PATRICIA ANNE ROBERTS RUTLEDGE

EASLEY — Patricia Anne Roberts Rutledge, 87, died peacefully at The Foothills of Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina in Easley.

“Pat” was born May 18, 1937, at the University of Virginia Hospital inCharlottesville, Va. She was raised in Schuyler, Va., by parents Emmett Samuel Roberts and Myrtle Saunders Roberts.

She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Broaddus L. Rutledge II.

She is survived by her dear sister, Brenda Roberts Graham.

She was the mother of Cynthia O’Donoghue (Martin), John Rutledge (Betty Starr) and Scott Rutledge (Nancy). Pat was the proud grandmother to Taylor, Peyton, Kathryn (Jack), Matthew and William (Valentina). Pat had one great-grandchild, Gisele.

Pat graduated as valedictorian from Schuyler High School in 1954. She attended Mary Washington University for her prerequisite nursing credentials prior to entering the School of Nursing at the University of Virginia, where she received her Bachelor of Science in nursing in May 1959. Pat maintained a strong bond with her college nursing friends, affectionately named “The Pearls.” Pat worked at the University of Virginia Hospital, where she also served as an instructor in the School of Nursing. One of Pat’s proud achievements was her 2009 recognition as a 50-year member of the Thomas Jefferson Society of Alumni.

When the Rutledge family relocated to Clemson in 1979, Pat continued her nursing career as director of in-service education at Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca. Upon her retirement in 1995, Pat provided adjunct teaching support to Tri-County Technical College’s nursing program.

Pat was engaged with her community serving as a committee member for Clemson Community Center, a den mother for Cub Scouts, among other contributions.

Pat was a member of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson. She was active in the Women’s Circle and served as secretary of the Circle and Women’s Council. She also volunteered as a welcomer for the Fort Hill Greeting Office (FHOG).

In her free time, Pat enjoyed many traveling adventures with her church. She enjoyed knitting, solitaire and sudoku, but loved nothing more than a great book.

She spent many fall weekends preparing tailgates for family and friends attending the Clemson Tiger football games. However, she was always a Virginia Cavalier and thus, a lifelong UVA basketball fan.

Pat greatly valued her family and friends. She made many cherished friendships in every place she lived, including Charlottesville, Va., Danville, Va., and Clemson.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made in Pat’s name to either Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, Clemson or The Foothills Retirement Community in Easley. The family is planning a private service and burial at Monticello Memory Gardens in Charlottesville, Va.

MARK DUANE HAWKINS

PICKENS — Mark Duane Hawkins, 60, of Pickens, passed away at his home on Feb. 8, 2025.

Mark was the son of the late Charles Frank Hawkins and Bobby Sue Ellenburg Hawkins.

Mark was an all-around great guy and a true friend. He did not make trouble with anyone and took care of those he could. He loved his friends and enjoyed making Christmas ornaments. Mark was a Christian who recently found the Lord.

Mark is survived by his siblings, Chuck Hawkins (Ann) of Simpsonville, Terry Hawkins (Nancy) of Pumpkintown, C.F. Hawkins (Rusty) of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Sherry West (Terry) of Murfreesboro, Tenn., best friends, Frankie Patterson, Bonnie Bagwell, Barbara Hammond, Gary Newsome, Heather Rochester, Joe Melba and Cassie Patterson; along with many nieces and nephews.

Mark was predeceased by his parents and brother, Allen Hawkins.

A memorial service honoring the life of Mark Hawkins will be held at a later date.

JUDITH JOANNA MATHIS FOWLER

PICKENS — The death of Judith Joanna Mathis Fowler, 79, of Pickens, native of Haywood County North Carolina died on February 21, 2025. Judy was the daughter of Virginia Mathis and John Mathis and was married to the late Ernest Lynn Fowler for 45 years. She resided with her youngest daughter, Marlanea Fowler, and husband, Stacy Collins.

She is survived by her oldest daughter Shirley Rogers of S.C. Her grandchildren Justin Dies, Tabitha Foster, Mark Rogers and Tommy Rogers. She also spent years loving her great grandchildren Stella Dies and Braylin Gerrish. Also, outlived by many loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will grieve dearly.

Judy was a smart, giving, and beautiful woman who enjoyed her family, traveling, scientific wonders, TV and coloring. Her favorite TV channels were SyFy, National Geographic channel, and watching TikTok and Youtube. She loved watching her birds and squrriels on the porch with always a cup of coffee in her hand. She has visited Yellow Stone, the Wild West, and has traveled many other locations across the United States where she left her mark as well as in the hearts of the family and friends she has left behind to explore the beyond.

