SYBIL JEAN NICHOLS

LIBERTY — Sybil Jean Nichols, 69, wife of the late Arvel Kenneth Nichols, of 414 Odell Road, Liberty, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020, at her home.

A native of North Carolina, Mrs. Nichols was the daughter of the late Alfred and Ella Mae Kinsey Morgan. She was a member of Unity and Love Worship Center.

Mrs. Nichols is survived by her sons, William Nichols of Liberty and Billy Nichols (Kassie) of Seneca; daughters, Brittany Nichols and Morgan Nichols, both of Liberty; brothers, Tony Morgan (Cindy) of Pickens and Jim Morgan (Sheila) of Easley; sisters, Deborah Cheshire (Roy) of Hartwell, Ga., and Kathy Campbell of Seneca; grandchildren, Yyzabellahh Thomas, Marlee Nichols, Peyton Nichols, Blayze Howard and Maddux Howard; and a special niece, Shannon Hardenbrook.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Nichols was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jordan Nichols.

Funeral services were conducted on Oct. 27 at Mount Carmel No. 2 Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.

Flowers are accepted.

The family members are at their respective homes.

DONALD EDWARD HOWARD SR.

PICKENS — Donald Edward Howard Sr., 80, husband of Laura Ellison Howard, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020.

Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late John Tillman and Frances Dickard Howard. He retired from Roadway Express after 32 years as a driver salesman with a 2 million-plus safe driving record. Don was a 1957 graduate of Pickens High School. He was a member of Golden Creek Baptist Church, where he was a part of the Joy Group. Don was a 55-plus-year member of Easley Bates Masonic Lodge No. 189 and was a past volunteer at Baptist Easley Hospital, where he received the volunteer of the year award in 2006.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Laura Ellison Howard; sons, Eddie Howard of Easley and Tim Howard of Greenville; and grandchildren, Madison Howard of Potsdam, N.Y.. and Jacob Howard of Winston-Salem, N.C. He is also survived by three sisters and a brother.

Graveside services were held on Oct. 24 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

MATT OGLESBY

LIBERTY — Matthew Thomas Oglesby, 45, died on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020, at his home.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late James Thomas Oglesby.

He was a graduate of Easley High School and was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church.

Matt loved to hunt and fish, play the banjo and spend time with his family and friends.

Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Jane and Wendell Green of Greenville; a son, Hunter Oglesby of Liberty; a sister, Laura Oglesby Clark (Jessie) of Liberty; a niece, Kaiti Thomas (Logan) of Easley; a nephew, Dean Waldrop of Liberty; and two great-nephews, Asher and Lucas Thomas.

Memorial services to honor Matt’s life were conducted on Oct. 24 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel.

PICKENS — Billy Ray Parris, 57, husband of Bonnie Lee Whelan Parris, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, at his home.

Mr. Parris was the son of the late Mae Waters Parris and Gerald Parris.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years; one daughter, Alexis Cochran (Andrew) of Hendersonville, N.C.; one son, Kyle Parris of Greenville; one sister, Tina Ann Marie Popard (Rick) of Michigan; three brothers, Johnny Parris, Robbie Parris and Dean Parris (Joanie), all of Pickens; and three grandchildren, Easton, Emberlyn and Mason.

A graveside service was held on Oct. 23 at Sunrise Cemetery IN Pickens.

Mr. Parris was predeceased by his parents.

DALE L. HENDERSHOT

SENECA — Dale L. Hendershot, 91, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, Oct. 19, 2020.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel; two sons; one daughter; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one brother.

He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Seneca.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

SUSAN SHERIFF HOLCOMBE

EASLEY — Mrs. Susan Sheriff Holcombe, 65, wife of James Michael “Mike” Holcombe, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of Obera Gilstrap Sheriff of Easley and the late Thomas Austin Sheriff, Mrs. Holcombe was a graduate of Easley High School and later received her associate degree from Greenville Technical College. She was the co-owner and operator of Mike Holcombe’s Tire and Auto and a member of Rock Spring Baptist Church, where she served in the nursery department for more than 40 years.

Susan loved life and always had a smile on her face, but her greatest love was for her Lord, family, church and friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 44 years and her mother, are her son, Zachary James Holcombe of Easley; her daughter, Sarah Jordan “S.J.” Schwartz and her husband, Andrew, of Ft. Bragg, N.C.; a brother, Jerry Allen Sheriff of Greenville; three sisters, Sheila Fuller, Sherri Sheriff and Sharon Waldrop, all of Easley; and her beloved dog, Buddy.

In addition to her father, Mrs. Holcombe was predeceased by a brother, James Thomas “Jimmy” Sheriff.

