JUANITA SCRUGGS

PICKENS — Juanita Cisson Scruggs, 85, wife of the late Edward Scruggs Sr., went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020, at her home.

Born on May 26, 1935, in Easley, she was the daughter of the late Joe Ernest Cisson and Laura Jane Childress Cisson. Juanita was retired from the School District of Pickens County, serving meals to the children of the Upstate. She was a member of Gilead Independent Baptist Church and enjoyed cooking family meals, bird watching and shopping at Hamrick’s.

Surviving are her three children, Jimmy Scruggs (Marie), Joan Turner (Tony) and Kathy Sipe (Sonny); one sister, Grace Owens; three grandchildren, Kristi (Johnny), Lori and Kimberly (Jacob); six great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Juanita was predeceased by three sisters, Barbara Ann Looper, Laura Jo Cisson and Maybeth Owens.

A graveside service was held on Aug. 7 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens, with Rev. Jimmy Burrell and Rev. Sam Trotter officiating.

JUDY GLAZENER

STARR — Vivian Judy Chapman Glazener, 68, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2020, at her home.

Born Sept. 17, 1951, in Pickens, she was the daughter of the late James Buford Chapman and Lois Vivian Dorsey Chapman. Judy formerly worked for the Budd Group at Southern Weslyan University. She attended Gethsemane Baptist Temple.

She is survived by her husband, William M. Glazener III; sons, James Mark Taylor (Jennifer) and Brian Matthew Taylor (Tosha), both of Central; brothers, Benny Ray Chapman (Sherry) of Liberty and Roy Chapman of Easley; sisters, Shirley Whitaker and Peggy Posey (Steve), both of Liberty; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Harold Taylor; and brothers, Kenneth Chapman and James Chapman, who died in infancy.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13 at Gethsemane Baptist Temple.

The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m., with Rev. Sam Duncan officiating. Those attending the burial may meet at Liberty Memorial Gardens in Liberty at 3 p.m.

The family members will be at their respective homes.

JON M. COON

EASLEY — Jon Marshall Coon, 75, died in faith at his Easley home on Aug. 7, 2020.

Born in Sioux Falls, S.D., Jon graduated from the University of West Florida and Columbia Theological Seminary. He was a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran.

His early professional years were spent as an oil field diver specializing in explosives, NASA dive safety officer and charter boat captain before culminating in a 30-year career as executive and regional trainer with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.

Jon was a passionate advocate of public safety and police diving and assisted in the development of dive programs for the YMCA and the Boy Scouts of America. He has authored four books on modern sea adventures.

Jon was a member of the Easley Rotary Club and Easley Presbyterian Church.

Jon is survived by his wife, Rachel Hall Coon; daughter, Cathy Franklin; sisters, Janice (Joe) Gulick and Carolyn (Will) Mowchan; and granddaughters, Katie and Rachel Reed.

He was predeceased by his parents, John Marshall and Mercedes Pettis Coon; and granddaughter, Abigail Reed.

The family extends a special thanks to Hospice of the Upstate, Inc.

GRANVILLE EUGENE NELSON

SENECA — Granville Eugene Nelson, 77, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Harriman, Tenn., he was the husband of Patti Nelson and the son of the late Howard and Velma Nelson.

Granville was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, where he served in the choir, as a Sunday school teacher, a former youth leader and a member of the church bowling league. He was a foster parent to hundreds of children over the years. Granville was the owner and founder of Nelson Tree Service and other businesses. He loved fishing and singing gospel music and never met a stranger!

In addition to his loving wife, Patti, he is survived by five sons, Tim Nelson, Jeff Nelson (Daniel Jent), Scott Nelson (Rachel), Bill Nelson (Shaqalia) and Chris Nelson; two daughters; Jennifer Nelson (Sam Moss) and Nikki Nelson: one sister, Ruth Stone (Cecil); and one brother, Wayne Nelson (Reba). Granville leaves many grandchildren to share in his memory, Joshua Nelson (Meghan Glenn), Kaleb Smith, Kylie Smith, Katie Smith, Kelsie Smith, Macy Nelson, Gunner Nelson, Haiden Honeycutt, James Nelson (Amber), TJ Nelson (Amy), Kira Carter (Billy), Jackson Rodgers, Anthony Smith, Aaron Smith, Jayden Kennemore and Caleb Moss. Great-grandchildren include Kaleb Nelson, Jacob Nelson, Cameron Nelson, Lilly Nelson and Ava Grace Nelson (due in October).

