LUCY B. HARWARD

PICKENS — Lucy Eleanor Boozer Harward, 80, wife of Eston Dale Harward, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2019.

Lucy was born in Columbia, a daughter of the late Rev. Matthew Evans Boozer and the late Lucy Eleanor Waldrop Boozer. Lucy attended Margaret Booth Primary School, Montgomery, Ala. She received her bachelor’s degree from Columbia College, Columbia, S.C., and attended Emory University, Atlanta, Ga. She received her master’s degree from the University of Florida and her Ph.D. from Florida State University. For many years, Lucy taught in schools in Florida while her husband served as a United Methodist minister.

The Pickens Senior Center was very dear to her heart. Lucy founded the Fiber Arts Center at the senior center, where she taught fiber arts skills and actively volunteered. She was recognized many times for her quilts and designed the quilt square for the Pickens Doodle Trail and for the Pickens Senior Center. Mrs. Harward was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pickens.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, the Rev. E. Dale Harward; daughter, Lucinda “Cindy” Diane Rainey and her husband, Clifford Wesley Rainey Sr. of Alpharetta, Ga.; grandchildren, Clifford Wesley Rainey Jr. and his wife, Delaney Powers, of Woodstock, Ga., and Matthew Ethan Rainey of Kennesaw, Ga. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Bryan Powers and Eston Lane Rainey; and her sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Boozer Dalton (Betty), and brother, Mr. M. E. Boozer II (Butch).

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, at Grace United Methodist Church in Pickens, with close friend Lowell Teal speaking.

Following the service, the family will host a luncheon in the church fellowship hall.

The family has asked for flowers to be omitted and those desiring to make memorials to the Pickens Senior Center, 129 Schoolhouse St., Pickens, SC 29671.

LYNDA LEE HOLLIDAY

PICKENS — Lynda Lee Holliday, 77, born Oct. 31, 1941, went to be with her Lord on Monday, Oct. 14, 2019.

Born in Little Falls, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Homer M. Crowell and Laura M. Avery and wife of the late James H. Holliday.

Lynda worked mainly as a homemaker and with Pickens County schools as a library clerk. She attended Cannon Memorial Baptist Church in Central. Lynda was very fun-loving and outgoing. She loved her crafting, which included ceramics, cross-stitch, jewelry-making and also playing solitaire and working on her genealogy.

She leaves behind a son, Kevin Holliday (Lissa) of Westminster; and a daughter, Kimberly Holliday of Six Mile. Lynda’s extended family included a grandchild that she partially raised, Kevin Holliday II (Lakyn) and a number of loving grandchildren and adorable and precious great-grands.

Lynda was predeceased by a grandson, Seth Holliday and son-in-law, Richard T. Block.

A service was held at the Dillard Funeral Home chapel on Oct. 17. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

ROBERT TRABER

LIBERTY — Robert Lee Traber, 96, of 2041 Greenville Highway, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 14, 2019, at his home.

Born in Cornelia, Ga., he was a son of the late Henry and Cora Bell Gibson Traber. Robert owned and operated his own cabinet shop for 66 years, and also taught woodworking at the vocational school for many years. He loved wood crafts and sharing them with family and friends.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, and was a technician on the glider planes. Robert was a longtime member of Liberty First Baptist Church, the American Legion and was a 32-year board member for Easley Central Water District.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Martin Traber of the home; a sister, Dorothy Watt of Anderson; a brother, Marvin Traber of Mauldin; a special friend, Eddie Rackley of Liberty; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert Stanley Traber; four sisters, Martha Parker, Ruby Traber, Clara Holliday and Betty Jo Royce; and four brothers, Roy, Ernest, Clarence and Bruce Traber.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Traber were conducted on Oct. 17 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Private burial took place following the service.

FRANK BLACKWELDER

EASLEY — Rawlin Franklin (Frank) Blackwelder, 85, husband of Joan Billings Blackwelder, passed away on Friday, Oct. 18, 2019.

