Patricia H. Lockaby

Easley — Patricia Ann Hughes Lockaby, 82, of Easley, wife of James Edward Lockaby, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017.

Born in Liberty, she was a daughter of the late Connie Roy “Con” Hughes and Blanche Hughes Hughes.

Mrs. Lockaby was retired from the Quilt Gallery in Easley and was previously employed with Swirl Incorporated for more than 20 years. She loved her Lord, her husband and her family and enjoyed sewing. She was a member of United Wesleyan Church and the adult Sunday school class.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 58 years, are two daughters, Gloria Elaine Parker (Sammy) of Easley and Nancy Grace Evatt of Greenville; a sister, Nancy Lois Shulik of Pickens; and two brothers, Leroy Hughes of Easley and Samuel Hughes of Piedmont.

Funeral services were held March 3 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the building fund of United Wesleyan Church, 738 Rice Road, Easley, SC 29640.

Nicole Merrifield

Liberty — Nicole Merrifield was born Carol Elizabeth Theis on Nov. 28, 1943, in Chicago, Ill.

The youngest of three sisters, she studied theatre and literature in New York City. Nicole was a world traveler who, with her husband, made Liberty her home in 1999. She had a deep love for nature, a wonderful sense of humor, an eye for a bargain and a great appreciation for the art of a home cooked meal.

Nicole suffered from bipolar disease and its effects on her family throughout her life. In midlife, she came to know Jesus Christ as her personal savior and took great joy and comfort in his loving promise of an eternal life with him in Heaven.

Nicole is survived by her husband, Edgar Bartholomew Merrifield; her sisters, Lori Pierce and Kathy Lazano of Liberty; her children, Moriah C. Merrifield, V. Eliott Umphrey and Gabrielle U. Mottern; six grandchildren and one great-grand-baby.

Barbara Snelson

Pickens — Barbara Maureen Newman Snelson, 81, of Pickens, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, Feb. 27, 2017.

Born on June 21, 1935, in Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late George Johnson and Lucile Ruth Thurmond Newman. Barbara enjoyed camping with her husband, stamp and coin collecting, and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Ralph Thomas Snelson, Jr.; two children, Ralph “Tommy” Snelson, III (Robin) and Marissa Melsh; one sister Margaret Cater (Roger); one sister-in-law, Veronica Newman; nine grandchildren, Jason Hendricks (Lisa), Ashley Burt (David), Eric (Joy), Zachary, Caleb, Hannah, and Isaac Snelson, and Alicia and Van Massingill; four great-grandchildren, Angelina and Avie Marshall, and Zane and Blake Snelson, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Barbara was also predeceased by one daughter, Judy DeClue and two brothers, Larry and Richard Newman.

Graveside services were held March 2 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Ellen Gilbert

Liberty — Ellen Gilbert, 84, of Liberty, the wife of the late Aldon L. “Bud” Gilbert, passed from this life on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, peacefully at her home.

Mrs. Gilbert is the daughter of the late Fred Oglesby and Bonnie Oglesby and was born in Pickens County.

Mrs. Gilbert retired from Saco Lowell as a secretary and was a member of Easley Church of God.

Survivors include four sons Aldon L. Gilbert Jr. (Marie) of Liberty, Fred Gilbert (Dawn) of Easley, Eddie Gilbert of Liberty, Ernest Gilbert (Shirley) of Easley; one daughter Tina Payton (Mike) of Liberty; two sisters Joanne Pike (Bruce) of Simpsonville, Louise Lyda of Easley; one brother Fred Oglesby of Easley; and two sisters in law Alma Fortner of Anderson and Edith Durham (Wayne) of Easley. Mrs. Gilbert leaves 23 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren to share in her memory. Mrs. Gilbert is predeceased by three sisters, Jessie Mae Posey, Emma Bridges, and Lenora Oglesby.

Services were held March 3 in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel.

Kenneth Coley Clardy

Liberty — Kenneth Coley Clardy, 80, husband of Dorothy Ann Knight Clardy, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017.

Mr. Clardy was born in Liberty, the son of the late Eunice Christine Owens Clardy and Colie Lee Clardy.

Mr. Clardy was a faithful member of Liberty Church of God for 70 years, where he served as the church custodian for 42 years. He enjoyed working in his yard and worked at Woodside Mills for 50 years. He loved his wife and family dearly and never met a stranger. Mr. Clardy had a true servant’s heart.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years; two sons, Randy Clardy of Pendleton and Greg Clardy (Ann) of Liberty; three sisters, JoAnn McKee (Roy) of Mauldin, Jane Kay (David) of Mauldin and Barbara Rampey (Larry) of Liberty; two brothers, W.C. “Skeeter” Clardy (Mary) of Easley and Wayne Clardy (Marsha) of Liberty; three grandchildren, Brittany Porter (Chris) of Easley, Zane Clardy (Holly) of Holly Hill and Caitlyn Clardy of Anderson; and two great-grandchildren, Reece and Blake Porter of Easley.

