Obituaries for the week of February 29

Ann Holder
Pickens — Cynthia “Ann” Bolding Holder, 50, of 403 Garvin Street, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012.
Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of Margaret Norris Bolding of Pickens and the late Charles Bolding. Ann was a homemaker and member of Bethany Church of God.
Surviving is her husband, George H. Holder of the home; a daughter, April Dodgens (Stephen) of Pickens; a son, Matt Holder (Misty) of Pickens; three grandchildren, Madison, Maggie-Grace, and Jonathan Holder; and a brother, Stanley Bolding.
In addition to her father, she was predeceased by a brother, Sammy Bolding.
A service to celebrate Ann’s life will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home with burial to follow in Cedar Hill Holiness Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

MILDRED HUDSON
GREENWOOD — Mildred Brezeale Hudson, 86, 110 Sylvan Road, widow of J. Floyd Hudson, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2012 peacefully at her home.
Born in Pickens, she was a daughter of the late Riley Odell and Neta Porter Brezeale. She was retired from Kemet Electronics and was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Bible Class and The Friendship Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Susan Jacks of Toccoa, Ga. and Jane Crittendon of the home; a son, Donald Hudson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Kathryn Wardlaw of Pendleton and Judy McKinley of Central; four grandchildren, Stephanie Turner (Mickey) of Toccoa, Michael Crittendon (Susie) of Greenwood, Hal Jacks and Justin Jacks, both of Toccoa; granddaughter-in-law, Sherry Crittendon; 10 great grandchildren, Brittni, Trevor and Gavin Crittendon of Pelzer, Samantha Crittendon of Greenwood, Wesley Stivers of Foxworth, Miss., Lanny, Matthew and Donavin Turner of Toccoa, Eric Whittington of Greenwood and Alyssa Jacks of Martinez, Ga. and her loving caregiver, Yvonne Spearman of the home.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Barry Hudson; a grandson, Chip Crittendon; a sister, Lillian Fender and two brothers, Charles Brezeale and Van Brezeale.
Services were at 11 a.m. Monday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. George Thomas officiating. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum, Pickens.
Pallbearers were Michael Crittendon, Justin Jacks, Trevor Crittendon, Brian Turnbloom, Joey Thompson and Bill Starnes.
Honorary escort were members of the Ladies Bible Class of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and nurses of HospiceCare of the Piedmont.

Mayor Larry William
Abernathy
Clemson — The Honorable Mayor Larry William Abernathy, 64, of 1026 Keystone Lane died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Shelby, N.C., he was a son of the late Paul Hicks and Madge Aline Mitcham Abernathy.  Mayor Abernathy served for a total of 32 years in city government for the City of Clemson having served for four years on council prior to being elected Mayor in 1984.  During his tenure as mayor, both the City of Clemson and Clemson University have had significant growth and yet through his leadership, the city has maintained it’s village quality as well as forged cooperation with Clemson University to help enrich the lives of both citizens and students alike.  He was a 1969 graduate of Clemson University where he also earned his Master’s Degree. He also served as Director of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission for both Oconee and Anderson Counties as well as being Visiting Professor of Counselor Education and Clinical/Mental Health in the College of Health Education and Human Development at Clemson University.  He was a member of University Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Davis Abernathy of the home; daughter, Dana Simpson and husband, Tim of Clemson; son, Ben Abernathy and wife, Nicky of Atlanta, Ga.; and grandchildren, Blake Simpson, Tyler Simpson, Chase Abernathy and Cody Abernathy.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Danny Abernathy.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m., Thursday at First Baptist Church of Clemson.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

