PICKENS — Helen Craig Scruggs Howland, 93, of 519 Wolf Creek School Road, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2015, at Manna Health & Rehab in Pickens.

Born in Pickens, she was the widow of Merle Howland a daughter of the late Rev. Clarence Craig and Ada Brown Craig.

She was a member of Blue Ridge View Baptist Church and throughout her life one of her greatest joys was children of all ages.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Stephens of Easley; two sons, Robert “Bobby” Scruggs (Cindy) of Pickens, and Ronnie Scruggs (Becky) of Easley; 16 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was the last survivor of her immediate family.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Sheldon Leon Scruggs, two daughters, Carolyn Scruggs Shipman Holcombe, and Margaret Ann Scruggs; a granddaughter, Patti Shipman, and two great-grandchildren, Derrick Lankford and Elizabeth Holder.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Howland were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

JANICE OWENS

PICKENS — Janice Elaine Smith Owens, 45, of 439 Brandy Lane, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pickens, she was a daughter of Roy J. Smith and the late Sara Boggs Smith.

She was the general manager of Hardees in Central and was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. She loved her family and spending time with her children.

Surviving in addition to her father of Pickens are her husband, Franklin “Chris” Owens of the home; a daughter, Anna Owens of the home; three sons, Adam, Michael, and Hank Owens all of home; a stepson, Jonathan Owens of Pickens; two brothers, Miles Smith of Liberty and Michael Smith of Pickens; and a grandson, Ben Owens.

Funeral services to celebrate Janice’s life were held at 2 p.m., Monday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

COY COX

PICKENS — Mr. Coy Cox, 86, husband of the late Lillian Lackey Cox of 103 Bowen Drive, Pickens, formerly of 114 Oaklane Drive, Easley, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015, at Countryside Village in Easley.

Mr. Cox was born on Feb. 17, 1928, in Pickens County to the late Hovie and Minnie Cox. He worked first shift at Saco-Lowell as a machine erector and was employed with several local gas stations, including Elrod’s Exxon and McCall’s station during the second shift. He enjoyed eating breakfast every morning at Hardee’s or Bojangle’s with his many friends, tending to his chickens, and fishing with his friends. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Landmark Baptist Church.

Coy is survived by a son, Glenn Lackey (Marianne) of Greenville; a daughter-in-law; Kathy Lackey-Putnam of Pickens; two grandchildren; Shannon Head (Robert) of Pickens, and Jon Scott Lackey; two step-grandchildren; Cindy Lollis of Simpsonville, and Rusty Bryant of Greenville; and one great-grandchild; Madalynn Katherine Head.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Fred Lackey, and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb 13, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with the Rev. Dave Price and the Rev. Gary Edwards officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorial donations be made to Lutheran Hospice of SC,429 North Main Street #3, Greenville, SC 29601, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 301 University Ridge, Greenville, SC 29601. The family would also like to thank Emeritus at Countryside Village and Lutheran Hospice for their compassion and loving care that they have shown them during this difficult time.

WILLIAM MARION TAYLOR

LIBERTY — Mr. William Marion Taylor, 100, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died at Baptist Easley Hospital on Sunday, Feb 15, 2015, after a brief illness.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Margaret Bennett Taylor; two daughters, Ann T. Bailey (Hugh) of Liberty;, Jane T. Sargent (Phil) of Easley; three sons, Jim Taylor of Charlotte, NC; David (Sheila) Taylor of Newnan, GA; and Allen Taylor of Liberty; nine grandchildren, Brent Bailey (Danielle), Kristen B. Lopez (Joel); Leah Taylor, Courtney and Caroline Sargent; Hailey Sisk (Brian), A. J. Spencer; and Ashlyn Taylor; four great- grandchildren, Madelyn Vance Bailey, Bailey and Eli Lopez, and Peyton Sisk; and one sister, Frances T. Garrett. He was predeceased by an infant son; a grandson, Vance Marion Bailey; four sisters, Doris T. Henderson, Elizabeth T. Smarr, Martha T. Stackhouse, and Mary T. Wilson, and one brother, Harry Ray Taylor.

Born in Union County on August 23, 1914, he was a son of the late Albert Jefferson and Bessie Humphries Taylor. An entrepreneur at the age of 16, he opened a general store to help support his family during the Great Depression. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946. He owned and operated the Western Auto in Liberty for more than 20 years before his retirement in 1976.