Mr. Clardy was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Boyce and Daniel Clardy.

Services were held March 4 at Liberty Church of God, officiated by the Rev. Jason Thomas, the Rev. Boyd King and the Rev. Bobby Johnson.

Helen W. Foster

Piedmont — Helen Waldrop Foster, 85, of Mountain Springs Road, wife of the late Claude E. Foster, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017, at her home.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Jim and Lurie Hastings Waldrop.

Mrs. Foster was retired from Milliken, Cushman Plant, in Williamston. She loved her family and crocheting. She was a member of Mountain Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughters, Linda Morris of Piedmont, Lenora Jackson (Paul) of Easley and Claudette Dove of Easley; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Pauline Davis of Piedmont, and Margie Moore and Dorothy Patterson both of Easley; and two brothers, Ralph Waldrop of Greenville and Leroy Waldrop of Pickens.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Donnie Foster; a grandson Allen Morris; and two sons-in-law, Roger Morris and Dr. Gerald Dove.

Funeral services were held March 4 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with burial following in Mountain Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bethel Howard Kelley

Pickens — Bethel Ellen Howard Kelley, of Pickens County, widow of Namon Kelley, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at her home.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Rufus and Mattie Boren Howard.

Mrs. Kelley attended Asheville Teachers College. She was a graduate of Southern Wesleyan University and taught school in the Pickens area for 35 years. For most of her life, she was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and worked in many areas of the church.

Surviving are her daughters, Jayne Ellicott (Jim) of Mt. Pleasant, Carolyn Hughes (Don) of Powdersville and Beth Kohout (Bill) of Easley; grandchildren, Courtney Ellicott Duncan, Erin Kohout Black, Jessica Kohout, Whitney Kohout Stone and Adam Hughes; and great-grandchildren, Caiden and Siena Black and Knox and Lively Duncan.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a grandson, Matt Hughes; and brothers and sisters, Lois Gravely, Claude Howard, Coy Howard, Mellie Garrett, Cecil Howard and Dick Howard.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Sherri Byers, for the love and compassion that she gave to Mrs. Kelley.

Memorial services were held March 5 at Mountain View Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bob Dickard officiating. A private burial will be held. The grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Frances Owens

Liberty — Frances Marie Sova Owens, 70, of 124 Jake Drive, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., she was the widow of Winston Churchhill Owens, and a daughter of the late Frank and Florence Higginbotham Sova.

She worked at Riverside Fashions and later worked at Alexander Drycleaners in Easley. She was a member of Hilltop Wesleyan Church in Liberty.

Surviving are a daughter, Tonya Russell of Liberty; two sons, Jimmy Greentree of Jacksonville, Fla., and Thomas Greentree of Powdersville; two sisters, Shirley Sova and Barbara Frame both of Jacksonville, Fla.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services to honor the life of Mrs. Owens were held March 4 at Hilltop Wesleyan Church in Liberty. No visitation is planned.

Gladys Carolyn Baldwin

Easley — Mrs. Gladys Carolyn Perkins Baldwin, 66, wife of Ivan Leroy Baldwin Jr., passed away Friday, March 3, 2017, at her home.

Born in Swords Creek, Va., a daughter of the late Leonard and Lovera Ester Miller Perkins, Mrs. Baldwin was a graduate of Easley High School and retired from Libery Denim. She was a member of Lenhardt Christian Fellowship, where she served as the church pianist for many years.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 27 years, are two sons, Ivan Leroy Baldwin, III (Annette) of Conway, and Ian John Baldwin (Nicole) of Liberty; four daughters, Julie McFadden (Pete) of Six Mile, Destiny Baldwin of the home, Jeanne’ Morris of Clemson, and Shawna Baldwin (Michael) of Easley; three brothers, Rev. Harry Perkins (Lynn) of Easley, and Larry Perkins (Ann) of Marietta, and Lennie Black of Easley; a sister, Kathy Page (Tommy) of Easley; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Baldwin was predeceased by a son, Timothy Stephen “J.J.” Lesley and a brother, Ernest McDavid Perkins.

Funeral services were held March 6 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with the Rev. Harry Perkins and the Rev. John Brown officiating, with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Ruby b. welborn

Pickens — Ruby B. Welborn, 97, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Feb. 25, 2017, at Clemson Downs Retirement Community in Clemson.

