Obituaries for week of April 13

Gentis P. Whitmire
Six Mile — Mrs. Gentis Pilgrim Whitmire, 96, of 231 Lusk Road, wife of the late Col. Asa Palmer Whitmire, died Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at Cannon Memorial Hospital.
Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Arthur and Elizabeth Bolding Pilgrim, Mrs. Whitmire was a homemaker and a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. Gentis was an avid bowler and had a love for gardening.
Surviving are a daughter, Doris Carl and her husband Leland of Magnolia, Texas; a sister, Beulah Chappell of Pickens; four grandchildren, Leland and Brian Carl and Jeffrey and Keri Whitmire; and four great-grandchildren, Camden and Kenzie Carl and Asa and Jaxson Whitmire.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Whitmire was predeceased by a son, Gary Palmer Whitmire; four brothers, Coy, Hoyt, Calvin and Carl Pilgrim; and three sisters, Lena Murphree, Dessie Dodson and Olive Riggins.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Mountain View Baptist Church, Six Mile, with the Rev. Rick Hayes officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Ted B. Tallman
Six Mile — Theodore Burt “Ted” Tallman, 67, of 150 Yvonne Drive died Thursday, March 31, 2011.
Born Oct. 18, 1943 in Plattsburgh, N.Y., he was the son of the late Ernest and Evelyn Stone Tallman. Mr. Tallman was retired from Mac Steel in Greenville. He was a U.S. Marine veteran and attended Winding Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving is his wife, Shelby Revis Tallman, of the home, six sons, Michael, Dennis Richie, Edwin, Ron, and Ted Tallman; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Derosa of New York.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Ernest Arnold Tallman.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, April 2 at 4 p.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens

George C. Jones
Clemson — George Carlisle Jones, 100, husband of Sadie A. Jones, died at his home Monday, March 21.
A native of Walhalla, Mr. Jones was the son of the late George L. and Mary Corbin Jones.  After graduation from Clemson University in 1932, Mr. Jones was employed by Walter Guest Construction Firm of Anderson.  He later co-founded Industrial Builders, a commercial construction company, also of Anderson.  In 1960, after selling his interest in Industrial Builders, he was employed by Clemson University in the Physical Plant Division where he remained until his retirement in 1976.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Jones is survived by his son Les Jones (Jane) of Seneca, daughter Lynne Griffin (Randy) of Six Mile, grandchildren Carlisle Jones, Blake Jones, Amy Sawyer, Kelly Crawford and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his two brothers; Alvin S. Jones and L. Frank Jones.
Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 24 in the Chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central with the Rev. Dr. Rusty Brock officiating.  Burial followed in Westview Cemetery, Walhalla.

James W. Adams
Pickens — James W. Adams, 77, husband of Geneve “Jean” Welborn Adams died Monday, March 14, 2011 at his home.
Mr. Adams was born in Pickens County, a son of the late John Talley and Vera Kelley Adams. He was retired from Kent Manufacturing Company in Pickens and was formerly employed with Libco in Liberty. He was a member of Martin Grove Wesleyan Church and was formerly a member of the Pickens Rescue Squad.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jean Adams of the home, son Ray Adams (Faye) of Pickens, a brother Kenneth Adams (Barbara) of Six Mile and a sister Frances Aiken of Anderson. Also surviving are six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Adams was preceded in death by a son, Danny Adams, four brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17 in the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens with the Rev. Harold Nicholson officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Jimmy Lum Dancy
Glendale Springs, N.C. — Jimmy Lum Dancy age 71, of Glendale Springs, N.C. died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, N.C.
Mr. Dancy was born Dec. 17, 1939 in Ashe County, N.C. to Dennis and Johnsie Miller Dancy. Mr. Dancy attended Glendale Springs Presbyterian Church where he was very active. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. After retiring from J. R. Vannoy & Sons Construction he remained very active.
Mr. Dancy is survived by his wife Juanita O’Shields Dancy, two sons both of Charlotte, N.C., his Mother, two sisters, one brother, five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Dancy was preceded in death by his father.

