Joel E. Allgood
Pickens — Joel Edward Allgood, Sr., 83, husband of Evelyn Heath Allgood, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014.
Mr. Allgood was born in Pickens County, a son of the late Joel Irvin and Kate Holder Allgood. He was retired from The City of Pickens as water superintendant after 18 years service. He also served on the Pickens City Council for six years. Mr. Allgood was a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church where he was a member of the choir, former deacon, and a member of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class. Mr. Allgood was very active in the Senior Olympics where he won many medals.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Evelyn H. Allgood of the home, his daughter, Elaine A. Cauthen (Rex) of Easley, and his son, Joel E. “Eddie” Allgood, Jr. (Debbie) of Pickens. Grandchildren include Mandy Roberts (Scott), Jennifer Crain (Phillip) and Katie Boiter (Travis) and great grandchildren, Brandon Roberts, Lexie Roberts, Will Crain, and Kaylin Crain. Also surviving is a sister, Ida Katherine Westbrook of Pickens.
Funeral services were 1 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home in the chapel. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Betty J. Ashley
Pickens — Betty J. Ashley died on Feb. 11, 2014.
Betty was born in Hinton, W.Va. the daughter of Paul Stewart and Marie Allen James.
She was a joy to her family and those around her. Betty was a well known and respected church musician: She was an organist for a major theater in Huntington, W.Va. She was an organizer and director of youth choirs, adult choirs, and hand bell choirs in South Carolina, Florida and West Virginia.
Her most recent love was the music director at Grace United Methodist Church in Pickens. She served as director of Creative Ministries St. Mark United Methodist Church of Seneca and also serving as their choir director. More recently she served Grace UMC in a similar capacity. Betty, at the request of President Frank Foster of the Florida Jaycees, became the organizing chairperson of the Florida Jaycee Auxiliary. She was honored to be awarded Congresswoman #l by that organization in 1976. Betty and her husband became associate members of the First Presbyterian Church of Hinton, W.Va. where they attended church while in summer month’s vacations.
Betty was an exceptional Sunday school teacher. She taught the Pairs and Spares Class at the First Methodist Church of Vero Beach for many years.
She taught the Joel Cannon Class at Grace UMC for several years; and she proudly remained a member of the class until her passing.
She is survived by her husband Bill and three sons: James Allen Ashley and wife Debbie of Greenville, W.Va.; William T. Ashley II and wife Laurie of Tallahassee, Fla.; and Bradley S. Ashley and wife Cindy of Sebastian, Fla. Other than her sons she is survived by: Jennifer and Jamie Lowry of Talcott, W.Va.; Katie, Meredith and Elizabeth Ashley of Tampa and Tallahassee; Amie Brister and husband Sheldon of Vero Beach, Fla.; and Amanda and Dan Paholsky of Los Angeles, Calif. There are also six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 309 East Cedar Rock Street, Pickens SC 29671 or to the First Presbyterian Church of Hinton, WV 25951.
Memorial services were held at Grace United Methodist Church, Pickens at 2 p.m. Sunday Feb. 16. A second service was planned in Hinton, W.Va. on Tuesday the 18 at the Presbyterian Church, weather permitting. Final plans for Hinton are subject to change due to the unusual travel requirements.

Rev. G.W. Warren
Easley — The Rev. G.W. Warren, 91, of Highland Circle, husband of the late Frances Louise Berry Warren, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014 at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Born in Geneva County, Ala., to the late Allie G. and Effie Mae Newton Warren, Mr. Warren was formerly employed with Saco Lowell and Kash & Karry, Central Textiles and Ortec. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in WWII. Stationed in the Philippines, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star and was one of the last surviving veterans of the Corregidor Campaign. Mr. Warren was a Pentecostal minister and a member of New Image Outreach.
Mr. Warren is survived by six sons, Bruce, George, Edward, Joe, Cecil, and Joel Warren; four daughters, Joan Warren, Marilyn Reynolds, Charlotte McConnell and Carol Martin; 23 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Myrnette Kimbrell; three brothers, Ray, Harve, and Buster Warren; and three sisters, Maude Rowland, Mary Alice Pervis and Madelene Williford.
Funeral services were 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 at New Image Outreach Church. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Easley.

Robert Wyatt Tinsley
Easley — Robert Wyatt Tinsley, 81, of Easley, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014.
Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Zack Robert and Lila Nolan Tinsley, Mr. Tinsley retired from the textile industry and was a member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Gassaway Tinsley; a son, Bobby Tinsley and wife, Carol; a daughter, Kim Lappin and husband, Daniel; a brother and two sisters; four grandchildren, Nate and Jake Tinsley, Ben Lappin and wife, Kristen, and Matthew Lappin and wife, Ashley; and four great-grandchildren, Luke, James, Haley and Aubrey Lappin; and an expected great-grandchild due in August. Mr. Tinsley loved and adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Tinsley was predeceased by a sister.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road. Entombment followed in the Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum of Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Richard Banks for the special care and loving friendship they provided during Wyatt’s extend illness.