Born on June 28, 1934, in Cabarrus County, N.C., Mr. Blackwelder was a son of the late Everett Richard and Gertrude Johnston Blackwelder. He grew up in Harrisburg, N.C., and graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1952. He began working as a telegrapher for Southern Railway (later Norfolk Southern) while in high school and remained with the company until his retirement in 1990.

In 1966, he and his family relocated when he became a dispatcher in the railroad’s Greenville office. At the time of his retirement, he was an assistant superintendent. He served in the United States Army for two years, teaching cryptography classes. Mr. Blackwelder was a lifelong Presbyterian and had been a member of Easley Presbyterian Church since 1966.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Blackwelder was predeceased by a daughter, Julie Lavan Blackwelder. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan Billings Blackwelder of the home; and his daughter, Ingrid Blackwelder Erwin of Greenville. He is also survived by two sisters, Doris Blackwelder Poston of Concord, N.C., and Nancy Blackwelder Worsley of Wrightsville Beach, N.C.

Following a private burial, the memorial service was held on Oct. 21 at Easley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Bill Seel and the Rev. Dr. Christie Gravely officiating.

LUCY DODSON

PICKENS — Lucille “Lucy” P. Dodson went to be with her faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, Oct. 14, 2019. Lucy passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter surrounded by family and friends.

Born on April 15, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Payton and Susie Mae Powell. Though she worked most of her life as a seamstress, Lucy was primarily a homemaker. While she enjoyed sewing and painting, but her real love was for her family and Savior. Her family and friends found great delight in her clever humor and sharp wit, even as she lingered in her last illness.

She was the wife of the late Clyde F. Dodson; and the mother of Carolyn McNeely (Ron) of Greenville and Rhett Dodson (Theresa) of Hudson, Ohio. She was also the grandmother of Brent McNeely (Heather); and great-grandmother to Brendan (Jasmine), Colin, Dillon and Camryn McNeely, all of Greenville. She was predeceased by two sisters, Annie Lee Smith and Elewese Collins.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 22 at the Second Presbyterian Church, Greenville with the Rev. Dr. Rhett Dodson and the Rev. Dr. Richard Phillips officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

MARTHA ELLEN NEALY

PICKENS — Martha Ellen Nealy, 79, born May 29, 1940, went to be with her Lord on Oct. 19, 2019.

Born in New Hall, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Eugene Buchanan and Chrissie Wachob Buchanan and wife of the late Thomas H. Nealy.

Ellen was retired from Cornell Dubilier in Liberty. She was a faithful member of Secona Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Lady Sunshine Sunday School Class. Ellen enjoyed her reading, loved working in the yard including cutting her grass and she liked cooking her daughter’s favorite vegetable soup. Ellen volunteered her time at Cannon Memorial Hospital, covering the front desk.

She leaves behind a daughter, Jennifer Suddeth (Stuart) of Pickens; a brother-in-law, Oliver Nealy (Diane) of Pickens; and a sister-in-law, Sadie Lee (Wilton) of Pickens.

A graveside service will be held at the Hillcrest Memorial Park at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Interment will follow the service.

JOHN MORGAN

EASLEY — John Herman Morgan, 78, passed from this life on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019, in Greenville.

Mr. Morgan was born in Ohio, a son of the late Herman and Naomi Morgan and Ellis and Dorothy Marie Davis. He was retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service and later worked for Platt Saco Lowell, Alice Manufacturing and Milliken.

