JACKSON WARNER DUNCAN SR.

PICKENS — Jackson Warner “Jack” Duncan Sr., 85, passed away Aug. 27, 2024, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Mr. Duncan was born in   Sept. 24, 1938, to the late Furman and Winnie Duncan. He was retired as owner and operator of Duncan Grading. Mr. Duncan was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a lifelong resident of Pickens. Mr. Duncan loved to be outdoors, hunting, racing, football and working.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Mary Anna Duncan; three sons and their wives, Jack Duncan Jr. (Rachel), Freddie Duncan (Wanda) and Eddie Duncan (Teresa), all of Pickens; nine grandchildren, Jessica Worthington (Harris), Shane Duncan (Becca), Kayce Owen (Matthan), Richard Duncan, Brandon Duncan (Charlesie) and Bryson Duncan (Ashley), all of Pickens, Rebekah Rice (Logan), Andrew Simmons (Erin) and Paige Ellison (Rylee); 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Shelby Crowe.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Duncan was preceded in death by his six siblings, Robert, Jerry, Billy and Mickey Duncan, Loretta Ellenburg and Kathy Lackey Putnam; and an infant granddaughter, Anna Duncan.

GALE ELIZABETH HARBIN

EASLEY — Gale Elizabeth Harbin (Beth), 74, of Easley, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Geraldine Royster.

Beth was born July 9, 1950 in Anderson and grew up in Pendleton. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and wife who will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, sharing stories, playing games and watching their favorite TV shows. She was always there to support and offer encouragement. In her free time, Beth enjoyed collecting antiques and searching thrift stores and was always eager to share her finds with others.

Surviving are her loving husband of 55 years, Wilton Harbin; children, Mike Harbin and his wife, Jill, of Easley and Jason Harbin and his wife, Ashley, of Pickens; grandchildren, Abby Harbin, Eli Harbin, Will Harbin and Jacob Harbin; and a sister, Lynne Brunelle (Royster). Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital located in Greenville. A private service will be held for family.

 

CHRIS PORTER

PICKENS — Chris Day Porter, the cherished wife of Gary P. Porter, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024, at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Easley, she was a daughter of the late Ben Frank and Clara Lois McGuire Day.

She worked hard at varying positions throughout her life, all while also being a dedicated homemaker who found joy in spending time with her grandchildren and relished family trips to the beach. She was the perfect mix of fun, tough and a little bit of crazy all in one! The love and strength shown by her remains as impressionable influence that echoes through the lives of anyone touched by her presence.

In addition to her husband, she was the beloved mother of Amanda Gessell (Ben) and sister to Sherry Curtis and Susan Cuddy. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Kaden, Maya and Cullen.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two siblings, Michael Ben Day and Kathy Lynn Day.

A celebration of Chris’s life took place Aug. 31 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Following the service, family and friends were invited to attend a celebration of her life at Steven Cuddy’s home.

Throughout her life, Chris touched the hearts of many with her kindness and devotion to her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. It is with great sadness that we announce her passing and the ceremonies in honor of her memory.

SELDON GREENE

EASLEY — J. Seldon Greene, 95, of Easley, departed this life on Aug. 26, 2024, surrounded by the love of his children.

Seldon was born at home in the beautiful Smokey Mountains of East Tennessee in Del Rio on June 30, 1929. He was the son of the late Swan and Carrie Hall Greene.

He married Mildred in 1962 and was her constant companion until her death. She was the love of his life, and he was devoted to her memory until his very last days.

He graduated as the valedictorian of Cosby High School and later earned his Bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University.

Throughout his career, he worked as a public school teacher and accountant for Daniel Construction. In 1966, he joined Greenville Hospital System and retired after approximately 31 years of service in finance and risk management. He was a Christian and member of Edgewood Church of Christ in Greenville, and he read his Bible daily.

He loved gardening, growing azaleas, having a nice roaring fire in his brick fireplace during the winter months and watching Clemson football and ACC basketball games. Still, most of all, he loved all his Buicks, especially his 1963 red and white Buick Wildcat.

Seldon is survived by his son, Kevin Greene (Prudence) of Mauldin; his daughter, Kristie Hodge (Mitch) of Nashville, Tenn.; and his three grandchildren, Riley, Bree and Isabelle.