A member of First Baptist Church, Liberty for more than 60 years, he served on various committees and was a member of the T.E.L. Sunday School class. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 67, where he previously served as president. He enjoyed serving others as a driver for more than 20 years for Pickens County Meals on Wheels, where he previously served on the board of directors.

The family would like to express appreciation to the staff at Clemson Downs in Clemson and the staff at The Willows of Easley. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 400 Edgemont Avenue, Liberty, SC 29657.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Taylor will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Liberty. Private burial will be at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

BETTY CLARK

PICKENS — Betty Doris Chappell Clark, 81, of 716 E. Cedar Rock Street, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, at Manna Health and Rehab. Born in Easley she was a daughter of the late William Sanford and Lucille Dodgens Chappell.

She retired from the Pancake House in Easley and was of the Baptist faith. During her time as a resident at Manna, she enjoyed attending services and playing bingo.

Surviving are a daughter, Diane Harden (Howard) of Pickens; two sisters, Pat Rockwell and Barbara Hudson, both of Easley; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeannie Holliday, a son, Donald Robert Clark, a granddaughter, Melissa Diane Harden, and nine brothers and sisters.

Funeral services to honor Betty’s life were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

ROBERT C. ELLENBURG, SR.

SIX MILE — Robert Clifton Ellenburg, Sr., 90, husband of Mary Margaret Galloway Ellenburg, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015.

Mr. Ellenburg was born in Pickens County, a son of the late Verner T. and Della Richey Ellenburg. He was retired from Ryobi in Pickens and was a U. S. Army veteran of WWII.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Mary Ellenburg of the home, and a son, Robert C. Ellenburg, Jr. (Rheba) of Six Mile. Also surviving is a grandson, Robert D. “Robbie” Ellenburg (Ashley) of Pickens and great-grandchildren, Jada and Gracelynn Lomax and a sister, Frances E. Alexander of Six Mile.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Ellenburg was preceded in death by a son, Roger Dale Ellenburg, sisters, Dorothy Mull and Reba James, and a brother, Frank Ellenburg.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel. Burial followed at Mile Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Six Mile.

PICKENS — Violet Lewis Adcox, 87, wife of the late Charles E. Adcox, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015.

Mrs. Adcox was born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Ommie and Lois Simmons Lewis. For 18 years, she worked with Judson Mill in Greenville and later retired from Ryobi Motor Products after 15 years of service. She was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sons, Chuck Adcox (Lynn) of Six Mile and Bennie Adcox (Debbie) of Pickens; grandchildren, Jeff, Dane, and Zach Adcox (Kayla); great-grandchildren, Clay, Gage, Garrett and Griffin Adcox. Also surviving are sisters, Ruby Reid (Cecil); Faye Snipes (Harold); Gladys Baker (Merrill); Shirley Britton (Buddy); Dot Porter (Jerry); and Linda Hayes (Wayne).

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Adcox was preceded in death by three brothers, Barney, Charles and David Lewis.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

EASLEY — Mary Garrison Taylor, 79, of Blue Ridge Street, wife of the late Howard C. Taylor, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at her home.

Born in Salem County, N.J., a daughter of the late John R. and Elsie Hiles Garrison, Mrs. Taylor retired as a waitress and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas M. Jingeleski, Jr., and Steven Jingeleski, both of Woodstown, N.J.; four daughters, Dorothy James of Woodstown, N.J.; Deloris Stevens of Hollywood, Fla.; Mary Sinclair, NJ; and Donna Eppes of Easley; a brother, Kenneth Garrison of Woodstown, N.J.; four sisters, Doreen Sickler of Elmer, N.J., Jane Liber of Woodstown, N.J.; Blanche Dunn of Hamilton, Ohio; and Alice Loveland of Neptune, N.J.; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Taylor was predeceased by a brother, Russell Garrison.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in New Jersey.

PICKENS — John Coleman Burgess, 79, of 100 Hayes Road, husband of the late Inez Garren Burgess, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at his home.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late John and Rachel Redden Burgess, Mr. Burgess retired from Ryobi Corp. and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Alfred Burgess (Cindy) of Easley and David Burgess (Shirley) of Central; a daughter, Janet Phillips (Gordon) of Pickens; a brother, Albert Burgess of Pickens; a sisters, Grace Robinson of Pickens; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Burgess was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