SSgt. Lester L. Haynes, (USMC Ret)
Pickens — SSgt. Lester Luther Haynes, (USMC Retired), 71, husband of Betty Lewis Haynes of Pickens, died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012 in Pickens.
SSgt. Haynes was born in Oconee County a son of the late Eva Haynes Hendricks. He was retired from the U. S. Marine Corps following two tours in Viet Nam and later retired from Jennings Dill, Inc. He attended Pickens Independent Baptist Church and was a member of the American Legion Post #507.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Lewis Haynes of the home, sons James Haynes and Joe Hendricks both of Pickens, daughters Teresa Peace of Dacusville, Tina Entrekin of Six Mile, and Tracy Mann of Pickens, 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters Dorothy Cowan of Easley and Elizabeth Justice of Westminster.
SSgt. Haynes was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Haynes, his mother Eva Haynes Hendricks and first wife Patricia Haynes, and a sister, Carol Page.
Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial with full military honors followed in the Veteran’s Garden of Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Edna Barton
Sunset — Edna Lucille Winchester Barton, 78, widow of Winfred “Buddy” Barton, died Jan. 25, 2012.
Born Jan. 25, 1934 in Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late Homer E. and Olive Mae Alexander Winchester. She retired after 28 years with the U.S. Postal Service, where she served as Postmaster for the Sunset Post Office. Mrs. Barton was a member of Stamp Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Theresa Fendley; one son, Gary Barton (Wendy); two brothers, James C. Winchester, Harold Winchester; two sisters, Ruth Stewart, Lillie Batson; four grandchildren, and four great grand-children, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Barton was predeceased by one son, Allen Barton, three brothers, three sisters, and one grandson.
A funeral service was held 3 p.m. Friday at Holly Springs Baptist church. Burial followed in Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jimmy Lee Gillespie
Easley — Jimmy Lee Gillespie, 75, of 103 Arlington Avenue, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011.
Born in Easley, he was the son of the late Q-Ball and Ruby Merck Gillespie.
Jimmy was the owner of G & R Mechanical, retiring after 25 years of service.
He was a member of Elljean Baptist Church.
Surviving are his four children, Jeana Houser; Robby (Georgia) Gillespie; Bryan (Dawn) Gillespie and Bo (Lisa) Gillespie; one brother, Dan Gillespie; one sister, Martha Jane Todd; nine grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his two brothers, Johnny Gillespie and Ben Gillespie and his two sisters, Ann “Kitten” Hawkins and Betty Sprouse.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 27 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Ralph Warren Chapman
Pickens — Ralph Warren Chapman, 67, of Pickens, died Thursday, April 7, 2011. Loving husband of Dorrene (Waldron) Chapman.
Born in Stoneham, Mass., was the son of the late Ralph B. and Dorothy M. (Cleveland) Chapman. Business owner in Pickens since 1992 – Domestic Fence Co., Business owner for 30 plus years. He was an Honorary Member of the Sheriffs’ Association. He was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to his wife of 34 years he is survived by two daughters, Cassandra Garcia and husband Mario and grandchildren, Cheyanne and Dakota Waldron of Cateechee; and Tiffiny L. Chapman and friend Billy Gillespie of Stateville, N.C.; two sons, Ralph C. Chapman of Pickens and Aaron C. Chapman and fiancé Christina Hawkins and her daughters, Allysa and Kaitlynn Fricks of Pickens; a sister, Viola (Cleveland) Chapman and husband Joe of Cape Coral, Fla.; a brother, David A. Chapman and wife Kristen of Louden, N.H. and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins; three aunts, Viola (Chapman) Solis and husband Truman of Ariz., Martha (Chapman) Payton and husband Dick of Mo. and Lois Chapman of Kan.; one uncle, Harold Cleveland II, Fla.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by one daughter, Dorothea A. Chapman and one grandson, Joel E. Waldron.

Preston T. Rackley
Pickens – Preston Thomas Rackley, 60, of 289 Juniper Lane, died Monday May 9, 2011 at his home.
Preston was born in Pickens County, a son of the late Homer and Lucille Hawkins Rackley. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Viet Nam War and was formerly an electrician while living in Savannah, Ga.
Surviving is his brother Marvin E. Rackley and his wife Lisa of Pelzer and his sister Nancy Crymes of Cowpens.
Graveside services were conducted 11 a.m. Friday at the M. J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson.

