Carlyle Sutherland

Easley — Carlyle Jim Wash Sutherland, 72, of 104 Abigail Lane, died Monday, May 19, 2014 at Laurel Bay Health Care.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Clyde Cleveland and Annie Mae Rackley Sutherland, Mr. Sutherland retired from Gower Metal Enterprises in Greenville and was a member of Faith Independent Baptist Church in Cleveland.

Surviving are his wife, Juanita Shipman Sutherland of the home; a daughter, Judy Childs (Danny) of Easley; two sisters, Edna Mae King (Bill) and Edith Shipman (Leon), both of  Easley; two grandsons, Jason Childs and Michael Childs (Joni), and two great-granddaughters, Sadie Grace Childs and Scarlett Childs.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Sutherland was predeceased by four brothers, Cecil, Carl, Chester and Charles Sutherland, Sr.

Funeral services were at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

Burial followed in Georges Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Billy Allen Layman, Sr.

Liberty — Billy Allen Layman, Sr., 75, of 620 Hunter Mill Road, died Monday, May 19, 2014 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Owensboro, Ky., he was the widower of Jewell Kelley Layman and a son of the late Emmitt and Lillian Layman. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he worked for Greenville County and retired as the superintendant of the Roads and Bridges Dept. He enjoyed spending time with his family, farming, helping with Meals on Wheels, going to the Seniors Unlimited in both Liberty and Pickens and dancing at Cotton Eye Joe’s. He was also a member of Liberty United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Debra Brooks(Mark) of Liberty; a son, Billy Allen Layman, Jr. of Liberty; two sisters, Mildred Layman Hicks(Roy) of Owensboro, Ky. and Margaret “Sugar” Layman Gayesky of Texas; a brother, Delbert Willis Layman of Owensboro, Ky.; four grandsons, Kyle Layman(Chelsea), Nick Layman(Jill), Benjamin Brooks(Nancy) and Zachary Brooks(Ashton); and a great grandson, Colt Brooks; several beloved nieces and nephews, but especially, Billy Bollinger(Marna), Connie Winkler(Paul and Roy McKay Hicks(Marie).

In addition to his wife and parents he was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Scott Layman; two sisters, Louise Layman Wells and Pauline Layman Ambs; a brother, J.W. Layman; and a grandson, Jonathon Levi Brooks.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Layman were held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Miriam T. Arenberg

Easley — Mrs. Miriam Theresa Arenberg, 93, wife of the late Harold Christian Arenberg, died Sunday, May 18, 2014 at Magnolia’s of Easley.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., a daughter of the late Edwin Vincent and Doris May Lewis McCoy, Mrs. Arenberg was a homemaker and of the Catholic faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Fritzsche (Alan) of Pickens, and Dolores Mangun Richard) of Tifton, Ga.; a sister, Doris Myers of Elkhart, Ind.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

No services are planned at this time.

Mohoda Mulliken

Liberty — Mohoda Stancel Mulliken, 88, of 104 Wilson Avenue, died Tuesday at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Anderson, she was the widow of Marion Mulliken and a daughter of the late William A. and Alberta Gossett Stancel. She was retired from Dan River Mills and was of the Church of God faith. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Cathy King(Jim) of Easley; two sons, Jimmy Mulligan(Glenda) of Liberty and Billy Mulligan(Diane) of Piedmont; three grandchildren, Richard Mulligan(Tansi), Kimberly Young(Robin) and Kristie Grimes(Robbie); and four great grandchildren, Marion Mulligan, Mason Mulligan, Coleman Grimes and Abby Grimes.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Ina Smith, Gladys Bowen and Martha Fowler; and two brothers, Milton and Melvin Stancel.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Mulliken were held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Westview Cemetery.

Jeremy Michael Whitlock

Six Mile — Jeremy M. Whitlock, 29, died Tuesday, May 20, 2014.

Born in Greenville the son of Barry and Elizabeth Christine “Chris” Bates Whitlock, Jeremy was a substitute teacher and employed full time working in the After School Program at Six Mile Elementary School. The things he loved most include his family, teaching, history, reading, music, going to the movies, and Friday nights watching Grimm and Hannibal with his sister and mother. Jeremy’s hobbies included soccer, working out, running and cooking.

