MICHAEL RAY BASS

LIBERTY — Michael Ray Bass Sr., 57, died on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at AnMed Hospital in Anderson.

Michael was preceded in death by his father, Richard Bass Jr.

He is survived by his mother, Nancy Brigman Bass; three brothers, Tommy Bass and wife Vickie of Liberty, Timmothy Bass of Lumberton, N.C., and Paul Bass and his wife Becky of Shallotte, N.C.; two sisters, Cathy Hamilton and husband Zack of Easley and Kelly Bagwell and husband Chris of Travelers Rest; a son, Michael Bass Jr. and wife Angeleki of Hope Mills, N.C.; a stepson, Vance Andrew Britt and wife Aston of Fayetteville, N.C.; a daughter, Chasity Bass of Liberty; and four grandchildren, Kayden Coursey, Nina Coursey, Jayden Coursey and Alyssa Bass.

Visitation was held on April 28 at Floyd Mortuary and Crematory in Lumberton, N.C. The funeral service immediately followed the visitation, in the chapel of Floyd Mortuary and Crematory.

 

REV. KENNETH DONNAN LAWSON

EASLEY — Rev. Kenneth Donnan Lawson, 82, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2023, at his residence.

Rev. Lawson was born in Chester on Jan. 28, 1941, to the late Rev. Guy Humphries Lawson Sr. and the late Lillian Merritt Donnan Lawson. He is survived by his wife, Ella Lawson.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Sightler Lawson.

Rev. Lawson proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, retiring after 21 years of service. He served as a hospital corpsman and achieved the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. Rev. Lawson earned a Master of Divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Master of Education from Furman University. Rev. Lawson taught science at Tanglewood Middle School, served as pastor of Wake Union Baptist Church and Glenwood Baptist Church, and was a missionary pastor of Rome Baptist Church in Rome, Italy. He loved and enjoyed visiting friends and family, and he also enjoyed gardening, collecting and reading. Rev. Lawson was an active member of Glenwood Baptist Church.

In addition to his loving wife, Rev. Lawson is survived by his two sons, Marion Lawson (Tracy) of Liberty and Michael Lawson (Alison) of Youngsville, N.C.; a sister, Glenda Cannon of Lyman; a brother-in-law, Gilbert Rivers of Powdersville; six grandchildren, James Lawson (Tara), Emily Moats (Chandler), Samuel Lawson, Brandon Lawson, Nicholas Lawson and Zachary Lawson; and three great-grandchildren, Noah Lawson, Judah Lawson and Lawson Moats.

In addition to his first wife and his parents, Rev. Lawson was preceded in death by a brother, Guy H. Lawson, Jr.; a sister, Mary Lillian Rivers; and a brother-in-law, Charles Cannon.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at Rock Springs Baptist Church, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service, at the church.

The family members are at their respective homes.

LAWRENCE WAYNE ‘TINY’ HOOPER

EASLEY — Mr. Lawrence Wayne “Tiny” Hooper, 82, went home to the Lord on Thursday, April 27, 2023.

Wayne was born in Jackson County, N.C., on Dec. 15, 1940, to the late Davis and Mable Wachob Hooper. He enjoyed being outdoors, where he would spend time farming, gardening, fishing, bear hunting and playing practical jokes on anyone he could. Wayne loved going to his church, Life Church in Dacusville. He was a veteran and served in the Army, where he was an RA Arty (Nike Missile). Above all else, he loved his family and would often ask about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Wayne is survived by seven children, Eric Hooper of Clinton, JoAnn Steinseifer of Easley, Kenneth Hooper (Gina) of Powdersville, Brian Hooper (Candice) of Charleston, Patty Stenger of Liberty, Tara Johnson (Micah) of Easley and Sonja Green (Katrina) of Charleston; nine grandchildren, Candace, Christine, Stanley, Derek, Amanda, Nicholas, Job, Ariana and Chase; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Hooper and Frank Hooper; and a sister, Mary Wyatt.

In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy Hooper; and two brothers, Gordon Hooper and Huey Hooper.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10-10:45 a.m., prior to the service.