In addition to his loving wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Hubert, Nelson, Scott and Jerry Greene, as well as his sisters, Ruth Boothe and Amber Holley.

Funeral services were held Sept. 1 at Edgewood Church of Christ in Greenville. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Martha, who has been Dad’s live-in caregiver for the past several years. We would also like to thank Charlene and Deanna for their assistance in his care and his nephews and nieces, who have cared for and visited him over the years. Additionally, we want to acknowledge the exceptional care provided by the entire Hospice of the Upstate staff during the final months of his life.

TAMMY S. GREGG

EASLEY — Mrs. Tammy Skelton Gregg, 47, wife of Wallace Lee Gregg, went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024.

Born in Greenville County, a daughter of James Walter Skelton Jr. and Bobbie Mitchell Skelton of Simpsonville, Mrs. Gregg was a graduate of Mauldin High School and later received her Bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting from the University of South Carolina. She was a Realtor with Cindy Fox Miller and Associates and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Tammy belonged to the community service organization, Espsilon Sigma Alpha, served as president of the Dacusville Elementary School PTO and served on the board of the Dacusville Recreation Department.

She also served with the March of Dimes and Easterseals.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 16 years and her parents, are her two sons, Wallace Porter Gregg II and Bates Mitchell Gregg, both of the home; her grandmother, Peggy Campbell Skelton of Simpsonville; her brother, James Walter Skelton III of Simpsonville; her sister, Amanda Skelton Cartagine (Keith) of Simpsonville; a nephew, Corbin Angelo Cartagine of Simpsonville; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wallace Porter Gregg and Ellen Jeanette Gregg of Easley; sister-in-law, Darlene Moore Turner of Greenville; and a brother-in-law, Darrell Bramlett Moore of Batesburg.

Funeral services were held Sept. 1 at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Burial followed at the Cross Roads Baptist Church cemetery.

KENNETH J. ‘KEN’ SUDDETH

EASLEY — Kenneth J. “Ken” Suddeth, 84, loving husband of 64 years to Virginia K. Suddeth, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024, at his home surrounded by family.

Born Aug. 27, 1940, in Easley, Ken was the son of the late Earl Suddeth and Jessie Stokes Suddeth. Mr. Suddeth was a member of Arial United Methodist Church in Easley. Ken loved most sports, especially Atlanta Braves baseball. He continued to be an avid golfer for most of his life. Ken and his brothers owned Suddeth Bait Company, where they produced handmade fishing lures from start to finish until his retirement. He was a wonderfully kind and generous man who loved being around people. His greatest loves were his family, playing sports since his childhood and black cherry ice cream.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia K. Suddeth of the home; three daughters, Karen Thacker (Terry) of Liberty, Dana Shock (Sam) of Pickens and Shea Kennedy (Sid) of Pendleton; grandchildren, Corey Thacker, Haley Bennefield and Courtney Creel; numerous great-grandchildren; brothers, Randall Suddeth (Faye) of Liberty and Donnie Suddeth (Pam) of Pickens; and numerous precious and loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Suddeth was predeceased by a baby sister, Judy Suddeth, and a brother, Melvin Suddeth.

Funeral services will be held  at 11 a.m. Sept. 5 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens, with burial to follow the service at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley.

THOMAS ‘PHIL’ KNIGHT

EASLEY — Thomas “Phil” Knight, 92, beloved husband of 48 years to Jean A. Knight, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024, at his home surrounded by family.

Born Aug. 24, 1932, in Greenville County, Phil was the son of the late Thomas Grayson Knight and Virginia Nell Cantrell Knight. Mr. Knight was of the Baptist faith. He was a United States Army veteran, where he served as a drill sergeant at Fort Jackson. He worked for Southern Bell for many years. He held many different job titles during his long career. His extensive telecom knowledge led several independent telephone companies to employ him through most of his life. After retirement, he enjoyed being outside attending to his garden and being in nature. He was a man of many talents. He was always doing something until the last couple of years of his life. He was a good father and loved his family dearly.

