Nelson Cureton

Easley — Nelson Kennick Cureton, 85, wife of the late James Henry Cureton, Jr., died Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

Born in Lebanon, Ill., Mrs. Cureton was a daughter of the late Mark H. and Nelson Scott Kennick. She was a homemaker and past vice president of Jaycettes in Chester as well as a charter member of the Chester Jaycettes. She was a member of Easley First Baptist Church, where she sang alto in the choir faithfully, during her active membership.

Surviving are two sons, James Henry “Hal” Cureton III (Rose) of Anderson, Mark Scott Cureton of Greenville; two daughters, Teresa C. Lusk (Michael) and Michelle C. Mauldin (Danny) all of Easley; seven grandchildren, Eric Nelson Cureton, Jennifer Mauldin Mitchell, Stacey Mauldin Gravely, Bradley William Mauldin, Amber Lusk Bivens, Kiley Hope Lusk, and Ryan Michael Lusk; and eight great-grandchildren with one on the way.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Cureton was predeceased by two brothers and one sister. Memorial services were 3 p.m. Friday, May 2 in the sanctuary of Easley First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. John Adams officiating. Memorials may be made to Pickens County Meals on Wheels, P.O. Jimmy Day

Easley — James Bolt “JB” Day, 80, of 154 Floyd Circle, died Monday, May 5, 2014 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Oron Radford and Ella Bagwell Day, Mr. Day was owner JB Day Concrete Finishing Company of Easley and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are Willavene Wilson Day of the home; two sons, Radford Day and Rickey Day, both of Easley; three daughters, Janice Day and April Lane (Sam), all of Easley, and Cheryl Salley (Benjamin) of Irmo; nine grandchildren, Melissa Klein, Chad Crooks, Scott Crooks, Jack Day, Rachel Day, Jaclyn Lane, Bradwell Lane and Connor Salley.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Day was predeceased by five brothers, Ivey, ZY, Maurice, Calvin and Andy Day, by two sisters, Margaret Gossett and Rena Mae Smith, and by a daughter-in-law, Jackie Townsend Day.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Day Family Cemetery.

Virginia Cely

Easley — Virginia Ellison Cely, 93, of Easley, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at
Laurens County Memorial Hospital.

Born in Anderson County, Mrs. Cely was a daughter of the late Gwin Childress and Corine Cely Ellison. She was a member of Easley First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Philathea Sunday School Class, the Theresa Anderson and Pam Smith Circle of the Women’s Missionary Union. For years, she volunteered at Baptist Easley Hospital and was very active in the community.

She was an officer of three clubs and organizations, and
was a member of the Greenville Women’s Club. Mrs. Cely lived on Muirfield Dr. for many years before moving to the Willows of Easley, where she enjoyed an active life.  She recently moved to Martha Franks in Laurens, to be near her daughter.
Surviving are a daughter, Ellison Carriker Jones and her husband Edmund L. Jones, Jr. of Greenwood; a sister-in-law, Marion Tucker of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cely was predeceased by two husbands, Paul
Carriker in 1970 and Brooks C. Cely in 1996; a brother G. Brooks Ellison; and two sisters, Hazel E. McCoy and Emily Ruth E. Anderson.

Funeral services were 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10 in the Sanctuary of Easley First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. John Adams officiating. Burial followed in Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery, Powdersville. Mrs. Cely’s nephews served as active pallbearers. The Philathea is asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mrs. Cely’s honor to the Easley First Baptist Church Building Fund, 300 E. First Avenue, Easley, SC 29640, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Shaun Roper

Liberty — Shaun David Roper, 44, of 174 Sharla Court, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014.

Born in Easley he was a son of the late Hovey Leroy “Chunk” Roper. He was a 1988 graduate of Liberty High School.

Surviving are his wife, Missy Trotter Roper of the home; a son, Benjamin Lee Roper of the home; his mother, Carolyn McEntire and her husband Don of Pelzer; a sister, Shannon Kannarney (Wayne) of Liberty; a brother, Travis Roper (Deonna) of Liberty; his grandmother, Mildred Hughes Crenshaw of Liberty; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Services to honor Shaun’s life will all be private.

Lynn Bolding Riggins

Easley — Mrs. Lynn Bolding Riggins, 67, wife of Bruce Riggins, died on Monday, May 5, 2014.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Paul Leonard and Lila Stewart Bolding, Mrs. Riggins was a graduate of Anderson College where she earned an associate degree, and retired from Furman University as an administrative assistant with 30 years of service. She was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church. Lynn was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 45 years, are a son, Tim Riggins (Amanda) of Easley; a daughter, Beth Banks (Sam, III) of Easley; two sisters, Joann Grant (Bill) of Easley, and Carol Menees (Bill) of Anderson; and four grandchildren, Kaitlyn Banks, Grant Banks, David Riggins, and Joseph Riggins.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Thursday, May 8 at Cross Roads Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Henry and the Rev. Gerald Roper officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Walter Edwin Capps, Sr.