JOSEPH D. ‘DANNY’ ELLENBURG

GREER — Joseph D. “Danny” Ellenburg, 47, loving husband to Karen B. Ellenburg, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023, at Prisma Health Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born on July 1, 1975, in Greenville County, Danny was the son of the Janice Cooley Summerall and the late Dana Joe Ellenburg Sr. Danny was an outdoors man who enjoyed fishing, NASCAR and Clemson football.

Survivors include his wife, Karen B. Ellenburg; his son, Trenton Ellenburg (Haley); his mother, Janice Summerall; his stepmother, Tammy Ellenburg; his granddaughter, Emma Ellenburg; siblings, David Wilson (Angela), Cassie Summerall, Derrick Ellenburg (Amber), Lacey Ferguson (Adam), Haley Lopez (Antonio) and Ashley Ellenburg; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, Danny was predeceased by his brother, D.J. Ellenburg Jr.

The family hosted a memorial service to honor Danny’s life on April 29 at New Life Baptist Church.

AMANDA E. HOLBROOKS

EASLEY — Amanda Elaine Holbrooks, 43, passed away Monday, April 24, 2023.

Originally from Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest Reece and Yevonne Holbooks. Amanda loved spending time with her kids and her family. She was thoughtful, funny and loved to read.

Surviving are her fiancé, Jerry Minner; her daughters, Alaena Russell and Isabella Minner; her brothers, Joshua and Mark Holbrooks; and a sister, Gina Holbrooks.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 5, at 2 p.m., at Robinson Funeral Home – Downtown, Easley.

LESTER ALEXANDER NORTON JR.

EASLEY — Lester Alexander Norton Jr., 79, loving husband of 47 years to the late Vernie Norton, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at his home.

Born on Aug. 22, 1943, in Anderson County, Jr. was the son of the late Lester A. Norton and Bertha Brewer Norton. Mr. Norton enjoyed playing and watching golf.

Survivors include his children, Ginger Lynne Owens of Easley, Melinda Seymour of Easley, Teresa McCullough of Greenville, Tim Norton of Piedmont and Betty White of Liberty; 11 grandchildren; and siblings, Rufus Earl Norton and Gearleen Norton.

Mr. Norton was predeceased by his wife, Vernie Norton.

Visitation was held on May 1 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens, with a funeral service following. Burial followed the service at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley.

Flowers will be accepted.

DAVID E. RODRIGUES

EASLEY — David Eugene Rodrigues, 88, husband of Geneieve “Joan” Rodrigues, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on May 1, 1934, in Brockton, Mass., he was a son of the late Ambrose G. and Edith M. Alexander Rodrigues. David attended Zion Bible Institute, where he received his ministerial diploma and then received his Bachelor’s in Christian Education from Southeastern University in 1998. David was extremely loving and enjoyed having visitors at his home. He enjoyed gardening, worshipping, singing and playing the piano and organ. He loved being active in his church, where he was always serving and volunteering, but most of all, he adored his family. David was also an active and passionate member of Gideons International.

In addition to his wife, David is survived by his brother, John G. Rodrigues (Jean) of Cape Coral, Fla.; his sisters-in-law, Josephine Rodrigues of Taunton, Mass., and Shirley Rodrigues of Warren, R.I.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brothers, Rev. Peter, Walter and Rev. Paul Rodrigues (Agnes).

The family will receive friends from 1-1:45 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at Robinson Funeral Home – Powdersville Road.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 6, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home – Powdersville Road.

GAIL CLINE

EASLEY — Gail White Cline, 70, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023.

Born in Roswell, Ga., a daughter of the late Jessie Windle White and the late Barbara Jean Cowart Spruill, Gail attended the University of Georgia, but received her Bachelor’s degree in rural development from Clemson University. She started her career working as a civilian for the U.S. Army and then went on to be a stockbroker.

Gail retired from the USDA-RD with 34 years of service.

Gail served in many areas, such as the past senior regent of the Easley Moose Lodge, former head of the city of Easley 4th of July committee and served as past president of the NARFE Association of Clemson. Gail touched many lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Surviving are her daughter, Larney G. Cline (Matt Parris) of Simpsonville; a son, Donald Anders (Joann) of Sanford, N.C.; and 10 grandchildren.

A velebration of life will be held at a later date to be announced.

FRANCES D. CAMPBELL

EASLEY — Frances D. Campbell, 92, wife of 63 years to the late Roy A. Campbell, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023, at her home.

