BPWC athletes garner medals
GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Ten members of the Berkshire-Pickens Wrestling Club traveled south on Saturday to participate in a USAGA-sanctioned tournament held at North Hall High School.
Three wrestlers double-medaled in their respective weight and age divisions.
The only BPWC gold went to Davon Powell of Newberry, who emerged victorious in the Greco-Roman competition in the junior 106-pound division after being defeated by a two-time Tennessee state champion earlier in the day in the Freestyle finals. Powell’s record this spring stands at 16-1.
Liberty’s Matt Frey bronzed in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman at 138 pounds, while teammate Black Chandler, also of Liberty, also bronzed in both styles in the 60-pound division.
Two other BPWC wrestlers took silver in Greco-Roman — Liberty’s Cole Murphy in the 138-pound division and Easley’s Jacob Rogers at 100 pounds.
The previous weekend, Powell, Murphy and Chandler headlined a productive weekend for the club during a tournament in Inman, as each won a pair of gold medals to lead a 22-medal charge.
Other double-medal winners included Frey (silver and gold), Kaleb Murphy (silver and gold), Cameron Garrison (silver and gold), John McGaha (two bronze), Devon Johnston (two bronze), and Kris Murphy (two silver).
Other medal winners in their respective classes were Sammy Vidal and Breck Dismukes, who earned golds, and Seline Oglesby and Nikki Weidman, who each earned silver.
The club’s next competition will be May 3 in a USASC-sanctioned tournament to be held at West-Oak Middle School in Westminster.