Left to cherish his memory include his parents and his sister Elizabeth Jessi Lou Whitlock all of the home, maternal grandparents; Charles and Frankie Bates of Pickens, paternal grandmother; Linda Joyce Whitlock of Liberty, uncles; Chuck Bates and Duane Herndon of Gray Court, an aunt; Annette (Isaac) Ramey of Easley, cousins; Sarah Mullinnix, Cameron Ramey, Joshua Mullinnix, Michael (Brooke) Mullinnix, Miles Mullinnix, Hudson Mullinnix, Toby Jason (Amber) Mullinnix, Sebastian, Skyler and Payton Mullinnix all of Greenville, an aunt; Rebecca Bates, cousins; Blake Bates and Catlin Devall all of Easley, an uncle Tony Mullinnix of Greer, an uncle Brian Whitlock, cousins; Sarah (Jeremy) Hallums, Levi Whitlock, Duncan (Wynn) Whitlock, Pacey Whitlock, Lyle Whitlock, and Tracey Stewart of Liberty, an uncle; Brad Whitlock and cousin; Elyse Whitlock of Liberty, Uncle Brandon (Jessica) Whitlock, cousins; Landon Whitlock and Sidney Whitlock all of Six Mile, aunt Brooke (Chris) Addis and cousin; Mason Addis of West Union, aunt; Brittany (Byron) Wimphrie, cousins; Elynn and Banks Wimphrie all of Liberty.

Jeremy was preceded in death by a grandfather; Cecil Lamar Whitlock and great grandparents; Ernest and Sarah Nell Whitlock, Leonard “Shorty” and Jimmie Lou Oates and Sarah Elizabeth Moody.

The family celebrated Jeremy’s life with a memorial service 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home.

Donnie Gilstrap

Easley — Donald Clay “Donnie” Gilstrap, 53, of 107 Quiet Lane, died on Wednesday, May 21, 2014.

Born in Pickens he was a son of the late Willard Ello and Sarah Bowen Gilstrap. Donnie loved nothing more than spending time with his precious grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Wyman Gilstrap of the home; a daughter, Tristan McClain and her husband Nic, and their two children, Rylee & Levi all of Liberty; a son, James Butler and his wife Sarah, and their two children, Alexis & Jaythan all of Hampton, Va.; a sister, Kathy Cassell of Pickens; two brothers, Randall Gilstrap of Liberty, and Timmy Gilstrap of Westminster.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Gilstrap.

The family gathered to remember and celebrate Donnie’s life on Saturday, May 24 in the Community Building of Cedar Rock Church of God, 2114 Ireland Road, Easley SC at 12:30 p.m.

Estelle H. Evans

Six Mile — Estelle Hudson Evans, 92, formerly of Powder Mill Road, and wife of the late Charles Hampton Evans, Jr. died Friday, May 23, 2014.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late David and Annie Abercrombie Hudson. Mrs. Evans was a retired Postmaster of the Six Mile Post Office and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, Artie Gravely Circle.

Surviving are her children, Johnny Evans of Seneca, Libby Cope of Anderson and Jerry Evans of Mt. Pleasant.

Mrs. Evans was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by three brothers and four sisters.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, May 25 at 4 p.m. in the mausoleum chapel of Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Danny L. Robertson

Pickens — Danny Lee Robertson, 66, of Newton Avenue, husband of Wanda Byers Robertson, died Saturday, May 24, 2014.

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late Sidney Lee and Edna Mae Richardson Robertson. Danny was retired from Duke Energy. He was a member of Cove Creek Baptist Church, was a volunteer with the Pickens Rescue Squad for several years and was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home is a sister, Sandra Mason of Easley; and a brother-in-law, Heyward Byers (Diane) of Six Mile.

A graveside service was May 25 at 3 p.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Frances L. Griswold (Polly)

Williamson, GA — Frances L. Griswold (Polly), 80, died Friday May 23, 2014 at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin, Ga.

Polly was born on Oct. 27, 1933 in Greenville, one of nine children born to Sarah Jane Ross Burns and Pinckney Burns. She married the late Orley Ava Griswold on Jan. 9, 1954 and together they enjoyed 24 years of travel and adventure in the Air Force and 40 years of marriage.

Polly is survived by a brother, Pinckney Burns, Jr.; five children, Teresea Bible (Donnie) of Palmetto, Ga., Jerry Griswold (Patti) of Salley, Phillip Griswold (Windy) of Pinopolis, Jane Lewis (Sid) of Pickens and Ava Kearney of Williamson, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Michelle Cantrell (Doug), Jennifer Johnson (Dan), Joanna Rodriguez (Zackery), Abbi Griswold, Lauran Henderson (Josh), Sarah Hamby, Ross Hamby (Monica), Nicole Kearney and Devon Kearney; and five great grandchildren.

A service to celebrate Polly’s life was held on Monday, May 26 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Minnie Gantt

Easley — Minnie Lee Porter Gantt, 92, wife if the late William Benjamin Gantt, died Thursday, ay 22, 2014 at her residence.

Born in Pickens County, Mrs. Gantt was a daughter of the late Elbert T. and Ruth Freeman Porter. She retired from Sangamo and was a member of Glenwood
Methodist Church.

She is survived by a nephew, Phil Ragsdale (Ginger); a niece, Mim Putnam (Wayne); nine nieces and four nephews; one great- niece, Kristen Ragsdale; two great nephews, Ty Medlin and Brian Ragsdale and one great-great nephew, Caysen Griffin.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Ruthell P. Ragsdale; one brother, J.T. Porter.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Pickens.
