Irene Holton

Easley — Irene Elizabeth Simmons Porter Holton died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at the age of 84.

A loving mother and grandmother, she was a blessing to all who knew her. Born in Greenville County on Oct. 22, 1928, a daughter of the late Isham Elijah and Iola Epps Simmons, she also enjoyed living in Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia as well as South Carolina. Irene was a gifted artist, open to adventure, and faced each chapter of her life with a cheerful and optimistic spirit. She valiantly dealt with adversity such as arthritis, loss of vision, loss of loved ones, and over eight years on dialysis, without losing faith, hope or her ability to remain joyful and encouraging. A member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church in Easley, Irene was previously a member of the Church of God in Alma, Ga. and the Church of God in Winter Garden, Fla.

Irene is survived by her son Allan (Cynthia) Porter of Easley, daughter Gina (James) Kern of Henrietta, N.Y., daughter-in-law Inez Hoffman Porter; grandchildren Richard Yates, Candice Yates, Robin (Rob) Porter Stutz, James Kern, Thomas Kern, Anthony (Ashley) Howell, and Matthew Howell, great grandchildren Shawn Yates, Austin Yates, Regan Gregory, and Ashton Stutz, great great grandson Bryson Yates, brother Jerry (Jane) Simmons of Simpsonville, sister Merle Mason of Pickens, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Bill (William) Holton, ex-husband Wayne Porter, son Richard Porter and sisters Pearl Lewis and Jean Breazeale.
Services were 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug 15 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home with her nephew Rex Simmons officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Jack Bryant

 Norris — Jack Anderson Bryant, 78, of 400 N. Norris Drive died Monday at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Pickens.

Born in Cateechee, he was the husband of Inez Ross Bryant of the home and a son of the late Clyde and Blanch Bryson Bryant. Mr. Bryant served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Navy. He was retired from Mohawk Industries and was a fireman at Norris Fire Department for over 50 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Velma “V.V.” Massey(Andrew) of Williamston; a son, Chip Bryant(Cindy) of Laurens; a sister, Thelma Jeffrey of Virginia; a granddaughter, Kayla Massey; and four step grandchildren, Lynsey, Jennifer and Preston Dunning and Jessica Langley.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a son, Michael Bryant; and a brother, Austin “Bud” Bryant.

Graveside services for Mr. Bryant were held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Westview Cemetery in Liberty. Dr. Royce Addis officiated.

Evelyn Woodall

Six Mile — Evelyn Swafford Woodall, 75, widow of Paul Woodall, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 13, 2013.

Mrs. Woodall was born in Oconee County, a daughter of the late Lonnie and Pearl Blackwell Swafford. She was retired from Mayfair Mills, Pickens Division after over 32 years service.

Survivors include her daughter, Dottie Wilson of Six Mile, her sons, Paul Woodall (Mary) of Six Mile, Dennis Woodall (Rachel) of Liberty, Allen Woodall (Felicia) of Norris, and Russell Woodall (Sarah) of Six Mile, 14 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Also surviving are sisters, Inez Smith of Westminster and Lucille McJunkins of Walhalla and brother, Ivan Swafford of Pickens.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Woodall was preceded in death by a son, Charles Woodall, granddaughter, Sheena Woodall, and brother, Earbie Swafford.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Dorothy Ellenburg Braswell

Easley — Dorothy Louise Cooper Ellenburg Braswell, 88, widow of Junior Paul Ellenburg, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 13, 2013.

Mrs. Braswell was born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late William Oscar and Ellen Reid Cooper. She was retired as a seamstress.

Survivors include daughters, Joan Hamilton of Pickens, and Joyce Raines (Eddie) of Easley, and a sister, Eloise Renfro (Howard) of Easley, 10 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Braswell was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Willis and a brother J. C. Cooper.

A graveside service was held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Stewart Perry

 Liberty — Thomas Stewart Perry, 91, of 7913 Liberty Hwy. died Friday at his residence.

Born in Seneca, he was the husband of Sarah Whitlock Perry of the home and a son of the late Thomas Marvin and Annie Mae Stewart Perry. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was retired from Equinox Mill before going to work at Bi-Lo in Anderson. In his early years he helped build Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was known for witnessing about his Lord to everyone and was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Angela Vaughn of Greenwood; two sons, Michael Perry (Sandra) and Tim Perry, both of Liberty; a sister, Polly Owen of Liberty; a brother, Truett Perry of Liberty; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sons, Ronald and Aaron Perry; and a sister, Myra Dorrity.

Funeral services for Mr. Perry were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Flat Rock Baptist Church. Burial will be at Calvary Baptist Church.

Roy C. McCall, Jr.

Easley — Roy C. McCall, Jr., 90, of South Pendleton Street, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 at McCall Hospice House.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Roy C. McCall, Sr., and the late Belle Roper McCall, Mr. McCall was a graduate of Easley High School, Class of 1939 and a graduate of Furman University and also attended Harvard Business School. He was a land developer, among other things, and a veteran of World War II having served in the US Navy in the Pacific. Mr. McCall was a member of First Baptist Church, Easley, where he was a former deacon and was a Trustee of Anderson University where he was formerly interim President. He was a former member of the Easley Rotary Club and the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Gwen Smith McCall; three sons, Roy C. McCall, III, and wife, Carolyn, of Easley, Marty McCall and wife, Vickie, of Herndon, Va., and David McCall and wife, Barbara, of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Joann M. Cobb of Easley; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. McCall was predeceased by a brother, Gilbert McCall.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at First Baptist Church, Easley with the Rev. Dr. John Adams officiating, along with Roy McCall, III, Marty McCall and David McCall. Burial will be at a later date in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be Saturday in the narthex of the church immediately following the service.

Carl A. Bearden

Easley — Carl Adams Bearden, 91, husband of the late Shirley Marie Barrett Bearden, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Mr. Bearden was born in Oconee County a son of the late Joseph Freeman and Carrie Etta Baygents Bearden. Mr. and Mrs. Bearden were married July 13, 1946. Following high school he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone when Pearl Harbor was attacked. In 1959 he went to work for the Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago and in 1967 returned to South Carolina where he worked for the Donaldson Center in Greenville and later for Platt Saco Lowell in Easley. He and his wife were members and contributors of the Log Cabin Country Store on Park Street in Greenville and the South Carolina Artisans Center in Walterboro.

Survivors include his daughter, Carla B. Rood of Easley and his granddaughter, Vanessa Rood Weatherly and her husband Robert Foster Weatherly of Atlanta, Ga.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Bearden was preceded in death by a brother Milton Edward Bearden.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Louise D. Brown

Central — Louise Dillard Brown, 89, of Central, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, N.C.

Mrs. Brown was born in Easley, daughter of the late Joe and Mera Cantrell Dillard. She was a homemaker and a member of Park Street Baptist Church in Easley.

Survivors include her sons, Michael S. Brown (Jerri J. Griffin) of Travelers Rest, and Wayman F. Brown, Jr. and Roger A. Brown (Theresa) all of Central, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Riddle.

A private graveside service will be held.
