COACH JIMMY SATTERFIELD

EASLEY — Jimmy Earl Satterfield, head coach of Furman University’s 1988 NCAA I-AA national championship football team and member of both the South Carolina and Furman athletic halls of fame, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2019. He was 79 years old.

A native of Lancaster, he was the son of the late Rev. Walter Satterfield and the late Grace Satterfield.

Coach Satterfield graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1962 with a B.A. degree in history and English, and was awarded a M.A. in education from USC in 1968. He spent 21 years as a member of Furman’s coaching staff, serving as an assistant for 13 seasons (1973-85) and head coach for eight years (1986-93). He led the Furman Paladins to 16 winning seasons, nine Southern Conference Championships, and the 1988 NCAA I-AA national championship — the first by a SoCon school. His combined head coaching record spanning 21 seasons at Eau Claire, Irmo and Lexington high schools and the collegiate level was 189-63-8.

Satterfield loved his community, family and friends, but most of all spending time with his grandsons. He had a passion for sports, playing cards, gardening and antique cars. He was a member of Easley First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Sara Ann Funderburk Satterfield; a son, Michael Shaun Satterfield of Easley; two daughters, Sydney Hilton Garrett (Todd) of Easley and Lee Ann Satterfield (Patrick Steel) of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, Jerry, Steve and Tim Satterfield; and four grandsons, Hayden Todd Garrett (Anna), Adam Hilton Garrett, Jack Reilly Steel and Conor James Steel.

Memorial services were held on May 11 at Easley First Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr. John Adams officiating.

DIANN GAIL L. WILSON

CENTRAL — Diann Gail Lykins Wilson, 74, wife of William Wilson, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2019.

She was born in Huntington, W.Va., on July 25, 1944, a daughter of Orin and Clara Clark Lykins.

Gail was an accountant for many years, retiring from Ohio Gear/Richmond Gear in Liberty. She had many interests. She enjoyed raising puppies, camping, raising her grandchildren and Facebook.

Gail is survived by her loving husband of nearly 57 years; son, Jeffrey Todd Wilson (Radna) of Hendersonville, Tenn.; daughters, Tina Renee Parker (Stephen) of Pickens and September Wages; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dolores June Toney of Central.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Andy Lykins; and a sister, Idella Benge.

Gail’s family would like to give special thanks to their hospice nurse, Melissa, for the love and care she showed to each member of her family

Funeral services were held on May 10 at the Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home.

DANNY LEON RACKLEY

BELTON — Danny Leon Rackley, 69, of 2603 Cheddar Road, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at his home.

Danny was born Jan. 27, 1950, to J.C. and Hazel Rackley. He was a USMC Vietnam veteran and retired self-employed paint contractor. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and spending time outside.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; son, Jon (Helen) of Easley; grandson, Seth of Easley; and a brother, Mitch Rackley of Kingsport, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Stanley.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, at Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

EMMA LOU GRANT

Pickens — Emma Lou Reeves Grant, 89, widow of James W. Grant, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 8, 2019.

Mrs. Grant was born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Waddy Avery and Liza Jane Queen Reeves. She was formerly employed with Platt Saco Lowell in Easley and later retired from the Singer Company in Pickens. She was a member of East Pickens Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Tony Grant and his wife, Regina, of Pickens; and her sister, Janette Hamlin and her husband, Tommy, of Pelzer.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Grant was preceded in death by her siblings, Polly Pace, Jim Reeves, Nell Smith and Ray Reeves.

Funeral services were conducted on May 11 in the mausoleum chapel at Hillcrest Memorial Park, with burial following.

WOODROW “WOODY” EDWARDS JR.

PICKENS — Woodrow “Woody” Edwards Jr., 70, passed peacefully from this life on Friday, May 10, 2019, at his home in Pickens.

Born in Hendersonville, N.C., he was the son of the late Woodrow and Dellnora Edwards and husband of Rosa Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a carpenter by trade and of the Baptist faith. He cherished his family and was always willing to lend a helping hand to make life better for them. He sacrificed his own needs for the betterment of his family and others. His kind heart will live on in the memories he left behind.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa, of 52 years; three daughters, Nancy Hawkins (Hiawatha) of Easley, Lynn Chapman (Bobby) of Pickens and Rachel Rackley (Chris) of Pickens; one son, Robbie Neal (Charity) of Easley; two sisters, Mamie Blackwell (Luke) of Seneca and Minnie Bell Norris of Inman; eight grandchildren, Honicka (Josh), Cody (Haley), April, Jaimee, Matthew, Kim, Bradley and Dana; and great-grandchildren, Lakin, Ella, Huntley, Brooklyn, Huxley and Noah. Mr. Edwards also leaves many nieces and nephews that he held dear to his heart to share in his memory.

