Pickens church to host benefit for area man battling cancer

PICKENS — A hot dog benefit with prizes and singing will be held this Saturday, Dec. 11, to help with medical bills for Brad Curtis at Amazing Grace Fellowship, located at 229 Pearl St. in Pickens.

Hot dogs will start being served at 10 a.m. in the church fellowship hall, and the singing will begin at 6 p.m. inside the church.

Curtis was diagnosed in 2014 with renal cell carcinoma in the kidneys. The doctors did a partial kidney removal. In 2018, it metastasized into his right femur. He underwent radiation. There was a rod inserted in his right leg to

Bahá’ís commemorate 100th anniversary of the Ascension

EASLEY — In honor of the 100th anniversary of the passing of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, who departed on Nov. 27, 1921, the Baha’is of Easley and Pickens County presented a framed artwork of the “Golden Rule” and a “oneness of humanity” multi-color pinned ribbon to Easley Mayor Butch Womack and the city council cembers during their monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 8.

Thee gifts are a symbol of the oneness of humanity, representing the universal message taught by all religions of the world, that we should show forth kindliness, compassion and respect toward one another, as we ourselves wish to be treated.

• Story Time Plus programs planned

Each month, Boxwood Manor, located in Pendleton, and Collins Ole Towne, located in Central, are sites for Story Time Plus programs and Homeschool Days. Story Time Plus runs 10-11:30 a.m. and is designed for ages 8 and under. Admission is $3 for each child age 5 or older, with a $10 household maximum.
Homeschool Day runs from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and is designed for ages 6 through 14. Admission is $5 for ages 6 and over, with a $15 household maximum.

• Legion Post 52 plans events for holidays

American Legion Post 52 will present the Wreaths Across America program at Robinson Memorial Garden at 10 a.m. Dec. 18. Anyone wishing to lay a wreath at the ceremony or just support the program is asked to send a check of $15 for each wreath to American Legion Post 52, 118A Legion St., Easley, SC 29642.
American Legion Post 52 sells American flags and South Carolina flags, all made in the USA. Everyone is invited.

• Pumpkintown to host tree lighting

Pumpkintown will soon be getting into the Christmas spirit with the community’s first-ever Christmas tree lighting event. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the music of Josh Johnson with a cup of hot chocolate and some Christmas cookies.
The event will start at 5 p.m. at the intersection of S.C. Highway 8 and S.C. Highway 135 on Dec. 3. There will be lots of Christmas caroling and a bonfire.

Cars, toys and fun in Pickens

Hot rods were on display last Saturday in downtown Pickens for the second annual Country Santa Toy and Food Drive. More than 450 toys and $5,000 in donations were raised. A pickup truck full of food was split between two Upstate food pantries. There were still toy boxes that hadn’t been brought in as of Tuesday, so organizers believe this year’s event brought in at least 10 times last year’s total. Pickens Mayor Fletcher Perry was among the event’s attendees, and even old St. Nick himself showed up in a hot rod.

Rec center to be named for former director

PICKENS — The Pickens Recreation Center will soon bear the name of a woman who worked for the recreation department for more than 25 years.

During a special called meeting Monday night, Pickens City Council voted unanimously in favor of a resolution renaming the center the Cheri Terrapin Anthony Recreation Center.

Anthony retired as Pickens Recreation Department director earlier this year.

A 1983 graduate of Limestone College, Anthony began working at the Pickens Recreation Department in 1995 and became director in 1998.

In 2018, Anthony won the S.C. Athletic Programs Branch Professional of the Year award. In
