Bessie Patterson Gilstrap

Easley — Bessie Patterson Gilstrap, age 94, died Tuesday May 13, 2014.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of Rice’s Creek Baptist Church, Liberty.

Surviving include one daughter; Nancy Fant and husband Frank of Easley, one son; Kenneth Gilstrap and wife Gail of Liberty, six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by two sons; Stan and Steve Gilstrap and one daughter; Toni Evans.

A graveside service was held 2 p.m. Friday at Westview Cemetery in Liberty.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hope Health & Rehab of Marietta & Ark Hospice for their loving care.

Patricia (Pat) Powell Saxon

Easley — Patricia (Pat) Powell Saxon, 71, of 112 C Pinnacle Lane died Sunday, May 18, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with a very rare disease called Multiple System Atrophy or MSA.

She was a native of Pickens County and daughter of the late O.D. Powell and Lucille Smith Powell. She was employed for 38 years with Wachovia Bank, formerly known as South Carolina National Bank. She worked for 35 years in the Pickens branch and retired as a Vice President in 2000. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Easley, where she participated in the 5-6-7 Club and dearly loved the Friendship Club. Her hobby was traveling with her husband, Lonnie Saxon, sister Betty Carman, and brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Carolyn Powell. They traveled extensively across the USA and Canada. Pat was married to Lonnie J. Saxon for 33 years and they raised two wonderful children, Robert J. Saxon and Shannon E. West. Jeff and his wife, Cindy, live in Bel Air, Maryland and have a son, Cole J. Saxon. Shannon and her husband, Larry, live in Kingston, Washington and also have a son, Jordan S. Sheppard.

She is survived by her beloved sister-in-law, Carolyn Powell of Pickens. She is also dearly loved by all her nieces and nephews. They are Tim Powell and his wife, Gladys Powell and their daughter, Jackie Powell and her two children, Kase Powell and Azarah Whithoff. Also, Debra Merck and her husband, Chris Merck and two daughters, Kayla Powell and Kristy Merck and grandson, Kyle Fennell. Also, Jackie Dale Walsh and her husband, Tom Walsh. Lynn Carman Jordan and David Jordan and their two children, Rob Jordan and Mary Carman Jordan. Also, Susan Hicks and her husband, Buddy Hicks and their two daughters, Caroline Hicks and Grace Hicks. In addition to all of these nieces and nephews, she also had a very, very dear friend and neighbor, Arline Hicks.

She was predeceased by her loving brother and sister, Charles E. Powell and Betty P. Carman, both from Pickens County.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Journey Hospice and the McCall Hospice House for the exceptional care that was given to Pat during her illness.

A service to celebrate Pat’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 21 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. John Adams and the Rev. Lewis Edwards officiating. The burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pat dearly loved flowers and they will be accepted, but desired any memorial contributions to be made to Easley First Baptist Church, 300 East First Avenue, Easley, SC 29640.

Glen Harris

Greenville — Harvey Glen Harris, 77, of 216 W. Carolina Avenue, died Monday at his residence.

Born in Tupelo, Miss., he was the widower of Addie Curry Harris and a son of the late Charles and Mattie Sappington Harris. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was retired from Con/Way Trucking Company. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #151 and the Easley Moose Lodge. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Wanda Arrington of the home and Glenda Tallant and her husband Stan of Oxford, Miss.; two sons, Tim Whitten and his wife Dorothy and Tony Whitten both of Easley; a sister, Edna Spain of Tupelo, Miss.; a brother, Charles Harris of Morganton, Ky.; a special longtime friend, Irene DiCataldo; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by three sons, Curtis, Wayne and Allan Harris; a sister Edith; a brother Leroy; and a special longtime friend, Norman DiCataldo.

Graveside services to honor the life of Mr. Harris were held at 11 a.m. Friday at Graceland Cemetery East. The Rev. Malcolm Rice, Sr. conducted the service.

Tony Pollard

 Easley — James “Tony” Pollard, 67, of 103 Grant Valley Road, died Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Anderson County, a son of the late Jim and Irene Mackey Pollard, Mr. Pollard retired as an instrumentation designer with Fluor Corp. and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Williams Pollard of the home; a son, Jason Pollard of Easley; a daughter, Courtney P. McDaniels and husband, Dustin, of Greer; and a grandson, Noland McDaniels.

Funeral services were at 4 p.m. Saturday at Rock Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. David Gallamore officiating. Burial followed in Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley.

Elizabeth Ramsay Merck McLemore

Harker Heights, Texas — Elizabeth Ramsay Merck McLemore 82, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, wife and friend died on Mother’s Day May 11, 2014 at 6:23 p.m.

She was born Oct. 9, 1931 in Central to Buck Ramsay and Annie Lucy Henderson. She loved God and stood strong in her faith until she was called home. Nannie, as she was known by most, loved her family and friends unconditionally.

Graveside services to honor the life of Mrs. McLemore were held at 2 p.m. Saturday May 17, at the Liberty Memorial Gardens in Liberty. Lillian B. Crenshaw

Pickens — Lillian Bolding Crenshaw 95, of Pickens, widow of Woodrow Crenshaw, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Her beloved Jesus entered her sleep and took her into His loving arms. Her faith and trust in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior delivered her into the joys of Heaven.