In addition to his parents, Granville was predeceased by a sister, Lois Summers; and a daughter-in-law, Madonna Nelson.

A memorial service was held on Aug. 8 at Hopewell Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mike Bowling officiating. Burial followed at Oconee Memorial Park in Seneca, led by Rev. Bob Dickard.

GOLDA R. NOBLITT

CENTRAL — Golda R. Noblitt, 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020.

She was born Dec. 3, 1931, in Madison County, N.C., a daughter of Everett and Wavel Franklin Rice. Golda was a long-time member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Central.

After attending schools in Madison County, Golda went on to further her education at Central Wesleyan University, graduating in the class of 1972. She earned her master’s degree in education from Clemson University in 1976. Golda taught school in Liberty her entire career, retiring in October 1993 after 22 years of service.

Golda is survived by her son, Steve Noblitt (Rebecca) of Easley; her daughter, Katie Jerolamon (Tim) of Clemson; three grandchildren, Mike Jerolamon (Jenny), Lisa Hill (John) and Joseph Noblitt; two brothers, Mac Rice and Harlon Rice; four sisters, Rozella Ramsey, Dora Ann Rice, Othello Ogle and Karen Buff; and her little dog, Lulu.

In addition to her parents, Golda was preceded in death by her loving husband, Nedand; and a brother, J. V. Rice.

Friends may visit Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home at 108 Cross Creek Road in Central on Wednesday, Aug. 12, from noon-4:30 p.m. to view and sign the register book.

There will be a private graveside service for the family.

JOHN M. MCCLELLAN

EASLEY — Mr. John Morris McClellan, 86, of Frank Street, formerly of Regent Drive, Greenville, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020.

He was born in Seneca, the son of the late Allen Lee McClellan and Lola Smith McClellan.

John was a graduate of Easley High School and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Furman University. He was a teacher and counselor with the School District of Greenville County, later worked as a pharmacy technician with McLeskey-Todd Pharmacy in Travelers Rest and worked part-time for Robinson Funeral Home. John was a member of Easley First Baptist Church and a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are a sister, Thelma M. Pepper of Easley; a niece, Margie Pepper Vest of Easley; a nephew, Jeffery Lee Pepper (Cindy) of Easley; two great-nieces, two great-nephews; and two great-great-nieces.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by a sister, Doris K. McClellan.

Private graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

ERNEST CRAIG PELFREY

LIBERTY — Ernest Craig Pelfrey, 66, died on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020, at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Pickens, he was a son of the late Rev. Prue Pelfrey and Evelyn Rowland Pelfrey. Craig was a retired truck driver and was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran. He loved the outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Dianne Summerall Pelfrey of the home; two sons, Darrell Pelfrey of Liberty and Sammy Ross of Liberty; three daughters, Carrie Springs (Robert) of Pendleton, Kaye Lester of Pickens and Katrina Spahr of Liberty; two brothers, Billy Joe Pelfrey of Pickens and Frankie Pelfrey of Easley; and 11 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sister, Sheila Anders and Nancy “Mandy” Harless; and a granddaughter, Brooke Lester.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Pelfrey will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial will follow at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and CDC social distancing guidlines, limited seating will be available. A livestream of the service will be available for viewing at 2 p.m. on Wednesday by visiting the tribute wall of his obituary at libertymortuary.com.

LIBERTY — Bertie Mae Smith, 77, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020.

Survivors include her children, Eddie Smith of Liberty, Scott Smith of Liberty, Maria Gilbert (Ricky) of Easley, Lisa Granger (Randy) of Liberty and Frankie Smith (Angie) of Gray Court; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert Raines and Kenny Raines; and sisters, Helen Harris, Ruby Ramey and Geraldine Bryant.

Bertie was predeceased by her parents, Marcus and Fannie Raines, George Smith and Sylvia Lynn Smith.

