Chapman puts end to Devils’ season with dominant victory

INMAN — Despite a strong fourth-quarter performance, the Liberty Red Devils saw their season come to an end as they came up short at unbeaten Chapman, 54-7, in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs on Friday night.
The Devils faced a daunting task against the Panthers, who are now 11-0 on the season as they move on to host Newberry in the second round of the playoffs this Friday night.
Chapman scored early and often in the first two quarters, building a 41-point lead before halftime before eventually running the advantage up to 54-0 midway through the fourth quarter.
The Panthers kicked off the scoring with a 43-yard pass from Mikele Colasurdo to Dashun Mitchell just more than a minute and a half into the game.
Chapman scored twice more in the first quarter, on a 10-yard pass from Colasurdo to Walt Waddell and a 27-yard run from Brandon Jones.
The Panthers added in three more touchdowns in the second quarter — an eight-yard Dante Smith run, a 39-yard pass from Colasurdo to Ben Rollins and a 23-yard pass from Drew Settle to Mitchell.
