GRADY CARTEE

LIBERTY — Grady Franklin Cartee, 93, of 527 Campground Road, widower of Mildred Waldrop Cartee, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018, at his home

Born in Liberty, he was a son of the late Ralph and Nicie Gantt Cartee. He graduated from Liberty High School and later Tri-County Technical College.

Mr. Cartee was retired from Alice Manufacturing with 42 years of service. Following retirement, he loved traveling, gardening and most of all loved to spend time with his grandchildren. He was a faithful member of Rice’s Creek Baptist Church, where served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Cartee of Liberty, and Annie Nell “Anne” Medlin (Joe) of Southport, N.C.; a son, Kimper Cartee (Reba) of Clemson; a brother, Jim Cartee of Easley; six grandchildren, Shandi Sellers, Joseph Medlin, Jeremy Price, Jennifer Earwaker, Todd Cartee and Rebecca C. Stewart; and 10 great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Smith and Nell Jean Burns, and three brothers, Roy, Billy and Lloyd Cartee.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Cartee were conducted on September 5 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial followed at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Rice’s Creek Baptist Church, Building Fund, PO Box 597, Liberty SC 29657.

PHILLIP M SMITH

SIX MILE — Phillip M. Smith, 55, husband of Margaret Shelton, passed from this life on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018.

Mr. Smith was born in Seneca, a son of the late Kenneth Leland Smith Sr. and Lela Beth Young Smith. He was retired after 19 years as an automotive instructor.

He taught at the Pickens County Career and Technology Center, where he made life-long relationships with many colleagues, students and parents. Phillip also enjoyed being the wrestling coach at Daniel High School for several years, and later officiated across the upstate. On March 14, 1988, and July 16, 1991, respectively, he welcomed his beloved children, who were the most important part of his life.

Phillip is survived by his wife, Margaret; his children, Phillip Michael (Carah) and Taylor Michelle (Zach); his granddaughter, Harvest Marie; his sister, Cindy Chapman (John); and his brothers, Kenneth L. Smith Jr (Vicki), Jeffery A. Smith (Lynn) and Russell A. Smith (Teresa).

A gathering in his memory was held at his home in Six Mile on September 1. If unable to attend, Phillip’s Facebook will remain open and all are welcome to post memories and final words to him there.

FAYE SMITH

PENDLETON — Faye Chapman Smith, 83, of 203 Thomas Street, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018 at Lila Doyle Nursing Center. Born in Liberty, she was the widow of JD Smith Jr. and a daughter of the late Ben and Ressie McWhorter Chapman.

Surviving are two daughters, Connie Johnson and Jennifer Smith both of Pendleton; a brother, Ray Chapman; three grandchildren, Terri Gryszel, Joel Robbins, III and Cherish Bordelon; four great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Robbins; three sisters, Nara Cooper, Lois Holden and Lucille Alexander; two brothers, Lawrence and Henry Chapman; and a grandson, Josh Whitfield.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Smith were conducted on September 4 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Private burial occured at Westview Cemetery.

“SHOE STRING” HENDRICKS

EASLEY — Mr. Gerald Alvin “Shoe String” Hendricks, 69, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018, at his home.

Born in Greenville County, a son of the late Henry Theodore “H.T.” Hendricks and the late Nora Virginia Ray Hendricks, Mr. Hendricks was self employed and a member of Blue Ridge View Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother, Robert Earl Hendricks (Louise) of Liberty; and a sister, Wanda Deloris H. Caughman of Liberty. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hendricks was predeceased by a brother, Perry Calvin Hendricks; and a sister, Martha Gail Cash.

The family will host a memorial service at 7 p.m. on September 6, at Blue Ridge View Baptist Church, 745 Wolf Creek Road, Pickens, SC 29671.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the church, prior to the service.

EASLEY — Mr. James Ernest Gillespie, 78, husband of the late Bobbie Leila Batson Gillespie, passed away Friday, Aug. 31, 2018.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Buford Lee Gillespie and the late Laura Ann Medlin Gillespie, Mr. Gillespie was retired from J. Grady Randolph Trucking with more than 25 years of service.

