Central Clemson Rec hosts pickleball clinic

On Saturday, July 22, a pickleball clinic took place at Central Clemson Recreation Center (CCRC) in Central. CCRC member Gus Gustafson organized the event to introduce pickleball to beginners. He was assisted by six volunteers experienced in the game. Leading small groups were Christine Lightsey, Mike Fisher, Ned Coryell, Richard Lowe, Sandra Lowe and Laurie Sharrod, who shared topics such as safety, equipment, rules, scoring, player positions, strategies and serving techniques with participants. All participants had a chance to play as they learned. “We had 30 people, aged 8 to 78,” Gustafson said. “Everyone was enthusiastic, and they learned a lot. Thanks to CCRC for providing space and equipment for our event.” The clinic was open to the public and free of charge.

Easley native serves aboard future Navy warship

MAYPORT, Fla. – Petty Officer 1st Class Marcus Burroughs, a native of Easley, South Carolina, serves aboard Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) Marinette, in Mayport, Florida.

PCU is a designation used by the U.S. Navy to describe crews aboard vessels under construction prior to official commissioning.

‘Hee Haw’ coming to Hagood Center

PICKENS — The Hagood Community Center proudly presents an all new presentation of our favorite comedy/musical show, HEE HAW.

There is a an all-new cast, some new songs, and plenty of new jokes that will send you home with a smile on your face. Showings are set for August 26, at 4 p.m. and another at 7 p.m.

There should be a full house for both presentations so get your tickets early at the center MWF from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 each and are limited to auditorium capacity. All proceeds benefit the Hagood Community Center.

Scout Troop 51 enjoy summer camp

Members of Scout Troop 51 recently had a great week at summer camp at Camp Old Indian. They completed 22 merit badges and started on many more. First-year Scouts completed the Pathfinder program to gain basic Scouting skills.

Mavis open in Pickens

Mavis Tire and Brakes held its grand opening recently in Pickens. The new tire shop, located beside Burger King on U.S. Highway 178, is excited to be in Pickens, and the staff is looking forward to seeing business continue to grow.
