Central — Ruth Watson Owen died on March 6, 2015.

She was born on May 30, 1923, to the late Leo Woody Benjamin and Sallie Brown Watson. She worked at Morris and Co. in Pickens for 30 years. She attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Central.

Ruth is survived by her niece Rhonda Barton (Johnny) and her niece Gayle Thurn (Brad), along with many other family members and friends.

Ruth was predeceased by her beloved husband William Clinton “Clint” Owen and her brother Grady Watson.

The funeral service was held at noon on Monday, March 9, at Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Martha Ann Davis

Pickens — Martha Ann Madden Davis, 71, widow of the late Fred Davis, died Wednesday, March 11, 2015.

Mrs. Davis was born in Oconee County, a daughter of the late Verner and Mamie Madden. She was a homemaker and retired from the School District of Pickens County as a bus driver after 30 years of service.

Survivors include her son, Michael Joseph Davis (Rebecca) of Easley, her daughters, Deborah Murphy (Ken) of Easley, Janice Parsons of Simpsonville, Carol Blackburn of Pickens, and Rachel Pace (Dan) of Greer and grandchildren, Derek Parsons, Ashlee Murphy, Alexis Murphy, Morgan Blackburn, Cross Davis, Grace Davis, Isla Pace, and Erin Pace. Also surviving is a sister, Vernell Lusk of Salem and brothers, Donnie Madden and Robert Madden both of Easley.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by siblings, Jack Madden, Mary Lee, Joe Madden, Leroy Madden and Ronnie Madden.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 13, in the mausoleum chapel at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Dennis Bagwell

Sunset — Harold Dennis Bagwell, 54, husband of Cynthia Kay Adams Bagwell, died Wednesday, March 11, 2015.

He was born in Easley, a son of Harold E. Bagwell of Slabtown and Lucille Stewart Bagwell of Pickens. He was retired from the U.S. Navy. Following his Navy service, Dennis went to work for Lockheed and later Flour in Greenville.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Kay Adams Bagwell of the home, sons, Chris Bagwell (Rhonda) of Pickens, and David Bagwell of Powdersville, and a daughter, Tonya Feno (Randall) of Pickens and 10 grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, Jerry Bagwell (Penny) and Jeff Bagwell all of Pickens.

Dennis was preceded in death by a grandson, Randall Feno, III.

Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 14, in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed with full military honors at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Richard Thomas Sr.

Easley — Richard S. Thomas Sr., 74, of Rivers Edge Drive, passed away Friday, March 13, 2015, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Union City, Pa., a son of the late Ralph and Ruth May Hanna Thomas, Mr. Thomas retired from Sears after 31 years of service. He was of the Methodist faith and served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Karen Henderson Thomas; also a son, Richard S. Thomas Jr., of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Kristiana Simmerman of Liberty, and Kelly Blitch of Summerville; a brother, Daniel Thomas of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Donna Corbett of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Susan Steinberg of Boca Raton, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Thomas was formerly from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

Carl Williams

Easley — Carl Williams, 80, of Earls Bridge Road, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2015 at his home.

Born in Greenville County, a son of the late Thomas C. and Carrie Renner Williams, Mr. Williams retired from the engineering department of Milligan Corp., and was a member of Nine Forks Baptist Church. He was a former volunteer and first fire chief of the Dacusville Fire Department and a member of the Dacusville Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Margie McKittrick Williams of the home; two sons, Johnny T. Williams of Greenville and Jim Williams (Debra) of Travelers Rest; a daughter, Barbara Michael (Danny) of Easley; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Williams was predeceased by four sisters, Bessie James, Ethel Kanipe, Lois Hicks and Myrtle Robertson, a brother, T.C. Williams and by a granddaughter, Amanda Williams.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Nine Forks Baptist Church Cemetery.

Gladys Moore Smith

Central — Gladys Moore Smith, 96, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2015, at Pardee Memorial Hospital in Hendersonville, N.C.

Mrs. Smith was born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Duard L. and Rosa Madden Moore and wife of the late Ted Smith.

She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sister, Elizabeth Bergt of Las Vegas, and her sister-in-law Imogene Moore of Central.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her brothers, Horace and Leland Moore.

Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. on March 15 at Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Frances Hendricks

Six Mile — Sarah Frances Dodgens Hendricks, 82, of 109 Toby Hills Road, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Lila Doyle Nursing Center in Seneca.

Born in Pickens, she was a daughter of the late Furman and Dolly Beatrice Leslie Dodgens. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She formerly worked at Garrett’s Department Store in Clemson and was a member of King’s Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Holder of Six Mile; a son, Bill Hendricks (Marlene) of Salem; two brothers, Wayne Dodgens of Slab Town and Van Dodgens of Six Mile; three grandchildren, The Rev. Joel Hendricks, Jeremy Holder and Brandon Hendricks; and seven great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son in law, Jerry Holder; three sisters; and seven brothers.

Funeral services to honor the life of Ms. Hendricks were held Monday at 2 p.m. at King’s Grove Baptist Church.

Alline S. Gilstrap

Pickens — Alline Stansell Gilstrap, 90, wife of the late Hovey O’Neal Gilstrap, passed from this life on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Mrs. Gilstrap was born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Larry and Josie Holcombe Stansell. She was retired from Mayfair Mills’ Pickens Plant as a cloth inspector and was a member of Midway Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, David R. Gilstrap (Audrey) of Pickens, and her daughters, Carol Gravely (Bobby Joe) of Sunset, and Linda McKinney (Jim) of Pickens, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, and her brother, Willie Stansell of Pickens.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Gilstrap was preceded in death by a son, Dwight O’Neal Gilstrap, a sister, Christine Childress, and brothers, James Stansell and Ferber Stansell.