Surviving are two sons, Larry Gillespie and Lee Gillespie, both of Easley; a brother, Wallace Gillespie of Easley; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Gillespie was predeceased by two daughters, Joyce Ross and Doris Robinson; a brother, William Gillespie; a grandson, Stanley Robinson; and a great-grandson, Travis Pierce Craft Jr.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 4 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

DR. WILLIAM E. DUKES

CLEMSON — Dr. William Eugene Dukes, 88, husband of Sylvia Campbell Dukes, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018, at his residence.

Born in Honea Path, Dr. Bill was a son of the late William Clarence and Sudie Lusk Dukes. He was a 1957 graduate of Clemson University and graduated from MUSC in 1961. After serving his internship at MUSC, he moved to Clemson and practiced medicine in the greater Clemson community until his retirement in 2013. Dr. Dukes was totally committed to the community, serving in many organizations, helped found a new community bank and spent many years involved in the Boy Scout program. He received many civic awards and recognitions from Clemson University, including its Distinguished Service Award (1983), was an honorary member of the Blue Key Society, Tiger Brotherhood and Board of Visitors. He and Sylvia are endowment members of IPTAY. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Clemson and was a retired captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons, Dr. William Eugene Dukes Jr. (Janice) of Seneca and Kenneth Dwight Dukes of Clemson; brothers, Joe Robert Dukes of Anderson and James C. Dukes of the Atlanta Area; grandchildren, William Eugene “Kip” Dukes, III (Lien), Nicola Ann Mueller (Brian), Tanner Conrad Dukes, Matthew Brock (Sommer) and Shannon Black (Tony); and great grandchildren, Eric Mueller, Olivia Mueller, James Dukes and Kiera Dukes.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Bill was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Leslie Maria Dukes, and brother, William Clarence Dukes Jr.

Funeral services were held on Aug. 31 in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home with burial following in Old Stone Church cemetery.

JOHNNY WHITMIRE

LIBERTY — Johnny James Whitmire, 79, of 6 Jackson St., passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 3, 2018, at his home.

Born in Liberty, he was a son of the late Clyde and Essie Porter Whitmire.

He was retired from Greenwood Mills with 44 years of service and is a longtime member of Roanoke Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Betty Crowe Whitmire of the home; a son, Keith Whitmire (Karen) of McCormick; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Whitmire of Easley; five sisters, Gladye Mae, Yvonne, Sue, Diane and Kathy; three brothers, Claude, Bobby and Haskell; five grandchildren, Brooke Whitmire (her fiancé, Steven Cummings), Madeline and Heidi Whitmire, Kasey McTier and Katelyn Thompson.

In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by a son, James Michael Whitmire; two sisters, Lucille and Sylvia; and two brothers, Roy and Donald.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Whitmire were conducted on Tuesday at Roanoke Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

JANE J. O’BRIEN

PICKENS — Jane J. O’Brien, 57, of Pickens went to be with her Lord on Saturday Sept. 1, 2018, in Greenville.

Born in Greenville, she is the daughter of Bennie and Shelby Crowe.

Ms. O’Brien was very loved by her family and friends. Her profession was as a buyer and planner in the automotive industry.

Survivors include her parents; daughter, Jaclyn Payne (Ryan) of Easley; fiancé, Charlie Cordell of Pickens; and brother, Tony Crowe (Jo Ann) of Pickens. She also leaves to share in her memory Moe, her beloved fur baby.

A visitation will be held on Sept. 5 from 1-2 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home. Services will follow in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

JAMES LOWELL ELKINS

EASLEY — James Lowell Elkins, 82, of Easley, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018.

Born in Bergoo, W. Va., he is the son of the late Buster and Irene Elkins and the husband of Martha Elkins.

Mr. Elkins was employed by Ryobi as an engineer, plant manager Ryobi, Reynosa, Mexico, and served as a ruling elder at Liberty Presbyterian Church in Liberty. He was very loved by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Martha of 44 and a half years; a daughter, Tina Elizabeth Elkins; one nephew, Jackie Lee Turner; two nieces, Kathy Neaves and Sherri Neaves Goodin; and Carol Davis, a very dear friend. Mr. Elkins also leaves eight sisters and one brother to share in his memory. In addition to his parents, Mr. Elkins was predeceased by two sisters.

Services were held on Sept. 2 in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel, with entombment following at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