Graveside services were held on Oct. 25 at the Rock Springs Baptist Church cemetery, with Rev. Dr. Stuart Houston officiating.

VIRGINIA K. BREAZEALE

EASLEY — Mrs. Virginia King Breazeale, 90, widow of the late Horace Dillon Breazeale, of Easley, died on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020, at her home.

The daughter of the late A.H. “Mose” and Esther Hendrix King, she was retired from Bank of America, where she worked in bookkeeping and customer service.

She was a 1947 graduate of Easley High School, where she was class secretary. A member of Arial Baptist Church for 88 years, she served as church pianist and Women’s Missionary Union director and taught the Grace Sunday school class. She was known as a prayer warrior, and when people would ask her to pray for them, she would say, “Let’s stop and pray right now,” and she loved to tell anyone she encountered, “I Love Jesus!” She was the oldest attending member of the church.

She is survived by three children, Greg Breazeale (Beverly) of Easley, Carol Johnson (Quay) of Travelers Rest and Thomas Breazeale (Carol) of Easley; four grandchildren, Katie Thomas (Brett) of Anderson, Airman First Class Thomas Breazeale of Warner Robins, Ga., and Luke and John Johnson of Travelers Rest; two great-grandchildren, Elisabeth and Wyatt Thomas of Anderson; and a sister, Sarah Masters of Easley.

She was predeceased by twin sons, Barry and Larry, who died shortly after birth; two brothers, A. Kendall King and Ray King, both of Easley; and a sister, Mabel King, also of Easley.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 25 at Arial Baptist Church. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

HARRY C. KAY

EASLEY — Mr. Harry C. Kay, 75, husband of Diane Murphy Kay, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020.

Born in Duval, Fla., he was a son of the late Curtis Kay Sr. and the late Cora Lee Neely Kay. Mr. Kay loved hunting and fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He retired from the city of Easley and was a member of Enon Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 26 years, are a son, Brad Kay of Easley; two grandchildren, Dalton and Belle Kay; two brothers, Harold Kay and Robert “Bud” Kay, both of Liberty; four sisters, Rosa Lee Hewey of Easley, and Barbara Marcus, Doris Kay and Nancy Rhodes, all of Liberty; a special niece and nephew, Mackenzie and Brantley “Little Buddy” Crawford; and a lifelong best friend, Billy Pelt.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Kay was predeceased by a brother, Curtis Kay Jr.

GAIL G. JAMESON

LIBERTY — Mrs. Linda Gail Galloway Jameson, 79, wife of Ross Arden Jameson, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020.

Born in Greenville County, the daughter of the late Lewis Galloway and the late Pauline Roberts Galloway, Mrs. Jameson received her associate degree from Draughn Business School and retired from Clemson University with more than 28 years of service. She was a member of Pendleton Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 47 years, are a son, Kerry Jameson of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; two daughters, Jill Kellett of Townville and Lauri Owens (Scott) of Inman; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jameson was predeceased by a brother, James H. Galloway.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial will follow at the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church cemetery.

PEGGY CHASTAIN

LIBERTY — Peggy Myers Chastain, 72, died on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Butler, N.J., she was a daughter of the late James and Catherine Myers.

Ms. Chastain was a homemaker and a member of Liberty Church of God. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, spending time with her family and especially the Atlanta Braves.

Surviving are her daughter, Kaye Thomas (Rev. Jason) of Liberty; three sons, Chuck Chastain of Easley, Tommy Chastain (Sonya) of Easley and Kenny Chastain (Tracy) of Morganton, N.C.; a brother, James Myers of Charleston, W.Va.; a sister, Margaret Myron of Sebastian, Fla.; six grandchildren, Jordan Cumbee (Jared), Erin Dunham (Charlie), Noah Thomas, Eli Thomas, Asher Chastain and Kaylee Chastain; and her former husband and friend, Charles Chastain.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, two brothers and three grandchildren.

Memorial services to honor the life of Ms. Chastain were conducted on Oct. 27 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel by Rev. Jason Thomas.

BRETT FOSTER TINSLEY

PICKENS — Brett Foster Tinsley, 56, father, son, brother and friend, left this world of pain and suffering on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020.

Brett loved his family and many friends. He was a fun-loving boy who loved all things “Ball.” He played all types of sports, but football was his favorite.

Brett also had a love for the great outdoors, fishing, hunting, motorcycles and fast cars. He made memories with his friends that will be remembered and talked about for lifetimes.

In 2000, Brett’s dream came true when he became a father to two beautiful girls, Olivia and Rachel, who were the light of his life. They were his Sunshine, as he would sing to them for hours at a time when they were babies.