Joe A. Durham
Liberty — Joe Alfred Durham, 66, of 315 Patterson Road, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital.
Born in Six Mile he was a son of the late Hermit I. Durham, Sr. and Ettie Galloway Durham.
He was a retired independent truck driver and was a member of Roanoke Baptist Church and the Adult Auditorium Sunday School Class. He was an avid race fan, and loved to build dirt racing cars.
Surviving are his wife, Marjorie Dickson Durham of the home; two daughters and sons in law, Tracey and Phillip Batson and Karen and Johnny Garrett, Sr. all of Greenville; two sons, Randall Durham of the home, and Richard Watson and his wife Rhonda of the Townville; two sisters, Mary Dillard of Easley and Romaine Chappell of Columbia; a brother, Doc Durham and his wife Linda of Pickens; six grandsons, Brian S. Watson and his wife Amy of Union Point, Ga., Johnny Garrett, Jr. and his wife Kim of Berea, Shane Garrett and his wife Kendall of Berea, Nathan and Dylan Watson both of Townville, and Joey Batson of Greenville; nine great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, and four brothers.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Durham were 1 p.m. Friday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Roanoke Baptist Church Cemetery.

Easley — Barbara Trotter Godshall, 68, of Easley, died March 1, 2011 after a long struggle with cancer.
Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Elbert and Eula Jones Trotter. Barbara was a retired beautician and a member of Griffin Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Michael V. Godshall; her brothers and sister, Bill Trotter; Sybil Pilgrim; John Trotter and Calvin Trotter; and her niece and nephews, Sherry Burrell; Philip Trotter and Michael Trotter.
Graveside services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Rickey Dale Martin
Easley — Mr. Rickey Dale Martin, 52, died Monday, March 1, 2011 in North Augusta.
Born in Oconee County, a son of Charlene Stephens Hatfield and the late Houston Martin, Mr. Martin was employed with Brooks Painting.
Surviving in addition to his mother, are his wife, Carolyn Cantrell Martin of Easley; two daughters, Brandy Martin Kilgen and Nikki Martin, both of Easley; three brothers, Tony and Randy Martin, both of Liberty and Barry Martin of Central; one sister, Dana Martin of Greenville; three grandchildren and a special friend Sandra Moore of Central.
In addition to his father, Mr. Martin was predeceased by a daughter, Carrie Martin.
Graveside services were 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5 in Abbott Cemetery, Liberty.

Grady C. Green
Easley — Grady Charles Green, 53, of Easley, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011.
Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Freda Alexander Green. Mr. Green was employed with Michelin (MARC) for 33 years. He was a member of Blue Ridge View Baptist Church.
Surviving are his children, Alicia (Ryan) Kidd, of Kingsland, Ga.; and Brandon Green, of Easley; and a sister, Sharon B. Green of Simpsonville.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Dove Henry Pate, Sr.
Clemson — Dove Henry (DH) Pate died at home Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011 with his wife Marian and son Henry at his side.
Born to Dr. Charles and Penelope Pate on Jan. 20, 1919, DH grew up in Scranton, and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1939.  After graduation DH moved to Charleston, where he worked at Cameron and Barkley until he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. When he received orders for the Pacific Theater, his fiance Marian met him in Wyoming, and they married 10 days before he left for Pearl Harbor.  After the war DH returned to Charleston, living there until his move to Clemson, in 2006. He was the secretary/treasurer of Gas Engine and Electric Company from 1945 until 1983. In the Air Force Reserve for more than 30 years, he retired as a colonel. He was a member of Strict Observance Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason.  After retirement he had an active volunteer life, serving as Sunday School teacher and deacon at Ashley River Baptist Church in Charleston, helping with Meals on Wheels, and guiding tours at Middleton Plantation and Charleston’s historic homes.
He is survived by his wife Marian of more than 68 years; his sons, Henry (Nancy) and Charles (Nell); two grandchildren, David Pate (Tanisha) and Dana Pate Pickens (Charles); and five great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by his parents, three brothers, and a sister. 
Funeral services were held at Clemson First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, with interment at the family Cemetery in Scranton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the building fund at Clemson First Baptist Church.
The family gives special thanks to Tee Grate who lovingly cared for DH in his last two months as well as to Hospice of the Foothills.

