisher of Sunset, and Brett Floyd of Camp LeJuene, N.C.; his two precious cats, Rackie and Miss Kitty.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Morgan of Pelion.

Funeral services to honor Freddie’s life were 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Entombment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Liberty — Paul Lee Garren, 69, of 592 Old Norris Road, died Saturday, June 29, 2013 at his residence.

Born in Greenville he was a son of the late Paul Frank Garren and Sara Mable Norris Garren Greene.

He is survived by his sister, Linda Reeves of Liberty; a sister in law, Nancy Garren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Randall and Clyde Garren.

Carnell W. Steele

Easley — Carnell Wallace Steele, 67, of 200 Anne Drive died Monday, July 1, 2013 at The Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of Wallace C. Steele of Anderson and the late Roxie Clark Steele.

Graveside services for Mr. Steele were held at 1 p.m. Friday at Keowee Baptist Church Cemetery. Dr. Melvin Aiken conducted the service.

Bill Crowther

 Pickens — William Fred Crowther, 91, husband of Leona Winchester Crowther of Pickens died peacefully Monday, July 1, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Crowther was born on July 22, 1921 in Antreville, a son of the late Fred and Mary Anderson Crowther. He served his country during World War II in the U. S. Army Air Corps. After the war, he settled in Pickens where he taught vocational agriculture for 39 years. Bill was an active member of Pickens First Baptist Church, the Lions Club and various other civic organizations. Bill was a graduate of Erskine College and later earned his Masters at Clemson College.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, Bill is survived by his children, Bill Crowther (Laura) of Murrells Inlet, Mary O’Dell (Glenn) of Williamston, Ben Crowther (Lynne) of Pickens, and Michael Winchester (Cindy) of Resaca, Ga. Surviving also are five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Bill was also preceded in death by a sister, Sydelle C. Leonard and a grandson, Andy Young.

Funeral services were conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 3 at Pickens First Baptist Church with Dr. Fred Stone officiating. A private burial will be held.

Wayne Arthur Jones

 Pickens — Wayne Arthur Jones, 91, husband of Essie Mae Patterson Jones, died on Wednesday, July 3, 2013.

Wayne was born Nov. 15, 1921, a son of the late Joel Arthur and Nina Beatrice Hayes Jones. He was an active member of Secona Baptist Church for 51 years where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was assistant scout master of Troop 51 for 25 years and was a staunch fan of the Pickens Blue Flame football team and received the Gene Hooper Fan Appreciation Award. An avid fan of the Clemson Tigers, he and his brother Wallace, attended every football game for 20 years. Wayne was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force in the European Theater where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He retired from the Singer Company in 1984 after 40 years service.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Essie Mae Patterson Jones; one daughter, Pat Jones (John McCray) of Charlottesville, Va.; two sons, Ron Jones (Vickie) of Pickens and Henry Jones (Beth Waldrep) of Lexington, Ky.; one grandchild, Courtney Jones Willis (Stephen); and one great grandson, Berkley Stephen Willis. Also surviving are two sisters, Willie Mae Pace of Columbia and Avanell Banks of Easley, and one brother, Wallace Jones (Mary) of Anderson.

In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were 3 p.m. Saturday, July 6 at Dillard Funeral Home in the chapel. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

 Elisha “Remy” Baker, III

 Liberty — Elisha Remington “Remy” Baker, III, 88, of Flat Rock Road, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at his residence.

Born in Williamstown, N.Y., the son of the late Elisha R. Baker, II, and the late Myrtle Spielvogel Baker, Mr. Baker retired as a chief scientist with the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Carmel Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Barber Shop Quartet of Anderson, the Horseless Carriage Club, the Rolls Royce Club, the SC Antique Car Club and the Antique Car Club International. Mr. Baker was a veteran of the US Army. Remy and Betty were residence of Liberty for the past 36 years.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Higgs Baker of the home; two sons, and Elisha R. Baker, IV, and wife, Patricia, of Anchorage, Alaska; and Greg S. Baker and wife, Paula, of Liberty; a daughter, Elizabeth Alexine McGraw and husband, Dan, of Coos Bay, Ore.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at a later date at Carmel Presbyterian Church.

Lucille Kelley

Liberty — Lucille Youngblood Kelley, 76, of 207 Cone Drive, died peacefully on Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Heritage Healthcare in Six Mile.