Survivors include his wife, Jean A Knight; their daughter and caregiver, Holly V. Knight of the home; children, Kris Clarke of Columbia, Lori Waldrop (Chuck), Leslie Brooks and Craig Knight (Tia), all of Easley; grandchildren, Charlie, Lauren, Matthew, Landan, Elijah, Hunter, Taylor, Kelli and Rachel; seven loving and precious great-grandchildren; and sisters, Linda K. Johnson (Mac) of Greenville and Jane K. Galloway of Georgia.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Knight was predeceased by a daughter, Kelly Knight, and a brother, Ronnie Knight.

Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Sept. 4 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens, with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m.

MICHAEL ALLEN ‘MIKE’ POMEROY SR.

LIBERTY — With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Michael Allen Pomeroy Sr. on Aug. 27, 2024.

Born in Austin, Minn., he was the beloved husband to Barbara Rigdon Pomeroy for 55 years and a son of the late Ruth Noah Warwick and Ralph Francis Pomeroy.

Mike, a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, served his country with bravery during the Vietnam War era.

Retiring as a superintendent in the construction industry, Mike was known for his strong leadership and dedication to his work.

Devoted to the outdoors, Mike found solace in hunting, fishing, and gold dredging, building a remarkable collection of knives and Native American artifacts along the way. However, his greatest joy came from spending quality time with his family. A man of faith, Mike was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church, where he found comfort and community. His passion for the outdoors and dedication to his family will forever be remembered by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sande Pomeroy of Liberty; a son, Michael Allen Pomeroy Jr. (Tammy) of Simpsonville; five grandchildren, Austin Crump (C.C.), Jake Pomeroy (Allyson), Ashtyn Smith (Walker), Ryan Crump (Meagan) and Kirstyn Pomeroy; six great-grandchildren; and numerous sisters.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by several brothers.

JUANITA S. JACKSON

LIBERTY — Juanita S. Jackson, 87, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024, at her home.

Born April 7, 1937, in Canadian County, Okla., Juanita was the daughter of Henry Stanton and Mary Ward Stanton. Juanita was of the Baptist faith. She was an Atlanta Braves fan. She was family focused and her family made her the happiest.

Survivors include her three sons, Curtis W. Jackson (Angie) of Gaffney, Theron W. Jackson (Dolly) of Central and Christopher W. Jackson of Liberty; grandchildren, Nicholas, Wayne, Stephanie and Trisha; numerous loving and precious great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jackson was predeceased by her husband, Paul R. Jackson and her siblings, Blanche, Ludith, Ruth, Edward, Elmer and Henry.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

NELLIE JO BREWER ‘JO’

EASLEY — Nellie Jo Brewer “Jo”, 84, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born July 29, 1940, in Pickens County, Jo was the daughter of the late Waddy D. Breazeale and Esther Steele Breazeale. Mrs. Brewer was of the Baptist faith. She was a business college graduate. She loved watching Channel 4 and was a loyal Clemson Tiger football fan. She was an excellent cook, and everyone loved her meatloaf, mashed potatoes, lima beans, Mississippi Mud Cake, and especially her fudge.

Survivors include three children, Cindy Brewer, Sherri Brewer and Larry Brewer, all of Easley; grandchildren, Jeffrey Brewer (Ashley) of Easley, Jacob Brewer of Travelers Rest and Jaden Brewer of Williamston; siblings, David Brezeale (Rachel) of Simpsonville, Tom Ed Breazeale (Conice) of Six Mile, Lynn Breazeale (Terri) of Pickens and Kathy McDonald (Sam) of Pickens; and a special niece, Lori Alexander among many precious nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brewer was predeceased by her husband, L. Mendel Brewer.

Visitation will be held on Sept. 6, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens with funeral services to follow at 12 p.m. Burial will follow the service in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

ROBERT BRYANT

LIBERTY — We are saddened to announce the passing of Robert Ernest Bryant on August 27, 2024. Born in Germany on Nov. 3, 1955, he was a son of the late William Virgil Bryant and Betty Harrison Gantt.

He was a beloved husband to Shelia Bryant; his children, Amie Bryant, Krissie Bryant and Andy Bryant; his siblings, NaDene Sullivan and Phillip Bryant; also surviving are six grandchildren, Kane Bryant, Karlie Matthews, Kassadie Matthews, Amaniy Young, Mason Bryant and Gracie Ganner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Culbreath.

He was a US Army veteran and dedicated his career to the energy industry as a project manager at Duke Energy. His hard work and dedication have left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Services to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
