MARY HOWARD TAYLOR NOLAND
CENTRAL — Mary Howard Taylor Noland, 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her daughter’s home on Thursday, April 2, 2020.
Born Aug. 20, 1924, in Hanover, Va., she was a daughter of the late Mary Ann Hutchison Taylor and the late Howard Winston Taylor. Mary was married to Gilbert Lealand Noland until his death in 1998.
Mary was an active member of Providence Baptist Church and the Martha Iley Sunday School Class in Charlotte, N.C. She began working in the banking industry at Tri-County Bank after graduation from Panama Business School in Hanover, Va., and finished her career as a personal banker with Wachovia Bank in Charlotte. Her hobbies varied, from being a founding member of the Hanover Jitter Bug Club to spending time on the Chesapeake Bay to being a teacher for Providence Baptist Church Rama Road Tutoring to extensive world travel with her husband, Gil. Later in life, her favorite way to spend time was sharing her home at Litchfield Beach with family and friends. She loved watching her great-grandson play and called him “Baby Dumpling.”
Mary, affectionately known as Grandé, was a kind, generous and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Stanfield Noland Bridges (William Carroll Bridges Jr.) of Central; her son, Gilbert Lealand Noland Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; three

GERALD WAYNE NODINE
CENTRAL — Gerald Wayne Nodine passed from this life on Sunday, March 22, 2020, at the age of 73, at Regency LTAC Hospital in Greenville.
His caregiver, Ruth Nodine, and daughter, Cindy, were by his side.
Born to Paul Grady and Dorothy Inez Nodine in Greer on March 29, 1946, Gerald was the second of two children. He graduated from Greer High School with the Class of 1964. A Vietnam veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1973, attaining the rank of captain. In 1970, while stationed at Fort Jackson, Capt. Nodine married Ruth Gregory. Two years later, while stationed in Clemson, they became the parents of quadruplets. He remained in Clemson/Central following his discharge to raise their family.
After working various jobs and studying at Tri-County Technical College, Gerald acquired a job with Clemson University. He retired from Clemson University after many years as a technician for the School of Mechanical Engineering in the graduate student research lab.
Gerald is survived by two daughters and two sons, Edie and husband Cheney Brunner of Cincinnati, Ohio, Cindy and husband Chris Greaves of Tallahassee, Fla., Paul Nodine of Central and Greg and wife Deb Nodine of Central; nine grandchildren: Jack and Robert Brunner, Kara, Michael and Timothy Greaves, Jacob and wife Megan, Joshua, Jordan and Joseph Nodine.
He was predeceased by both parents and his brother, James Nodine.
The Cremation Society of SC – Westville Funerals is handling details. No funeral will be held at this time. A VA service at a national cemetery will be scheduled for a later date.

GERALD ELLENBURG
PICKENS — Gerald Dennis Ellenburg, 74, husband of Laura (Veda) Medlin Ellenburg, passed from this life on Thursday, March 26, 2020.
Mr. Ellenburg was born in Pickens County, son of the late Albert and Mary Dodgen Ellenburg. He was retired from Ellenburg Nursing Center in Anderson and he served his country as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Mr. Ellenburg was a member of Roanoke Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Laura (Veda) Ellenburg of the home; his son, Dennis Ellenburg (Sandy) of Pickens; and grandson, Anthony Alexander Ellenburg. Also surviving is a sister, Marilyn Cooper of Pickens.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Ellenburg was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Ladd Hamby, and brothers, Joel and Marcus Ellenburg.
Graveside services were conducted at Hillcrest Memorial Park, with the Rev. Justin Medlin officiating.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Interim Hospice for the loving care given to Mr. Ellenburg during his last illness.

WILMA C. GILLESPIE
PICKENS — Wilma Coleman Gillespie, 89, widow of Garth S. Gillespie, passed from this life on Monday, March 23, 2020, in Pickens.
Born on Oct. 18, 1930, in Lowell, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Fred Coleman and Bertha McKinna Coleman. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church. She enjoyed her life as a homemaker, mother and babysitter to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was happiest when her house was full.
In addition to her husband, Wilma was preceded in death by sisters, Louise Coleman, Sophia Pace and Ruth Morris; brother, Jim Coleman; son-in-law, Gary Wortman; and grandson, Travis Wortman.
Surviving are her children, David Gillespie, Linda Wortman, John Gillespie, Sandy Gillespie (Barry Durham), Joan Williams (Mark), Robert Gillespie, Roger Gillespie (Linda), Kenneth Gillespie, Lisa Lewis (Mark) and Jeff Gillespie; and beloved sister, Betty Bowie (Charlton). DON GRANT
PICKENS — Mr. Donald Sidney Grant Sr., 79, husband of Carol Jo Reeves Grant, died on Monday, March 9, 2020, at his residence.
Born in Walhalla, Mr. Grant was a son of the late Sidney C. and Sula Gillepie Grant.
Don was a lifelong resident of Pickens. He was the owner of the Grant Body Shop and the former owner of Grant Ford Inc. He was also involved in many other business throughout his life, including Grant Lumber Company and Grant Brothers Chip Company.
He was very active in the Pickens community, serving as a volunteer fireman for the Pickens Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pickens for more than 40 years. Throughout his life, he served on several boards including the Pickens County

FURMAN DOUGLAS VICKERY
CENTRAL — Furman Douglas (Doug) Vickery, 77, husband of Norma H. Vickery, died on Sunday, March 1, 2020.
He was a son of the late Furman Dodd and Pauline Harris Vickery.
Doug served eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve. He received an AA degree from Anderson College and a BS degree from Clemson University. His textile industry career included work with M. Lowenstein Co., first at the Rockingham, N.C., Aleo plant, then at Anderson Wamsutta I and II plants, and at J.P. Stevens’ Clemson plant, where he was distribution manager.
In later years, Doug worked with his brother Jerry D. Vickery at the Easley Progress newspaper. During retirement years, he enjoyed designing and fabricating farm equipment. He also enjoyed participating in teamwork projects to assist missionaries in Utah and Canada.
He was a member of University Baptist Church and also attended Welcome Baptist Church.

