iHOPE looking for volunteers for day of service on Saturday

PICKENS — Volunteers from the Pickens area will come together for a Day of Service on Saturday. The group is calling the event “I Help Out Pickens Everyday” (iHOPE).

What is a day of service? The iHOPE day of service was created by a group of committed community volunteers who love Pickens and feel a responsibility to give back. The event is the brainchild of the Rev. Beverly Kelly of Pickens Presbyterian Church to promote the spirit and value of volunteerism, increase awareness of local needs and demonstrate what people working together for the community’s good can accomplish. Working with the City of Pickens, United Way of Pickens County, and a planning committee of 10 volunteers, several projects have been identified. Members of the committee are the Rev. Nath Briley, Katherine Hendricks, Julie Capaldi, Jo Anne Gessell, Wendy Giblin, Robin Giddings, Kathryn Gravely, Sue Grill, Louise Hope, and Natalie Putman.

“This community belongs to each one of us to care for, to enjoy, and to make sure it is here for future generations,” Kelly said. “There are many different reasons to volunteer your time. Many people want to make a difference; others want to have some fun; some want to learn a new skill; while others want to share their skills.

“There is no right or wrong reason for volunteering. It is important that with all the needs in our community and all the folks who are willing to give their time and talents that we come together in a Day of Service. Working with the Pickens County agencies and churches in our area, the goal is to match many needs with many volunteers. We hope you will join us Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon, to discover how I (We) Help Out Pickens Everyday.”
