LARRY R. WINN, MD

EASLEY — Dr. Larry Ross Winn, 79, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2019, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Columbia, Dr. Winn was the son of the late Walker Wilson and Mattie Marguerite Ross Winn. At age 13, he became an Eagle Scout. He graduated in 1958 from Columbia High School and at age 17, he joined the National Guard, where he served for seven years. He received his B.S. and master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Winn worked for NASA prior to attending MUSC, having graduated in 1974. He did his residency at Greenville General Hospital and was a physician, in Easley, for 41 years, until his sudden death.

As a volunteer for MUSC, Dr. Winn interviewed prospective medical school candidates for more than 30 years. He was past president of the MUSC Alumni Association. Dr. Winn was a gentle soul who loved and cared dearly for his patients. He was a great man of God and member of St. Matthias Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir. His adventuresome spirit led him on many travels, and he enjoyed running, biking, snow skiing, swimming and bird watching.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Wraellen Messex Winn, of the home; a sister, Patricia Winn Langston (Mark) of Mt. Pleasant; sister-in-law, Brenda Messex of Greenville; brother-in-law, Jerry Messex of Georgia; nieces, Gretchen Buchanan (Jack) and Leslie Collier (Matt) and Wramie Spafford (Harry); several nephews, Jason Gallagher, Derrick Messex (Jennifer), and Travis Messex (Teresa); numerous great-nephews and great-nieces; and a special pet Havenese, Annabelle.

Memorial services will be announced by Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

GARY W. GRAY

LIBERTY — Gary W. Gray, 85, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 13, 2019, at his home in Liberty.

He was born on July 29, 1933, in Six Mile, to the late Mary Jane Riggins Gray and Gary Stewart. He was the widower of Judith Nix Gray and Peggy Madden Gray.

Gary was a brick and rock mason and invented and patented the Brick Buggy. He loved working on cars and tractors and was always fixing or creating something. He had a huge heart for animals and enjoyed tending to his catfish ponds. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his three daughters, Sharon King (Tommy), June Coleman (Sam) and Tammy Coleman (Richard); five brothers, Jake Gray, Ray Gray, Wallace Gray, David Gray and Leroy Gray; four grandchildren, Josh Coleman (Kelley), Eli Coleman (Samantha), Lisa Swords (Chris) and Michael Madden (Beverly); and four great-grandchildren, Jonah Coleman, Finn Coleman, Connor Swords and London Lane.

Gary was also predeceased by one brother, Thomas Gray; one sister, Mildred Brewer; and one nephew, Michael Shane Fuller.

Funeral services were held on May 16 in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel, with the Reverend Tony Stancil officiating. Burial was held at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

DOROTHY “DOT” R. MAULDIN

EASLEY — Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Rackley Mauldin, 88, wife of the late Osbone J. Mauldin, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 16, 2019.

Born in Pickens County, the daughter of the late Coy and Elizabeth Young Rackley, Mrs. Mauldin was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, and was retired as the the owner of Special Occasion Catering. Mrs. Mauldin loved to cook and loved her church.

Surviving is a brother, Kenneth E. Rackley (Sue) of Easley. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Mauldin was predeceased by a brother, Melvin Rackley.

Funeral services were held on May 19 at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Burial will be private.

James E. Burgess

PICKENS — James E. Burgess, 77, husband of the late Janasue Burgess, passed from this life on Wednesday, May 15, 2019.

Born in Lake Toxaway, N.C., he was a son of the late Carr and Mamie Chandler Burgess. Mr. Burgess was retired from Cannon Memorial Hospital and was a member of Bethany Church of God.

Survivors include a grandson, Brad Cox (Courtney); a great-grandson, Dawson Cox; one brother, one sister, eight nephews, eight nieces, nine great-nephews, seven great-nieces, 11 great-great-nephews and six great-great-nieces.

Mr. Burgess was predeceased by his parents, his wife, a son, Greg Cox, three brothers and one sister.

A funeral service was held on May 19 at Bethany Church of God. Burial was held at Griffin Baptist Church Cemetery.

BARBARA A. CAMP

EASLEY — Barbara Ann Wright Camp, 83, wife of the late Cecil Ellery Camp, passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2019, at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville.

Born in Easley, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Roscoe Wright and Blanch Irene Brewer Wright.

Mrs. Camp was formerly employed with Saco Lowell in Easley. She was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She enjoyed camping, bowling and most importantly, shopping.

Surviving are her children, Sheila Stansell (Dickie) of Six Mile, Tammy Howard (Terry) of Travelers Rest, Terri Craig (Keith) of Easley and Douglas Camp of Greenville; grandchildren, Brittany, Brandon, Lisa, Melissa, Brandy, Sasha, Robbie and Chelsea; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on May 19 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

HAZEL REECE EVATT GILLESPIE

SUNSET — Hazel Reece Evatt Gillespie, 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Sunset on Friday, May 17, 2019.

The daughter of the late Ernest and Zelfie Reece, Hazel worked 24 years at Mayfair in Pickens, as a spinner. She was the widower of Paul Evatt and B.C. Gillespie.

Hazel, a longtime member of Maranatha Baptist Church in Pickens, loved quilting and sewing. She also enjoyed the many trips she took camping with her family.