Martha Hinton Dunn
Pickens — Martha Hinton Dunn, 87, of Pickens, wife of Sam C. Dunn died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014 at her home.
Born in Pickens County, Mrs. Dunn was a daughter of the late Olar Thompson Hinton, Sr. and Lois Newton Hinton. She was a third grade teacher in Pickens and later co-owner and bookkeeper for S.C. Dunn Lumber Company. Mrs. Dunn was a member of Pickens First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and played the piano. She was a graduate of Pickens High School and a 1943 graduate of Furman University.
Surviving in addition to her husband of 65 years are, two sons, Chip Dunn and his wife Sheila and Joe Dunn and his wife Nicki; five grandchildren, Jennifer Dunn, Ashley Clardy, Lawson Dunn, Logan Tweito and Nolan Dunn; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Pinkie N. Hinton, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dunn was preceded in death by a sister, Corrine Hinton Isley; four brothers, Calhoun, Trescott, Joel and Olar “Red” Hinton Jr.
Graveside services were at 12 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 at Sunrise Cemetery in Pickens, with the Rev. Dr. Fred Stone officiating.

Billy Chappell
Easley — Billy Leroy Chappell, 65, husband of Martha Wimpey Chappell, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Pickens County, to the late Preston and Mary Dean Chappell, Billy was a spreader and a cutter at Carolina Fashions in Greer. In his off time, Billy loved to fish and go deer hunting.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Brenda L. Odom (John) of Florida; a brother, Calvin M. Chappell; a sister, Marie Belt; seven grandchildren, Derrick E. Chappell, Destin M. Chappell, Ashley R. Odom, Haley S. Odom, Heather Chappell, Courtney Chappell and Tommy Chappell; and one great-grandson.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Billy E. Chappell.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Alfred Jorden Duncan
Easley — Alfred Jorden Duncan, 77, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014.
Born in Easley he was a son of the late Benjamin “Perry” and Maggie Phillips Duncan. Jorden was a member of Easley First Baptist Church. He had a successful management career in textiles, retiring as owner and President of Piedmont Pad, Inc. As a good athlete, he enjoyed sports as a participant and spectator. He also valued spending his time with family.
Surviving are his high school sweetheart and wife of 59 years, Shirley Bryant Duncan; one daughter, Susan Hendrix (James), and one son, Barry Duncan (Rosemary); five grandchildren, Matthew (Melanie) and Justin Hendrix (Lani), Jorden White (Will), and Anna and Bryant Duncan, and two great-grandchildren, Chase and Calvin Hendrix. Also surviving are a brother, James Duncan (Cathy), and two sisters, Patricia Jones (Lewis) and Evelyn Cantrell.
He was preceded in death by brothers Frank and Harold Duncan, and sisters, Ozell Owen, Irene Bigham, and Bobbie Garrett.
Graveside funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Duncan were 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 at Liberty Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Dr. John Adams.

Vivian Seay
Dacusville — Vivian Alexander Seay, 80, of Dacusville, wife of Charles L. Seay, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014.
Born in Enoree, Mrs. Seay was a daughter of the late Edward T. Alexander and Lois Smith Alexander. She retired from Ryobi in Pickens after 37 years of service. Mrs. Seay was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church and was a member of the John Tollison Sunday School class and also a member of Annie Finley WMU. Mrs. Seay loved working in her flower gardens, sewing, and she enjoyed Nascar racing.
Surviving in addition to her husband, are three daughters, Janet Morgan (Bill) of Pickens, Christie Head of Easley and Patty Lamb (Kenny) of Spartanburg; a son Steve Seay (Robin) of Easley; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; a sister, Sue Tucker of Greenwood; four step-sisters, Hazel Shirley, Alma Fortner, Edith Durham and Debra Webb all of Easley.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Seay was predeceased by a brother, Gary A. Alexander; a step-sister, Helen Gilbert; two step-brothers, Bud and Roy Gilbert.
Funeral services were 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 at Cross Roads Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Walt Belt
Easley — James Walter “Walt” Belt, 86, of Pleasant Drive, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 at his home.
Born in Pickens County, a son of the late J.F. and Mary Lesley Belt, Mr. Belt retired from the Easley Mill Plant of Woodside Mills and was a member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church where he belonged to the Men’s Bible Class. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the US Navy.
Surviving are a son, Danny Belt and wife, Marie; two grandchildren, Tim Belt and wife, Misty, and Kim Diffee and husband, Jamey; and three great-grandchildren, Breeanna Belt, Daniel Belt and Alexander Diffee.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Belt was predeceased by his wife, Louise Pace, and by brother, Riley, Luke and Charlie Belt and sisters, Maggie Capps, Pearl Gillespie and Ellamae Kennomore.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Westview Cemetery.

