A trip down memory lane
Dear Editor,
Lot of stress going on now. How about we go down that precious lane called “memory lane,” to happier times? To a time when we older people were young.
Anyone remember soft drinks when they were in glass bottles and cost only a dime? Remember they had to be opened with a bottle opener? Cork, not plastic, lined the cap. Three swallows and you had to stop, because they would burn like fire!
Ever put salted peanuts in your drink? Remember when potato chips were in wax paper? Remember when 25 cents could buy a drink, potato chips and a candy bar?
Remember your first car? New or used, it was a prized possession to you. Racing pillows, AM radio, mag wheels, glasspack mufflers. Remember the first tape machine that could be installed in your car? Eight-track, no less. Remember those? A device called FM Converter that picked up FM and transmitted it in AM signal to the AM radio?
People actually talked on phones then. You had to go to a phone booth to make a call if in town. It cost a dime to make a call. Superman used these booths to change in. Never could understand why. Not like he was hidden.
Comic books were 12 cents then, and paperback books went for 50 cents. The dime store was the mall back then. No big malls close by.
Remember being able to walk down Main Street after dark and window shop?
When everyone knew everyone in town or country, whichever place you lived? No yard lights in the country. When dark came, it was pitch black back then.
Remember when life was slower? No hurry up and get it done yesterday? When men went to the barbershop, women to the beauty parlor. Women wore dresses and high heels.
Remember being able to take your date out to the movies and buying popcorn and drinks, yet still have enough for a hamburger meal after the movie? All for five dollars!
Well it wasn’t, after all, yesterday. Seems like it, though, doesn’t it? Hope this helped relieve some of the stress. Remember, as bad as it is now, this too will pass. God willing, we will survive.