She is survived by eight sons, Dean Evatt (Wanda), John Evatt (Pat), Larry Evatt, Leonard Bowie (Kathy), Henry Bowie (Marie), Harold Bowie, Allen Bowie (Vickie) and Stanley “Tojo” Bowie; three daughters, Lorene Gillespie (Waymon), Audrey Alexander (Wayne) and Vicki Taylor; two brothers, E.R. Reece and Earl Reece; one sister, Lucille Elrod (Tommy); 16 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and 34 great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Riley Reece and Bud Reece; and five sisters, Mildred Gillespie, Rubyneal Gillespie, Maddy Ruth Raines, Doris Mauldin and Ravie McCall.

Funeral services were held on May 20 in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. David Ellenburg and the Rev. Wilbur Snyder officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

The family will be at the home of Lorene Gillespie.

EDNA C. YOUNG

EASLEY — Mrs. Edna Calcutt Young, 82, wife of Shady Hampton Young, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2019.

Born in Florence County, the daughter of the late Andrew Berkeley Calcutt and the late Pauline Gibson Calcutt, Mrs. Young was a homemaker and a member of Easley First Baptist Church.

Edna’s life was marked by her love of her family, and she adored her four grandsons. She enjoyed people and never met a stranger. She always enjoyed cooking and serving a meal for friends and family.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 63 years, are a son, Lynn Young and his wife, Jean, of Murrells Inlet; and four grandsons, Hampton, Connor, Sullivan and Berkeley Young.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Young was predeceased by a son, Russell Todd Young; and two brothers, John C. Young and Andrew B. Young Jr.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, in the chapel of Easley First Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Thursday at the church, prior to the service.

Graveside services will follow at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Belin United Methodist Church Cemetery, 4182 US-17 Business, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.

JUDITH “JUDY” NORTON

EASLEY — Judy Norton, 80, passed from this life on Friday, May 17, 2019.

Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of the late Julius Chapman “Cy” Rampey and the late Fleda Adams Rampey. Judy was known as a friend to many people but what she especially enjoyed was her friendship with her Capri’s Eating Buddies, which include Barbara Jean Bivens, Marie Welborn, Tunkie Stokes, Chink Wannamaker, Ruth Ellen Trotter and Linda Childress.

Survivors include a son, Michael Frontis Thomas (Cindy); a daughter, Susan T. McClellan; a stepdaughter, Sherry Thomas Templeton; grandchildren, Rebecca Chase Kay (Tyler), Megan Thomas Dockery (Andrew), Tori Thomas Cassell (Travis), Michael Logan Thomas (Kaiti), Jennifer Barton, Chapman “Chaps” O’Dell Galloway, Adam Hudacek and Ken McIntyre; great-grandchildren, Memphis Kay, Kyler Wilson, Lennon Dockery, Michael Asher Thomas, Brantlee Galloway and Lucas James Thomas; and a brother, J. Dan Rampey (Phyllis).

Judy was predeceased by her parents and two daughters, Lynn Thomas Hudacek and Julie Lee Thomas.

A memorial service was held on May 21 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service officiated by Rev. Aaron Gowens.

PATRICIA H. CLARK

CENTRAL — Patricia Hamilton Clark, 70, widow of Jerry Lee Clark passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at Pruitt Health Care in Six Mile.

Patricia was born in Easley, the daughter of the late John Austin and Etta Mae Gibson Hamilton. She was a former textile employee and most recently worked in food preparation at Ingles in Clemson. She was of the Holiness faith. Patricia enjoyed painting, canning and collecting “what nots.”

Surviving are a brother, Robert Duane Hamilton of Seneca; sister, Janie M. Martin (Junior) of Central; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Patricia was predeceased by a son, Tommy Clark; brothers, Billy Hamilton and Edward Hamilton; and sister, Mildred H. McAlister.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, in Dodge Cemetery, with Rev. Lonnie Donald officiating.

DAVID WAYNE CARPENTER

EASLEY — David Wayne Carpenter, 70, passed from his earthly home to his heavenly home on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born on May 17, 1948, in Liberty, he was a son of the late William Ernest and Mildred Kay Carpenter. Wayne served in the U.S. Army for 21 years from 1969 until 1989. He was a Vietnam War veteran, serving with the 4th Infantry Division. He also served in Korea and Germany. He retired as a Sergeant First Class (E7).

He also retired from the S.C. Department of Corrections, where he worked for 14 years. He also was employed at Omni Source and Toyota of Easley. He was a member of Calumet Baptist Church.

He was a member of American Legion Post 151, a lifetime member of the VFW, where he served as commander, senior vice commander and chaplain. He was a lifetime member of the 4th Infantry Division. He had a great love for his wife, family and automobiles.

Wayne is survived by his wife of the home; two step sons of Easley; his sister, Cathie Mills (Jimmy) of Liberty; nieces, Amanda Thompson (Kevin) of Easley and Marie Porter (Zach) of Warner Robbins, Ga.; great nieces and nephews, Tanner Smith, Mallory and Maddie Porter, all of Warner Robins, Ga., Sarah and Jackson Thompson of Easley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Fred Carpenter.

Funeral services to honor Wayne’s life were conducted May 17 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial with military honors followed at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Cathie, 102 Belleview Drive, Liberty SC 29657.

JAMES BRYAN “JAMEY” TEAGUE

WEST COLUMBIA — Jamey Teague, 50, passed from this life on Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Born in Pickens, he was a son of the late Jerry Paden Teague and the late Martha Shehan Teague Alexander.

Survivors include two sisters, Jerri Lynn Porter and Julie Hunter; and an uncle, Ted Shehan, all of Pickens.

A private service will be held a later date.
