Maurice Clarence Holliday

Easley — Maurice Clarence Holliday, age 80, husband of Lucille Collier Holliday died on Thursday March 20, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Holliday was born in Pickens County, a son of the late Madge Moneta Kennemore Holliday and J.D. Holliday.  Mr. Holliday was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church in Easley.  He also loved fixing cars and working around the house.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, three daughters; Lucretia Crowe and husband Glenn of Pickens, Matilda Holliday of Alabama, Edith McCall and husband Randy of Woodruff, one son; Randal Holliday and wife Bethany of Easley, one sister; Derolyn Crowe of Easley, three brothers; Charles Holliday and wife Estella of Easley, Kenneth Holliday and wife Fay of Pickens, Ray Holliday and wife Brenda of Easley, 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mr. Holliday was predeceased by his parents, one son Timothy Allan Holliday and granddaughter Oddyssey McCall.

Funeral Service was 3 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at Dillard Funeral Home in the Chapel.  Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Samuel “Ford” Dodgens

Easley — Mr. Samuel “Ford” Dodgens, 74, husband of Cathleen “Kay” Woody Dodgens, died Monday, March 17, 2014 at his home.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Furman Alfred Dodgens, Sr. and the late Dolly Beatrice Lesley Dodgens, Mr. Dodgens was a retired carpenter.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of the home, are a son, Carl Steven Proctor of Easley; a daughter, Lynn Harbin of Easley; two brothers, Van Dover Dodgens of Six Mile, and Wayne Bertran Dodgens of Liberty; a sister, Frances Hendricks of Six Mile; four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Dodgens was predeceased by six brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were 4 p.m. Friday, March 21 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

Mary Williams

Easley — Mary Ellen Williams, 87, died on Tuesday, March 18, 2014.

Mary was the daughter of the late Robert Bige and Pearl Cummings Williams of Easley, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.  She was a beloved and active member of St. Matthias Lutheran Church of Easley, until recently, due to declining health.

Aunt Mary or Queen as she was so very affectionately known leaves behind to cherish her memory, one sister-in-law, Peggy Williams; five nieces, Eleanor Rogers and Marianne Claire of Charleston, Sue Champion of Fla., Rebecca Smith of Simpsonville, Mary Anne Owen of Easley and Cynthia McQueen of Pickens; four nephews, Butch Williams of Anderson, Rick Williams of Easley, Robert Williams of Va. and Doyle Williams of Leesville; and a very special friend, Larry Owen of Easley, whom she referred to as “Precious” or her “Buddy”.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by five brothers, R.B. Williams, Charles F. Williams, Doyle V. Williams, George F Williams, and M. Richard Williams; and five sisters Daisy W. Gaillard, Laura Grace Williams, Alice W. Carman, Norma W. Nowell, and Bobby Jean Williams.

Graveside services were conducted 4 p.m. Thursday, March 20 at Westview Cemetery in Easley, with the Rev. Sean Miller officiating.

Winifred F. Walter

Pickens — Winifred Frances Fasig Walter, formerly of Clearwater, Fla., wife of the late William Francis Walter, died on March 17, 2014 at the age of 93.

Born in Arlington, Ohio, a life long artist, she attended the Dayton Art Institute, worked as a commercial artist, studied painting with William Pachner, and helped found Studio 1212 in Clearwater.  Later in life she became an avid traveler and a competitive swimmer on the Clearwater Masters Swim Team.

Winnie is survived by daughters Vicki Cook (Charles) of Frostproof, Fla. and Jan Sparks (John) of Pickens.  In addition, she is survived by grandchildren Jeremy Cook (Amber), Cassandra Cook, Laura Burkett (Chris), Jackson Sparks and great grandchild Maxwell Cook.

Special thanks are extended to The Commons at the Willows of Easley and to her loving, dedicated caregivers from the Sitters Registry of Easley.

Jerry Nix

Liberty — Jerry Ralph Nix, 64, of 240 Nix Road, died March 17, 2014.

Born in Pickens he was a son of Frances Watson Nix and the late Rev. Ralph Grady Nix.  He retired from Mayflower and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Liberty, are two daughters, Gena Nix (Jerry) of Easley, and Tina Nix (Ben) of the home; a son, Kirk Nix (Sarah) of Bristol, Va.; three brothers,  Glen, Dewayne and Tony Nix; three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a sister, Diane Nix Childress.

Funeral services to honor Mr. Nix’s life were 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel.  Burial was at Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cheryl Hillman

Easley — Cheryl Angela Nalley Hillman, 67, of Easley, died Thursday, March 20, 2014 at her home.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Calvin Nalley Sr. and Virginia Jones Nalley.  Cheryl retired as a Practice Administrator after 28 years with Carolina Nephrology in Greenville, and was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.

