EDGAR O. HOLDER

PICKENS — Edgar O. Holder, 92, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca.

He was the son of Ossie Crawford Holder and Christine Parsons Holder. After high school he went to work for Poinsett Lumber Company as a lumber inspector and dry kiln operator. Around 1950 while still working at the lumber mill he started working with his cousin Dwight Holder selling perpetual care cemetery property. In 1955 he resigned from Poinsett to concentrate on the cemetery business. He built a 40 year career in the cemetery business. During that time he served 20 years on the South Carolina Cemetery Board and was past president of the South Carolina Cemetery Association. He was a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple for several decades and rode his Tennessee Walking horse with the Hejaz Horse Patrol. He we past president of the Southeastern Shrine Horse Patrol Association.

In 1960 he organized Ace Sales and Consultants that combined cemetery operations with real estate investing

Jacks. He was born in Easley on April 1, 1999. He attended Pickens High School, where he was an Honor Student and member of the rising sophomore class.

He was involved in numerous activities at school, including Junior ROTC, Beta Club, and Blue Line Bluegrass.

He was a member of Pickens View Wesleyan Church where he was actively involved in the 512 Student Ministry. He enjoyed many outdoor activities and spending time with friends and family. He also spent his summers ministering to special needs children.

Survivors include his parents, his brother Dylan Matthew Jacks of Easley and Dylan’s fiancé Jessie Fickenworth. Also surviving are his Grandparents Patricia Hendricks (widow of the late P. Sherman Hendricks) of Easley, Robert and Virginia Wilson of Canon, Ga., and George and Louise Jacks of Piedmont. In addition are a number of loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial service was held Sunday, June 29 at 4 p.m. in Pickens View Wesleyan Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Baptist Easley Hospital Foundation for Pediatric TEAM Center or to the youth group of Pickens View Wesleyan Church.

Leigh Robinson

Liberty — Elizabeth Leatrice “Leigh” Lewis Robinson, 89, of 109 Venture Drive died Tuesday at Redeemer Health & Rehab in Pickens.

Born in Iva, she was the widow of Claude Edgar “Ed” Robinson, Jr. and a daughter of the late William Ralph and Lillian Howell Lewis. She was retired from Clemson University and most recently worked at Hardee’s in Liberty. She was a member of Ruhamah Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Cheryl Gilliam of Seneca; a son, Jimmy “Butch” Houston (Pat) of Clover; two sisters, Glenda Garrett of Seneca and Barbara Ivey of Utah; three granddaughters, Kim, Kelly and Fara; and five great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by a brother, Bill Lewis; and a grandson, Scotty Gilliam.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Robinson were held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Abbott Cemetery.

Charles Delozier

Easley — Charles Alvin Delozier, 87, husband of the late Frances Bernice Smith Delozier, died Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Fairmont, to the late Elmer and Evelyn Pitts Delozier, Charles was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He went on to work at Fiber Industries where he was a computer technician until his retirement. Charles loved sports, but his favorites were baseball and football. He never missed a game when his Atlanta Braves or University of South Carolina Gamecocks were playing.

He is survived by two sons, Dwayne Delozier (Teresa) and Thomas Delozier (Kathey); a daughter, Therese Goforth; three grandchildren, Michelle Alexandria Cooper, Christopher David Adams and Travis Lee Delozier; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Bud Delozier.

There are no funeral arrangements at this time.

Aileen Smith Bowen

Pickens — Aileen Smith Bowen, 83, of 814 Old Bethlehem School Road, Pickens died Thursday, June 26, 2014.

Aileen was born in Oconee County and was the daughter of the late Freeman Smith and Lucille Whitt. She was retired from Ryobi Company and a member of East Pickens Baptist Church. Aileen loved flowers and gardening and was an avid Clemson Tiger Fan. She will be fondly remembered for her sparkling blue eyes and fun loving personality.