Joyce Wallace
Pickens — Joyce Venable Wallace, 67, of 466 Ambler School Road, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Born in Missouri, a daughter of the late Carl and Helen Nipper Venable, Mrs. Wallace was a licensed practical nurse and a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, Gordon Wallace of the home; a son Jody Wallace and wife, Tammy, of Greenville; a daughter, Tina Floyd and husband, Billy, of Centerville, Ga. and Joy Brown and husband, Curt, of Forreston, Ill.; two brothers, Jimmy Venable and Mike Venable, both of Rockford, Ill.; three sisters, Linda Adkisson, Lois Johnson and Debra Opsahl, all of Rockford, Ill.; grandchildren, Amy Sherman, Katherine Hendricks, Ethan Hendricks, Nathan Howe and Mikayla Brown, step-grandchildren, Amanda Floyd, Adam Brown, Andrew Brown, Cylee Brown and Chris Wilson; and a great-grandson, Alex Sherman.

Evelyn G. Smith
Liberty — Evelyn Gantt Smith, 69, widow of Phil Smith, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014.
Evelyn was born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Avery and Coralee Crumpton Gantt. She was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son, Keith Smith (Zena) and her daughter, Angie Kay (Rodney Lark) all of Liberty, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Wilma Fisher of Liberty, and brothers, Welton Gantt (Margaret) and Wayne Gantt (Debbie) all of Pickens.
In addition to her parents and husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Tina Smith.
A memorials service was 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens in the chapel.

Pickens — Mrs. Jane Anne Laciura Krantz, 58, wife of Kenneth William Krantz, Sr., died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 at her home.
Born in Paterson, N.J., a daughter of the late Joseph Frank and Joan Theresa Schottanes Laciura, Mrs. Krantz retired as a retail clerk, and was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are four sons, JoDon Lipscomb of Florida, Jessie Lipscomb, Justin Lipscomb, and Kenneth Krantz, Jr., all of Pickens; a sister, Janice Faye Weinberg of Florida; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

Hazel Dodgens
Pickens -— Hazel Arlene Nix Dodgens, 74, of 138 Rosemond Street died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 at Redeemer Health & Rehab in Pickens.
Born in Pickens, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Reece Nix. She was retired from Ryobi and was a member of Mt. Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Richard Dodgens and his wife Joyce, Maurice Dodgens and his wife Patricia and Keith Dodgens and his wife Robyn all of Pickens; three sisters Christine Julian of Easley, Gladys Looper of Pickens and Brenda Walker of Westminster; two brothers, Clarence Nix of Pickens and Calvin Nix of Saluda; six grandchildren, Johnathan, Billy, Curtis, Abigail and Emma Dodgens, and Rebecca Myers; and five great grandchildren, Braxton, Wyatt, Wesley, Hadley and Ashley.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by two sisters, Lois Porter and Lillian Holcombe.
Graveside services to honor the life of Ms. Dodgens was held at 11 Wednesday at Mt. Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Priscilla S. Chastain
Greenville — Priscilla Smith Chastain, 88, widow of Quentin Roosevelt Chastain, died, Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville.
Mrs. Chastain was born in Rosman, N.C., a daughter of the late Enos M. and Ola Hunter Smith. She was retired from Kmart in Greenville as a sales associate in health and beauty aids. Mrs. Chastain was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and the Auditorium Sunday School Class and assisted with the primary department for many years.
Survivors include one daughter, June Tuck (Harold) of Piedmont, two sons, Gary Chastain (Linda) of Ovilla, Texas and Roger Chastain (Jeri) of Reidville. Grandchildren include, Suzanne Mize, Jimmy Tuck, Alison Sanders, Gared Chastain, Adam Chastain, and Joy Bagwell and great grandchildren, Anna Tuck, Autumn Tuck, Eli Bagwell, Isaiah Bagwell, Noah Bagwell, Dylan Chastain, Gavin Chastain, Skylar Chastain, Grace Sanders, Kelly Sanders, and Eliana Chastain. Also surviving is a brother, Cecil Smith (Audrey) and a sister, Rachel Bagwell all of Pickens.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Chastain was preceded in death by a brother, Edgar Smith and a sister, Christine Stansell.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 3:30 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Doctor Melvin Aiken, Mr. Gared Chastain, and Mr. Jimmy Tuck officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.
