Pickens — John Richard “Dick” “3 Feathers” Hall, 70, husband of Lori Jayne Hayward Hall, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014 at his home.

Dick was born in Ottawa, Canada a son of the late John William and Mary Agnes Shields Hall. He was retired from Winn Dixie in Orlando as a diesel mechanic. He was a member of the Native American Christian Ministries.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Lori, of the home, a son, Bill Hall (Tammy) of Jacksonville, Fla. and a daughter, Marsha Hall of Orlando, Fla. Also surviving is a brother, Doug Hall (Davida) of Silver Spring, Md. and a grandson, Shaun Hall.

Johnny Smith, Sr.

Easley — Johnny Grant Smith, Sr., 76, husband of Ina Eyvonne Harris Smith, died Saturday Oct. 11, 2014 at his residence.

Born in Stanly County, N.C., to the late Lee Adam and Esther Hinson Smith, Johnny enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after graduating from Oakboro High School. He served in the military for four years as a weapons mechanic and, after being honorably discharged, began work for Steadman Millers Mill as a knitting machine mechanic and later as a knitting machine technician. Mr. Smith was an avid bowler and also enjoyed golfing, fishing, reading and gardening. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, is a son, Johnny Smith, Jr. (Rhonda) of Easley; two sisters, Patsy Smith of Locust, N.C. and Alta Lee Gilmore of Va.; and four grandchildren, Stephen Lee Smith, Samuel Adam Smith, Shawn Douglas Smith and L Cpl Micheal Logan Smith.

Memorial services were 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 at MJ Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery, Anderson with Military Honors.

Bill Hughes

Central — William Leander “Bill” Hughes, 80, of Windy Hill Road, husband of the late Martha Hendricks “Cricket” Hughes, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2014 at his home.

Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late Isaac and Willie Roper Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. Following retirement, he was a real estate agent, taught at Tri-County Technical College and most recently was the President of the Oconee County Home Builders Association. Mr. Hughes served as a UN Peacekeeper in the Belgian Congo, flew into hurricanes to track dangerous storms, and spent many years in air force intelligence. More recently, he volunteered with the Alzheimer’s Association.

Surviving is a son, William Brian Hughes (Ellen) of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Lydia and Gretchen Hughes.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a son, Bruce Wayne Hughes and a brother, John Hughes.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens with entombment following in the mausoleum of Hillcrest Memorial Park, with full military honors.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dorian Hopkins

Easley — Dorian Leigh Hopkins, 64, husband of Sheryl Dickard Hopkins, passed away Wednesday Oct. 15, 2014 at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Laurens County, SC, to the late Harry Grady and Mary Baldwin Hopkins, Dorian was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was employed with three different Law Enforcement agencies, first with the City of Easley as a dispatcher and detention officer; then worked for Greenville County before finally working federal security at BMW. Dorian was a family man who greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Jason T. Hopkins (Stephanie) and Joshua K. Hopkins (Krystal), both of Easley; a daughter, Adrienne L. Hopkins of Easley; two brothers, Reverend Daryl K. Hopkins (Dee) of Taylors and Duane E. Hopkins (Julie) of Greenville; nine grandchildren, Tiffany, Timothy, McKenzie, Jesi, Chase, Trinity, Gabriel, Samantha, and Kendall. Dorian is also survived by one great-grandchild, Kylee and his true southern belle sidekick whom he called his four legged daughter, Savannah.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, David B. and Sharon Hopkins.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown with the Reverend Daryl Hopkins officiating.

Visitation was held from 1 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. on Saturday prior to the service at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

The family is at the residence.

Frances H. Harden

Pickens — Frances Hoffman Harden, 94, of Hollingsworth Drive and wife of the late Dr. John Maxwell Harden, M.D., died Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, surrounded by her family.

Born in Charleston, she was the daughter of the late Howard Cleveland Hoffman and Rubye Crim Hoffman. Mrs. Harden was a graduate of Roper School of Nursing in Charleston where she met her husband studying at the Medical College of SC (now MUSC). She retired after many years as a Registered Nurse having worked for her husband for over 20 years. She was devoted to him during their 51 years of marriage. She taught the Candy Stripers at Cannon Memorial Hospital, was a past President of the Pickens County Medical Auxiliary and was a member of Pickens Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed spending time gardening in her yard filled with beautiful azaleas and caring for and viewing her outdoor birds, but not as much as she loved being with her family.

Surviving are her children, John Maxwell “Rocky” Harden, Jr. (June), Margaret “Peggy” Anthony (Ricky), Howard H. Harden (Diane) and Dixon E. Harden (Donna) all of Pickens; nine grandchildren, Frankie Abercrombie Broom (Chris), John Abercrombie (Jessica), Shannon Harden O’Boyle (Henry), Holly Harden, John Maxwell Harden, III, Erikka Anthony Chapman (Terry Lee), Nikki Anthony Hope (Riley), Drew Harden and Dawson Harden; and 15 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Ann Abercrombie Wolfe; and a granddaughter, Melissa Diane Harden.

The family would like to express appreciation to the staff of both Manna Health and Rehab and Ark Hospice for the excellent care given to Mrs. Harden.

A service to celebrate Mrs. Harden’s life was held on Friday, Oct. 17 at 11:30 a.m. at Pickens Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Gladys Ellenburg Welborn

Easley — Gladys Ellenburg Welborn, 81, a lifelong resident of Easley, SC, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014 at The Willows of Easley.  Gladys was the oldest daughter of the late Barney Buford and Edna Brooks Ellenburg.

Gladys was a 1951 graduate of Easley High School where she was a member of the Beta Club and was head cheerleader for the Green Wave.  Gladys was a former member of the Pickens Area Personnel Association and retired from Piedmont Natural Gas Propane Division.