The family hosted a memorial service on Aug. 8 at the Pleasant View Campus of Alive Wesleyan Church.

JIMMIE RAY SULLIVAN

PICKENS — Jimmie (Ray) Sullivan, 77, husband of Glenda Pinion Maxey Sullivan, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.

Ray was a former maintenance supervisor and engineer at La France Industries in Pendleton. After retirement, he was a maintenance supervisor for Brookdale Assisted Living. Ray was loved by many. He loved his family dearly and his church family. He was a dedicated member of Faith Baptist Church for more than 40 years and loved serving God. He took pride in serving his country, proudly serving four years in the Army and 22 years in the National Guard, where he made many special friends. His pride and joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he loved very much.

Ray is survived by his wife, Glenda; children, Rená Solesbee (Ben), Russell Sullivan (Denise), Mitzi Finley and Timothy Sullivan; grandchildren, Randi (Carl), Crystal (Johnathon), Jason, Ryan (Kimberley), Olivia (Chance), Trivette, Kaitlyn and Mason; step-children, Alan Maxey, Kevin Maxey (Cindy) and April Bragg; six step-grandchildren, Jessie (Kayla), Abbie, Lawson, Kade, Judson and Avery; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Sandy Broom; and special surviving relatives, Brenda Kelly, Sheila Fulford Eubanks, Angela Fulford Davis and Adrienne Eubanks Bundrick.

Ray was predeceased by his parents, Haskell Sullivan and Hattie Gilreath Sullivan; his wife of 35 years, Betty Fulford Sullivan; and three brothers, Bo Sullivan, Gilmer Sullivan and Danny Sullivan.

A graveside service was held on Aug. 7 at Hillcrest Memorial Park, officiated by Rev. Gary James and Rev. Alan Moore.

OLIVE VERA STANSELL SURRATT

EASLEY — Ms. Olive Vera Surratt, 87, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2020.

Ms. Surratt was born in Pickens County and was the daughter of the late William Abner Stansell and Grethel Cantrell Stansell and wife to the late William Eugene Surratt.

Ms. Surratt was a longtime member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley and was known to be a gentle and kind person. She was loved by everyone. She was quick-witted and loved playing the jokester with people. She loved the art of fishing with a cane pole, as well as playing Bingo. Ms. Surratt was known by her family as being the greatest cook and was known especially for her fried chicken and biscuits. Ms. Surratt’s humor and personality will be missed by all that she knew.

Survivors include a son, Cyrus “Bim” Surratt (Bertha) from Georgetown; daughter, Earline Rumsey from Easley; grandchildren, Mark Guthrie (Alison), Lisa Moss (Ty), Diane Milton (Walter), Jerry Guthrie, Christy Brazell (Mark), Will Surratt, Ryler Dennis and Pablo Vargas; brother, Wade Stansell from Crockett, Calif.; and two sisters, Ellen Sponsler from Easley and Linda Davis from Mauldin. She is also survived by eight loving and precious great-grandchildren and four adorable great-great-grandchildren. Ms. Surratt was predeceased by a daughter, Wanda Chapman Jackson; brothers, Mack Stansell, Carl Stansell and Ralph Stansell; and sisters, Lucille Smith, Irene Stansell, Julie Mae Stansell and Helen Owen.

A funeral service was held at Rock Springs Baptist Church on Aug. 11. Burial was held at the Rock Springs Baptist Church cemetery.

WALKER TAYLOR LEE

PICKENS — Walker Taylor Lee, 78, husband of the late Mary Madden Lee, passed from this life on Monday, Aug. 3, 2020, at his home.

Mr. Lee was born in Transylvania County, N.C., a son of the late Clyde and Mary Hall Lee. He was retired from the Foster Plant of Alice Manufacturing Co. and was of the Church of God faith. A farmer at heart, Mr. Lee loved growing his garden and sharing with others and working with his horses and donkeys.

Survivors include his son, Gary Walker Lee (Sharon) of Pickens; grandchildren, Noah, Savannah, Jonah and Elijah Lee; and a sister, Lorene Cobb (Buddy) of Mountain Rest.

A funeral service was held on Aug. 6 at Dillard Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roland Bearden officiating. Entombment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

FRANCES CAROLYN AIKEN

EASLEY — Mrs. Frances Carolyn Aiken, 78, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 25, 2020.

