Courier Obituaries 9-11-19

PHILLIPPE A. COURNOYER

PICKENS — Phillippe A. Cournoyer, 77, of Pickens, born in Webster, Mass., May 29, 1942, went to be with his Lord on Sept. 8, 2019.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 54 years, Diane, and his beloved family, including his son Stephen, daughter-in-law Jennifer, and grandchildren Levi, Maggie and Lucille. He leaves behind two brothers, Robert (Joan) and Lawrence, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Phil was a proud Navy man for 20 years and retired as a chief engineman. A disabled veteran, he was a member of the American Legion Post 11, having served as a past commander and zone commander. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Peter Villano Council 9576. He was a charter member of the Fr. Barney Lohmann Assembly 3065 in Pickens, where he served as a faithful navigator and color corps commander. Phillippe served on the Pickens County Literacy Society and was a charter member of OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute.

He loved his community and was not afraid of hard work. He was known for his woodworking and loved his gardening and travel and was a collector of American history. Phillippe was a man with stories to share, a big voice and an even larger heart for anyone he met. He knew everyone in town.

A family wake will be held Wednesday evening, Sept. 11, 2019, from 5-7 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pickens, at 10 a.m. on

TOMMY BARRETT

LIBERTY — Thomas Mearl “Tommy” Barrett, 76, of 152 Pilgrim Family Lane, died on Friday, Aug. 23, 2019, at Manna Health and Rehab in Pickens.

Born in Pickens, he was a son of the late Aaron Earl Barrett and Frances Galloway Brown. He was retired from Alice Manufacturing’s Foster Plant. Tommy enjoyed restoring old cars and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Debra Pilgrim Barrett of the home; a daughter, Darlene Fisher of Easley; a stepdaughter, Laura Wood of Pickens; seven sisters, Ann Adkins, Linda Norton, Peggy Stewart, Jane Hamby, Kathy Leslie, Marie McCall and Sue Morgan; a stepsister, Lisa Whitmire; a half-brother, Timmy Barrett; four grandchildren, Charlene Juarez, Chris, Dustin and Alyssa Dear; two great-grandchildren, Diamond and Krizjian Barrett; his stepmother, Helen

JOHNNY F. HOLCOMBE

EASLEY — Johnny Foster Holcombe, 78, of Mary Ann Street, passed away on Friday, Aug. 23, 2019.

Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late Richard D. Holcombe and Eva Mae Forister Holcombe.

Johnny was retired from Creative Builders in Greenville after 21 years of dedicated service. He was also employed with R.T. Murrell and Bivens Construction erecting steel buildings, banks and apartment complexes. He was a lifetime member of Arial Baptist Church and a member of the Bible Fellowship Sunday School Class. He had a passion for and enjoyed repairing and remodeling tractors, especially John Deere.

Johnny was a man of great character and a humble Christian man who loved and was loved by all he met.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Lance Holcombe of the home; a daughter, Tammy Porter (Randell) of Simpsonville; stepdaughters, Evetta Madden of Mars Hill, N.C., Diane Brown of Simpsonville and Stephanie Maynard; seven grandchildren, Matt Holcombe (Stephanie), Jessica Burroughs (Steven), Butch Brown, Jessie Holcombe, Trisha Morris, Andrea Naassan and Damion Maynard; 13 great-grandchildren, Jordan Wise, Danielle, Iszebelle, Hannah and Zae Standifer, Jerred Holcombe, Maggie Burroughs, Jonathon Holcombe, Jamie-Rae Bryant, Macey Reese, Mackeira Morris, Harvey Huntley and Hydeia Brown; a sister, Joan Gilstrap (Marshall) of Easley; many nieces, nephews and their families that he adored and loved; and his beloved pets, Jasper and Simon.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his second wife, Beatrice Timms Holcombe; a son, Barry Holcombe; a grandson, B.J. Holcombe; sisters, Jean Ouzts and Frankie Brooks; and brothers, Jack Holcombe and J.T. Holcombe.

Funeral services were held on Aug. 27 at Arial Baptist Church, with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley.

EASLEY — Mrs. Betty Jean Dalton Carter, 84, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019.

RONNIE BURL RAMEY

EASLEY — Ronnie Burl Ramey, 71, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019.

Born in Pickens, he was the son of the late Cracker Jack and Nannie Mae Ramey, and husband of Linda Ramey.

Ronnie was a member of Rock Springs Baptist church and loved restoring old cars, working in his yard and spending time with his amazing grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Linda, of 51 years; two daughters, Kimberly Dickard (Russell) and Stephanie Owens (Ryan), both of Easley; and three grandchildren, McKayla Dickard, Grayson Owens and Garrison Owens.

In addition to his parents, Ronnie was predeceased by a brother and two sisters.

MARTHA ROMAINE BARRETT JOHNSON

SUNSET — Martha Romaine Barrett Johnson, 96, wife of the late Bob “Scatter” Johnson, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, at her home.

Born on Sept. 22, 1922, in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Aaron and Tiny Galloway Barrett. She was the business owner of Bob’s Place in Sunset. Romaine loved music, flowers, her friends and bikers. She was a great storyteller and never met a stranger.

SHAKYRA IMARI JAMIA YOUNG

PICKENS — Shakyra Imari Jamia Young, 11, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, in Greenville.