Survivors include her son Tommy, daughter-in-law Jeannie and her beloved grandson, Cody and her precious dog “Snoopy”. Surviving, also are two brothers Ralph Smith of Townville and Wilton “Dickie” Smith of North Carolina.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Guy Bowen and three sisters and five brothers.

Graveside service was Saturday June 28 at 10 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens. The Rev. Jamie Duncan officiated the service.

Lois Inez Britton

Pickens — Lois Patterson Britton, 92, wife of the late Ansel Britton died on Thursday, June 26, 2014.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Clove Evatt and Tillman Patterson. Lois was retired from Sangamo Electric and was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church for over 60 years.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend whose love of the Lord showed in all she did.

Surviving are her children, Lucille Maltby, Juanita Stewart (Buddy), Carolyn Frady of Michigan, Judy Chandler (Terry), Jackie Alexander (David) of Liberty, Larry Britton, Donnie Britton (Cindy), Ernie Britton (Glennon) and Scott Britton (Nancy) all of Pickens; 12 grandchildren, Jamie Stewart, Shannon Gibson, Melissa Roper, Amanda Snyder, Jenna Eller, Cory Chapman, Robbie Frady, David Alexander, Jr., Adam Alexander, Eric Britton and Tiffany Cable; 22 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and two sisters, Velma Lesley of Conway and Ruby Guy of Spartanburg.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Darlene Britton, an infant girl, a grandchild, BJ Stewart and two great grandchildren, Christian Hunter Chapman and Megan Evatt. Lois had several half brothers and sisters.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, June 29 at 2 p.m. Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Frances Bernice Wilson

Pickens — Frances Bernice Wilson, age 80, wife of the late Harry N. Wilson, Jr. died Thursday June 26, 2014 at Manna Health and Rehab Pickens.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Pickens County and the daughter of the late Bessie Reeves Stansell and Doil Stansell. Mrs. Wilson was of the Baptist faith and loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include three sons; Harry N. Wilson III and wife Dee Dee of Powderville, Donnie Ray Wilson and wife Lisa of Pickens, Mark Allen Wilson of Easley, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Wilson was predeceased by her husband, parents and three brothers; Lloyd Stansell, B.C. Stansell and Ray Stansell.

Funeral Service was Saturday, June 28 at 2 p.m. at Greenville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. Entombment was in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Six Mile — Dionnah Michelle “Dee” Palmer Evans, 41, wife of Andrew Earl “Andy” Evans of Six Mile, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at her home.

Dee was born in Landstuhl, Germany, a daughter of Virgil Wirick and Phyllis Kaye Chance Palmer of Watkinsville, Ga. She was a homemaker and a member of Kings Grove Baptist Church.

This saddens me greatly. I thought I was so lucky because Bobby Haley, founder of Kentucky Missions, was planning a trip this summer, and I was in position to go with them.

“Nothing will change my mind,” I promised myself.

I had planned to pay for the trip with half of my tax return money. So I filled out my taxes and came up with a figure of $575 I should be getting back. The IRS even sent me a letter saying I might be eligible for more.

Then the next letter came from the IRS. It said that my tax return was used to pay back taxes that I did not know I owed. In addition to the $575, they wanted me to send around $9,000, which of course I do not have.

I went to the IRS office in Greenville, and they said I needed to fill out forms from

Liberty — Anthony Chiovitti, 55, of 220 McClanhan Road, died Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Flemington, N.J. he was a son of the late John D. Chiovitti and Irma Romano Chiovitti. He was a 1977 graduate of North Hunterdon Regional High School in Annandale, N.J. and later attended Johnson and Wales Culinary Institute.

Surviving are a sister, Mary Thomas of Oxford, N.J.; a brother, John Chiovitti of Asbury, N.J.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Cricket Hughes

Central — Martha Ann “Cricket” Hughes, 77, beloved wife of William Leander “Bill” Hughes died Monday, May 26, 2014 at her home.