Ruby was born and grew up in Big Eastatoee Valley, Sunset. She was the daughter of the late George Franklin and Grace Lewis Bowie. Ruby graduated from Pickens High School. She earned a teaching certificate from Asheville Normal and Western Carolina Teachers College in 1939. She taught school in South Carolina to children living in Jocassee and Eastatoee, worked at Singer Manufacturing, and later, she became a bookkeeper and worked 20 years as the accountant for Mutual Home Stores. She enjoyed travel, sewing quilts, the outdoors and being a grandmother.

Ruby was married 61 years to the late Robert E. Welborn. Surviving are her daughter, Katherine W. Gitto and her son-in-law Col. Peter J. Gitto, USA Ret., and grandsons Peter R. Gitto and Andrew J. Gitto. Also surviving are her sister, Annie Sue Bowie, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Ruby was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Anne Welborn, and her brothers, George Bowie and Jesse Carlisle Bowie.

A celebration of life was held March 5 at Dillard Funeral Home, with burial following at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Margie R. Price

Sunset — Margie Roper Price, 73, of Mt. Bethel Road, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2017, at Fleetwood Health and Rehabilitation in Easley.

Born in Pickens County, she was a member of Rice’s Creek Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are her husband, Gene Kenneth Price of the home; a brother, Sammy Roper of Easley; and a stepson, Johnny Price of the home.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Lisa Roper.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, in Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Sunset.

The family will receive friends following the graveside service.

Donald Gene Konen

Piedmont — Donald Gene Konen, 69, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017, at his home.

Mr. Konen was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of the late Austina M. Ives and William A. Konen.

In his free time, you could find him creating and playing music.

Survivors include one son, Benjamin Alan Konen (Cathleen) of Simpsonville; one daughter, Sarah Ann Maddox (Chad) of Simpsonville; two brothers, Jerry Lee Konen of Florida and Noel Richard Konen (Lorena Ann) of Piedmont; and five grandchildren, Jacob Maddox, Lucas Maddox, Jaxon Maddox, Dylan Maddox and Madison Konen, all of Simpsonville.

Mr. Konen was predeceased by his parents.

His burial will take place at Ramsey Creek Preserve.

Carroll F. Anthony

Easley — Mr. Carroll Franklin Anthony, 68, husband of Glenda Gilstrap Anthony, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017, at his home.

Born in Greenville County, a son of the late Wilton Daniel “Tom” Anthony and the late Elizabeth Riggins Anthony, Mr. Anthony was a graduate of Pickens High School, North Greenville College, Carson Newman College and Clemson University, where he received his master’s degree. Mr. Anthony was a teacher at Dacusville Junior High School for 12 years and later retired from Alice Manufacturing. He was a member of Georges Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Abram Carroll Anthony (Marjorie) of Easley; a daughter, Alice Elizabeth Anthony (Ron) of James Island; a brother, John Daniel Anthony of Pickens; two sisters, Jean Knight (Phil), and Judy Medlin (Daryl), all of Easley; and one grandchild, Willa Bell.

Funeral services were held March 7 at Georges Creek Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.

Wilma Easter Maw Brown

CENTRAL — Wilma Easter Maw Brown, 81, widow of A.Y. Brown, died Sunday, March 5, 2017.

Born in Central, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Mary Swanson Maw. Wilma was a graduate of Central High School and retired after 25 years as the clerk of court for the city of Clemson municipal court. She was a Baptist and a member of the Ladies Red Hat Club of Clemson.

Surviving are two sons, Dean (Sandra) Brown of Salem and Tate Brown of Six Mile; daughter, Sabrina Lowdenback of Six Mile; sister, Betty Jones of Greenville; grandsons, Justin Brown, Tyler Brown and Dillon Brown; and a great grandson, Cole Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 8, in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:45 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family wants to express their thanks to the Clemson municipal court and the Clemson City Police for their love and support for Wilma and her family.

Charles G. Morton

Easley ­— Charles Glenn Morton, 88, of Auston Woods, husband of Evelyn Finger Morton, passed away Monday, March 6, 2017.

Born in Grand Island, Neb., he was a son of the late Glenn and Eva Kinslow Morton.

Mr. Morton was retired from sales and was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Easley.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Rick Morton of Washburn, Mo., Randy Morton (Sheri) of Hallsville, Mo. and Cindy Adams (Ray) of Destin, Fla.; stepchildren, David Cruson of Oscoda, Mich. and Nancy Schallhorn (John) of Easley; grandchildren, Brad Smith, Scott and Spencer Morton, Vicki, Sandy and Lonnie Morton, Kaitlyn Armstrong (Mike), Emily Schallhorn, Brandi Tarrant (Gerald), and David and Michael Cruson; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Donna Patrick of Springdale, Ark.; and a brother, Vern N. Morton.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, with entombment to follow in Robinson Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends prior to the service on Wednesday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the church.