Frances was born in Pickens County to the late Thomas William Dunn and Evangeline Irvin Dorr Dunn on July 2, 1930. She was a member of Cedar Rock Baptist Church. Frances loved to sew, read and go shopping.

Survivors include her children, Kay Henson (Curtis) of Greer and Royce Howard of the home; her grandchildren, Curt Henson, Chad Jennings, Seth Strong, Ramona Henson and Ali Saunders; a sister-in-law, Jean Vinson; and several nieces and nephews.

Frances was predeceased by her husband, Roy A. Campbell; and her parents, Thomas William and Evangeline Door Dunn.

Graveside services were held on April 27 at Cedar Rock Baptist Church.

TOMMIE A. BAGWELL

EASLEY — Tommie Ann Stephens Bagwell, 76, beloved wife of James Edward Bagwell, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2023.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas W. and Margaret Slaten Stephens.

Tommie retired from the School District of Pickens County. She enjoyed flower gardening, as well as spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church and the Sara Smith Sunday School Class.

In addition to her husband James of 55 years, she is survived by her son, Michael S. Bagwell, and wife, Stephanie, of Easley; and her grandchildren, Carson Barnes, Colten J. Bagwell and Crosby S. Bagwell.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 4, from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m., at Robinson Funeral Home – Downtown, with the funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville.

SANDRA C. OWENS

LIBERTY — Sandra Coker Owens, 76, of 16 Willard St., surrounded by her loving family, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 30, 2023, at her residence.

Born in Pelzer, she was the wife of Homer Lamar “Marcy” Owens for more than 55 years and was a daughter of the late Milton and Elnora Rogers Coker.

Mrs. Owens received her associate’s degree from Anderson College and retired from the School District of Pickens County Educators Federal Credit Union.

She was a loving wife and mother, but most importantly, she was a child of God. She and Marcy were longtime members of East Side Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her son, Brian Owens (Terri) of Liberty; and her daughter, Ashleigh Owens of Easley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Coker Brown, and a brother, David R. Coker.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Owens will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 4, in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial will be at Liberty Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the mortuary.

CHARLES HARVEY

PICKENS — Mr. Charles E. Harvey, 83, loving husband of Georgia Huffstickler Harvey, of Pickens, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2023 at Manna Health and Rehabilitation in Pickens.

Mr. Harvey was born in Oconee County on Oct. 17, 1939, to the late Charles and Jessie Mae Sullivan Harvey. He retired from the School District of Pickens County as a head custodian, and in his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing. Mr. Harvey attended Northside Baptist Church in Pickens.

In addition to his loving wife, Mr. Harvey is survived by two sons, William “Peewee” Harvey and Rex Harvey; two stepsons, John Reeves and Mark Reeves; a stepdaughter, Cindy Arnold; and three sisters, Joan Littleton, Frances Greene and Wilma Grant.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Harvey was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Harvey; a sister, Bessie Capps; and his best friend, Lowell McCall.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 5, at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

The family will receive friends on Friday, following the graveside service, at the cemetery.

The family members are at their respective homes.

MARY H. STANSELL

EASLEY — Mary Helen Nix Stansell, 86, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, April 27, 2023, in Watertown, S.D.

Mary was born on Nov. 23, 1936, in Six Mile, to Charles and Mary Lois (Nimmons) Nix. She was married to Lloyd Stansell, and together they had two children. Mary retired in 2007 from WestPoint Stevens in Clemson, after 41 years in supervision.

She was a faithful member of Roanoke Baptist Church in Liberty for many decades until she moved to live with her daughter in Watertown, S.D., where she was a faithful member of Harvest Baptist Church, was loved by all and was known as the church “MaMa.” She was loved and adored by everyone who knew her.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Tracy Petit of Easley and Chastity (Rev. Lamar) Whittemore of Watertown, S.D.; two sisters and one brother; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; her parents, and several brothers and sisters.

A celebration of life service was held at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown, S.D., on April 30, with service conducted by Pastor Lamar Whittemore, and a special remembrance by Rev. Bradley Seaton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at the Robinson Funeral Home Downtown chapel, with visitation beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The burial will be at Hillcrest Gardens in Pickens. Active pallbearers will be Kenny McClaren, Steve McClaren, Tyler McClaren, DJ Petit, David Cantrell and Shannon Moody.
