Carl A. Bearden
Easley — Carl Adams Bearden, 91, husband of the late Shirley Marie Barrett Bearden, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
Mr. Bearden was born in Oconee County, a son of the late Joseph Freeman and Carrie Etta Baygents Bearden. He graduated from Walhalla High School and subsequently joined the U.S. Navy. At age 20, he was serving in the Panama Canal Zone when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He served 20 years in the Navy, also stationed in Pensacola, Fla., Norfolk, Va., and aboard the U.S.S. Cabot (CVL-28) aircraft carrier. In July of 1946, Carl and Shirley were married at the U. S. Naval Air Station Chapel in Pensacola. They were together for 63 happy years. In 1959 Mr. Bearden went to work for the Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago and in 1967 returned to South Carolina where he worked at Donaldson Center in Greenville and later for Platt Saco Lowell in Easley. Mr. Bearden was an accomplished woodworker, carpenter, and furniture maker. He and his wife were members and contributors of the Senior Citizens of Greenville Country Store in McPherson Park, Greenville and also in the South Carolina Artisans Center in Walterboro.
Survivors include his daughter, Carla B. Rood of Easley and his granddaughter, Vanessa Rood Weatherly and her husband Robert Foster Weatherly of Atlanta, Ga.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Bearden was preceded in death by a brother Milton Edward Bearden.
Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Pickens. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Charles Daniel Walters
Easley — Charles Daniel Walters, 41, of 112 Mauldin Road died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.
Born in Stuart, Fla., he was a son of Thelma Mathis Holcombe of Easley and the Late John Walters. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his mother are a daughter, Nebraska Chapman (Michael) of Fort Polk, La.; a son, Cherokee Walters of Pickens; a sister, Becky Parker of Panama City, Fla.; a brother, Sammy Walters of North Carolina; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Moore and Jasper Chapman.
In addition to his father he was predeceased by a son, Daniel Walters.
Funeral services for Mr. Walters were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

J.R. Lang
Pickens — J.R. Lang, age 79, husband of Ann M. Lang, died Monday Aug. 19, at his home.
Mr. Lang was born in Kirtpatrick, Ind.; a son of the late Nita Woodrum Lang and William David Lang. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, two sons; Earl Joseph LeBoeuf of Winter Haven, Fla., Robert Ray Lang of Pickens, one daughter; Marjarie Ann Weaver of Illinois, two sister-in-laws; Ina Lang of Hammond, Ind. and Edna Reece of Dacusville and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday Sept. 7 at Pickens Presbyterian Church.

Jessie M. Harrison
Liberty — Jessie Melton Harrison, 98, died peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013 at her residence.
Born in Liberty she was the widow of the Rev. Coley J. Harrison and a daughter of the late John and Mae Wardlaw Melton. She was a homemaker and a longtime member of Calumet Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Faye Gillespie and her husband Jimmy of the home; two sisters, Velma Burns of Knoxville, and Willie Jane Angus of North Dakota; three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dhet Harrison, a son, Lamar Harrison, and a granddaughter, Cathy Stephens.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to her caregiver, Doris Smith, for her outstanding love, care, and support during Mrs. Harrison’s sickness.
Funeral services to honor Mrs. Harrison’s life were 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Charles Hayward Holliday
Easley — Mr. Charles Hayward Holliday, 83, husband of Frances Owens Holliday, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013 at Magnolia Place of Greenville.
Born in Anderson County, a son of the late Arthur Hulet and Lena Sweet Holliday, Mr. Holliday graduated from Easley High School. He retired from Delta Woodside Mills and was a member of Geer Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Holliday served in the National Guard.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 64 years, are a son, Scott Holliday (April) of Easley; a daughter, Wanda Stewart (John) of Easley; two brothers, Roy Hulet Holliday and Walter Holliday, both of Easley; a sister, Anne Davis of Piedmont; three grandchildren, Chad Stewart, Stacey Griffith, and Meredith Holliday; and two great-grandchildren, Sarah and C.J. Stewart.
Mr. Holliday was predeceased by three brothers, James, Gerald, and Melvin Holliday.
Funeral services were 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Escort of Honor was the George Pizzi Sunday School Class at Geer Memorial Baptist Church.