Born in Six Mile she was the widow of Andrew D. Kelley and a daughter of the late Samuel and Lois Merck Youngblood. For many years she worked at Six Mile Retirement Center, and was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church. She loved working in her yard, doing housework, and taking care of her flowers.

Surviving are a daughter, Glenda Stewart and her husband Rev. Bobby Stewart of Six Mile; two sons, Randy Kelley of Liberty, and Phillip Kelley of Toccoa, Ga.; two sisters, Shirley Stubblefield and Susan Alexander both of Six Mile; two brothers, Ernest Youngblood of Central, and Felton “James” Youngblood of Sevierville, Tenn.; five grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Kelley were 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Carolyn C. Aurich

Clemson — Carolyn Martha Corley Aurich, 78, died at her home, in Clemson, on Wednesday, July 3, 2013.

Mrs. Aurich was born in Greenwood, a daughter of the late Charles Calhoun and Lucille Kelly Corley. She graduated from Calhoun-Clemson High School, attended Furman University for two years, graduated from Emory University with a B. S. in nursing and was a member of Clemson United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Christoph Walter Aurich; one son, Charles Christoph Aurich (Jacqui) of Hong Kong; two daughters, Cathy Aurich Fulp (Walter) of Lexington, N.C., and Renee Aurich Monaghan (Neil) of Central; one brother, William Abney (Butch) Corley of Pueblo, Colo.; one sister, Dot Skelton, of Clemson; six grandchildren, Chris Aurich, Laura and Dave Fulp, Neil, Megan, and Matthew Monaghan.

Mrs. Aurich was predeceased by a brother, Charles Calhoun Corley, Jr.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 7 at Clemson United Methodist Church.  Burial followed in Old Stone Church Cemetery.

Hazel C. Fowler

Central — Hazel Craig Fowler, 89, died on Thursday, July 4, 2013. 

She was the wife of the late George J. Fowler for 62 years, and a lifelong resident of Central. Hazel was a devoted member of Central First Baptist Church and was retired from Central Textiles.

Survivors include her loving daughter, Reba Thompson (Stanley) of Central; granddaughters Lynn Rodriguez (William) of Easley, and Beth Plumblee (Tommy) of Liberty; great grandchildren Matthew and Ryan Rodriguez and Laney and Tyler Plumblee; sisters, Betty Sanders of Central and Jo Browning (Bobee) of Barnwell; brother, Harold Craig (Edna) of Central; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents James and Nell Senn Craig; a son Donnie; sisters Margaret Kinsey and Jean Brooks; and brothers Jack and Ed Craig.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in the chapel.

Sarah Moore

Liberty — Sarah Jane Moore, 93, wife of the late T. J. Earnest Moore died Friday, July 5, 2013 at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Alta Vista, Va., a daughter of the late Flurnoy Floyd Woodall and Sallie Floyd Kerr, Mrs. Moore retired from Dunean Mill after 35 years of service and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a sons Frank L. Moore of Liberty; two sisters, Sallie F. Woodall and Katie M. Woodall, both of Alta Vista, Va.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Moore was predeceased by two sons, Jimmy D. Moore and Kenneth E. Moore, by a brother, Walter Woodall; and by six sisters, Mary E. Woodall, Ethel F. Woodall, Dorothy L. Woodall, Ruth V. Woodall, Mamie G. Woodall and Edna M. Woodall.

Graveside services were 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 8 at Graceland West Cemetery.

Doris Marie Czeizinger

Pickens — Doris Marie Bird Smith Czeizinger, 85, of Pickens, died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Westfield, N.Y., a daughter of the late Roland and Ruth Card Bird, Mrs. Czeizinger was a homemaker and a member of Fairview Independent Baptist Church.

Surviving are seven children and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Czeizinger was predeceased by her first husband, Donald E. Smith and by her second husband, Louis Czeizinger and all of her siblings.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown with the Rev. Dr. Don E. McQueen officiating.

Additional services and burial will be held in Sherman, N.Y. with Spitzer Funeral Home assisting the family there.

Visitation will be from 1 until 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Benjamin H. Gillespie, Sr.