Myrtle B. Freeman

Pickens-Myrtle Brewer Freeman, 93, formerly of Belle Shoals Road, wife of the late B.F. Freeman, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011.
Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Josephus and Ada Mae Flemming Brewer. Mrs. Freeman was retired from Alice Manufacturing, Arial Plant, and was a member of Secona Baptist Church.
Surviving is a sister, Elizabeth Fortner of Easley.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Annette Green, and Mary Brewer; and two brothers, Jack Brewer and Willard Brewer.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Earle E. Morris Jr.

LEXINGTON — Mr. Earle E. Morris, Jr., 82, was born July 14, 1928, in Pickens and died on Friday, Feb. 11, 2011.
He was the son of Earle E. Morris, Sr. and Bernice Carey Morris. Mr. Morris was educated in the Pickens Public Schools. Mr. Morris was a member of Rose Hill Presbyterian Church, Columbia, Elder and Clerk of Session, former Deacon; and Trustee, Synod of South Carolina; Trustee and Former Chairman, Board of Insurance, Annuities and Relief, Presbyterian Church in America. Mr. Morris was elected at age 21 as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1951 to 1955. He was elected to the South Carolina Senate from 1955 to 1971 and Former Chairman of the Joint Committee on Mental Health and Mental Retardation from 1959 to 1970. Mr. Morris was elected as Lieutenant Governor on Nov. 3, 1970 for a four year term, 1971 to 1975 and was a Member, South Carolina Mental Health Commission from 1975 to 1976. Mr. Morris was elected Comptroller General, June 16, 1976 and re-elected, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994. He retired as South Carolina Comptroller General in 1999. Zona Hallums Ladd
Easley — Mrs. Zona Hallums Ladd, 94, formerly of 201 West B Avenue, wife of the late R.L. Ladd, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011 at Majesty Health and Rehabilitation, Easley.
Born in Anderson County, a daughter of the late Wesley and Dora Collins Hallums, Mrs. Ladd worked for the Grantham family for 40 years prior to which she worked for the family of L.R. Poole.  She is known by many people for keeping children at the Easley Bowling Alley.  She was a lifelong member of Easley Union Baptist Church where she was a former deaconess, usher and member of the Missionary Auxillary.  Mrs. Ladd was also a member of the White Rose Garden Club.
Surviving are a son, Terry Smith (Cynthia) of Easley; step-son, Reginald Ladd (Elenor) of Atlanta; a son raised in the home, Andrew Ladd (Wendy) of Charlotte; a sister, Pearlie Gamble of Greenville; special daughter, Dottie Grantham of Easley; her God-daughter, Betty Jo Gambrell of Easley; 18 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Ladd was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Johnson; and by two brothers and seven sisters.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Friday at Easley Union Baptist Church with the Rev. C.L. Cruell officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Haskell Charles Galbreath

Pickens — Haskell Charles “Hank” Galbreath, 78, of 174 Porter Road died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011 at his residence.
Born in Easley, he was the husband of Geraldine Rich Galbreath of the home, and a son of the late Edgar Bruce and Grace Ellenburg Galbreath. Hank was a 1950 graduate of Easley High School and afterwards he joined the U.S. Marine Corp and served our country during the Korean War. He was the owner of Western Auto in Pickens which later became known as Haskell Corp. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Debbie Fowler of Liberty and Suzanne Smith of Six Mile; three sons Mike Galbreath of Titusville, Fla., Brian Galbreath of Toccoa, Ga. and Bruce Galbreath of Easley; a stepson, Jerry Clark of Liberty; two sisters, Barbara Ellis of Easley and Shelby Hawkins of Greenville; 10 Grandchildren, Misty Kearney, Jason Fowler, Katie Estes, Shawn, Jennifer, Katelyn, Kim and Kaley Galbreath, and Brittany and Jacob Smith; great grandchildren, Zachary Sanders, Andre and Haley Bergeron, Ashton Kearney, Jayden Parker and Nolan Galbreath.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a daughter, Rhonda Galbreath; a stepdaughter Jan Rathgeb; a son Joseph Mark Galbreath; two brothers, Chris and Jack Galbreath; and a great grandchild, Haiden Parker.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Galbreath were held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.