Surviving are daughters, Olivia Dayne Tinsley and Rachel Elizabeth Tinsley of the home; mother, Glenda Knight Tinsley of Easley; a brother, Russ Tinsley (Cindy) of Pickens; and a sister, Laura Tinsley of Charleston.

Friends and loved ones, take more pictures, make more memories and love a little harder. Always say I love you and never leave a room angry. We aren’t promised tomorrow. Celebrate life every day, as we will celebrate Brett. A private memorial will be at a later date.

EASLEY — Gladys Holcombe Adams, 92, wife of the late Homer Adams, formerly of Greenville’s Woodside mill village, passed away on Oct. 20, 2020.

Gladys was a member of Woodside Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Lavonda Bay of Easley; grandchildren, Scott Ravan of Greenville and Jennifer Reynolds (James) of Houlka, Miss.; great-grandchildren, Kevin Ravan (Kirstin) and Paige Collins; three step-great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Breazeale (James).

Gladys was predeceased by her husband; her parents, Albert and Roxie McCall Holcombe; a step-great-granddaughter; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions, the family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

EASLEY — Martha Hughes Davis, 90, wife of the late J.D. Davis, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020.

Mrs. Davis was the daughter of the late Annie Mae Fowler Hughes and James Oliver Hughes.

Survivors include three daughters, Becky Evatt (Donnie), Jeanne Gillespie (Ben) and Lynn Powers (Mark), all of Easley; one son, Ben Davis of Easley; one sister, Karen Finley (Ernest) of Hampton, Ga.; five grandchildren, Melissa Cribb (Alan), Brandi Lackey (Dustee), Adam Powers (Crystal), Jessica Davis and James Davis; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Davis was predeceased by her parents, husband, one son, Jeff Davis; and three grandchildren, Amanda Gillespie, Keri Gillespie and Donald Evatt Jr.

A graveside service was held on Oct. 23 at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

COLUMBIA — Joe Luther Evett, 67, resident of Richland County, passed away on Friday, Oct. 16, 2020.

Mr. Evett was born on Dec. 9, 1952, to Nathan and Gladys Walker Evett.

Mr. Evett was in the U.S. Army and retired from Wisconsin Airlines in Columbia. He most recently was a school bus driver for Richland County Schools. He was a member of Icon Church.

Mr. Evett is survived by his wife, Mary E. Evett; four children, Tonia Evett, Travis Pauling, Zandra Evett and Erica Manning; nine grandchildren, Mercedes Parham, Kirby Parham, Myranda Parham, Eyana Floyd, Emasia Floyd, Elijah Joe Evett, Devon Lopez, Jayden Harmon and Savanna Manning; two great-grandchildren, Kylie Parham and Kaedyn Henderson; five brothers, David (Mary), Clark (Kathryn), Darrell (Liz), Michael (Johnetta) and Alton (Debra) Evett; and eight sisters, Hazel Walker, Janice (Greg) Grant, Henrietta Johnson, Patricia (Calvin) Grant, Gail (Rodney) Hunter, Harriett Steele, Lois Johnson and Edna Reid.

Mr. Evett was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Essie Mae Roosevelt, Lizzie, Catherine, Nathan Jr., Alice Jean, Pearl, Claude, Horace and James.

Pallbearers included Elijah Evett, Devon Lopez, Kirby Parham, Jayden Harmon, Deion Grant, Sterling Brown and Carlton Greenlee.

Flower girls included Myranda Parham, Mercedes Parham, Latoya Evett, Chastity Evett and Nadia Wingard.

The officiating minister was Tim Lipsey of Encounter Church in Gaffney.

Graveside service was held at Heritage Memorial Gardens in Westminster on Oct. 24, with military honors.

ANN BURNS BECKNELL

LIBERTY — Ann Burns Becknell, 67, wife of the late Wallace D. Becknell, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 19, 2020.

Born in Liberty, Ann was a daughter of the late Styles Burns Sr. and the late Phoebe Owens Burns. She worked as a cloth inspector at Alice Manufacturing Company.

Ann was of the Christian faith and loved telling everyone about the blessings in life that God provided for her.

She enjoyed praising God and praying for others. She enjoyed spending time with her family, laughing and always wearing a smile on her face.

She was a loving mother, Nana, sister and friend. Ann enjoyed coloring and playing with toys with her grandson and always said that he was the “light of my life” and her “shining star.”

Ann was survived by a son, Christopher Becknell of Liberty; a daughter, Tracy Bridges (Bradley) of Easley; a sister, Brenda Holliday of Easley; and a grandson, Weston Bridges.

In addition to her loving husband, she was predeceased by nine siblings, Sarah Simmons, Wayne Burns, Ronnie Burns, Alvin Burns, Styles Burns Jr., Tommy Burns, Eugene Burns, Charles Burns and Jimmy Burns.