He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Angela Sue; three brothers, Sam, Carl and Will Edwards; two sisters, Martha Mitchell and Mary Richards; and a grandchild, Hank Hawkins Jr.

Memorial services were held May 14 in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel.

JIMMY CHAPMAN TALLEY

CAMDEN — Mr. James (Jimmy) Chapman Talley, 67, of 127 Murrah Drive, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, April 28, 2019, at Magnolia Manor-Rock Hill.

A native of Camden, Jimmy was predeceased by his father, James Louis Talley, mother, Maka Chapman Talley, and his sister, Andrea Talley Davis. For many years Jimmy was in the York County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs group homes and participated in the Horizon Industries programs for special needs clients.

Surviving are his brother-in-law, Jim Davis and wife, Jackie Davis; niece, Lynn Marsh of Fort Mill; niece and her husband, Leigh and Paul Cunningham of Birmingham, Ala.; his four grand nieces, Savannah Leigh Marsh and Jessica Talley Marsh of Fort Mill, and Chloe Grace Cunningham and Sophie Isabella Cunningham of Birmingham, Ala.

A graveside service was held on May 2 at McKinney Chapel Church in Sunset, with Rev. Steve Hogg officiating.

ANGELITA HEREDIA

EASLEY — Angela “Angelita” Heredia (Gonzalez Nazario), 76, of Cardinal Woods Way, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at her daughter’s home.

Born in Jayuya, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of the late Valentin Gonzalez Custodio and Julia Nazario De Jesus.

Mrs. Heredia was a loving mother of four, a grandmother of 11 and a great-grandmother to four. Her love of family and being a mother was her one true calling and everything she lived for. Having lost her mother at the age of 6, she became the mother she did not know and was loved by all who knew her. She adored her husband of 55 years, Rafael Heredia Pagan, who predeceased her in April 2018. Raised in Jayuya, she moved to New Jersey in 1964 and retired in 2005 when she moved to South Carolina. Showing symptoms of Alzheimer’s in 2007, she continued to battle the disease for more than 12 years. She attended the Catholic Church of St. Lukes in Easley.

Surviving are her children, Rafael Heredia Jr. (Luisa) of Easley, Evelyn Maldonado (Jesus) of Piedmont, Carmen Buntenbach (Jamie) of Easley and Ana Maria Brown (Zackary) of Greenville; grandchildren, Joshua, Daniel, Antonio, Angela, Nicolas, Kayla, Michael, Gavin, Ethan, Alexis and Andrew; great-grandchildren, Alannah, Brielle, Adrian and Nolan; and brothers, Juan Gonzalez of Navarre, Fla., and Agustin Gonzalez of Jayuya, Puerto Rico.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Jovino, who passed away in February of this year in Keyport, N.J.

A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, May 15, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road, with burial to follow in Robinson Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 301 University Ridge No. 5850, Greenville, SC 29601 in her honor.

The family will be at the home of Rafael and Luisa Heredia Jr.

THEODORE CALVIN PARRIS

PICKENS — Calvin Parris, 79, husband of Connie Connelly Parris, passed from this life on Sunday, May 12, 2019, at his home.

Born in Sylva, N.C., he was a son of the late Charlie Vinson and Ruby Hazel Clayton Parris. Mr. Parris was a United States Army veteran and was retired from Duke Energy. Calvin enjoyed all sports, but was most fond of racing, and he loved Clemson Tiger football.

Survivors include his wife, Connie, of the home; two sisters, Charlene Marshbanks of Six Mile and Fern Hensley (Harold) of Sylva, N.C., and a brother, Terrell Parris (Ruth) of Pickens.