Lee C. Fowler

Liberty — Lee C. Fowler, 90, of Liberty, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011 at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Liberty he was a son of the late Frank and Mattie Hinton Fowler. He retired from the U. S. Air Force and had previously served in the U.S. Army as well. He served his country during World War II and later the Korean War. After his military service he later retired from Woodside Mill and attended Smith Chapel Wesleyan Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Gilstrap Fowler of the home; two sons and daughters in law, Stanley and Yvonne Fowler, and Randall and Gloria Fowler all of Liberty; a brother, Earl Fowler of Liberty; five grandchildren, Stacey Kitchens, Stephanie Cope, Dustin Fowler, Amanda Fowler, and Lauren Fowler; two great grandchildren, Kristen and Zane Kitchens.
Graveside services with full military honors for Mr. Fowler were 4 p.m. Saturday at Westview Cemetery, Liberty.

Shirley D. Childress
Easley — Shirley Ann Dalton Childress, 72, of 125 May Street, wife of the late James Roy Childress, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 at her home.
Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Richard Earl Dalton and Beatrice Holbrooks Dalton. Mrs. Childress was formerly employed with Stayon and was a member of Cedar Rock Baptist Church.
Surviving is her son, Steve Childress (Martha) of Easley; two grandchildren, Bradley and Jennifer; two great grandchildren, Devon and Joey; six sisters, Glenda Finley, Linda Kennemore, Susie Durham, Judy Gillespie and Mary Lesley all of Easley and Bobbie Fox of Greenville; two brothers, Wayne Dalton and Ricky Dalton of Easley; and her companion and longtime friend, B.F. Evatt.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two children, James Bradley Childress and Kathy Marie Childress, two sisters, Ann Black and Ellen Seigle, and a brother, Jimmy Dalton.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Cedar Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.

Melvin Eugene Heaton, Sr.

Pickens — Mr. Melvin Eugene Heaton, Sr. 74, husband of Mrs. Martha Joan Cheek Heaton, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011 at his home.
Born in Oconee County, a son of the late Mack and Pearl Calhoun Heaton, Mr. Heaton retired from G.E., served in the U.S. Navy, and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the home, are two sons, James Chuck Heaton and Melvin Eugene Heaton, Jr. (Deanna), all of Easley; one daughter, Debbie Pelt (Billy) of Easley; one brother, Curtis Heaton of Seneca; one sister, Linda Crane of Westminister; and seven grandchildren, Mitzi Burgess, Shane Heaton, Brandon Heaton, Stephanie Heaton, Meagan Heaton, Austin Cordell, and Brady Cordell.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Heaton was predeceased by two brothers, Fred and Alvin Heaton.

Zane Chastain
Liberty — Betty Zane Hunter Chastain, 80, of 33 N. Commerce Street, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011 at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Born in Liberty, she was the widow of George Vernon Chastain and a daughter of the late Ralph and Betty Childs Hunter. Zane was a member of First Baptist Church, Liberty. During her working career she was the owner of Zane’s Place an antique store in Six Mile, was a bowling instructor, and also worked for Barnes Landscaping.
Surviving are a son, George V. Chastain, Jr. and his wife, Jeanne Goodman of Point Marion, Pa.; two grandsons, Jason and Dawson Chastain; three sisters in law, Cindy Hunter, Jean Watson, and June Finley and her husband Quillen; her beloved pet and companion, Alfie; special friends, Howard Ralph, Jr., Patricia Poehl, Buddy Rosado, Rozell Garrison, Patsy Morris, and Caroline Bagwell; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Chastain were 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Entombment was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

