Meals on Wheels recruiting for more summer volunteers

COUNTY — Pickens County Meals on Wheels seeks caring individuals to help deliver meals this summer. Are you looking for a meaningful volunteer activity, or a way to spend quality time with your kids or grandkids over summer vacation? Volunteering with Meals on Wheels is a perfect opportunity for those who enjoy making a difference in people’s lives.
Meal delivery is a perfect fit for families, church groups and individuals. Volunteering as a family is an excellent way to demonstrate the values of kindness, compassion and civic responsibility. Feel good about making a difference in your community in just one hour during lunchtime; Monday through Friday, once a week, once a month or a schedule that works for you.
Meals on Wheels has 23 volunteers on the road each week day delivering routes across Pickens County. Summer is a busy time of year as daily schedules change, and many regular volunteers also need a “day of vacation” to enjoy time with their family and friends. Consequently, this creates a great need for additional volunteers to help deliver meals during these summer months. Volunteering during the summer and holiday seasons, allows regular volunteers to take this “day of vacation” knowing their route will be covered.
Volunteers are the backbone of the organization. They play a vital role in the welfare of home-bound disabled and elderly persons in Pickens County all year, but it is especially critical during the summer months as the heat intensifies. They not only deliver a nutritious meal, but provide a well-check and warm conversation that can be the most important part of that person’s day.
“Meals on Wheels recipients thoroughly enjoy visits from volunteers of all ages, especially children,” said Meta Bowers, Executive Director. “It is very heart-warming to see how excited people become whenever my children deliver with me. I love to hear the stories they share with this younger generation.”
Senior hunger is an issue that Pickens County Meals on Wheels addresses on a daily basis by providing, home-delivered meals to the homebound elderly and disabled citizens of Pickens County. Meals on Wheels is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that is supported by individuals, churches, church groups, schools, businesses, the United Way, civic and service organizations who generously donate their time, talents and treasures to alleviate this growing need.