Mary Etta Smith Hunter
Central — Mary Etta Smith Hunter, 89. of 464 Simms School Road and widow of Charles David Hunter, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Pickens.
Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Martin Louis and Ada Nancy Josephine Nix Smith.
Mary Etta was a homemaker and a member of Cannon Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving are sons, David (Sue) Hunter, Thomas (Janet) Hunter, Gerald (Phronsia) Hunter, Tony (Rosemary) Hunter all of Central; daughter, Joyce (Roger) Stephens of Six Mile; grandchildren, Daniela (Tim) Lynn, Julie (John) Nosko, Jeff (Leslie) Hunter, Alina (Joey) Herring, Alan (Jennifer) Stephens, Alexis (Wesley)Bridges, Daniel (Laura)Hunter, Amee (Jay)Wright; two step-grandchildren Justin and Courtney Barksdale; great grandchildren, Kristen Bridges, Logan Bridges, Zachary Lynn, Daniel Lynn, Mary Katherine Herring, Kalynn Herring, Kinsleigh Herring, James Stephens and Andrew Stephens; and two step-grandchildren, Dylan and Breanna Barksdale.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by brothers, Mack Smith, Frank Smith and Joe Smith; sisters, Betty Lee Wilson, Bessie Mae Swords, Willie Smith, Bernice Whitaker, Leila Childs and Marie Gossett.
Funeral services were 3 p.m., Monday in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central. Burial followed in Refuge Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ray Watson
Pickens — Herbert Ray Watson, 72, of 541 Praters Creek Road, died peacefully on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 at his residence.
Born in Pickens he was a son of the late Quinnie and Leila Bolding Watson. He was a retired truck driver from PYA Monarch and was a member of Praters Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Watson was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He loved his dog “Maggie” and working on Volkswagens and Trikes. He was also a member of Six Mile Masonic Lodge #339 AFM.
Surviving are his wife, Mattie Mullinax Watson of the home; three daughters, Missy Tidwell of Six Mile, Amanda Watson of Greenville, and Kayla Watson of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Martha Thrasher of Fair Play, and Mary Brown of Pickens; a brother, Randy Watson of Pickens.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mr. Watson were 11 a.m. Monday at Praters Creek Baptist Church. Burial followed in the churchyard.

Dorothy Roper Swinyer
Easley — Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Bagwell Roper Swinyer, 86, wife of Charles Henry Swinyer and the late Roy Edward Roper, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 at her home.
Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Tandy and Elizabeth Freeman Bagwell, Mrs Swinyer retired from First Union Bank and was a member of Easley First Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Jennifer Welborn and Julie Smith (Michael), all of Easley; a brother, Johnny W. Bagwell (Jacqueline) of Augusta, Ga.; three step-sons, Mickey, Greg, and Ron Swinyer; two step-daughters, Charlene Brock (Tony), and Cheryl Hudson (Travis); three grandchildren, Jessica Welborn, Stephanie Looper, and William Smith; one great-grandchild, Reagan Dickson; seven step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her first husband and parents, Mrs. Swinyer was predeceased by a daughter, Anita Joan Byers; four brothers, William, Lonnie, Edgar, and Hubert Bagwell; four sisters, Icie Dickard, Eddie Mae Morton, Jo Ann Bouchillon, and Bertha Swayngham; and a great-grandchild, Claire Autry Smith.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown with the Rev. Dr. John Adams officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Ludie D. Adams
Sunset — Ludie Drake Adams, 91, of Rocky Bottom, widow of Doyle R. Adams, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013 at Petra Health and Rehab in McCormick.
Born in Belton, and a native of Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Wardlaw Todd Drake and Louise Dickson Drake. Mrs. Adams was a graduate of Greenville High School and attended Lander College. She retired from Mayfair Mills after 33 years of service. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church serving as Treasurer of the United Methodist Women for many years, served on Pickens City Council for 13 years and was formerly employed with Dillard Funeral Home.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel W. Adams and Bonnie Bukler Adams of McCormick; three granddaughters, Amanda A. Williams, Ashley A. Bagwell and Andrea A. Sarvis; and seven great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Horace L. Drake.
Graveside services for Mrs. Adams will be held on Wednesday Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends immediately following at the graveside.

Betty “Ma” Knight
Liberty — Betty Jean “Ma” Burns Knight, 77, of 200 Bridgewater Road, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 at Manna Health & Rehab.
Born in Easley she was the widow of Thomas Andrew “Fuzz”, Sr. and a daughter of the late Jack Prince, Sr. and Ollie Bolt Burns. She was the founder of Betty’s Hungry House “The Original Betty from 1981-1985” in Seneca, and was later the Vice President of Knight Amusement Company.
Surviving are three sons, David Knight (Melissa) of Pickens, Tommy Knight, Jr. of Six Mile, and Donnie Knight (Dot); a daughter, Sandra Keenan (James) of Liberty; a son-in-law, Kent Gardner of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, Johnny Burns of Liberty; five grandchildren, two great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Curtis Knight.

Lola Gabriel
Prosperity — Lola R. Gabriel, 92, of Prosperity, widow of Julius Earl Gabriel, Sr. died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 at her residence.
Born March 1, 1921 in Williamston, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Mae Jones Reese. During World War II, she was a master welder and riveter at the Savannah Shipyard. After her husband retired from the U.S. Army, they retired to Prosperity. There she was a Charter member of Park Road Baptist Church where she was very active. She was also active with Scouting and was a Red Cross volunteer.
She is survived by her children, Julius Earl Gabriel, Jr. (Rebecca) of Pickens, Mavis McLeod (Thom) of Columbia, and Dennis Gabriel (Lynne) of Augusta; sisters, Ruby Benjamin of Greenwood and Grace Raymond of Columbia; brother, Fred Reese (Betty) of Greenwood; sister-in-law, Esther Reese of Greenwood; grandchildren Julie Ray (Greg) of Greer, Kimberly Stephens of Chapin, and Katie Morris (Eric) of Wendell, NC; and great-grandchildren, Hannah, Claire, Macay, Macenzie, and Marlowe.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home chapel. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to visit at Park Road Baptist Church following the interment.

