VIOLA ROACH NIX
EASLEY — Viola Roach Nix, 91, wife of the late Larry Broadus Nix, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2021.
Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Rufus Nix and the late Rachel Hamilton Nix, Mrs. Nix retired from Alice Manufacturing Company with more than 50 years of service and was a member of Roanoke Baptist Church.
Surviving are her son, Larry Michael Nix (Sybil) of Easley; her daughter, Sheila Mauldin (Mark) of Idaho; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Nix was predeceased by two brothers, Willie and James Roach; and a sister, Sue Reid.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20, at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20, at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, Easley, prior to the graveside service.

GERALDINE BEARDEN
EASLEY — Geraldine Bearden, 77, daughter of the late Alvoid and Ina Ridley Galloway, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021, at Manna Healthcare Center in Pickens.
She is survived by her children, Douglas Bearden (Cindy) of Easley, Angie Chappell (Tony) of Easley and Linda Tant of Pickens; grandchildren, Heather Holder, Bryan Bearden, Ann Vickers, Darlene Finley, Beth Couch, Diane Couch, Nicole Couch and James Couch; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and siblings, Calvin Galloway Jr., Patsy Duncan and Roy Galloway.
She was predeceased by her parents; a daughter, Rhonda Bearden; grandson, Jamie Chappell; and sisters, Beulah Holcombe and Imogene Bearden.
Funeral services for Ms. Bearden were held on Aug. 17 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home. Burial followed the service at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

RONALD DALE CHAPPELL
EASLEY — Ronald Dale Chappell, 62, son of the late Junior Hubert Chappell and Margaret Wynez Chappell Collins, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2021, at his home.
Born April 9, 1959, Dale was a native of Pickens County. He was a graduate of Pickens High School. Dale enjoyed being outdoors; he loved camping and hunting. He always enjoyed taking people to hike or to tour the local parks and waterfalls. If you wanted to enjoy “the sights,” Dale was your guide; he could tell you the history of most everything. He also loved South Carolina Gamecocks football.
Survivors include his siblings, Furman Chappell, Nancy Chappell Wells, Sandra Jean Gilstrap (Roger) and Tim Chappell (Brandie); numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews that he loved with his whole heart; numerous cousins, uncles and aunts that he spent quality time with, and special friends, Alvin Bagwell, Chuck Blowers, Kim Smith, Kyle Robinson and David Smith.
In addition to his parents, Dale was predeceased by his sister, Amy Chappell Childress of Easley; paternal grandparents, Rescue and Oleta Chappell; and maternal grandparents, Calvin and Reatha Collins.
The family is planning a memorial service, which will be held at a later date.

The family is also accepting donations to help with Mr. Chappell’s final expenses.

HELEN CANTRELL
EASLEY — Helen Cantrell, 94, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021.
Born in Spartanburg County, a daughter of the late Leo and Bessie Bramlett Cantrell, Helen was retired from Alice Manufacturing Company with 49 years of service and was a member of Arial United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Sybil Browning (Wallace) of Easley and Edna Dillard of Six Mile; four nieces; five great-nieces; five great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by two sisters, Sarah Cantrell and Betty McKamey.
Graveside services were held on Aug. 15 at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

FRANKLIN STEWART
PICKENS — E. Franklin Stewart, 85, husband of the late Evelyn Reece Stewart, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2021, at his home.
Franklin is survived by his daughter, Sherry Ross (Ray) of Pickens; a son, Stanley Stewart (Cynthia) of Pickens; and a granddaughter, Emily Stewart.
Mr. Stewart was predeceased by his loving wife, Evelyn, his parents and his two brothers.
A graveside service was held on Aug. 15 at Mountain Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

BOB RAKER
EASLEY — Mr. Robert Ellis “Bob” Raker, 75, husband of Stesuko “Sassy” Ames, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021.
Born in Tucson, Ariz., a son of the late William Robert Raker and the late Christine Whitaker Raker, Mr. Raker was a retired firefighter and later retired from property management. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in the Vietnam War.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 30 years, are his two sons, Bobby Raker (Lynn Wargo) of South Bend, Ind., and Brad Raker (Jody) of Clearwater, Fla.; his daughter, Laura Raker-Cihak (Craig) of New Carlisle, Ind.; his two stepdaughters, Babette Faerber (Mark) of Alpharetta, Ga., and Nancy Shafer (Mike) of Covington, Ky.; his sister, Jerry Sturma of Shipshewana, Ind.; and his 10 grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Raker was predeceased by a brother, William Raker.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