 Liberty — Benjamin Harold Gillespie, Sr., 85, of 130 Norris Avenue, died Friday at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Liberty, he was the husband of Emily Lee Gillespie and a son of the late Jairt and Lila Dobson Gillespie. He served his country during WWII and the Korean War in the U.S. Navy and later retired in 1966. Later he worked as a supervisor with the department of SC Meat Inspection. He was an avid sports fan and loved Clemson football. He was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Beverly Gillespie of Liberty; a son, Ben Gillespie, Jr.(Jeanne) of Easley; a granddaughter, Amanda Baker of Savannah, Ga.; and three great granddaughters, Olivia, Madison and Kathryn.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a granddaughter, Keri Gillespie.

Funeral services for Mr. Gillespie were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Harold Eugene Bolding

 Easley — Harold Eugene Bolding of 203 Maple Street, Easley, died Friday, July 5, 2013.

Born in Greenville County, on Jan. 22, 1935 to the late Paul Bolding and Gladys Dalton Bolding, Harold retired from Alice Manufacturing, Alice Plant.  He served in the U.S. Army from August 1956 to July 1959.  Harold was a Godly loving husband, dad, papa, brother, and a friend to all. He was known for his beautiful smile and kind, gentle heart and loved the Apostolic Faith.

Leaving behind to cherish his loving memory are his loving wife of 53 years Lavenia Williamson Bolding, the love of his life whom he called “honey bunch” his loving daughter Genia Kay (Frank) and a son Charlie Bolding both of Easley; seven precious grandchildren Jeremy Bolding of Mauldin; Lashay Kay of Easley; special grandchildren, Alisha, Shawn, Shane, Shaw, and Seth Bolding of the home, and a daughter-in-law Lori Bolding, three step-grandchildren Greg, Justin, and Matt Mueller, two brothers Ray Bolding of Easley; and Jerry Bolding of Maine; and special cousin Frances Stansell of Pickens.

He was predeceased by his precious son, Tony Bolding, and a brother and sister, Richard Bolding and Willie Lee Bolding.

A celebration of his life was held on Monday, July 8 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

Martha H. McCarter

Pickens — Martha Howard McCarter, 93, of Fox Squirrel Ridge Circle, widow of Col. Elmer Heath McCarter, died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Barnesville, Ga., a daughter of the late John M. and Martha Leona Swann Howard, Mrs. McCarter was a homemaker and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Dr. Jackson McCarter of Travelers Rest; a daughter, Dr. Andrea McCarter of Duluth, Ga.; grandchildren, Alison McCarter of Taylors, Trevor Martin of Stanford, Calif., Tara Martin of Duluth, Ga., and Trent Martin of Duluth, Ga.; and a great-granddaughter, Molly McCarter of San Antonio, N.M.

Roger Charles Boggs

 Sunset — Roger Charles Boggs, 75, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013.

He was retired from the US Coast Guard.

He is survived by, his wife, Georgia Gene Boggs, two daughters, Rebecca Hensley and Kathleen Gibson, three grandchildren, Courtney, Ross, and Andrew, a sister, Charlotte Parker, and two brothers, Charlie and John Boggs. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dorothy Boggs, a brother, Kenny Boggs, and a sister, Susan Ritter.

A celebration of his life will be celebrated on Saturday, July 13 at 3 p.m. at his residence (707 Eastatoe Creek Road, Sunset, SC 29685).

Kenneth Leo Wallace

 Easley — Mr. Kenneth Leo Wallace, 86, husband of Debra Tolley Wallace, died Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Bloom City, Wis., a son of the late Herbert Lee and Hazel Sawyer Wallace, Mr. Wallace retired from Engineered Custom Plastics and was a WWII Army Air Corps veteran, having served in the Philippines.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of the home, are five sons, Dean Wallace (Sandy) of Liberty, Jeffrey Scott Wallace (Yolanda) of Central, Michael John Wallace (Jane) of Wadesboro, N.C., Carl L. Wallace of Whitwell, Tenn., and Andy Simpson (Amanda) of Easley; three daughters, Mary McGowan (Jerry) of Whitwell, Tenn., Shirley Swaney (Mike) of Pendleton, and Candus Simpson of Easley; four brothers, Ivan, Junior, Robert, and Victor Wallace; six sisters, Buena Schlafer, Evelyn Helgeson, Ruby Crews, Hilda Nalley, Inez Hickok, and Karen Timbush; 24 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Wallace was predeceased by a son, William L. Wallace; two brothers, Keith and Frances Wallace; and a sister, Lena Fladhammer.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 12 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, July 11 at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.