Amos M. McCall
Easley — Amos Marion McCall, 89, of Pope Field Road, husband of the late Amelia Brown McCall, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2013 at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Born in Anderson County, a son of the late Arlander and Tulluah Waldrop McCall, Mr. McCall was a graduate of Easley High School and retired from Celanese Corp. He was a member of Easley First Wesleyan Church.
Surviving are a son, Monte McCall and wife, Brenda, of Barnesville, Ga.; grandchildren, Brendon M. McCall (Dana) of Roswell, Ga., Travis L. McCall of Bristol, Tenn, and Britni M. Chambless (Ken) of Raleigh, N.C.; sister-in-law, Louise McCall of Easley; special friend, Ruelle Thompson of Honea Path and several nieces and a nephew.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. McCall was predeceased by four brothers, Shannon McCall, Earl McCall, Norwood McCall and Wilton McCall.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 1 until 2:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Jo Ann Chandler
Easley — Jo Ann Busha Chandler, 75, of Old Stage Coach Road, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013 at her residence.
Born in Six Mile, she was the wife of Larry Frederick Chandler of the home and a daughter of the late James Henry and Rosa Anna Anderson Busha. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Kim Brown(Scott) of Easley; two sons, Mike Chandler(Janice) of Fair Play and Mark Chandler(Cindy) of Easley; a sister, Peggy Stewart of Liberty; a brother, Charles Busha of Greenville; seven grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Helen Racine.
Graveside services for Mrs. Chandler were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Hagood Norris
Easley — Hagood Earl Norris, 68, of 130 Freebird Lane, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013 at the Hospice House in Anderson.
Born in Pickens he was the widower of Nancy Kelley Norris and a son of the late J.W. and Clara Gillespie Norris. He retired from Mayfair Mills and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Tina House (Billy) of Pickens, Gail Dalton (Kevin) of Marietta, and Kimberly Childers (Jeff) of Easley; a daughter in law, Teresa Denise Norris of Easley; three sisters, Martha Jean Wardlaw, Margaret Bolding, and Lola Townsend all of Pickens; a brother, David Norris of Pickens; eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by a son, Hagood Earl “Buddy” Norris, Jr.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Norris will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be at Midway Baptist Church.

Thelma Hendrix
Easley — Mrs. Thelma McQueen Hendrix, 83, wife of the late Lewis Earl Hendrix, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at her home.
Born in Pickens County, to the late Richard E. and Ruth Brown McQueen, Mrs. Hendrix was a member of New Springs Church, and loved to plant flowers in her garden.
Surviving are a son, Curtis Hendrix (Mau) of Easley; two brothers, Joe McQueen of Pickens, and James McQueen of Easley; and two sisters, Dorothy Foster of Easley, and Bobbi Loftis of Georgia; three grandchildren, Buddy, Ron, and Samuel Hendrix; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Gene Davis officiating.

Tommy Gardo
Easley — Tommy Wayne Gardo, 72, husband of Rebecca Cope “Becky” Gardo, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2013 at Baptist Easley.
Mr. Gardo was born in Pickens County to the late Bob and Beatrice Marchbanks Gardo. He worked for Alice Manufacturing at the Ellison Plant for the majority of his life as a fixer, until his retirement. A member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church, Tommy belonged to the Auditorium Sunday School Class. He enjoyed taking trips to the mountains and working with wood in his spare time.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 52 years, are a son, Dennis Gardo (Traci) of Easley; a daughter, Nikki Diaz (Mitchell) of Easley; two brothers, Bud Gardo (Geneva) of Pelzer, and Jerry Gardo (Sue) of Easley; two sisters, Sarah Turner of Pickens, and Linda Garrison (Daniel) of Easley; four granddaughters, Kari and Kelli Gardo, and Emily and Zoey Diaz; and a special niece, Janice Turner.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Ellis G. West; and a grandson, Ethan Diaz
Funeral services were 2 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 23, at Jones Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Roger Couch officiating. Burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley.

Ella Jo Harvey
Easley — Ella Jo Alexander Harvey, 76, of 354 Oakvale Drive, died peacefully on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013 at her residence.
Born in Liberty she was a daughter of the late Louie and Dolly Nix Alexander. She worked at Saco Lowell and later worked for many years as a greeter at Wal-Mart. She loved spending time with family and cooking. She was a member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Jerry P. Harvey of the home; three daughters, Rita Gaillard (Bill), Melba Seawright (Wayne), and Sherry Van Hook (Mark) all of Easley; a son, Dale Harvey (Nichole) of Fountain Inn; two brothers, Clarence Alexander of Liberty, and Kenneth Alexander of Pickens; 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