Cricket was born in Six Mile, a daughter of the late Ben Tilman and Grace Barrett Hendricks. Cricket was the consummate military wife along with Bill during his time in the U. S. Air Force. They traveled all over Europe and the U. S. including Hawaii and Cricket was always helping plan parties and other functions for the officers’ wives club wherever they were stationed. She formerly worked for Edwards Junior High School as study hall supervisor. Later she worked with Bill in his service to the Oconee County Builders Association where she was in charge of hospitality.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Bill of the home her son, Brian Hughes (Ellen) of Atlanta, Ga. and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Caley Hughes of Six Mile. Also surviving are granddaughters, Gretchen Hughes and Lydia Hughes and a sister, Connie Elizabeth Alexander (Larry) of Six Mile.

In addition to her parents, Cricket was preceded in death by a son, Bruce W. Hughes.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens with the Rev. Ike Hughes officiating.

Norris — Mary Ellen Rhodes Anders, 84, of 409 Jule Merck Road, died peacefully Tuesday at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Pickens, she was the widow of W.O. “Bill” Anders and a daughter of the late J.B. Rhodes and the late Nora Whitlock Rhodes Kelly Herd. She was retired from Central Textiles and was a member of Calumet Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Faye Lyda(Mike) of Central; two sons, Joe Bill Anders (Peggy) and Douglas Anders, all of Central; six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by four brothers, DeWhitt, Martin, and Olin Rhodes, and Jack Kelly.

William “Bill” Beall

Easley — William Michael “Bill” Beall, 68, husband of Angie Rae Brockway-Drennan, died Thursday, May 29, 2014 at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville.

Born in Washington, D.C., to the late Jerome and Laura Vonraschlaub Beall, Bill was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He worked at Wal-Mart as an assistant manager until his retirement and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Shawn Beall of Virginia, and Daniel Drennan of Greenville; three daughters, Shannon Beaver of Idaho, Jessica Brockway of Mauldin, and Shelby Brockway of the home; a sister, Geraldine Nussear of Maryland; and six grandchildren.

Graveside services were 2 p.m. Monday June 2, at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson.

Easley — Teresa Ann Stewart, age 52, died Friday May 30, 2014 at Easley Baptist Hospital.

She was the daughter of Doris Ann Rogers Lesley of Pickens and the late Ralph Lee Bridges. Mrs. Stewart was born in Pickens County.

Survivors include her mother, one sister; Janet Wooten of Pickens, one half brother; Johnathan Lesley of Pickens.

Graveside service was Sunday, June 1 at 3 p.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

B.F. Jones

Liberty — Butler Frank “B.F.” Jones, 75, of 112 Ridge Court, died Thursday at his residence.

Born in Pickens, he was a son of the late Prue and Lois Ferguson Jones. He was retired from Alice Mfg. and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Connelly and Crystal Williamson both of Liberty; two sons, Frank Jones of Liberty and Chad Jones of Pickens; four sisters, Jean Godfrey of Easley, Mozell Lusk of Pickens, Rosie Patterson of Pickens and Doris Todd of Liberty; a brother, Cecil Jones of Easley; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Joel Jones; and a grandson, Brandon Connelly.

Keith Brown

Liberty — Keith Eugene Brown, 65, of Liberty, died Saturday, May 31, 2014 at his residence.

Born in Easley, he was the son of Joyce Lee McNeely Brown of Oviedo, Fla. and the late Walter A. Brown, Jr.  Keith served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp. and was a member of the Freedom Fellowship Church in Central.  Keith was a carpenter prior to becoming disabled.  He enjoyed auto mechanics and computers.  Keith loved the Lord, bible studies and feeding the needy.  He especially loved to sing his favorite song “King Jesus”.