Born in Pickens County on May 26, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Lola Winchester Bolding and Ben Tillman Bolding. She was a lifelong member of Mountain View Baptist Church and retired from Utica Mohawk, Clemson after 26 years of service. She enjoyed life on the farm, especially growing her favorite flowers, Roses and Iris. Friends would ride by her home to admire the beauty of her flowers.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Delta & Neal Cantrell of Pickens, granddaughter, Lori (Bill) Sembert, step-grandchildren, Gary (Misty) Todd, Gary (Sonya) Cantrell, Bobby (Missie) Cantrell, Wesley (Jodi) Cantrell; sisters-in-law; Ruth Bolding and Ola Mae Crenshaw.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her son, Jerry D. Crenshaw, son-in-law, Don Griffith, brother, James W. Bolding, and sister, Kathleen B. Byrd.

Alice C. McClain

Easley — Alice Clark McClain, 48, of Easley and wife of Tommy W. Castell, died Wednesday May 13, 2014.
Alice was born in Greenville, the daughter of Roger Dale Johnson, Sr. and Rena Johnson, of Easley. She was a housewife and a member of Emmanuel Full Gospel Tabernacle Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are two daughters, Shannon Taylor Lane and Christy Taylor, both of Easley; three brothers, Rodney Clark, David Johnson and Scott Johnson, all of Easley; three sisters, Kathy Bowen and Cindy Bryant, both of Anderson and Jancie Culpepper, of Easley; grandchildren, Tristin Lane, Tyler Lane, Taylor Lane, Emilee Hopper and Brilee Hopper.

Mrs. McClain was predeceased by a brother, Roger Johnson Jr.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Monday at Fairview United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Helen Phillips

Easley — Helen Van Beusichen Phillips, 91, formerly of Crestview Road, wife of the late James William Phillips, died Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Magnolia’s of Easley.

Born in Ridgewood, N.J., the daughter of the late Henry and Elsa Sachse Van Beusichen, Mrs. Phillips was a graduate of the Ridgewood School of Business. She was a homemaker who loved working in her garden, journaling and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan Phillips Stroud and husband, Dr. Lawrence Stroud; two grandsons, Sam Young, Jr., and wife, Raegan and Todd Young and wife, Ashley; and four great-grandchildren, Abby, Emma, Morgan and Madison.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Phillips was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Levering.
Graveside services were 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18 at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Clovie Elizabeth McJunkin Lawson

Gainesville, Ga. —Clovie Elizabeth McJunkin Lawson was born July 10, 1920 and died on May 18, 2014 at the age of 93.

Born in Seneca in 1920, she moved to Tignall, Ga. at age 11 and then to

Gainesville, Ga. at age 16. She attended Gainesville Public schools and was a

graduate of Gainesville High School in 1937. She was on the first women’s basketball team from Gainesville High to play in a state playoff in 1936. She attended the University of Georgia and married L.D. in 1939. She was involved with her children as a leader in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire Girls and many grade mother duties. She and her husband L.D. were charter founders of Lakeview Academy. She was an active member of First Baptist Church for the past 80 years, where she served on many committees including teaching Sunday school in the

children’s department and was a member of the Winsome Sunday school class.

Mrs. Lawson is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Vince Davis, also by her son Gene Lawson and his wife Louise. Grandchildren: Nath Morris and wife Joy, Beth Morris Hemmer and husband, Lee, Chris Lawson, David Lawson, Claire Lawson, Eleanor Lawson, Taylor Davis and Travis Davis. Great-grandchildren: Megan Morris, Jennifer Morris, Emily Lawson, Isabella Durden. Brandon Wilson and Lauren Hemmer. Sister, Roena McJunkin of Newport News, Va. and a number of nieces, nephews, special friends and neighbors are Tommy and Monica Turner.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, L.D. Lawson, her beloved daughter, Elizabeth Dee Morris, her devoted son, George Dean Lawson and grandson, Jeffrey Scott Lawson; her parents, Elbert Nathaniel and Dossie McJunkin, brother, Guy McJunkin; sisters, Jeanette (Penny) McJunkin Morrison and Christine McJunkin Moss.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday May 21 at the First Baptist Church on Green Street. Interment will be Memorial Park Cemetery. Dr. Bill Coates and the Rev. Bruce Fields will officiate.

Clemson — Sybil Boatwright Webb, 82, died on Sunday, May 18, 2014.

She was born in Seneca, the daughter of the late Charles D. and Sue Thomas Boatwright. She was a homemaker, loved reading and was a member of Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Byron “Bud” Webb; a son, Ken Webb (Jeoung-Soo Lee), and a grandson, Byron A. L. Webb.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in Woodland Cemetery on the campus of Clemson University.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Wednesday at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central.

Her body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m., Thursday prior to the service.

Easley — Gaines Edward Corn, 91, of 214 Fairview Drive, died peacefully in his sleep, Monday, May 19, 2014 at his home.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Hillard Eastman and Lucy Thornton Corn, Mr. Corn retired from Alice Manufacturing Company and was a member of United Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Gentry Shirley Corn of the home; a sister, Vera Green of Newport, N.C.; a special nephew, Danny Richard; and two step-sons, Paul Shirley of Easley and Charles Shirley, Jr., of Albuquerque, N.M.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Corn was predeceased by his first wife, Margie Bagwell Corn, daughter, Pamela Lynn Shirley, four brothers, Robert, Carl, Lawrence and Clyde Corn, and by four sisters, Louise Gibson, Blanche Spearman, Ruth Byers and Lucille Richard.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

Visitation will be from 2:30 until 3:15 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, prior to the service.