Easley — Mr. Walter Edwin Capps, Sr., 94, husband of Jacqueline Walker Capps, died Monday, May 5, 2014 at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Walter Oscar and Bessie Corbin Capps, Mr. Capps retired from Saco Lowell and was a member of Park Street Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran having proudly served during WWII in the European Theater.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 66 years, are a son, Walter Edwin Capps, Jr. (Jane) of Anderson; a daughter, Sandra Patterson (Gary) of Liberty; a sister, Virginia (Jennie) Beeks of Easley; four grandchildren, Stephanie Edwards (Keith), Michael Patterson (Sarah), Corbin Grantt (Hank), and Walker Capps; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Capps was predeceased by two brothers, Luther (Bud), and Loring Capps; and two sisters, Hazel Barr and Mary Lee Roper.
Funeral services were 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown with the Rev. Alton Nix officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Ann H. Griffin

Liberty — Martha Ann Holcombe Griffin, 60, of 427 Slab Bridge Road, died on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at her home.

Born in Easley she was a daughter of the late Charlie M. and Marie Black Holcombe.

For many years she worked in her family’s business, Holcombe Grocery, and later worked at Ball Mart. She was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Gerald Griffin of the home; a daughter, Tina Ellenburg (Chris) of Liberty; a sister, Joyce Stokes of Easley; two brothers, Sam and Joe Holcombe both of Liberty; six grandchildren, Brittany, Josh, Breanna, Kaitlyn, Ethan, and Christopher; and a great granddaughter, Lily.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Lee Griffin.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Griffin were 2 p.m. Monday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Sandra Cassell

Pickens — Sandra Jean Howard Cassell, 68, wife of Cartee Cassell, died on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at her home.

Sandra was born in Greenville County, a daughter of the late Arnold and Gladys Butler Howard. She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband Cartee, is her son, Steven Adcox (Yvonne) of Liberty, and four grandsons.

A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Monday, May 12 at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. H. C. Couch officiating.

Vivian D. Hurt

Easley — Vivian Dukes Hurt, 92, of 413 North B Street, wife of the late Alvin Judson “Jud” Hurt, died Friday, May 9, 2014 at her home.

Born on Jan. 2, 1922, in Greenwood, Mrs. Hurt was the daughter of the late Fannie Mae Timmerman and Bailey Augustus Dukes.

She was brought up in Laurens where she graduated from Laurens High School. She graduated from Presbyterian College with a B.A. in French and English and was the first female to serve as Student Body President. Mrs. Hurt taught French, English, and Latin for several years in the Pickens County School System. Mrs. Hurt was a member of Easley First Baptist Church, where she had been active for over 50 years. She served in many roles at the church including being a former Chairman of the Flower Committee and working with the needlepoint and prayer room ministry.

She was also one of the first females to serve as a deacon. Her civic activities included being a member of the Easley Garden Club, Better Homes Club, and several bridge clubs. She also worked with the Children’s Trust Fund of South Carolina, the Camp of the Blind, and she enjoyed her volunteer work at the hospital.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends.

Surviving are two sons, Alvin (Al) Judson Hurt, Jr., and his wife, Sandi, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and William Bailey Hurt and his wife, Beth Manzi, of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Lucy Hurt Beard, and her husband, Carey, of Easley; six grandchildren, Bailey Judson Beard, Carey Hall Beard and his wife, Koehler, Alvin Judson Hurt, III, Elizabeth Brooke Hurt, Ann Dukes Hurt, and Morgan Katia Hurt; and one great-granddaughter, Emily Augustus Beard.

Funeral services were 3 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Easley, with the Rev. Dr. John Adams officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Della Faye Reichert

Easley — Della Faye Summerall Reichert, 76, of Clarksville, Tenn., wife of the late Melvin Reichert, and formerly of Easley, died May 5, 2014 in Nashville, Tenn.
Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Leo and Ethel Dickard Summerall, Mrs. Reichert was a homemaker and was formerly a beautician.
She is survived by a sister, Kathleen Cater, several nieces and nephews, and by a good friend, Ralph Kent, of Clarksville, Tenn.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Reichert was predeceased by four brothers.

Bonnie Boggs

Pickens — Bonnie Stancil Boggs, 70, loving wife of Bobby Boggs died on Sunday, May 11, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Bonnie was born in Six Mile, a daughter of the late Jesse Houston and Mary Alma Rothell Stancil. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she was a faithful member of East Pickens Baptist Church where she was a member of the Welcome Sunday School Class. Bonnie had many talents which included gardening, singing, sewing and music, especially the piano.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Bobby Boggs of the home, her son, Gregg Boggs (Joni) of Liberty, and her daughter, Tammi Grothaus (Todd) of Easley and her grandchildren, Haley Boggs, Natalie Boggs, Justin Winchester, and Laney Winchester. Also surviving is a brother, Colie Stancil of Pickens, and sisters, Shirley Kelley of Norris, and Dale Martin (Dave) of Clemson.

Bonnie was preceded in death by brothers, Jake Stancil, Heyward Stancil, Melvin Stancil and a sister, Bernice Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home with Mr. Rick Grant and Dr. Boyce Whitman officiating, with words and music by her son, Gregg. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Alfred Proffitt

Pickens — Alfred Edlow Proffitt, 79, husband of the late Nancy Thomas Proffitt, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Fluvanna County, Va., to the late Alfred Conrad and Etta Shifflett Proffit, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. After being honorably discharged, Alfred worked mainly as an electrician and a plumber, but could be referred to as a “jack of all trades.”

He is survived by a son, Robert Proffitt (Juanita) of Pickens; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