She wanted her legacy to be left with those who were affected by flooding from recent events in Virgina. In lieu of flowers all proceeds go to Hillcrest Baptist Church Mission Team for West Virginia myhillcrest.org or 1300 Anderson Drive Williamston 29697.

BARBARA ELAINE  ‘KIST’ DOOLEY

PICKENS — Barbara Elaine “Kist” Dooley Wife, Daughter, Mother, Oma, Outfitter of Men, Gone at 81.

Barbara died quietly on a Sunday, February 16, 2025, at home in Pickens, with her family close. It was where she wanted to be.

She was a force that could run a household, rear four busy boys, balance a checkbook, and sell stubborn men a new tie before noon.

Born in Hillsdale, N.J., to the late Eleanor and Richard Kist, Barbara grew up with the virtues of hard work and common sense. Penn State, Class of 1965, sharpened her mind. Chuck Dooley captured her heart. She found the love of her life, wasted no time, and married him on graduation day.

Military life brought them to Germany, Thailand, and back to New Jersey where, in 1970, Barbara found her calling at Stern’s Department Store, Men’s Furnishings.

In 2010, Chuck and Barbara retired to Pickens, where she poured her energy into the YMCA and church, and co-founded the Upstate Parkinson’s Society Support Group.

Her faith was Lutheran, and she lived through God’s grace with quiet determination, laughter, and grit. Barbara was well-traveled, an avid reader, and loved puzzling and playing games with her family, including Chuck, her husband of 60 years, and their sons Jeffrey (Carole) in N.Y., Scott (Sabina) in Va., Brian (Dawn) in S.C., Sean (Lucienne) in Pa. Her grandchildren include Conner (Mao) in Japan, Sara (Sheridan) in Colo., Katherine in Mass., Jackson in S.C., Chiara, Autumn and Fiona in Pa.

Barbara was predeceased by her brother, Frederick Kist. Still with us are her nephew Richard and her sister-in-law, Anne.

Barbara’s celebration of life will be held on March 1, 12:30 p.m., at Dillard Memorial Funeral Home, 2402 Gentry Memorial Highway, Pickens. Visitation begins at 11 a.m.

STEPHEN JAMES HORNE

CENTRAL — Mr. Stephen “Steve” James Horne, 78, husband of the late Joani Tara Horne, passed away Monday, February 17, 2025.

Born in Conn., a son of the late George Perly Horne and the late Edna Myrtle Adamson Horne, Mr. Horne was a retired Nuclear Quality Control Engineer and was a member of Freedom Fellowship Church. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served in the Vietnam War.

Steve was very outgoing and loved to meet new people. He was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need, and adored his family. He will be dearly missed by all that loved and knew him.

Surviving are his two daughters, Angela Allen (Mark) of Central and Wendy McClellan (Hugh) of Easley; his brother, Daniel Horne of Conn.; his nieces, Elizabeth Michelle Horne Exias and Tamar Marie Dupre’; his grandchildren, Zachary Allen (Cayla), Stephanie Thompson and Chad Stone (Marie); and his great- grandchildren, Abel Allen, Allie Allen, McKenzie Stone and William Stone. In addition to his wife and parents, Steve was predeceased by a grandson, Cory Stone.

The family will host a Celebration of Life to be announced at a later date.

STEVEN KENDAL EDWARDS

EASLEY — Steven Kendal Edwards, 55, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 4, 1969, in Greenville County, Steven was the son of Bill Edwards and Peggy Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a warrior and a very hard-working man. He enjoyed fishing and playing video games. He loved football and was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Edwards is survived by a daughter, Mackenzie Edwards of Easley; a son, Chris Edwards of Easley; a niece, Holly Menendez; two nephews, Corey Edwards and Brandon Edwards; and four great-nephews, Joseph, Carson, Colton and Xander.

Mr. Edwards was predeceased by a brother, Derek Edwards.

Celebration of life took place on Feb. 24, at the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens.

NOEL JONES

EASLEY — Mr. Noel Edward Jones, 81, husband of Brenda Stegall Jones and the late Carolyn Kirby Jones, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2025.

Born in Flat Rock, N.C., a son of the late Duer William Jones and the late Agnes Geneva Hoots Jones, Mr. Jones was a retired truck driver with U.S. Foods and was a US Navy Veteran having served.