W. Clarence Simmons
Pickens — William Clarence Simmons, 94, formerly of Woodall Mountain Road, and husband of the late Ida Mae Aiken Simmons, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011.
Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late Earlie C. Simmons and Ollie Hudson Simmons. Mr. Simmons retired as the owner of the Pickens Radiator Shop. He was an active member of Pickens Church of God and the Pickens Senior Center.
Surviving are his children, Wesley Simmons and his wife, Rheba, of Pickens; Mary Ann Hayes and her husband, Theo, of Pickens; and Nancy Peace and her husband, Stan, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Gertrude Hughes and Doris Childs, of Pickens; and a brother, Garland Simmons, of Pickens.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by two sisters, Nina Anderson and Edna Tinsley, and two brothers, Garcie Simmons and Carl Simmons.

Weldon Gilbert, Jr.

Pickens — Weldon Gilbert, Jr., 82, of Pickens, died Feb. 2, 2011 at Rainey Hospice House.
Born April 18, 1928 in Gainesville, Ga., he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Gilbert, Sr. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He worked at the Atlanta Transit Company before moving to Pickens with his family. After moving to Pickens he was employed at Singer and Alice Manufacturing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Ricky Gilbert of Pickens and Dwayne Gilbert of Easley; two daughters, Sharon Whitworth (Victor) and Karon Hickey (Johnny), both of Pickens; three granddaughters and two grandsons.
The family appreciates every act of kindness that has been done during this time.
A memorial service was held Friday, Feb. 4 at Mountain Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. H.C. Couch officiating.

Joseph E. Rauschenbach
Simpsonville — Joseph “Joe” Eugene Rauschenbach, 49, died suddenly at his home, 102 A Alice Avenue, Simpsonville. 
Joe was born in Springfield, Ill., the son of the late Bill Rauschenbach.  He was a 1980 graduate of Pickens Senior High School.  He worked for Southeastern Concrete in Simpsonville. 
Surviving is his Mom, Joan, two brothers, six sisters and 14 nieces and nephews, Mary Bell (Danny), Matt Rauschenbach (Alba), Sue Williams, John Rauschenbach (Kathy), Nancy Bagwell (Avery), Amy Hood (Ralph), Carol Lawson (Rob), Margaret Holder (David).

Norris — Willie Joe “Bill” Murphree, 79, of 413 Norris Highway, Norris, husband of the late Alice Erhline Henson Murphree, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
A native of Salem, Mr. Murphree was the son of the late William Samuel and Amanda Josephine Barker Murphree. He was retired from Libco Mills and was a member of Stamp Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Murphree was a charter member and past Fire Chief of Norris Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Murphree is survived by daughter, Melissa (Lisa) Routh and husband, Gary of Sandy, Utah; brother, Davis Ray Murphree and wife, Sarah of Salem; sisters, Lucille Lee of Seneca and Blanche Smith of Salem; and grandchildren, Vanessa and Kelsey Routh.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Murphree was predeceased by brother, Thomas Murphree and sister, Esther Murphree.

Jerry Pace

Easley — Jerry Lee Pace, 73, of Easley, husband of Helen Morris Pace, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.
Mr. Pace was born in Pickens County, a son of the late J. Vernon and Ada Daves Pace. He was retired from Ryobi (Singer Company) in Pickens, and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. Mr. Pace was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife Helen, of the home, son Jody L. Pace (Kimberley A.) of Easley and granddaughter Madeline L. Pace. He is also survived by his brother Harold (Bobbie) of Pickens, and many, many church family members.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Pace was preceded in death by a brother Melvin Pace.
Funeral services were conducted 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens with the Rev. Paul Turner officiating. Burial followed in the Veteran’s Garden at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Easley — Mr. Jasper Howard Carter, 81, husband of the late Lucille Nalley Carter, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Anderson County, a son of the late John Henry and Lena Beasley Carter, Mr. Carter retired from Fiber Industries and Robinson Funeral Home, and was a member of Enon Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Mr. G. Keith Carter of Greenville; a daughter, Mrs. Faye C. Dickard of Chesterfield; a brother, Mr. J.B. Carter of Easley; a sister, Mrs. Azilee Anders of Easley; two grandchildren, Angie Mann and Lynn Dickard; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley Mann and Anna Mann.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Carter was predeceased by a daughter, Judy Elaine Carter; eight brothers and two sisters.

