Joey Waldrop

Pickens -— Mr. Joel “Joey” Wayne Waldrop, Jr., 48, husband of Teresa L.S. Waldrop, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at Duke University Hospital, Durham, N.C.

Born in Pickens County, a son of Joel Wayne Waldrop, Sr. and Miriam Watson Waldrop, Mr. Waldrop was a graduate of Pickens High School and Tri-County Technical College, where he earned his associate degree. He was employed with BMW and previously worked with the Department of Defense in England and Australia. Joey was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. In all that he had accomplished in life, being a Daddy, showing his love for his family, and being a living example of a Godly man were his first priorities.

Surviving, in addition to his wife and parents, are three sons, Kiley Waldrop and his fiancee’, Marlee, Karson and Kwenton Waldrop, all of Pickens; two daughters, Kindele Childs and her husband, Cameron, and Kayla Waldrop, all of Pickens; two step-sons, Logan and Evan Williams, both of Pickens; three sisters, Jean Dillard and her husband David, of Liberty, Janet Laney and her fiance’, Marty, of Liberty, and Joanna Compton and her husband, Bryon, of LaVista, Neb.; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Shannon Camp, and Tamara and Ed Wood.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Mountain View Baptist Church, Six Mile with the Rev. Rick Hayes and the Rev. Brian Scruggs officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. 

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at the church, prior to the service.

The family is at the home of his parents, 388 Turner Road, Pickens, SC 29671.

 Katie V. Gilstrap

Pickens — Katie Virginia Gilstrap, 68, of Moorefield Memorial Highway, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of Violet Edith Stephens Gilstrap of Pickens and the late Arthur Henry Gilstrap. Miss Katie was loved and cherished by all who knew her. She was a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving is a daughter, Mindy Phillips of Pickens; two grandchildren, Corey Phillips and Brycen Hogue; four sisters, Shirley Morgan (Mike) of Seneca, Judy Parris (Harold) of Pickens, Edith Owens (Jr.) of Easley and Martha Tucker (Scott) of Columbia; five brothers, Pete Gilstrap, Mack Gilstrap, Jack Gilstrap (Arlene), David Gilstrap and Steve Gilstrap all of Pickens; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. at Mountain Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

RICKY E. DURHAM

SIX MILE — Ricky E. Durham, 53, of 308 Love and Care Rd., Six Mile, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013 at home.

Ricky is the son of Larry and Joyce Barker Durham of Six Mile.

In addition to his parents, Ricky is survived by a son Jason Mealor of Greenville; a sister Carol Thomas of Pickens; Brother Tony (Kim) Durham of Seneca; and two grandsons Eric and Lastat Mealor of Seneca; and a special friend Denise Hayes of Six Mile and his dog Rocky.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 5 at Mile Creek Baptist Church.

Palmetto Cremation Service is assisting the Durham family.

Grace M. Goss

Pickens — Grace Medlin Goss, 85, of Dunn Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013 at her home.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Joseph Harley and Theny Q. Landers Medlin, Mrs. Goss retired from Sir Shirt Maker in Pickens and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Randy and Tim McAlister; seven daughters, Carolyn Hill, Elaine Perry, Ann Ryan, Tammy Gilliland, Darlene Goss, Loretta Goss and Debbie Lesley; a brother, Joe Medlin; two grandchildren whom she raised, Brian Summers and Heather Dalton; 37 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Goss was predeceased by a daughter, Linda M. McAlister, two sons, Miles Lester Goss, Jr., and James Donald McAlister, by three brothers, Jim Frank Medlin, Raymond Medlin and J.T. Medlin, one sister, Corrine Hedding and by three grandchildren, Steve Yeager, Jamie McAlister and Micheal Karra.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial will follow in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in Seneca.

The family is at the home of Loretta Goss, 407 West Front Street, Liberty, SC 29657.

Frances Elizabeth Porter

Easley — Frances E. Porter, 83, died on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013.

Frances was born on Dec. 30, 1929 in Pickens County a daughter of the late Walt and Jessie Porter.

She is survived by three sons; Derrill Collins, of Sunset Beach, N.C., Gerald Collins of Savannah, Ga., and Terry Collins of Albany, Ga., six sisters; Alice Turner, Essie Whitmire, Margaret Cochran, Dorothy Ann Mitchum, Betty Dorsey, and Lillie Mae Merck, two brothers; James Porter and Carl Porter, two grandchildren; Brooks and Lee Collins, special friend and caregiver; Charlotte Howard of Savannah, Ga. and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son; John Collins, a sister; Louise Porter and two brothers; Jerry and Buddy Porter.

A graveside service was held 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Jerry Banks

Easley — Jerry Dean Banks, 68, of 214 Hamilton Street, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2013.

Born in Hendersonville, N.C., a son of the late Guy and Beatrice Banks, Jerry retired from Mauldin Electric Company and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a son, Sean Sexton; two daughters, Rolanda Kelly and Cynthia Wright; a brother, Tommy Banks; a sister, Kathy Banks and eight grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was predeceased by a son, Thad Sexton and by two daughters, Geraldine Sexton and Kim Renee Zanatos.

Memorial graveside services were 11 a.m. Wednesday at Graceland Cemetery West.

Wanda Sargent

Six Mile — Mrs. Wanda Kloos Rawson Sargent, 70, wife of Mr. Thomas Nelson Sargent, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at her residence.

Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to the late Harry and Essie Johnson Kloos, Mrs. Sargent was a former employee of United Life Insurance Company in Cedar Rapids. While living in Iowa, she was very active in the community: She was a member of the Insurance Women of Cedar Rapids, Inc., served as a Chaplain for the American Legion Auxillary of Hanford Post #5, and volunteered with Community Friends for the Linn County Mental Health Advocates. Wanda loved flowers, and in her free time, you could always find her in the garden taking care of all the different types that she had planted.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Greg Mohr (Marilyn) of Sidney, Mont.; four brothers, Don, Glenn, and her twin brother, Wayne Kloos, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Art Kloos of Hiawatha, Iowa; a sister, Bonnie Mitchell of Bella Vista, Ark.; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews; and one great-great nephew.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Twyla Kloos, Velma Mohr, and Betty Edmonds.

Memorial services were 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

Alma Lee Daniels Johnson

Barrytown, Ala. — Mrs. Alma Lee Daniels Johnson, age 87, died on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at her home in Barrytown, Ala.

She is survived by her husband, Gerald “Pete” Johnson of Barrytown, Ala.; two sons, Jimmy Arledge of Pickens, Eddie Arledge (Debbie) of Pickens; two daughters, Edie Brady of Augusta, Ga., Tonya Giles Whigham (Gary) of Daphne, Ala.; two sisters, Fannie Mae Gillespie (David) of Chickasaw, Ala., Christine Adams of Chickasaw, Ala.; two grandchildren, Jamie Arledge, Corey Arledge (Amanda); and two great grandchildren, Owen Arledge, and Sealey Arledge.

She was preceded in death by her father Will Daniels and mother Ada Lee Logan Gilreath.

Funeral services for Mrs. Alma Lee Daniels Johnson were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Phillips Funeral Home in Gilbertown, Ala., with the Rev. Chad Adams and the Rev. Lester Pope officiating. Interment was in the Gilbertown Cemetery in Gilbertown, Ala.

Pallbearers included Terry Johnson, Dusty Johnson, Logan Johnson, Kelly Johnson, Corey Johnson, and Lance Sims.
