Liberty High School wrestler fares well at national event
YORK, Pa. — Rising Liberty High School junior Dylan Riddle won half of the matches he wrestled and collected three forfeits at the team dual meet cadet nationals sponsored by USA Wrestling.
Riddle, a member of Berkshire-Pickens Wrestling Club, handled being the “swing” man for the team, splitting his time between the 145-pound and 152-pound weight classes. Riddle got the first takedown in all 10 of his matches.
“Dylan needs to work on his cardio in order to maintain a high level of energy for six minutes, rather than for just 60 seconds,” South Carolina coaches said.
What also impressed the South Carolina coaches was that Riddle scored the only team points against eventual Greco champion Illinois and on the final day scored a technical fall in freestyle to help South Carolina pull away from Delaware, 40-26. Delaware is coached by former Clemson University All-American Kurt Howell.
In the Greco competition, South Carolina fell to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Georgia and California. South Carolina upset Michigan, 37-29, for its second victory in the Greco competition.
In freestyle, South Carolina lost five matches on Friday against Washington, Iowa, California, Georgia and Pennsylvania. It wrapped up the competition on Saturday by beating Delaware and slipping by Michigan, 37-32. The South Carolina team of 15 was made up of 13 wrestlers from Pickens and Oconee counties.
BPWC practices will continue through June and July, with the emphasis being on folkstyle wrestling.