Helen Vaughn Bratcher
Central — Helen Alexander Vaughn Bratcher, 87, of 223 Maw Bridge Road, died Tuesday at her residence.
Born in Six Mile, she was the daughter of the late Arthur M. and Mae Ruth Finley Alexander. She was retired from the textile industry and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are daughters, Gail Snider of Central and Shelby Merck of Clemson; a sister, Frances Owen of Easley; granddaughters, Paula Millwood and her husband Stephen, and Angela Davis and her husband Terry; and a special great grandson, Jerimiah Millwood.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Lamar F. Vaughn; her second husband, Barney Bratcher; and brothers, Winford “Wink” Alexander and Marvin Alexander.
Graveside services to honor the life of Mrs. Bratcher were held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mt. Zion Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Albert Couch.

Alma J. Trotter
Pickens — Alma Viola Jones Trotter, 93, formerly of Fox Squirrel Ridge Road and widow of Arthur Edgar Trotter died Monday evening, Jan. 31, 2011.
Mrs. Trotter was born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Edward L. and Estelle Simmons Jones. She was retired from the School District of Pickens County where she spent her career working in school cafeterias. Mrs. Trotter was a member of Griffin Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons Wayne Trotter (Ruth), Jerry Trotter (Carolyn) and Randall Trotter (Terri) all of Pickens and daughters Jean Travers (Ed), and Jessie Mae James (Harold) all of Pickens, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Trotter was preceded in death by a daughter Sarah Hayes and a grandson Robert Trotter.

Six Mile — Carolyn Jean Teat Moore of 331 Old Keowee Church Road died on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011 at her home after a long illness.
Born in Central, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Leroy Teat and Kate “Jack” Sears Teat Hutto.  Carolyn was a graduate of Central High School and attended Draughn’s Business School.  She was a retired employee with J.P. Stevens, Clemson and was a member of Gap Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are sisters, JoAnne Vaughan of Rock Hill; Phyllis Sullivan and husband, Alan of St. Peters, Mo.; brother, Kenneth Teat of St. Peters, Mo.; a God-Child, Tiffany Lovell of Easley; and many cousins.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Land Brewer of the home; son, Ken Brewer of Lake Waccamaw, N.C.; daughters Marlene B. Adkins and husband, Dale of Clemson; and Rhonda B. Lee and husband, Rodney of Seneca; brother, Robert K. Brewer of Central; grandchildren, Carl Lee and John Dockins; Josh and Greg Bryant; Molly Holbrooks; Brian Adkins; and Bobby and Wayne Trotter; great-grandchildren Blake and Kaylee Holbrooks; Sara Beth, Matthew, Aubrey and Susanna Dockins; Keelie Bryant and Caroline Lee; and a special “daughter”, Kathy Brewer of Easley.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late John A. and Ruby Pressley Brooks, Mrs. Thrift was a homemaker and a member of Tabor United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Thrift (Nancy) of Easley and David Thrift (Chandra) of Pickens; a daughter, Stacey Chapman of Pickens; a sister, Ruby Nell Roach of Witchita Falls, Texas; and four grandchildren, Lauren Chapman, Mary Brooks Thrift, Amanda Deanhardt, and David Harrison Thrift.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Thrift was predeceased by three sisters, Sylvia Lyle, Sadie Lyle, and Jennie Dees.

Six Mile — Dorothy Stone Durham, 81, of 188 Love & Care Road, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011 at her residence.
Born in Six Mile she was the widow of R.G. Durham and a daughter of the late Abner Lester and Lela Hunnicutt Stone. She worked as a CNA for many years at Harvey’s Nursing Home, and Clemson Downs. She loved her Lord, and also loved bird watching, flowers, and doing arts and crafts.
Surviving are three daughters, Leatha Hembree of Pickens, Elaine Durham and Tracy McCall both of Six Mile; a son, Ronnie Durham of Six Mile; a brother, Harmon Stone; nine grandchildren, Charlynn Ezell, Travis Hembree, Terri Hair, James Durham, Greg Hembree, Marylaine Duncan, Amber Durham, Jimmy Fendley, Jessica Hedden; and three great grandchildren, Jason Bearden, Isaac Kukendall, Cayden Durham.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Durham, and two brothers, Garland & Leland Stone.