The family received friends on Tuesday, March 17, at Dillard Funeral Home, with funeral services following in the funeral home chapel. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Sheliah Hendrix

Pickens — Sheliah Annette Bryant Hendrix, 58, of 104 Cando Lane passed away peacefully Sunday, March 15, 2015, at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Easley, she was a daughter of the late Heyward J. and Sammie Jo Chapman Bryant. She was a member of Calumet Baptist Church.

Surviving are her stepmother, Frankie Bryant of Liberty; three daughters, Crystal Cox of Easley and Jessica and Samantha Hendrix both of the home; three sisters, Lynne Cornwell of Richmond, Texas, Kim DeGranda of Greer and Pamela Bryant of Liberty; a brother, Keith Bryant of North; two stepbrothers, Ron and Eddie Roach, both of Pickens; and seven grandchildren, Cassie Reece, Kenzie and Lucas Elrod, Brooklyn Hendrix, Olivia and Abigail Bates and Kingston McGowens.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel.

The family will be at their respective homes.

William A. O’Donald

Pickens — William Albert O’Donald, 87, husband of Louella Hayes Talley O’Donald, passed from this life on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at his home.

Mr. O’Donald was born in Banks County, Ga., a son of the late Joseph I. and Allie Mae Patton O’Donald. He was a retired supervisor with The Singer Company in Pickens and he was of the Baptist faith. Mr. O’Donald was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. O’Donald was twice married, first to the late Millie Powell O’Donald.

Survivors include his wife Louella O’Donald of the home, sons, Joseph F. O’Donald (Karen) of Atlanta and Alan L. O’Donald (Maxine) of Iva and Eddie Talley (Emma) of Easley, daughter, Wanda Duncan (Freddie) of Pickens. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, sisters, Eulah Hall of Six Mile, Annie Lee Cox of Easley, Martha Aiken of Easley, and Annette Freeman of Easley, and a brother, Louis O’Donald.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Mr. O’Donald was preceded in death by sisters, Pearl Gray and Beulah Crumpton.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, March 17, in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Shirley J. White

Pickens — Shirley Jeanine White, 40, daughter of Curtis B. White and the late Catherine Todd White, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2015, at Majesty Health and Rehab.

Surviving, in addition to her father, are a son, Jonathan Curtis Waters of Tennessee; three brothers, Edward C. White (Rachel) of Pickens, Tommy J. White (Margot) of Texas, and James L. White (Patricia) of Anderson; and three sisters, Rose Gosnell (Keith) of Marietta, Laura Lee Loveless (Tony) of Washington, and Cindy Gray (Jimmy) of Louisiana. In addition to her mother, Shirley was predeceased by a sister, Edna Sue White.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, in the Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Pickens.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside.

Albert Boone

Easley ­— Albert Griggs Boone Sr., 79, of Easley, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2015, at his home.

Born in Pageland, a son of the late Duncan and Kissie Mae Moree Boone, Mr. Boone was a retired co-owner of Nulife Environmental and a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Gail Seymore Boone of the home; a son, Robert Morrison “Bobby” Boone (Phyllis) of Davidson, N.C.; two daughters, Saundra Boone McAnulty (Marvin) of Indian Land, and Anita Alverson (Benny) of Easley; five grandchildren, Paul Adams, B.J. Boone, Rachel Hudnall, Ashley Moss and Blake Stewart. In addition to his parents, Mr. Boone was predeceased by a son, Albert Griggs Boone, Jr., and by five brothers and three sisters.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

The family will be at the residence.

James R. “Jim” Whitlock

Liberty — James Robert Whitlock, 84, of Liberty, son of the late William Robert and Mary Frances Summey Whitlock, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 16, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 59 years, Zoe Kelley Whitlock, a daughter, Kelley Whitlock Norwine and her husband, Doug, grandsons Casey and Alex Whitlock (Tyra), one great-grandson, Cooper Whitlock, sisters Ida Nix, Alta Murrell, Wanda Norton, and Frances Hamlin, a daughter-in-law, Julie Whitlock, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a son, Christopher Neill.

Known as “Big Jim,” “Jimbo” or “Papa Jim” to many, Jim was the owner/operator of Whitlock Electrical Contracting for 30 years until he retired for medical reasons in 1990. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, where he was responsible for flying with confidential documents all around the world, and was a longtime member of Flat Rock Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities such as Sunday school teacher, RA leader, choir member, deacon, and director of Training Union.

He was proud to be a member of the “Table of Knowledge” at Yank’s Place in Liberty, where he and the guys would sit, drink coffee and solve the world’s problems. The family would like to send a special thanks to the employees and patrons of Yank’s who always took such great care of him.

Jim loved to garden, and many neighbors and family members were the recipients of his handiwork. Hardly a day passed that you wouldn’t catch him watching his favorite television shows, such as The Andy Griffith Show, Gunsmoke and Bonanza. Jim grew up during a time where life was simple, friends were close, business deals were consummated with a handshake and his family and relationship with God were everything.

Funeral services to honor Mr. Whitlock’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Flat Rock Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior the service at the church.

Flowers will be accepted, however, the family humbly requests that donations be made to Flat Rock Baptist Church Endowment Fund, 115 Slab Bridge Road, Liberty, SC, 29657, or to Anderson University’s Johnny Mann Center for Commercial Music, 316 Boulevard, Anderson, SC 29621.
