Man charged with felony in wreck that claimed son
ANDERSON — The father of a 10-year-old Crosswell Elementary student who died in a car accident last month now faces felony charges related to the wreck.
According to Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Joey Kelley, 32, of Inman, faces felony DUI and child endangerment charges in the crash that claimed the life of his son, Keelan Preston Cruz Odom.
The Crosswell fourth grader lost his life in the morning hours of February 28 on U.S. 178 in Anderson County, when highway patrol officers say Kelley’s Jeep veered off the road before he overcorrected and crossed into the path of an oncoming SUV. After the collision, the Jeep careened down an embankment and both of the vehicle’s occupants were ejected. Neither wore seatbelts.
Odom was pronounced dead at Greenville Memorial Hospital, while his father was transported to AnMed Health in Anderson and placed in ICU.
Following Kelley’s release from AnMed Health Medical Center last Thursday, he was arrested and booked at the Anderson County jail.