Surviving in addition to his mother is his daughter, Wanda Sullivan and her husband William, two grandchildren, Zackary and Brian Sullivan of Liberty; three sisters, Cheryl Solomon, Gayle Rice and Vanessa Simons and husband Jeff all of Oviedo, Fla.;  nieces and nephews, Tammy, Mattheu, Bobby, Tanya, Jennifer, Zachary, Jeffrey, Deanna, Keith, Jarod, Kitty, Tiffany, Tim and Matthew; great nieces and nephews, Reanna, Daniel, Cody, Jacob, J.T., Mason, Camren, Linken, Landon, Charlotte and Lillian.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister Theresa Ann Brown White and his brother, Robinson T. Brown.

Graveside services for Mr. Brown were held Wednesday June 4 at 10 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley.  The Rev. Mike Johnson conducted the service.

The family will be receiving guests following the service at the home of his daughter, Wanda Sullivan, 120 Red Bug Road, Liberty, SC 29657.

Pickens — Mr. Bobby Glenn Gillespie, Sr., 74, husband of the late Shirley Jean Ragan Gillespie, died Friday, May 30, 2014 at the home of his daughter.

Born in Asheville, N.C., a son of the late Edgar Francis and Lillian Freeman Gillespie, Mr. Gillespie retired from JP Stevens and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three sons, Charles Edwin “Chuck” Gillespie (Lisa) of Easley, Derral Glenn Gillespie (Sheila) of Taylors, and Bobby Glenn Gillespie, Jr. (Scarlett) of Pickens; four daughters, Strita G. Pennyman (Dwayne) of Easley, Teresa Louise Feno (Randall) of Easley, Stephanie Kelley (Jimmy) of Pickens, and Christy George of Georgia; three brothers, Bill Gillespie (Pat), Gary Gillespie and Junior Gillespie; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Gillespie was predeceased by two sisters, Carolyn Waycaster and Joyce Chandler.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 3 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Harold M. Rowland

Central — Harold M. Rowland, 86, of Rowland Drive, Central, and husband of the late Annie Head Rowland, died at his home on Thursday, May 29, 2014.

Mr. Rowland was born in Pickens County a son of the late Miles and Lydia Gillespie Rowland.  He retired from Cannon Mills after 46 years service and was a member of Central Fire Baptized Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are four sons, David H. (Juanita) Rowland of Anderson, John E. (Carolyn) Rowland of Liberty, Cecil R. (Martha) Rowland, and Thomas G. (Susan) Rowland both of Central; one daughter, Ann Hamlin, of Seneca; eight
grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife he was predeceased by a son in law, Clint Hamlin, a grandson, Jason Rowland and three brothers, Chris, Gene, and Willis Rowland.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 31, at 4 p.m., in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home.

The family extends a special thanks to Dale Pilgrim for his care and friendship during our fathers illness.

Avanell Archie

Easley — Avanell Arnold Archie, 89, formerly of Walnut Hill Drive, wife of the late Robert Archie, died Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Patewood Hearth & Rehab.

Born in Pickens County, the daughter of the late Thomas and Essie Trotter Arnold, Mrs. Archie retired from the Elljean Plant of Alice manufacturing Company and was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church.

Surviving are five sons, Rayvon Duncan of Pacolet, James Duncan of Powdersville, Fred Duncan, Kenneth Duncan both of Pickens and Ivy Duncan of Easley; three daughters, Hazel Cope and Carolyn Knight, both of Easley and Nellie Owens of Pickens; a brother, Robert Otis Arnold of Williamston; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Archie was predeceased by a brother, William Thomas Arnold.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

“Brooksie” Jones

Clemson — Alma Brooks “Brooksie” Young Jones, 91, of Clemson and widow of Champ M. Jones, died Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Ninety Six, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Maxwell and Mattie Mae Purkerson Young. Booksie was a 1944 graduate of Lander College, a homemaker and also taught pre-school kindergarten at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church for many years. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Clemson for more than 71 years, where she worked with Mission Friends for more than 20 years and was known for her work with shut-ins and visiting nursing homes.