Liberty — Freda B. Reid, 61, wife of Willie Reid, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011 at Baptist Easley Hospital.
A native of Greenville she was the daughter of the late James and Doris Jean Ballenger Brown She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her husband she is survived by son Brian Cox of Greenville; daughter, Shelley Burrell (Deion) of Piedmont; sisters, Theresa Howell (Glen) of Arden, N.C. and Anita Price of Tenn. and grandchildren Owen and Quincy Cox and Lexie and Noah Burrell.

Lake Welborn

Easley — James Lake Welborn, 94, widower of Myrtie Mae Winchester Welborn, died on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011.
Born on July 11, 1916 in Pickens, he was the son of the late John Arlington Welborn and Mattie Stewart Welborn. He was an Army veteran of World War II having served in major campaigns in Europe, and was retired from the Singer Company. Mr. Welborn lived his life for Jesus and knew the joy of close ties with both Secona Baptist Church and Mountain Grove Baptist Church. Always a gentleman, he was much beloved by his family and many friends. He had an exceptional memory and visitors always left with a better understanding of God, nature, farm life, or World War II.
Surviving are nieces and nephews: Carol Warner Whetsell of Columbia, Lee (Janet) Warner of Raleigh, Martha (John) Preston of Hilton Head, Nancy Warner of Greenville, Alan (Lena) Warner of Pickens, Frankie Winchester Cantrell of Pickens, and Pam Winchester of Clemson. Also four great-nephews and two great-nieces. Mr. Welborn is also survived by his namesake, James Lake Cantrell.
He was predeceased by a sister, Lorena Welborn Warner.
The funeral service was Sunday, Feb. 6 at 3:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

She was the widow of Marvin James Stewart and a daughter of the late Charles L. and Ethel Merck Smith. She retired from Sangamo Electric and was a member of Gap Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters and a son in law, Gayle & Chris Minyard and Melanie Stewart all of Central; three sons and daughters in law, Steve & Mary Stewart, Joe & Joy Stewart, and Tim & Michele Stewart all of Central; a sister, Martha Stancil of Central; 15 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a son Tony Stewart.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Stewart will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Gap Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be at Gap Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
The family will be at the home of Gayle & Chris Minyard, 119 Daniel Trail, Central SC 29630.

Marjorie Buttgereit
Easley — Marjorie Cartmell Buttgereit, 82, of Easley, former wife of the late William G. Buttgereit died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 at her residence.
Born in Illinois, the daughter of the late Samuel and Bessie Fringer Cartmell, Mrs. Buttgereit was a nursing assistant and was of the Methodist faith. 
Surviving are two sons, David and Thomas Buttgereit; two grandchildren, Brandy Lynn and Timothy Micheal Buttgereit; one great-greatchild, Hayden Buttgereit; and four nieces Sandy, Nancy, Vicki Garrett, and Janet Cartmell.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by two brothers, Warren and Wendell Cartmell.
No services are planned.

Etrulia Bryant
Cateechee — Etrulia Byrd Bryant, 89, of 112 S. Main Street, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011 at the Hospice House in Anderson.
Born in Walhalla she was the widow of Lloyd E. Bryant and a daughter of the late Thomas W. and Annie Nix Byrd. She worked as a spinner for many years in the textile industry and was a member of Cateechee Baptist Church.
Surviving are a grandson, Chris Bryant and his wife Michelle of Anderson and a sister, Doris Byrd of Norris; two great grandchildren, Billy & Caleb Brooks; a special friend, Gary Lockhart of Montgomery, Ala.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas E. Bryant.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Bryant will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