Gladys was an active, lifelong member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for over fifty years.  For many years, she was a member of the choir and the Lucille Searcy Circle.  She was a former director of the Pickens County Methodist Youth Fellowship and influenced the lives of countless Methodist youth.

Gladys is survived by her beloved daughter Kim, “the light of her life.” Also surviving are her loving sister Gloria Phillips and her husband Jerry, and her sister-in-law Pauline Ellenburg.  In addition, Gladys is survived by many extended family members. In 2007, Gladys was predeceased by her brother Tony.

A service to celebrate the life of Gladys Ellenburg Welborn was held Monday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 309 Pelzer Highway Easley. Burial followed at Zion United Methodist Church, 432 Zion Church Road Easley.

The family would like to express appreciation to the staff of The Willows of Easley and Piedmont Hospice for their loving care of Gladys during her recent illness.  The family would also like to thank Dr. Larry Gluck, Dr. Steven Johnson, Dr. Richard Banks, Dr. James Robbins, Dr. John Cox, and Dr. John McBurney for their exceptional medical care of Gladys during her many illnesses.

THE Rev. Larry Green

Easley — The Rev. Larry Steve Green, 67, of Yorktowne Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2014 at his home.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Talmadge and Margaret Bagwell Green.

Reverend Green was a minister for 15 years with New Hope Apostolic Church in Pickens. He also was employed with F.W. Woolworth at the Donaldson Center in Greenville for 23 years and was a member of The Fathers Vineyard Church in Pickens.

Surviving are his wife of the home, Rebecca Suits Green; three sons, Stevie Green, Pastor Tim Green (Elvie) and Tory Green (Tiffany); eight grandchildren, Michala, Emily, Ethan, Kyle, Kylie, Lucas, Kingsley and Easton Green; a daughter-in-law, Shanna Green; and a brother, Danny Joe Green (Linda) of Greenville.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Cliff Green.

A service to celebrate Reverend Green’s life was on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

Helen Moore

Liberty — Helen Porter Moore, 84, of 3 Jackson Street, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 at Baptist Easley Hospital. Born in Greenville she was the widow of Clyde D. Moore, and a daughter of the late James and Mary Morgan Porter.

She was retired from Emtex Textiles, and was a member of Liberty Church of God.

Surviving are three daughters, Deborah Freeman of Lowell, NC, Mary Lesley of Liberty, and Carol Moore of Easley; two sons, Randall Moore of Gray Court, and Robert Moore of Liberty; a sister, Betty Jo Shirley of Liberty; a brother, Jimmy Porter of Greenville; 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Judy Bailey, and Shirley Gillespie, a brother, Willie Porter, and a grandchild, Drew Lesley.

Graveside service to honor Mrs. Moore’s life was 1:30 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Central.

William A. Jewell

Easley — Mr. William Arthur Jewell, 71 died Friday, Oct. 17, 2014. Born in Easley, a son of the late Arthur William Jewell and the late Irene Carter McCarthy, Mr. Jewell retired from Duke Power and attended Flat Rock Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Glenda Henson of Easley, and Shannon Calhoun of Liberty; one brother, Richard Jewell; one sister, Annette James; six grandchildren, Leslie, Alisha and Tamara Henson, Johnathon Brooks, Oscar Blue and Ben Hughes; and one great-grandchild, Brayden Henson. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jewell was predeceased by two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Monday Oct. 20 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home -Downtown. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Gladys E. Stansell

Easley — Gladys Edens Stansell, 83, of Easley and wife of the late Quillen Thomas “Q.T.” Stansell died Friday, Oct. 17, 2014.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Ola Keith Edens.Mrs. Stansell was retired from Milliken (Judson Plant) and was a member of Enon Baptist Church. She also volunteered for several years with Baptist Easley Hospital.

Surviving are her niece, Paula Haskett; two grandchildren, Mandy Copeland and Nathan Haskett; and three great grandchildren, Kaylee and Rilee Copeland and Piper Haskett.

Mrs. Stansell was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters.

Funeral services was held on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home entombmented followed in the mausoleum of Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Easley — Mary Elizabeth Cathey Lesley, 83, of Anthony Road, Easley. Wife of the late J.D. Lesley passed away Friday, Octo. 17, 2014.

Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Annie Bell Graham Cathey.Mrs. Lesley was retired from Ryobi and was a member of Blue Ridge View Baptist Church.

Surviving are her children, Patsy Taylor (Charles), David Lesley (Linda), Larry Lesley and Sammy Lesley all of Easley; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a brother, Lee Wood of Pickens; and three sisters, Ellon Hancock of Easley, Marie Wooten and Shirley Chastain both of Pickens.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Lesley and a sister, Louise King.

Funeral services was held on Monday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge View Baptist Church burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brad Durham, Alexander Simmons, Timmy Merrell, Jason Alexander, Phillip James and Andy Gantt.

McConnell Williams

Marietta — Teresa McConnell Williams, 51, of 273 Holloway Road, Marietta, wife of William Scott Williams, died Thursday Oct. 16, 2014.

Mrs. Williams was born on July 30, 1963, to Harold W. and Nancy Cantrell McConnell. She graduated from Pickens High School, and she was secretary and co-owner of McConnell Grading and Underground Utilities. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and riding motorcycles and was a member of Nine Forks Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Williams is survived by a son, Kade M. Pittman; 3 step-sons; Jared Williams (Morgan), Logan Williams, and Brannon Williams; a brother, Jason McConnell (Susie); two grandchildren, Addison L. Williams and Dakota Williams. Mrs. Williams is also survived by a niece, Katie McConnell, and a nephew; Drew McConnell.

Funeral Services was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown with the Rev. Tim McConnell officiating. Entombment followed in the Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum at Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road Easley.
