Inmates captured following escape

PICKENS — Two inmates who escaped from the Pickens County Detention Center last week are back in custody.

According to a release from the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, Jonathan Dean Moody and Rickylee Smith slipped out a door that had been compromised at the LEC around 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 20.

Moody was apprehended around noon the following day in a wooded area just north of Highway 178, less than a mile from the detention center.

Smith managed to evade officers for nearly five days.

Officers said Smith called from a home on S.C. 183 near Six Mile saying he wanted to turn himself in around midday on Sunday. Smith said he was tired, hungry and wanted to stop running. Officers responded, taking Smith back into custody west of Six Mile near the Pickens County/Oconee County line.

Both Smith and Moody now face additional charges. The PCSO was assisted in the manhunt by officers from Pickens City, Liberty City, the U.S. Marshall’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