BRUCE GRIFFIN
PICKENS — Mr. Bruce White Griffin, 67, of Pickens went to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his loving family on Friday, Feb. 28, 2020.
Born in Pickens, he was the son of the late Columbus Griffin and Sarah Stegall Griffin, and husband of Betty Jean Grant Griffin.
Bruce enjoyed coin collecting and watching his son’s dirt track races, but most of all enjoyed his loving and precious family.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife Betty of 47 years; two sons, Barry Griffin (Jennifer) of Pickens and Benji Griffin (Stacey) of Liberty; a daughter, Barbara Pilgrim (Tony) of Liberty; three brothers,

BOBBY DALE BARNETT
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Bobby Dale Barnett of Stone Mountain, Ga., died on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020, at the age of 92. He was a former professor and department head at Clemson University.
Born on a farm near Elm Springs, Ark., on Aug. 12, 1927, he was the oldest son of Tommy Lewis and Mary Grace Boss Barnett.
He received BSA and MS degrees from the University of Arkansas in 1950 and 1954 and a Ph.D. in biochemistry and poultry science with emphasis in nutrition from the University of Wisconsin in 1957.
He and his wife, Bonnie, operated a hatchery in Springdale, Ark., from 1950-53.
He was employed at Clemson University from 1956 to 1988, serving as assistant professor, associate professor, professor and head of the Poultry Science Department. After a sabbatical at the University of Hawaii, he returned to Clemson as acting Associate Director of the South Carolina Experiment Station and later served as Assistant to the Vice President of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Dr. Barnett was active in the Poultry Science Association, a national professional organization. He served the association as a director, associate editor, annual program chairman and as secretary-treasurer.
He served as director, vice president and president of the American Poultry Historical Society and was author of a chapter of a history book issued by the society. He was a member of the American Institute of Nutrition and a life member of the World’s Poultry Science Association. He was the author or co-author of more than 100 scientific papers, as well as numerous articles for the popular press.
He was a U.S. Naval Reserve veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Marsh, a destroyer escort, in the Pacific theater during 1945-46.
He married Bonnie Porter in 1948, and they were parents of twin sons, Paul and Ronald, born in 1953, and a daughter, Susan, born in 1960.
He had a great appreciation for nature, enjoyed camping and growing flowers, especially rhododendrons, of which he became expert.
The Barnetts loved to travel, and after his retirement they traveled around the world, often with grandchildren.
During retirement, Barnett did extensive research on family history and compiled several books on the various branches of his and Bonnie’s families. He also took up watercolor painting as a hobby during his retirement years.
He and his wife split their time between St. Petersburg, Fla., Clemson and the Atlanta area during retirement, spending their last 12 years together at Park Springs, a retirement community adjacent to Stone Mountain Park. He shared his wife’s love of music and served as master of ceremonies, storyteller and part-time singer for an old-time music group she led at Park Springs called the Stone Mountaineers.
Surviving are his spouse, Bonnie; sons Paul (Janice) of Fort Myers, Fla., and Ron (Kathy) of Easley; daughter Susan Rohrabaugh (Mike) of Norcross, Ga.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. One grandson preceded him in death.
A memorial service was held Monday at Park Springs Community Hall in Stone Mountain, Ga., followed by a reception.
Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery on the Clemson campus. A service will be held in Clemson at a date and time yet to be determined.

CHRISTOPHER LANE PRICE
EASLEY — Mr. Christopher Lane Price, 46, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Feb. 21, 2020.
Mr. Price was born in Greenville County, and was the son to Ms. Barbara Ann Jordan and husband to his loving wife, Kathy Price. He was the son of the late James Gerald Price.
Mr. Price loved his family and loved having them around him. A retired Army veteran of the Iraq War, Christopher learned to love building things. He loved construction and also earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida Metropolitan University. He served the Army in the Military Police and as a sig support systems specialist. Nothing pleased him more than having his family in his presence.

RICH RUDOLPH “RUDY” HAYES
PICKENS — Rudy Hayes, 85, husband of Nell Bolding Hayes, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family.
Born in Pickens, a son of the late Louise Ferguson Hayes and Rich Hayes, Rudy Hayes was a graduate of Pickens High School, where he played football from 1951-1954, winning a state championship in 1952. Rudy played with the Clemson Tigers from 1955-1959. He played in the Orange Bowl (1957) and the Sugar Bowl (1959). His professional football career was with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1959-1962. Memberships included the Mason Lodge of Pickens and Gideons International of Pickens. He served in the jail ministry at the Pickens County Law Enforcement Center. Rudy managed Owens-Dillard Marine Sales until it closed and later retired from Grant Ford of Pickens.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years; two daughters, Teresa Landers (Mike) of Dacusville and Linda Constance (Chris) of Pickens; one son, David Hayes (Amy) of Pickens; 12 grandchildren,

EASLEY — Mrs. Lillian Gillespie Chapman, 90, wife of the late Dewey Odell Chapman, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, Feb. 3, 2020.
Born in Anderson County, a daughter of the late Vanwyck Jerry Gillespie and the late Emma Smith Gillespie, Mrs. Chapman was a graduate of Easley High School and retired from the Elljean Plant of Alice Manufacturing Company with 50 years of service. She was a member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church, where she belonged to the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.