Survivors include his second wife, Ruby Johnson Morgan; daughters, Gina Acosta of Harriman, Tenn., Angela Morgan of Easley, Patricia Talbert of Gray Court and Donna Marie Buck (Ray) of Harriman, Tenn.; step-son, David Webb of Greenville; and brothers-in-law, Michael Paetrow and Thomas Paetrow. Also surviving are siblings, Harvey Morgan, Ellis Davis Jr., Judy Finley, Joe Davis, Charles Davis, Michael Davis, Bruce Davis, Doug Morgan, Jeanne Thomas and Richard Davis; grandchildren, Theodore, Martin, April, Jessy, Chris, Carlos, and Jose; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his first wife, Christa Gisela Berlejung Morgan; his son, Theodore Morgan; and siblings, Marcella Davis and Elmer Davis.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will greet friends and family following the service at the home.

DIANE RAMEY

EASLEY — Elizabeth Diane Chastain Ramey, 66, passed from this life on Friday, Oct. 18, 2019, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Diane was born in Easley, a daughter of Carlee and Mae Browning Chastain of Easley. She was retired from the Child Development Center of the First Baptist Church of Easley.

Diane was a member of Brushy Creek Baptist, where she was a member of the Abiding Hope Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her parents, Carlee and Mae Chastain of Easley; her daughter, Heather Ramey of Easley; and her son, Heath Ramey of Easley; sisters, Linda Wade of Easley, Patricia LaChance (Jeff) of Orlando, Fla., and Julie Hess of Easley; and brother, Mark Chastain (Nikki) of Piedmont. Also surviving are 12 nieces and nephews, 23 great-nieces and nephews and a great-great-niece, all of whom she considered to be her grandchildren.Diane was preceded in death by infant sons, Chad Eric and Kevin Mark Ramey.

A memorial service was held on Oct. 21 at Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Easley, with the Rev. Dr. Steven Wade officiating. Burial was held at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

BELLE ELLENBURG

LIBERTY — Lillie Belle Dalton Ellenburg, 69, of 117 Grapevine Lane, died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019, at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Norris, she was the wife of Bobby Joe “Tex” Ellenburg and a daughter of the late Arthur and Gladys Roper Dalton. She was retired from Bosch Automotive in Anderson and was of the Christian faith.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Joy Merck (Chris) of Easley; a son, Robert Bridges (Jennifer) of Pickens; three stepdaughters, Roni Seawright of Dacusville, Traci Bagwell of Pickens and Pam Brown of Iva; a stepson, Joey Ellenburg of Easley; and seven grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Brenda Riddle; and a brother, Junior Dalton.

Memorial services for Mrs. Ellenburg will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

PORTIS C. HUGHES

PICKENS — Portis C. Hughes went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday October 2, 2019.

He was born to the late Thomas and Pauline Hughes on Jan. 7, 1938.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Lois; and his wife, Clara Mae Hughes. He is survived by two brothers, Joe Frank Hughes and Brodie Hughes; and three sisters, Frances Riggins, Freddie Seaborn and Annette Smith.

Portis was laid to rest on Oct. 6 at the Oolenoy Baptist Church cemetery beside his beloved wife, Clara Mae. The Rev. Tommy Howard led the service, with music by Kendall Pitts.

CHRISTINE N. JULIAN

EASLEY -— Christine Nix Julian, 92, of Easley, wife of the late Cecil H. Julian, passed away Monday, October 21, 2019.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Reece Nix.

Mrs. Julian received her bachelor’s degree from Furman University and her masters degree from Clemson University. She was retired from the School District of Pickens County, having taught first grade at McKissick Elementary School. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church in Pickens.

Surviving are her children, Teresa Julian Tumbleston and Glenn L. Julian (Kathy), all of Easley; grandchildren, Christopher Tumbleston, Justin Julian, Trad Julian (Megan) and Kolbey Julian; great-grandchildren, Ida Julian and Nicholas Julian; sisters, Gladys Looper of Pickens and Brenda Walker of Seneca; and a brother, Clarence Nix of Pickens.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Lois Porter, Hazel Dodgens and Lillian Holcombe; and a brother, Calvin Nix.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at Mountain Grove Baptist Church, with burial to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Flowers will be accepted. The family will be at the home.