Surviving are three sons, Champ M. Jones, Jr. (Grace), of Clemmons, N.C., Henry B. Jones (Nancy) of Clemson and John B. Jones (Trina) of Greer; five grandchildren, Meredith G. Jones, Alexandria, Va., Champ M. Jones III, Brooklyn, N.Y., Henry B. Jones, Jr., Charleston, Tyler C. Jones, Atlanta, Ga. and Brooks A. Jones, Chicago, Ill.; one great-grandson, Grayson Richard Jones, of Atlanta, Ga.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by four brothers, Benjamin M. Young, Jr., John C. Young, James P. Young and Roy N. Young.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday at Woodland Cemetery on the campus of Clemson University.

Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday following the graveside service at First Baptist Church, Clemson with the Rev. Dr. Rusty Brock officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

Liberty — Geneva Chitwood Cook, 77, of 1001 Robinson Bridge Road, died peacefully Monday at her residence.

Born in Hartwell, Ga., she was the widow of Ernest Cook and a daughter of the late Alfred M. and Ella Mae Bailey Chitwood. She was retired from Alice Mfg. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and she enjoyed baking in her free time.

Surviving is a brother, James Walker Chitwood of Anderson: a niece, Karen Casey of Anderson; along with a great host of friends and church family.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Cook will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairview Baptist Church. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1 until 2 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Entombment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Born in Greenville County, a daughter of the late Fred and Lola Coyle.

Surviving are her children, Daniel Matthews, Charlotte Matthews Trotter, Larosa Matthews Morrison, Frank Matthews, and Leslie Matthews Anderson.

Preceded in death by a son, Joseph Mack Matthews; a granddaughter, Amanda Rose Matthews; a grandson, Joseph Shane Matthews; a brother and two sisters.

Easley — Carlyle Jim Wash Sutherland, 72, of 104 Abigail Lane, died Monday, May 19, 2014 at Laurel Bay Health Care.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Clyde Cleveland and Annie Mae Rackley Sutherland, Mr. Sutherland retired from Gower Metal Enterprises in Greenville and was a member of Faith Independent Baptist Church in Cleveland.

Surviving are his wife, Juanita Shipman Sutherland of the home; a daughter, Judy Childs (Danny) of Easley; two sisters, Edna Mae King (Bill) and Edith Shipman (Leon), both of  Easley; two grandsons, Jason Childs and Michael Childs (Joni), and two great-granddaughters, Sadie Grace Childs and Scarlett

Bessie Patterson Gilstrap

Easley — Bessie Patterson Gilstrap, age 94, died Tuesday May 13, 2014.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of Rice’s Creek Baptist Church, Liberty.

Surviving include one daughter; Nancy Fant and husband Frank of Easley, one son; Kenneth Gilstrap and wife Gail of Liberty, six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by two sons; Stan and Steve Gilstrap and one daughter; Toni Evans.

Nelson Cureton

Easley — Nelson Kennick Cureton, 85, wife of the late James Henry Cureton, Jr., died Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

Born in Lebanon, Ill., Mrs. Cureton was a daughter of the late Mark H. and Nelson Scott Kennick. She was a homemaker and past vice president of Jaycettes in Chester as well as a charter member of the Chester Jaycettes. She was a member of Easley First Baptist Church, where she sang alto in the choir faithfully, during her active membership.

Surviving are two sons, James Henry “Hal” Cureton III (Rose) of Anderson, Mark Scott Cureton of Greenville; two daughters, Teresa C. Lusk (Michael) and Michelle C. Mauldin (Danny) all of Easley; seven grandchildren, Eric Nelson Cureton, Jennifer Mauldin Mitchell, Stacey Mauldin Gravely, Bradley William Mauldin, Amber Lusk Bivens, Kiley Hope Lusk, and Ryan Michael Lusk; and eight great-grandchildren with one on the way.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Cureton was predeceased by two brothers and one sister. Memorial services were 3 p.m. Friday, May 2 in the sanctuary of Easley First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. John Adams officiating. Memorials may be made to Pickens County Meals on Wheels, P.O.