Calvin was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Dwight Parris.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, at Holly Springs Baptist Church, with funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. officiated by Rev. Tommy Howard. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

CLEMSON — Elaine Kelly Kennemore Dobson Pinion, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 12, 2019, at Oconee Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Pinion was born in Central, daughter of the late Homer R. and Mallie Woodson Kelly. She was predeceased by three husbands, George Kennemore Jr., Walter H. Dobson and W.E. Pinion. She was a retired owner and operator of Clemson Variety and Frame Shop in Clemson and was a member of Trinity Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are daughters, Vicki Kennemore Hayes (Joe) of Easley, Janice Kennemore Livingston of Pendleton, Melinda Dobson Wilbanks (Steve) of Central, Karen Dobson Barker (Gary) of Rosman, N.C., and Angie Dobson Kicklighter of Charleston; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and special friend, Charles Smith of Seneca.

She was also predeceased by a sister, Nell K. Smith; and a stepdaughter, Kathy P. Sheriff.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, at Trinity Wesleyan Church, with burial to follow in Memory Gardens.

LIBERTY — Furman W. “Hop” Hopkins Jr., widower of Nancy Chappell Hopkins, passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at his home.

“Hop” was born in Central, a son of the late Furman W. and Irene Johnston Hopkins Sr. He was a 1965 graduate of D.W. Daniel High School and was a retired employee with H & W Electrical of Greenville. He was a member of Central First Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Jennifer Leigh Knight; son, Jeffrey Warren Hopkins (Lisa); grandchildren, Taylor and Steven Hopkins and Jaylee Knight, all of Liberty; brothers, Bobby Hopkins (Jane Brown) of Clemson and Ronnie Hopkins (Cindy) of Anderson; and sisters, Peggy Cover of Clemson, Gwen Gilstrap of Easley and Linda Patrick (Douglas) of Greenville.

Graveside services were held on May 13 at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Central, with Rev. Austin McKnight officiating.

LOUISE H. MCCALL

EASLEY — Edith Louise Holder McCall, 93, wife of the late Norwood Cleveland McCall, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at her home.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late John William “Gary” Holder and Edith Crowe Holder.

Mrs. McCall was a graduate of Easley High and was retired from Liberty Life Insurance Company after 40 years of dedicated service. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church and enjoyed sewing and growing beautiful flowers in her garden.

Surviving are her children, Ted Alan McCall (Elizabeth) and Sue McCall Rock (Richard), all of Easley; grandchildren, Jamie Sha Barrett and Ashley Louise Barrett Greene; and great-grandchildren, Katie Greene and Keith Hoover.

Mrs. McCall was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, William “Bud” Holder; and sisters, Lillie Viola Holder Galloway and Alice Virginia Holder.

A memorial service was held on May 14 in the funeral home chapel at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

WILLIAM “BILL” HOLLIE ROBIRDS

SIX MILE — William ‘Bill’ Hollie Robirds, 90, went to be with his Lord on Monday, May 6, 2019, in Asheville, N.C.

Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, he was the son of the late William J. and Julia Lee Robirds, and husband of the late Vera Holland Robirds.

Bill’s faith was very important to him, and he served many congregations over the years, most recently as a 26-year member of Cannon Memorial Baptist Church in Central. In his younger years, he loved to fish and tend beautiful flower and vegetable gardens with his wife Vera, with whom he enjoyed traveling all over the country. He was active in the community, donating time and talents faithfully over the years, even being honored along with his wife Vera for their service in upstate South Carolina.

Bill was a proud Army veteran and retiree from Duke Power.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Gantt (Michael) of Crouse, N.C.; two step-daughters, Linda Heatherly (Arlen) of Canton, N.C., and Mary Boynton (John) of Omaha, Neb.; two grandchildren, Dillon Sutton and Taylor Sutton; amd nine step-grandchildren, Stephanie Beach, Michael Heatherly, Ed Baer, Shellie Gunter, Sharon Trammel, Jason Pressley, Brian Pressley, Glen Michael Pressley and Justin Pressley.

In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Edward Robirds; six sisters, Opal Cornwell Robirds, Lucille Marshall Robirds, Mabel Irene Robirds, Mary Ethel Robirds, Dorothy Elizabeth Robirds and Hazel Marie Robirds; three stepchildren, Dorothy Baer, Bill Pressley, and Glenn Pressley; and a step-grandchild, Wendi Sense.

A memorial service was held on May 9 in the mausoleum chapel at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