Donna S. Cassell
Easley — Donna S. Cassell, 63, wife of Joe Cassell for 44 loving years, died after a long battle with cancer on May 4, 2011.
Born in Startex, she was the daughter of the late Odell and Irene Johnson. Donna was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Piedmont and was retired from Liberty Elementary as Food Service Manager. Donna will be so missed. She was such a loving, caring and Christian wife and mother. Mom, we will always have you in our hearts but we know you are our “ANGEL” now and will watch over us all.
She is survived by her husband and four wonderful, loving children; daughters, Cheryl Holliday (Joe); Christy May (Brian); Melinda Atkins (James) and son Billy Cassell (Monica). Donna was also blessed with two beautiful granddaughters Courtney and Brooke Holliday and five wonderful grandsons, Brandon Cassell; Justice and Avery Atkins; and Cody and Cameron Hutto. She is also survived by one sister and seven brothers all of Easley.
Mrs. Cassell was predeceased by one grandson Weston Blake Cassell and a sister-in-law Mary Jane Hester.
Preachers Leon Porter and Jack Connelly conducted funeral services Friday, May 6 at 3 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Addie C. Harris
Greenville — Addie Curry Harris, 75, of 216 W. Carolina Avenue died Wednesday at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
Born in Tupelo, Miss., she was the wife of Harvey Glen Harris and a daughter of the late George A. and Effie Simpson Curry. She was a retired truck driver and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Timothy Dale Whitten and his wife Dorothy of Easley and William Anthony Whitten of Greenville; two sisters, Eddie “Tink” Wallis of Pontotoc, Miss. and Louise Creely of Tupelo, Miss.; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by eight sisters; and two brothers.
Graveside services for Mrs. Harris were held Friday at 11 a.m. at Graceland East Cemetery.

Charles W. Quarles, Sr.
Pickens — Charles William Quarles, Sr., 81, husband of Frances Pettit Quarles, died Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Cottingham Hospice House.
Born in Oconee County, he was the son of the late Rufus W. and Ollie Mae Heaton Quarles. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during the Korean War.
Charlie retired from Winn Dixie Grocery Stores with 40 years of service. He was a member of East Pickens Baptist Church and served as CIA; Deacon and Sunday School Secretary for 50 years.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by two children, Lisa Quarles Pearmon and her husband Terry, of Easley; and Charles W. Quarles, Jr., and his wife Angela, of Buford, Ga.; his sister, Carolyn Quarles; brothers, Joe Dee, Horace, Morace and Harold Quarles; and two grandchildren, Brandon and McKenzie Quarles.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 7 at 2 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Oconee Memorial Park, with Military Honors.

Pickens — Gregory Allen “Sko-Bro” Durham, 54, of 202 N. Catherine Street, died Thursday, May 5, 2011.
Born in Pickens County, he was the son of Marlene Clayborn Durham of the home and the late Doyle G. Durham. Gregory was a member of Rice’s Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother, is a sister, Emily D. Chamness (Delbert) of Easley; a brother, James A. Durham (Linda) of Pickens; and several nieces and nephews.

Clinton Lamance
Six Mile — Clinton Leroy Lamance, 86, of 141 Holliday Road, died Saturday May 7, 2011.
Born in Brevard, N.C., he was the son of the late Roy Lee and Oliven Galloway Lamance.He was a veteran of the Merchant Marines, serving during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Genoble Stewart Lamance; daughter, Diane Kiger; son, Robert Lamance; two grandsons, Logan and Mason Lamance and son-in-law, Michael Kiger.

Vineta G. Mull
Easley — Vineta Gantt Mull, 103, formerly of the Glenwood Community, wife of the late A.E. “Gus” Mull, died Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Majesty Health and Rehab.
Born in Pickens County, the daughter of the late William Edward and Lillie Craig Gantt, Mrs. Mull was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Easley for over 60 years.
Surviving are two sons, George D. Mull (Carol) of Honea Path and Allen Mull (Joan) of Jonesville; a sister, Lillian Corley of Greenwood; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Mull was predeceased by a son, James E. Mull, a daughter, Mary Ellen Mull, three brothers, Horace Gantt, Paul Gantt and Charles Gantt, and by two sisters, Virginia Wilson and Louise Williams.
Funeral services were in 3:30 p.m. Saturday the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Westview Cemetery.