Mrs Aiken was born in Greenville and was the daughter of the late Milliard Smith and Alene Smith and wife to the late Samuel Earl Aiken.

Mrs. Aiken was a person of many talents. Her boys believed that she could do anything. She loved cooking, canning, growing in the garden and making the family’s clothing. She was an employee at Saco Lowell for 30-plus years. She earned an associate degree in culinary arts at the age of 70. Upon retiring, she enjoyed doing prison and nursing home ministries. She was a volunteer at the Tri-City Baptist Church food pantry. Her boys will be missing Mama’s cherry yum-yum.

Survivors include her two sons, Rev. David Brian Aiken (Nancy) from Easley and Robert Earl (Bobby) Aiken (Melissa) from Easley. She is also survived by grandchildren, Faith Clayton, David Aiken, Hope Alexander, Daniel Aiken, Justin Aiken, Travis Aiken and Amber Newman. Mrs. Aiken leaves behind nine precious and loving great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Aiken was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Smith.

A chapel service was held at Dillard Funeral Home on Aug. 8. Burial was held privately at the family home cemetery. Brian Aiken officiated the service.

JOHN WILTON LEE

PICKENS — John Wilton Lee, 80, husband of 57 years to Sadie Nealy Lee, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.

Wilton was a member of Pickens First Baptist Church and a volunteer firefighter for the Pickens Fire Department. Wilton was employed by the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, and retired from the Pickens County Solicitor’s Office.

Mr. Lee was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Wilton is survived by his wife, Sadie; a son, Marc (Stacy) Lee of Pickens; a daughter, Michelle (Ted) Watson of Pickens; grandchildren, Rebecca (Trevor) Hayes, Jordan (Amber Wilson) Lee, Hanna Watson and Katie Lee; a brother-in-law, Oliver (Dianne) Nealy; six nieces; and three nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Stanyarne Lee and Louise Lee; a brother, Stan Lee; and a sister, Mary Helen Brown.

A funeral service was held on Aug. 6 at Pickens First Baptist Church, with burial following at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

TRACY ANN CRAWFORD

PICKENS — Tracy Ann Crawford, 85, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020.

Born in Pickens, she was the daughter of the late Monty and Minnie Nix Skelton and wife of the late Gerald Crawford. She was a member of First Baptist Church Pickens, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Hiott-Lanham Sunday School Class. She loved purchasing items throughout the year for the Samaritan Purse Operation Christmas Child. Mrs. Crawford enjoyed spending her evenings drinking coffee with her friends.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Steven Freeman and wife Abbie of Easley; grandchildren, Sarah S. Freeman of Easley and Andrew Grant of Clinton; great-grandson, Blaze Bauer; niece, Barbara Wood Allen of Boiling Springs; and great-niece, Dori Wood of Boiling Springs.

Mrs. Crawford was predeceased by her husband, parents, daughter, Jo Ann Grant, and sister, Gellette Dickerson.

A private graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

DON NIX

LIBERTY — Donald Ralph Nix, 78, died on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020, at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pickens, he was a son of the late Henry Ralph and Beulah Pressley Nix.

Mr. Nix retired from Duke Energy and was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam. During his free time, he loved gardening. He was a member of Arial Baptist Church and was a 40-year life member of Liberty Masonic Lodge #235 AFM.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Carolyn Nix of the home; two daughters, Samantha Nix of Liberty and Zina Lee (Patrick) of Liberty; and two grandchildren, Scout Revis and Holly Lee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Nix.

Memorial services to honor Don’s life were held on Aug. 8 at Arial Baptist Church.

EASLEY — Diane Brown, 68, wife of the late Thomas Brown, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 14, 2020.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Morris and the late Elizabeth Nabors Morris.

Survivors include her brother, Troy (Ruth) Morris; sisters, Bobbie McKinney and Tootsie (Brandon) Hayes; sister-in-law, Audrey Morris; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Curtis Morris, Ed Morris and Folger Morris; and sisters, Viola Wright, Ruby Evett and Helen Pace.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a drive by memorial at Oolenoy Baptist Church on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 2-4 p.m.