ALLEN CROWE
SIX MILE — Allen Crowe, 49, loving husband of 29 years to Viola Crowe, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2021, at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.
A native of Pickens County, Allen was born Aug. 29, 1971, a son of Glenn Crowe Sr. and the late Brenda Crowe.
Survivors include his wife, Viola; three brothers, Glenn Crowe Jr., Darryl Crowe and Mitchell Crowe; and sister-in-law, Vera Crane.
In addition to his mother, Brenda, Mr. Crowe was predeceased by his sister, Gwen Crowe, and mother-in-law, Lucille R. Owens.

DANIEL L. OAKLEY
EASLEY — Daniel Lewis Oakley, 100, husband of the late Margaret Lucille Head Oakley, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2021.
Born on May 9, 1921, in Oconee County, he was a son of the late Caleb and Alice Owens Oakley.
Mr. Oakley was retired from John Foster Ford, formerly in Easley. After retiring, he enjoyed repairing automobiles at his home and fishing. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in England, the Philippines and New Guinea.
Surviving are his children, Tony Oakley (Debbie) of Taylors and Brenda Greer (Phil) of Easley; grandchildren, Leigh Threatt (Jimmy) of Pickens and Jan Metz (Jason) of Anderson; great-grandchildren, Brady Metz (Katelyn), Greer Metz, Latham Metz, Luke Threatt and Olivia Threatt; and great-great-grandchildren, Asher and John Metz.
Mr. Oakley was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Maude Nicholson and Carrie Dogherty; and brothers, David Oakley and Andrew Oakley.
A private graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

LARRY PORTER JR.
PICKENS — E. Larry Porter Jr., 93, died on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2021, at his residence.
Born in Easley, he was the widower of Evelyn Jones Porter and son of the late Elbert Larry Porter Sr. and Clara Pressley Porter.
He retired from Crane Chevrolet, where he worked as a mechanic for 30 years. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the Bates Masonic Lodge No. 189 AFM.
Surviving are a son, Gary Porter (Chris) of Pickens; a brother, Jerry Porter of Pickens; a sister, Kay Padgett of Liberty; two grandchildren, Amanda and Rebecca; six great-grandchildren; and special friends, Roy Stoddard (Ivy) and Carlton Arnold (Angela).
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Rick Porter; and two sisters, Ann Lollis and Sue McCauley.
Graveside services to honor the life of Mr. Porter were held on Aug. 13 at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

DONALD LEE BENNETT
NORRIS — Donald Lee Bennett, 79, of Hickory Lane, formerly a resident of Longmont, Colo., died on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021, at his residence.
Born in West Virginia, he was a son of the late Ermel Conard and Lela Elizabeth Dorsey Bennett. He was retired from Firestone and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are a daughter, Sara Cater (Chris) of Norris; two sons, Donald Eugene Bennett of Norris and Richard William Bennett of St. Mary’s, W.Va.; two stepdaughters, Robin Selman (Dean) and Taryn (Tracy/Dane) Schulz; two sisters, Pauline Pishner of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Jean Halstead of Wakeman, Ohio; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Judith Sharon Bennett Morrison; his second wife, Genie Bennett; a son, Gary Wayne Bennett; five sisters; his step-mother; a brother; and a step-brother.
A private memorial service will be held in the Liberty Mortuary chapel.

WAYNE ALAN ‘SMILEY’ WOODS
SIX MILE — Smiley Woods, 68, loving husband of 41 years to Denise R. Woods, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021, at his home.
Smiley was born Sept. 24, 1952, a son of the late Gernell Lee and Grace Josephine Woods.
Mr. Woods loved being outdoors and taking long nature walks.
Survivors include his wife, Denise; two children, Jason Wayne Woods (April) of Central and Justin Shane Woods (Chasity) of Six Mile; three grandchildren, Hannah Woods, Jaydon Woods and Cale Connelly; one sister, Ellen Watts, and one brother, Mickey Woods, both of Clayton, Ga.; along with many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Woods was predeceased by his brother, Ralph Woods.
Graveside services to honor Smiley were held on Aug. 13 at Price Cemetery in Clayton, Ga.