Noel was always willing to lend a helping hand to others. He loved the outdoors and listening to music, but his greatest love was his everyday morning visits to the Waffle House with family and friends.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his step-son, Reuben Stegall of Easley; his step-daughter, Angie Stegall of Easley; a brother, Vincent Jones of Hendersonville; his sister-in-law, Elaine Tabor (Kenneth) of Hendersonville; his step-granddaughter, Michaela Goggins; and his step-great-granddaughter, Inza April Rose Goggins. In addition to his first wife and parents, Mr. Jones was predeceased by nine brothers and one sister.

Graveside services took place on Feb. 10, at Wood Memorial Gardens, Greer.

JAMES RAY  ‘JIMMY’ GODFREY JR

LIBERTY — James Ray Godfrey Jr., 82, of Liberty, passed away on February 19, 2025.

He was born on April 4, 1942 to James Ray Godfrey, Sr. and Ruth King Godfrey. He proudly served his country in the US Navy for 18 years, from which he was medically discharged. He went on to work as an industrial maintenance mechanic for Cryvac until he retired. He was on the board of directors for Lupus Foundation, a member of the American Legion Post 52, and a lifetime member of the Shangri-La Association. He was also a member of Carolina Community Church. Most of all, he loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

James is survived by his son, James Ray Godfrey III “Jim” (Sandra) of Easley; his grandchildren, James Ray Godfrey IV (Dawn) of Idaho, Amanda Godfrey Timmons (Robert) of Marietta, Elijah Godfrey and Abigail Godfrey; his great-grandchildren, Alyssa Mae Timmons, Wyatt Earl Timmons, Timothy Godfrey and James Ray Godfrey V; his brother, Darrell Glenn Godfrey (Pam) of Columbia; his beloved friends, Patrick McCullough, Corey Maness, Matthew Owens, Dale Simmons, Nathan Church (Catrina), Moe Christopher (Teresa), Patricia Porter and Brenda Grammas; and his very special fiancee, Juanita Revis.

He is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Judy Cantrell Godfrey; his son, George Mackey Godfrey; and his brother, David Lynn Godfrey.

PICKENS — Charles Calvin Brock Sr, 74, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2025. He was the son of the late Grady Calvin Brock and Edna Brock, and the loving husband to the late Martha Mot Brock.

Charles was a member of Griffin Baptist Church and worked with the children’s department for years. He enjoyed gardening, taking care of his goats, and spending time with his wife.

Charles is survived by son; Charlie Brock (Michelle) of Pendleton; daughter, Tonya Denise Dixon (Geoffrey) of Charleston; siblings, Thomas Eugene Brock of Pendleton, Evelyn Virginia Medlin (John) of Six Mile, Barbara Entrekin (Lamar) of Central, Alma B. Rollins (Marion) of Central,; grandchildren, Amanda Bailey, Ashton Brock (Kelsey), Kevin Hendricks, Dalton Brock, Macy Brock, Molly Brock and Kennedy Brooke Hendricks; great grandchildren, Remington Hendricks, Hattie Grace Brock and James Emory Brock.

Charles is predeceased by his wife Martha Mot Brock; parents, Grady Calvin and Edna Brock; and brother, Edward Harper Brock.

The family will receive friends on March 1, at Griffin Baptist Church from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. with a celebration of life to follow at 2 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow at Griffin Baptist Church Cemetery. A warm thank you to all who showed kindness and love to him.

PICKENS — Charles Calvin Brock Sr., 74, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025.

He was the son of the late Grady Calvin Brock and Edna Brock, and the loving husband to the late Martha Mot Brock.

Charles was a member of Griffin Baptist Church and worked with the children’s department for years. He enjoyed gardening, taking care of his goats and spending time with his wife.

CARROLL GRAVLEY

ANDERSON — It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Walter Carroll Gravley, who left us on February 24, 2025, at the age of 88.

Born on March 11, 1936, in Liberty, he was the widower of Louise R. Gravley and a son of the late Walter Carey Gravley and the Lillie Gravley Bryant.

He lived a life filled with service and dedication. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Technical Sergeant after two decades of committed service.  During his time in the military, he served during the Vietnam War.

His hard work didn’t stop there; he later joined Duke Energy as a Nuclear Maintenance Engineer, where he continued to make a difference in the energy production industry until his retirement.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children; Cyndi Ellis (Ray), Michael Gravley, Jimmy Laney, Richard Laney, Bobby Laney and Cathy Laney who carry on his legacy of resilience and kindness.  Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Shelby Jean Gravley; a daughter, Rhonda Moore; a brother, Mac Gravley and four sisters; Louise Harrison, Martha Pace, Avanelle Gaunce and Faye Sanders.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Feb. 27, in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel.  Burial with full military honors will follow the service at Liberty Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5 p.m. until 7 pm.