Cheryl is survived by one sister, Janet Nalley Childress (William) of Clayton, N.C.;  two brothers, Lawrence Calvin Nalley Jr. (Cherie Lark) of Easley and John David Nalley (Stacey Hill) of Liberty; two special friends, Dawn Ware and Marti Lund.

Funeral service was 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 23   in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road.  Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Greyson E. Brown

Pickens — Greyson Earle Brown, 93, died Friday, March 21, 2014 at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson.

Born in Pickens, he was the son of the late Earle and Minnie Morgan Brown.  Mr. Brown proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy in WWII.  He was a retired supervisor from Mayfair Mills in Pickens after 43 years of service.  He loved being active, particularly enjoyed gardening and woodworking.  He was known for his love of roses and at one time had 75 rose bushes which he shared with friends.  He also was a longtime and active member of East Pickens Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and Sunday school superintendent and was an Associational ASSIST team member.

Surviving is his devoted wife of 72 years, Virginia Brown of the home; a daughter, Juda Addis of Anderson; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Betty Brown of Lowell, N.C.; a granddaughter, Leslie Brown of Gastonia, N.C.; and two brothers, Lewis Brown (Sybil) and Merrell Brown (Judy) all of Pickens.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son-in-law Amos Addis; and three sisters, Inola Rogers, Bernice Reeves and Imogene Sentell.

A service to celebrate Mr. Brown’s life was held on Monday, March 24 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home.  Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Roberta K. Roberts

Newnan, GA — Roberta Ann Kitchin Roberts, age 76, died March 22, 2014 following an extended illness.
She was born on April 11, 1937 in Greenville to Dr. Jesse Walton and Marjorie Nelmes Kitchin of Liberty.
Surviving are a son, Walton (Janice) Roberts of Greenville, a daughter, Midge Roberts and granddaughter, the light of her life, Jesica Hooper of Newnan, Ga., a sister, Harriet K. Giles, a nephew, Scott Giles (Angel) and sons, all of Easley, four cousins, Rick Nelmes and family of Pickens, Mike Shoemaker, Midge Yergen, Susie Magana and families of Washington State and a Godson, Hunter Wyatt of Liberty.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Cynthia S. and Linda K. Kitchin.

Frances Parton Parker

Sunset — Frances Broom Parton Parker, 78, of 116 Daves Mountain Way, died on Monday, March 24, 2014 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Eastatoe she was the widow of Sidney Ransom Parker and a daughter of the late Kermit Henry and Eva Queen Broom.  She was currently working at Corey’s Café.  She was a member of Arial Baptist Church, and was the Grace Sunday School Class Teacher.  She loved her church, her family, and loved flowers and gardening.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Roper Myers (Timothy) of Sunset, and Sue Tunnell (Stanley) of Greenville; a son, the Rev. Dr. Danny Parton (Jean) of Sunset; a step daughter, Sonya Hester of Pickens; a step son, Scott Parker of Boca Raton, Fla.; two brothers, Clifton Broom of Pickens, and Buddy Broom of Easley; six grandchildren, Chad Roper, Bryan Parton, Corey Roper, Amy Smith, Lea Tunnell, and Justin Tunnell; 11 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dave Parton, Jr.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Parker will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Arial Baptist Church.  Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 until 11 a.m. at the church.

Alice Joan “Jo Ann” Evans

Easley — Alice Joan Sisk “Jo Ann” Evans, 81, died and joined her beloved husband, William R. “Buggy” Evans, Jr., March 23, 2014.

Born in Danville, Va., to the late Mellie Sisk, Sr. and the late Lola Clardy Sisk, Mrs. Evans retired from Gettys Middle School and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.  Blessed with a praying and caring heart for her family and friends, her gentle witness was in her smile and beautiful voice, and was shown through her work in Ladies Ministries.

Surviving are a son, Donny Evans (Nancy), of Taylors; a daughter, Wanda James (Eddie), of Easley; two brothers, Mellie Sisk, Jr. and Bill Sisk, both of Easley; a sister, Linda Welsh, of Williamston; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with the Rev. Dr. David Gallamore and the Rev. Bob McCuen officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, prior to the service.

The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Eddie and Wanda James, 15 Hartsfield Court, Easley, SC 29642.

MARGARET AZILEE NORWOOD

GREENVILLE — Margaret Azilee Norwood, 85, of Greenville, widow of Eugene Lawson Norwood, died Sunday, March 23, 2014.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late George Luther and Mary Elizabeth Chapman Tumlin.  Mrs. Norwood was a member of Brandon United Methodist Church.

She is survived by daughter, Cyndi Willis (Aaron); son, Doug E. Norwood (Andrea); grandchildren, Shannon Willis (Alicia), Mary Willis, and Nathaniel Norwood; great grandchildren, Jeffery, Keagon and Channon Willis.

In addition to her loving husband of 57 years and her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 26 from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest with a graveside service following at 3 p.m. in Graceland Cemetery West.