Born in Easley, she was the daughter of Latisha Wilson and Benjamin Young. Shakyra fully enjoyed life. She enjoyed dancing, singing, pranking, entertaining and bringing joy to all those around her. She was thoughtful and always concerned about others. Shakyra loved her sister, Shamari, and all her other siblings. She enjoyed her daily visits from Mr. Jim Little, who always made her laugh and smile. He was a very special part of her life. Shakyra lived out her remaining days through memorable experiences with Brian Forcier through the nonprofit organization skylastrong.org, which the family would like to give a special thanks. She took helicopter rides, went to Carowinds and Big Air, partying like a rock star “diva” complete with glitter.

Courier Obituaries 7-31-19

DAVID PRESTON ALEXANDER

PICKENS — David Preston Alexander, 75, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2019.

David was born Dec. 27, 1943, in Pickens, to the late David Edward and Ruth (Cooper) Alexander.

Preston loved people, as he never met a stranger. He will always be remembered for his kind heart, sense of humor, generosity and exceptional work ethic.

Preston and his father owned a grading/trucking company for many years. He drove a truck for C&S Wholesale Grocers until his retirement.

Preston is survived by his wife, Judy Alexander; one sister, Susan Grant; two sons, Daniel Christopher Alexander (Elizabeth) and Preston Scott Alexander (Sandra); one daughter, Presley Arlene Lewis (Kevin); six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was held at Dillard Funeral Home chapel on July 25, with the Rev. Tommy Hayes officiating. Entombment followed the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

The family welcomes visitors at the home of Chris Alexander.

STEPHEN MILLER “STEVE” ROBINSON

GREENVILLE — Mr. Stephen Miller “Steve” Robinson, 70, husband of 48 years to Dianne Pritchard Robinson, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 20, 2019.

Born in Spartanburg County, a son of the late Rev. Carlton Miller Robinson and the late Melissa Willis Robinson, Steve was a graduate of Greenville High School. He attended North Greenville College and Mars Hill College. He loved Greenville and was incredibly proud of “his” city.

For many years, Steve was the owner/operator of U-SAVE Car Lease in Easley. In addition, he had a successful career with Jefferson Pilot Insurance Company. He lived a life of service to his community and church through Meals on Wheels, Greenville Textile Heritage Society, outreach groups and coaching. Being the son of a minister, Steve truly understood the inner working of the church and often offered assistance in even the smallest tasks. Steve was a member of Easley First Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Stephanie Robinson Tollison and husband, Christopher E. Tollison, of Simpsonville; a son, Ryan Hamilton Robinson and wife, Wendi M. Robinson, of Simpsonville; a brother, David Rice Robinson and wife, Elaine, of Easley; and grandchildren, Garrett Ryan Tollison, Ellie Tollison, Sam Robinson, all of Simpsonville, Kory Griggs of Columbia and Adam Griggs of Travelers Rest.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Robinson was predeceased by a brother, Phillip Carlton Robinson; and a grandson, Carson Mitchell Tollison.

Steve was an avid sports fan, most particularly of Furman University football and basketball. He especially enjoyed beach music, 1950s nostalgia and The Statler Brothers. Steve was known for his incredible sense of humor. His joy was bringing a smile to the lips and a chuckle from within … and a belly laugh was even greater! He counted his friendships as one of his most treasured possessions. His wife, Dianne, was his biggest fan and truly the love of his life. His steadfast faith in God and his never-ending effort to leave all with a smile made us all better for having known him. Truly, Steve was a fine example of one of his favorite phrases: “ENJOY THE RIDE”!

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, at Easley First Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 2-3:45 p.m. Sunday at the church.

BOBBIE LEE MOODY HUGHES

PENDLETON — Bobbie Lee Moody Hughes, 85, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2019.

She was born on Oct. 31, 1933, in Greenville to the late Rev. Daniel W and Callie Stephens Moody.

Mrs. Hughes was a devoted Christian, and even during her sickness, she shared her love for the Lord with everyone she met. She was a devoted mother and wife, as well as being a business woman in her earlier years, owning and operating her own upholstery business. She also loved the outdoors, and her interests included camping, spending time at the beach, picnics, bluebird watching and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her two daughters, Tammy Hughes Lognion (Dwayne) of Pendleton and Anita Hughes Bratcher (Tommy) of Belton; one granddaughter, Shelly Bratcher Barrow of Belton; two sisters, Betty Haire of Easley and Ellen Harris of Easley; and two brothers, Gearld Moody of Easley and Donald Moody of Williamston.

She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Alfred Eugene Hughes; two brothers, Daniel W. Moody Jr. and Calvin W. Moody; and one sister, Shirley McKee.

Memorial services were held on July 12 in the funeral home chapel. Burial was held at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

EASLEY — Dorothy Vivian Holder Blalock, 82, of Oaklane Drive, wife of the late Jack “Frosty” Blalock, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2019.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Martin and Lucy Baines Holder.

JIMMY RAY MOORE

EASLEY — Mr. Jimmy Ray Moore, 62, husband of Robyn Hunter Moore, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 4, 2019.

Born in Bitburg, Germany, a son of the late Heyward Cleveland Moore and the late Etta May Howard Moore, Mr. Moore was retired from the Clemson University Police Department, where he was disabled in the line of duty. He was an active member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, where he belonged to the Redeemed Sunday school class.

Jimmy was an avid rock climber and loved being a member of the Easley Rescue Squad, serving on the Mountain Rescue Team and the Dive Team. He loved children and was proud to serve as chairman of the Friends of the Guardian ad Litem. Mr. Moore loved and adored his family, but his greatest love was for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The Lord blessed Jimmy and his family for many years, having allowed him to be the longest living heart transplant survivor. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