Florence Turner Loftis
Easley — Mrs. Florence Turner Loftis, 84, of 308 Powell Street, wife of the late William Perry Loftis, died Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late O’Dell and Nettie Hayes Turner, Mrs. Loftis was a homemaker, a member of Glenwood Baptist Church, a member of the Chapter 54 Woodruff Order of Eastern Star and a wife of a State Manager of Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society for 35 years.
Surviving are three sons, Ray Loftis (Cathy) and Artie Loftis (Marian) , all of New York and Dennis Loftis (Gina) of Easley; one sister, Helen Hammond of Greenville; six grandchildren, Vanessa, Josh, Luke, Casie, Kym and Selena; and two great-grandsons, Travis and Bryar. Florence was a loving mother that will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, May 12 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial will follow in Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley, SC 29642.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.
The family is at the residence.

Julia Rhodes
Liberty — Julia Rackley Rhodes, 80, of 407 Old Norris Road, widow of William Martin Rhodes, Sr., died Sunday, May 8, 2011 surrounded by her loving family at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Born in Oconee County she was a daughter of the late Peter and Dora Moore Rackley. She enjoyed doing puzzles and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are two daughters, and sons in law, Shirley and Dale Holder, and Sarah and Harold Morrison all of Liberty; two sons, and daughters in law, Stanley and Linda Rhodes of Liberty, and Buster and Amy Rhodes of Pickens; a sister, Dorothy Simmons of Liberty; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Rachel Ann Rhodes, three brothers, and a sister.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Rhodes will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Celia Bryson Gettys
Easley — Celia Bryson Gettys, 80, of Easley, wife of the late Richard Henry Gettys, died Monday, April 25, 2011.
Born and reared in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Basford Belew Bryson and Ouida Scott Bryson. Following graduation from Spartanburg High School and Winthrop College, she began her teaching career in Cheraw.  After she was married, she taught in Beaufort, Dumfries, Va., and Spartanburg.  In 1962 she began a 26 year teaching career with the School District of Pickens County, which included positions at Easley High School and Easley Junior High School (now Gettys Middle School).  Mrs. Gettys served on the South Carolina State Board of Education from 1992 to 1995, and was elected chairman in 1995.  She was the first female to hold this position. She was a member of Easley Presbyterian Church.  Mrs. Gettys was involved in many organizations including The Blue Chip Ladies investment club, The Better Homes Club, ‘The Book Club’ and multiple bridge clubs.
Mrs. Gettys is survived by her sons Dr. Richard Henry Gettys, Jr. (Sherry Anne), Roddey Bryson Gettys (Jeanne), Robert Lesslie Gettys (Lee), all of Greenville and grandchildren Charlotte Gettys Meade, Meredith Gettys, Jack Gettys, Hank Gettys, Julian Gettys, Bobby Gettys, and Caroline Gettys.  She is also survived by siblings Ward S. Bryson, Mary Bryson Wilson and Basford B. Bryson and a stepbrother Charles F. West.
She was predeceased by a granddaughter Anne Scott Gettys, stepmothers Emma Bryson and Julia Bryson and a step-sister Elizabeth Wilson.
Memorial services were held on Thursday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m. at Easley Presbyterian Church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Easley Presbyterian Church, 200 S. First Street, Easley, SC 29640, GBS/CIDP (Guillain-Barre Research and Support) Foundation International, The Holly Building 104 1/2 Forrest Ave., Narberth, PA  19072, or the charity of one’s choice.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the physicians and staff at North Greenville Hospital for the loving care they provided Mrs. Gettys during her extended illness.
